  1. very interesting PCM - thanks! Any news on UND's lawsuit? It appears the clock is ticking on getting a lawsuit filed and/or injuction available before the football team could reach the playoffs....if not, we'll be the road warriors!

Ummm. I think it is hostile and abusive not to mention insensitive to refer to "road warriors".... :D

  2. This may have already been posted but I was talking to the Sioux Falls Stampede Coach at a golf tourney and he indicated that Malone would be visiting UND this week and that he has narrowed his choices down to UND or Wisconsin.

TrunkMonkey, I doubt this prediction is much of a stretch (could be considered somewhat conservative) and it doesn't include several other players that will likely break the line up for a fews games this season such as Bishop and Martens....

I was not disagreeing with you just merely asking you who you thought would get the other goals. I hope your predictions are accurate as we will be a tough team to beat.

  5. Last year we scored 164 goals and were one of the highest scoring teams in the WCHA. 61% of those goals were scored by returning players so I don't see a lot of pressure being placed on incoming freshmen to score(which is good). I think we can all expect Oshie, Toews and Duncan to be around 20 goals each this season and our defense is better. We only lost 4 goals on defense from last year (Smaby). Its reasonable to assume we will get greater goal scoring production from the defense this year. We only scored 14 goals on defense last year and Brian Lee will absord what we lost offensively from Smaby himself. If we can get 10+ goals from guys like Porter, Kozek and Watkins (here's the guys with the highest level of pressure to perform this year), anything we get from the freshman and other players like Fabian/Kaip is a bonus.

All we need is a fraction of the level of productivity from our incoming freshmen over last year and we'll be in great shape.

Vandy is a big body sniper and depending on the role he is given by the coaches, has a good shot at scoring 10 goals. Forney too if he stays healthy. Who knows, Miller, Bishop and Zajac could all contribute more than we think.

IMHO I think we'll score 175+ goals this year but the bigger question is, how many will we give up?

We're going to have another great season of Fighting Sioux Hockey!

So if you expect Oshie, Toews and Duncan to each have around 20 goals and you are predicting the team will score 175 goals in total, who is going to score the other 105 goals?

  6. I really like Sioux Football but unfortunately quite a distance from GF so it is hard to follow the program other than info on the web. What is a realistic record for them this season and chances of post-season play?

  7. I made a reservation shortly after Milwaukee when the hotels in St. Louis were doing a discount for the Frozen Four tourney. Regardless if the Sioux are there or not, we will be going as it will be a great time even if they are not there. If they are, it will be an AWESOME time.

  8. I agree that this has been discussed to death but here is my two cents (or maybe less) - I think it only is a benefit to the competiveness of North Dakota hockey when we see the likes of South and Grafton and others competing head to head with the GF schools and holding their own. I grew up in GF and played hockey in GF and probably biased towards the GF program but more importantly I want to see growth within the hockey in ND and I think that is exactly what we are seeing.

I think it is great that a team from ND can play to the level of a top Minnesota team. In fact, didn't South beat Moorhead last year? So the question I ask rather than belittle each others programs, should we not be enthusiastic of the progress ND hockey is making. I no longer live in ND but from my perspective we have closed the gap bertween the ND and Minnesota quality gap. Considering that Minesota arguably is the best state for high school hockey, I believe that is quite the accomplishment.

  9. I was at the championship USHL game 7 where Okposo was by far the best player on the ice. He is the real deal and will be a thorn in the Sioux's side for a year or so.

I think it is a testament to the quality of the WCHA in getting the very best talent and being the best conference in the country.

  10. The other factor is that players have been known to develop and have breakout years from one season to the next. I think the Sioux have several players with that type of potential. All is not lost, even if Toews leaves.

With that being said, who is most likely to have a break-out year? I think that Kaip certainly showed improvement late in the year and Porter has alway been one that looks to be a playmaker but due to a variety of circumstances has yet to be able to do that. Duncan should continue where he left off as he is just a good playmaker. Unknowns in my mind are Kozek, Watkins and Miller. I was impressed last year when Miller got the chance he really showed some promise.

