  1. I'd heard that Arizona St. did that. I'm not sure if that's the same source or a different one.

I remember that from a piece on "Sixty Minutes". They basically had to scout the entire country to fill spots on the roster, while there are hundreds of talented male gymnasts and wrestlers who have nowhere to continue their careers.

  2. I'm not a lawyer, but I did stay at an Holiday Inn express last night. ;)

Free speech is not absolute, but this was not even close to being anything criminal. Mr. Gonzalez is 100% protected by the 1st Amendment. Like I said before, people that constantly bring up the 1st Amendment (i.e. Dixie Chicks) do not understand exactly what is protecting them. They are protected from the government, but they are still responsible for their words with the general public. When radio stations refuse to play the Dixie Chicks for what they said, they are not infringing on the Dixie Chicks rights, they are exressing their own Constitutional right to play what they chose. Likewise when Mr. Gonzalez is beaten to a bloody pulp (I seriously hope he is), his 1st Amendment rights will not be violated (some other ones may be but that is another issue). :D

Thanks, jloos. It seems like you always hear some of the conservative pundits (Sean Hannity in particular) bring up the word treason when liberals start spouting off about the war. While I don't necessarily agree that we should try these people for treason, I was just wondering what one has to do to be charged with treason. If what "Hanoi" Jane Fonda did in Vietnam is true, I would certainly think those actions would fall under the realm of treason.

  3. I first saw it on the I-AA board, and of course all the UMass fans were getting alot of crap. It made my blood boil so bad I wanted to travel to Amherst and inflict bodily harm. If he thinks Pat Tillman is an idiot then all American servicemen who have ever went to war for this country are by his standards idiots. I know there's some lawyers on this board. When does one cross the line of free speech into treason?

  4. Thanks, I was most curious about baseball, track and field, and the "olympic" sports. I would guess that both mens' and women's bball would ramp up to 13 and 15, respectively right away. It would only be an increase of 3 for the men and 5 for the women, and those sports should generate enough revenue to cover those increases.

  5. What I meant was, if he's not up to DI he's in big trouble. Of course, that could be a big, common theme in some parts.

SUNY-Buffalo? I could get ten guys off a flag football field in Minot and give them a run. ;)

It'd be too easy to make a comment about things that maybe will maybe won't happen 45 years from now in Fargo, so I'll leave it alone.

However, 45 years ago in Grand Forks, they were celebrating an NCAA Mens Ice Hockey National Championship (over Michigan State, 4-3 in OT): The First of Seven.

Fair enough. And I agree, if Hunt and the rest of the team aren't up to I-AA standards, then we are in trouble. I'll think we'll do fine, but of course we'll know more in just a few months.:D

  6. Bison Football has "capped" their house four (or is it five?) times.

It was the same opponent in each case.

Sioux Football: The only team to consistently "cap" FargoDome for football.

I'm asking this because I really don't know (I was in grade school at the time). What was the attendance like at Dacotah Field in the 80's for Bison-Sioux games when the Sioux were awful?

  7. You'd better hope. Think about it before you respond.

I have no idea what that sentence is supposed to mean. When I say (or write) DI and the context is football I mean IA, if i'm referring to I-AA then that is what I'll type. And I stand by what I said, I think Rob Hunt (and a few other Bison) could start for a few DI teams. Heck, I'd put the whole team up against SUNY-Buffalo.

  8. For every UMKC there is a IUPUI. They've been a DI member since 1998 and already have one trip to the Big Dance and another appearance in the Mid-Con championship game. Geography is not a predictor of success or failure in this move.

  9. I totally agree with you about MAAC and Pioneer League teams still being DIII if they could. But I just don't know how anyone could argue that DI-AA is not more competitive than DII. About the watering down of DII, I could care less about who comes in to DII. What bothers me is when schools join DII, then whine about scholarships until the limit gets lowered. The SAC only allows 25 or so, but yet they do fine, and I've never heard fans, players, or coaches whine about inequity because of the reduced scholarships. It would be nice if the rest of DII took notice. It seems that in I-AA, the conferences that allow no scholarships accept the fact and don't try to lobby to get limits lowered.

