  1. If I was SCSU, I'd be more hyped about Ben Hanowski of Little Falls. I know he hasnt played the toughest schedule, but hes 13 points(with 4 regular season games left), from breaking Johnny Pohls all-time record in points and he passed Dave Spehar's record of 171 goals in his career.

    2005- 35 goals/29 assistsvv- 64 pts

    2006 - 40 goals/71 assists - 111 pts

    2007 - 48 goals/47 assists - 95 pts

    2008 - 50 goals/46 assists - 96 pts

I didn't know SCSU fans could get any more hyped over Hanowski!!

As for Benik, I'm hopeful, but he's a gamble... period.

  2. Pretty sure it's his brother.

I think you're probably right. Greg and Jim were brothers, both born in Chatham. Ryan was born to Greg in Pittsburgh, Brad was born to Jim in nearby Miramachi, where Brett was born and is currently playing. I think the Scouting News screwed up. They meant to write Jim/Brad, but instead wrote Jim/Ryan. Either way, I'll still list the cousin of a former Husky as a prospect, even if his brother is a Sioux!

  3. I do too but it gives us time to speculate. One thing I've noticed is Brad's little brother is doing pretty well against older competition: http://nbpeimmhl.stats.pointstreak.com/pla...p;seasonid=3040

And the scouting news now thinks he may be a first round QMJHL pick: http://www.thescoutingnews.com/index.php?o...1&Itemid=51

Hopefully Brad has a big influence on him.

Is that Brad's little brother or Ryan's little brother? Scouting News seems to indicate it's Ryan's brother/Jim's grandson. Either way, thanks for identifying a potential future Husky for me!

  4. That's him, when EGF played against Central he had a shot on central goalie Seth Lang that was amazing.

Too bad EGF won't make it to state. Warroad, Thief River Falls, and Bemidji will make sure of that. He could probably play USHL next season. In fact, as a '91, he can probably pick a team (like Fargo) to tryout for. If Blais doesn't take him, I'm SURE that Alexandria of the NAHL would.

  5. I know this is going to get shelled as just wanting local boys on UND's team, but has anyone heard of any interest in Jake LaDouceur or any other ND players over the next 2-3 years? LaDouceur is having a great year and is still a Jr., so in 2-3 years he, if he still progresses, he would be a nice pick up.

It's not North Dakota, but Jake Useldinger is having a good season for East Grand Forks. He is also a junior.

  6. What about Oshie? 45pts his freshman season was hardly struggling. :D

Unless you count the 11 games he played in the USHL after his HS season ended as not being straight from HS. :D

Strike that. As I've written before and I should have written in this case... SFHS players don't lead the WCHA in freshman scoring. Murray did it in 2004. Stastny did it in 2005. Kessel did it in 2006 (though Oshie did quite well). Nodl did it in 2007 (though Barribal did quite well). Roe did it in 2008. Let's assume that Schroeder will do it this season. Basically, I just don't think the bar should be set so high for SFHS players... sometimes the fans expect too much.

Also, don't write off those few games in the USHL so quickly. That kind of "taste" can be very helpful.

  7. If Mattson does come in, he WILL struggle. Straight from high school players struggle their freshman seasons in the WCHA... period. Still though, he can contribute somewhat, and it lets other high end prospects know that they won't be forced to play a year of juniors with the Sioux... that's an important recruiting tool.

Here's who I show as SFHS (straight from high school) next season...

    Mattson - Sioux (maybe)

    Hanowski - SCSU

    Oliver - SCSU (maybe)

    DeLisle - Duloot

    Tardy - Duloot

    Pitlick - Mankato

    Budish - goofers (maybe)

    Leddy - goofers

  8. Tom Conboy plays football for SCSU, not hockey.

Would Andrew really want to follow in Tim's footsteps at SCSU? Tim didn't exactly leave on the best of terms. SCSU hasn't been known for it's thugs in recent years (Finger was the last), plus the PK is down this season. Despite the fact that our defense sucks, I don't really believe he'd be a positive addition. Andrew should probably just go pro.