What are other folks thoughts as to who will have a "break-out" year?

  11. I really am having a hard time trying to understand why the NCAA and opponents of the Fighting Sioux nickname keep insisting that it is proper to ONLY be proud of White guys. Oklahoma is proud of the Sooners, Nebraska is proud of its farmers (Cornhuskers), Notre Dame is proud of the Irish, Monmoth is proud of the Scots, Grand Valley is proud of the Great Lakes sailors, Mississippi is proud of the Rebels (as is Las Vegas), Wyoming is proud of its Cowboys (UCSB calls its cowboys Gauchos), Denver is proud of the Pioneers, and the list goes on. These are ALL white guys and the pc crowd and the NCAA says "fine". I would think that there would be an uproar over no schools being proud of Blacks, Latinos, Hispanics and other minority groups and an ourpouring of support for those schools that express pride in American Indians.

A hypothetical: Suppose a school wanted to rename and chose to be proud of the Patriots who fought for liberty in the Revolution, especially those who came in slavery and fought for their and our freedom. This school renames itself "The Patriots" and as a logo adopts a Black man in Revolutionary War uniform and installs as a mascot a replica of the logo to inspire fans and be visible at all contests. Would this imagery be deemed "hostile and abusive"? If so, would it still be "hostile and abusive" if the logo and mascot were changed to a white guy? This is why I believe that the only way to settle this issue is in court. Is it permissible to use human imagery to represent institutions? The answer has to be either yes in all cases or no in all cases.

You raise great points. I have always wondered that if we had no Native American nicknames and still had the Cowboys, the Roughriders, the Patriots, the Vikings etc...that the politically correct crowd of today would be arguing that it is discriminatory that we have no nicknames that represent the Native American culture.

  12. Didn't work out? So by your logic, you'll surely admit that Z. Parise's and Bochenski's careers didn't work out. I didn't know you had to win a National Title in order for your college choice to work out. That's a new one.

Buckysieve, you are obviously passionate about Gopher hockey so I have to ask you a serious question. Doesn't it irritate you that when the Gophers got it handed to them by the Badgers in the 3rd place game of the Final Five, the don's response was "the last time I checked they don't hand out a trophy for the 3rd place game"?

I respect a program that goes out and plays to the best of their ability on any given night regardless of who is watching or what is on the line and not make excuses if things don't work out as planned. A UND defensemen said last year something to the effect that every time he put the Sioux jersey on, it meant something regardless of what was on the line.

I guess that is why I so dislike the Gophers under the don's reign because it does matter and they should have gone out and beat the Badgers to get on a roll into the NCAA's. Instead, one week later, one of the most talented teams on-paper was done for the year at the hands of HC. I would still be incensed if I were a Gopher fan as I would surely expect more than that.

  13. The past two years Irmen and Potulny went 3-1 against the Sioux at the Ralph while scoring an insane amount of points. Their freshman year Irmen was on the third line and Potulny was injured and only played in about 15 games. Neither player was a go to guy until their sophomore year, the same time they started owning the Sioux at the Ralph.

And you bring up '98-'99 and '99-'00? Those were the two worst teams the Gophers have had in the last 35 years. I would hope that the Sioux would've had success against crappy teams like that especially considering how great those Sioux teams were.

And Red Wing, I wasn't defending Piper or what he said. I never called anyone a nazi and I never will. And I also think you're crazy if you think the Gophers have a better offense than the Wild. I truly think that Gaborik and Rolston could put up 90-100 pts if they played 45 games against collegians.

And when it really mattered what happened? In Columbus Irmen looked like the beaten-up red-headed step-child while Potulny did his best impersonation of the Invisible Man. They had their chance to redeem themselves this year by winning the West regional and lost to Holy Cross. Had they played ND, my prediction would have been a another Sioux win but I guess we will never know on that one as your boys lost to HC.

  14. I have a copy of the warm-up music......but it doesn't say what the names of the songs are when I play it on my RealPlayer.

Right Now by Van Halen is when they come onto the ice and the following song is Stupified by Disturbed. Not sure as to the others.