And as a side, personally my biggest problem with DII is regionalization and the SSI playoff criteria, not the influx of new programs

  10. Tony, it really pains me to see you proclaim that you have upwards of 7 teams on the NDSU schedule that could run the table given UND's schedule. Last year, if I looked at UND's schedule and asked myself if Montana had it, would they be able to run the table. I probably would have said yes, but then a team that doesn't even qualify for the playoffs or win the "lowly D2 NCC" goes and beats them, and Montana was supposed to be the cream of the crop. Certainly no one around the country has or will put UC-Davis, Cal-Poly, Weber St, Valpo, Nicholls St, whichever non-cardinal Louisiana school it is, UNC, or anyone else I see listed in Montana's class. That is really all that needs to be said to refute the statement. NDSU proved last year by beating the nation's premier 1AA program in Montana that if a non-playoff D2 team can do it, there are a good 20-30 other D2 teams that could easily give a 1AA powerhouse such as Montana a run for their money. With that out there, how the Hell could as many as 7 teams on NDSU's schedule run the table given UND's, when NDSU proved the exact opposite point last year against a team a many times better then anyone I see on the Bison's schedule this year??

The only problem with that is that in DII there is a huge difference between being a playoff team and being one of the top 16 teams in the country. I would have easily put NDSU in the top ten last year, and given that there may have been a dozen DII teams that could have beat Montana on any given day. But Montana was far from being the premier team in I-AA last year. There is no (and I mean no) DII team that could have touched Delaware last year. I will stand very strongly by that statement too.

  11. In 2001, Central Washington had a 4-7 record. Their 2002 schedule included the defending D2 champ, a D2 semifinalist, and 2 I-AA opponents (including the eventual Big Sky champ).

If I would have boldly proclaimed 2 years ago at this time that Central Washington would not only go undefeated, but also beat each of those four opponents by at least 10 points, I would have been told I was crazy. CWU finished the 2002 regular season 11-0.

In 2002, North Alabama had a 4-7 record. Their 2003 schedule included a game against a I-AA opponent, a road game against 3 time defending GSC champ Valdosta St., not to mention the fact that UNA plays in one of the top 2 or 3 conferences in D2.

If I would have said last year at this time that UNA would be playing in the D2 semifinals with a 13-0 record, again, I would have been told I was crazy.

My point- it's foolish to proclaim that a group of teams would go undefeated if only they played a different schedule. You have no idea what teams might suddenly fall flat on their face (see NDSU 2002) or come out of nowhere to be a dominant like my above two examples.

I can say this with certainty, however: NDSU now plays in a division where 1/3 of all the schools give out less scholarships for football than Minnesota-Crookston. Bison fans will be treated to home games with two such schools and the Montana equivalent of Valley City State. Have fun! :D

Yes, and 95% of those schools (including Valparaiso) would wax UM-Crookston and MSU-Moorhead. Call it conjecture if you wish, but there is no doubt in my mind, and I would put a considerable amount of money on the outcome.

I will have a lot of fun watching NDSU play UC-Davis, Cal-Poly, Northern Colorado, and the two Southland teams. By the way, I also think Montana Tech would beat UM-Crookston and MSU-Moorhead and also we only play non-scholly at home.

  12. I was wrong, I think. I got to wondering about the Patriot and this is what I found. Patriot League rules If you go to page 36 toward the top it says football players cannot receive aid above need-based aid. But then it says (at least how I understand it) that if a football player does receive aid above need, it has to be reported bi-annually.

So I apologize for that error, but since we're way off topic nobody probably cares that much anyway.

  13. Well, here ya go since the link did not work on the GoBison.com website.

FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA--North Dakota State batters rapped Minnesota-Crookston pitching for 31 runs and 30 hits while the Bison pitching staff allowed the Golden Eagles just three hits in 14-0 and 17-0 wins here Tuesday in college baseball.

Seriously, is there anything UM-Crookston is good at?

  14. I really can't say who will pan out and who won't, but I would have to think Woodside is probably a can't miss with all the accolades he's received. But I agree with 92,96, this class would be excellent if NDSU were still a DII school, but I don't know how it stacks up as a DI class. Still, I think it's something we can build on for the future.

  15. And with SCSU being the 12th largest producer of teachers in the nation, that will be a tough sell. Teachers can be tight.

Wow, I didn't know that about SCSU. Along with nursing, teaching may be the noblest of professions. Not good when it comes to raising donations though.