  9. In the unlikely event that he picks the college route, is there a frontrunner? BU?

I've heard that Morin doesn't have the best academics. This is not a knock (because SCSU has even lower standards), but I would think that helps UND's cause. DU is pretty tough academically, BU is right up there too.

  10. exile may be able to answer this but what happened to Bryce Ravndalen a ex-warroad player with fargo as i see hes now playing in the nahl? im guessing he didnt cut it for dean in fargo. is he signed with scsu or do you think they will pull the offer? seems like a backwards move for him before going to college.

If I hadn't checked in about the Dell commitment I probably never would have noticed this post! Yes, Blais cut Ravndalen. Yes, Bryce has signed an LOI. Of course, that doesn't keep a college from recinding the scholarship. I really don't think his scholarship will be yanked though. I think Ravndalen will likely end up in the USHL next season as an overager, then on to the Huskies in 2010. There's still a chance he'll prove moderately productive in the long run, but it's looking like this may have been a gamble that didn't pan out.

As for recruits that the Sioux and the Huskies could be fighting over, I think Olsen could be a target for both, though I don't have any info on that. From Roseau, Knochenmus is probably a better prospect than Landman was. From Warroad, Hebel is the one to keep an eye on. I don't think there's anybody in St. Cloud's back yard that the Sioux would want to snipe, but Useldinger from EGF is a player I'm going to watch. The Gophers have probably given up on a few metro players that could potentially fit in at SCSU or UND (Faust from Bloomington-Jefferson, Prochno from Minnetonka, Palmquist from South St. Paul, Horgan from Mound Westonka, Reilly from Holy Angels, and Schmitz from Centennial are a few names that come to mind). I can't think of any players from the AJHL, BCHL, MJHL, or SJHL that are easily identifiable as targets for both UND and SCSU.

And, even though our 2009 class looks good, I'm kind of dissappointed that SCSU hasn't landed an NTDP player since Mosey. Next season, we'll have 3 Californians on the team (Eddy, Lasch, and Volpei). I really wish that was a good reason for Etem, Nieto, or Grimaldi to consider the Huskies.

  11. WHL, I bet.

    Western College Hockey has more.

    http://westerncollegehockey.blogspot.com/2...nkorama_24.html

    http://www.twincities.com/ci_10603492?nclick_check=1

Defenseman Nick Pryor, whose NHL rights are owned by the Anaheim Ducks and who is playing for the Des Moines Buccaneers of the U.S. Hockey League, has backed out of his commitment to the University of Wisconsin and is considering Maine, Boston College, North Dakota, St. Cloud State and Minnesota-Duluth.

  12. Where are Emerson Etem and Guan Wang playing this year? I know Etem garnered a lot of interest in the past.

Etem is with the NTDP. Wang might still be with the Shattuck U16 team, but I'm not sure about that.

Sorting out the teams for Shattuck can be confusing, but basically the best of the best will play for the "Prep" team, the "U16" team, or the "Bantam Tier 1" team depending on age. Players on the rest of the teams get some of the best hockey training in the world, but their prospects of playing at the collegiate level are dim at best.

Even SCSU has a few former Shattuck players, but Fallstrom and Greiner committing to Harvard and Kyle Murphy committing to Notre Dame indicates to me the direction that program will ultimately take.

  13. from western hockey blog

im sure there are a few we should keep our eyes on, anyone have any insight on these guys

Not as many high-end Minnesotans or NHL relatives on this team, so I think that takes some of UND's advantage away. I think the eastern kids will go east (duh), the California kids will gravitate towards Denver and CC, and the European kids will gravitate towards Ivy schools. In fact, I think the boarding school aspect of Shattuck will eventually steer more and more kids to Ivy and parochial schools. That certainly doesn't mean I don't think North Dakota will go after and potentially land a couple of these kids, just that the trends aren't pointing that way.

