  1. Dumbest thread ever.  Comments from a bunch of clowns that never played hockey thinking checking would better women's hockey.  I used to post on here a lot, but the constant idiocy drove me away.  I came back to see what the village idiots were saying and this is what I find.  Glad to see most of you agreeing with gfhockey on this subject.

By the way, how do you explain the ever exciting football program losing 2.3 million?

    What a joke!

The point is that the REA was not God's gift from Heaven to Grand Forks due to unparalleled hockey fandom ... UND hockey is in a very fortunate position with that building. Many other big-time hockey universities do not have that luxury. Yet, even with that luxury for UND, the almighty hockey programs of the impeccable hockey town of Grand Forks took a hit.

Take note: the lesson is that hockey popularity (and feasibility) is far more fragile than you want it to be, even in Grand Forks and North Dakota.

Hockey will always be the envy of sports in GF.  Football will always have small mans syndrome to hockey at UND.

Got a note from Bubba a few days ago that we have sold 475 new season tickets since last year.  That's a nice number for this time of year.  Any extra butts in the seats means extra $$.

How many total season tickets sold in total?  How much do they cost?

Legit title contender equals 2 tournament appearances in 15 years with 0 wins? They were a contender with the twins. Lightning will not be in a bottle like that again and people still didn't attend those games.

2 appearances in 15 years, with a program that just started.  We can debate if Idalski was the right guy another time, but that fact is, bouncy ball will always just be a cute little program that will be measured by getting into a tournament that will have them be a whipping post to a far superior team.  Oh yeah, I forgot..... we get to do that with a 1.4 million audience.

It's sad and disappointing that we need to go to a blog to get the facts on the issue.  From the numbers there, of the $210k in WIH revenue, $160k was direct institutional support (I assume that's money from UND).  So really, it's $50k in revenue and the team lost closer to $2.1 million in FY 2016.  Also, there is no way the $3,100 for marketing and promotion includes all the marketing and promotion expenses incurred by the REA.

The $160k was probably merchandise revenue sharing and other such dollars.  Probably too much benefit given to most programs through this funding source, but a way to soften the blow.  I liked seeing the financial statement for WH.  Would like to see all sports financial statements as well.  If we are going to take shots at one program, I would like to see all programs get the same scrutiny!  WH is an easy target because of the lack of ticket revenue, but let's look at all of the other programs to get a true overview.  Does anyone know how to find the reports similar to what Port added to his article?

  6. I define Championship level programs as those that have a legitimate chance at winning a national championship.  Not winning a Slummit League or a Big Sky league.

Does Oregon have a legitimate chance at winning a football championship?  Yep

Does Gonzaga have a legitimate chance at winning a basketball championship?  Yep

Does UND honestly have a chance in any sport aside from hockey?  Except for the football long shot, none come close!

If someone from outside the area asks you about the UND basketball team, and you reply that we are a championship level program because we won the big sky, you get laughed out of the bar.

Its not the reason I am disappointed the WH program was cut, but it was the only other sport aside from MH that had a legitimate chance at a national championship.  What really bothers me is that it impacts girls hockey into the youth level.  Girls hockey is still a relatively new sport.  When UND cut the program, it was kind of a slap in the face to all girls that play hockey in the area.  While very, very few girls would actually would play for UND, the dream and role models were there for the local kids.

What I still don't understand is how Bemidji, St Cloud, and Duluth can make it work, but we can't?

The softball team travels much more.  Do they have that many less scholarships?  Are they coaches paid much less?

Could the WH program made cuts to get them in a better position?

it takes away from the many other championship-level athletic programs at UND

    Now that's funny!

Championship level programs at UND?  I can come up with one that I could pass the red face test with.  Other than that you would get laughed out of the bar.

By the way, we are a hockey school.

    You're in the minority.

Would even 5,000 people watch a hypothetical UND women's hockey national title? Doubtful based on popularity and following.

1.4 million (1,400,000, not 5,000) did just care about a game UND men's basketball was playing in and tuned in.

Is the majority wrong? Doesn't matter because the majority breeds $.

In contrast, the minority - which includes women's hockey in general - loses $.

How much money does Football, WBB, and MBB make?