  14. Sorry, one Dahl-led win over us in the F5 doesn't mean that SCSU wasn't a joke pre-Motzko. They were. Face the facts.

    Dahl got lucky that year.

In fact, I'd go as far as saying (sorry Exiled One) if tUMD was the home of "Gopher rejects" then, under Dahl, the Huskies were the home of tUMD rejects.

SCSU was one step better than MSUM and two steps better than BSU under Dahl.

    That's my take on it.

Lucky that he had seven future NHLer's on the squad at the same time? I'll agree with that. If you say he was lucky to win the Final Five, I'd argue that he was unlucky because he couldn't get it done with college's most talented squad.

They had a nice streak of winning teams during that stretch. They didn't compare to the Sioux during the same stretch, but I was more interested in how they compared to the previous ten years, which was pretty favorable.

The "joke" was (and always will be) that we had a football player coaching our D1 hockey team. Dahl is a good man and was a natural leader (which is why Brooks liked him), but I don't think his calling was to be a championship winning hockey coach. Now let us never speak of this again. :silly:

  15. Yeah, that's what I meant. I also thought style of play changed. I remember reading about Nick Mattson's game drastically changing since joining the NTDP U17 team.

That's why I asked for clarification.

I think Mattson's style of play changed, again, because of the level of competition he was facing, not necessarily 100% driven by the NTDP coaches. Some changes are initiated by the players themselves.

For good or bad, one of the major things the NTDP looks for in recruits is potential. That is, they may or may not be dominant at the level they're currently playing at, but they have the tools to succeed at an international young adult level. That being said, they could have been dominant at their previous level (pointswise), but the NTDP didn't recruit them with that role in mind. Consequntly, some players who DIDN'T dominate pointswise will become the leading scorers for the NTDP, while others who DID dominate pointswise will become middle of the pack on the stat sheet.

Regardless, I think Ambroz will probably get an invite, though not every kid who led the Select 15 or Select 16 camps has. The bigger question is how both he and the NTDP might shape his personal skill set. Will he be a scorer, will he be a defensive forward, or will he become a true all-purpose superstar?

  16. UND probably isn't going to commit a scholarship to a 16 year old goalie and St. cloud was willing to do so. Sometimes it pays off, but it's a gamble. If Lee could have waited he might have been offered next year.

No need to crown Lee yet, USA Hockey didn't even let him play in the warmup games against the Europeans at the WJC Tryout Camp. They did, however, give icetime to the two 1991 born goaltenders. I certainly hope he's turns out to be everything he's touted to be, but I certainly wouldn't wager money that SCSU will have a higher NHL draft pick in net three years from now than the Sioux have.

  17. Please correct me if I do not have the correct understanding of what the NTDP does for players but...

If Ambroz goes NTDP, we should expect a shart dropoff in offensive production as the NTDP coaches work on Ambroz' weaknesses, perhaps more defensive forward play, skating, or whatever weaknesses he has.

Didn't Kristo's offensive production drop drastically between Minnesota high school and the NTDP?

    Am I completely off?

Are you talking about points? I think every kid's points dropped off their first year in the NTDP, but that's because of the level of competition they were facing.

  18. The rumor that Ambroz is going to play full time in the USHL next year was reported on 2 blogs that I read, they may be using each other as sources, but either way:

    http://theworldofjuniorhockey.blogspot.com/

    http://www.areavoices.com/force/

I knew Omaha had him protected, so that was the easy part. The first time I heard about him playing "full-time" in the USHL was from Hammy (Gopher Blog) on the Minnesota high school hockey message board. I think I mentioned that on hfboards, which is the "rumor" that the WOJH Blog was referring to. Area Voices could be referring to any or all of the above as their source.

So, basically, it's Omaha's protected list and Hammy's info... that's it.