I disagree. If NDSU, Montana, and Montana State can win a national championship, why can't UND? Tremendous expense in sports not even sponsored by the aforementioned schools is one major reason for UND's shortage in football; now, after this cut, UND can actually make practical progress. Hockey is niche and UND's and North Dakota's budget do not allow for it, particularly in the case of a non-attended hockey program which was UND women's hockey.

UND football is not a long shot. Women's hockey with its 800 total followers was the long shot. The right decision was made today.

Football is a long shot!  One NCAA championship in our entire existence.  I was there.  Problem is all of our programs besides hockey are long shots.  Football has the best chance of all of them.  After that program, the rest are no shots!

Women's hockey may not be in the Olympics much longer if there are only 2 teams that can win it every year. Kind of like UConn women's basketball, who cares anymore other than UConn fans!

Maybe we should cut women's basketball next!  To balance it out get rid of the men's program as well.  We will never win a national championship in BB.  Get to the dance once a decade.  Maybe win one or two NCAA tourney games starting in the same time frame.  Sounds like a great level for us.  But we can hang a Slummit League banner once in awhile.  Oh I forget, we will get that great exposure of getting our butts kicked in front of 1.4 million people.

OK, I put this out on twitter too, so here is something that just dawned on me.  I would put money on it that someone in the WCHA leaked this to the writer in Wisc. for some ill will  from the men basically being a part the breakup of the old WCHA.  Just putting in my 2 cents on why a guy from Wisc. breaks the story and not Brad.

This news was leaked last Wednesday!

The university has a problem funding everything right now. If we didn't cut that or any sports that we are required to keep right now for both Summit and Big Sky, cuts are made academically.

You make it sound like certain cuts in academia would be a bad thing for UND.

When all the tweets and facebook posts start coming in from players, alumni, politicians, famous people, etc., we need to keep in mind that everyone who disagrees with this decision is likely to make their opinion public.  However, the people that agree with it, or at least understand it why it happened, have little or no motivation to publicly express their opinion (or be called callous, or even sexist).  So what we see on social media today is not at all indicative of public opinion.

Kind of like losing the logo???

WDAY having live chat tonight.  All the Fargo media are really coming up with a lot of reasons why JJ didn't commit to NDSU.     NDSU doesn't have any scholarship money left at RB,  he's not good enough,  NDSU doesn't have the academics he wants,  he isn't as good as Morlock was,  and on and on and on.   Kind of funny.   There just have to be a reason that is satisfactory to them.  Not having scholarship money is laughable.  There is no way NDSU would not find money for a Fargo kid that is as good as he is.

They wanted him from UM badly!  I heard it straight from the ag school hc.

Not sure if mentioned in this thread or not, but sounds like Johansson (Fargo kid) is probably gonna leave UM.  Also sounds like he has higher interest in UND than the Ag School.

The AG school coaches wanted him bad and couldn't believe he would chose lowly UND over them.

As a hockey fan I'd figure you would appreciate a good choke

Touché!  However, to be able to choke you have to be a team that is expected to win on a consistent basis.  The football team did choke today, but when was the last time this team choked to a reputable team in the playoffs?  Never at the FCS level.  To me this just means the football team is back on the map!

  18. Tough pill to swallow for the boys.  As a program this will only make us stronger.  What this team needs to learn now; coaches and players, is how to finish a team you have on the ropes.  Brady should have rushed for 50+ yards in the fourth quarter.  That is the teams mantra!  I believe the coaching staff really didn't know what to do with such a lead midway through the 3rd quarter.  This is where I always give credit to the AG.  When they get a lead, they really know how to finish.  Anyways, next year is another year of Bubbas recruits and added depth.  I wouldn't fire anybody, but I would definitely put the heat on coaches to stay true to our identity.  That didn't happen today.

If anyone told me at the start of the season we would have run the table in conference play and lost in the second round of the playoffs without once getting dominated all season, I would have taken the deal and ran with it.  Congrats to Bubba and his crew for taking us from laughing stock to respectability!

Got a hdmi cable? Or roku? Chromecast?

If you have a hdmi cable for your dvd player or playstation (they use those right?) easiest way is to use that to stream the picture from computer to tv (laptops that is of course ;).

My Sony blu ray player had a cast feature built in so I could also use that to stream from my phone or tablet to the tv.

    I hate ESPN!
