  1. Que?

    That was wierd.

So, If an artist does a statue of a Sioux warrior, and have it bronzed here in Northern Colorado, it isn't an actual Sioux warrior unless the artist is a Sioux warrior?

    Whaaaaa?

By that logic, the paintings of the presidents of the United States in the White House aren't actually painting of presidents because the presidents didn't do them? Only artists of various backgrounds did them, so they are invalid.

Or even if one of the presidents of the United States looks at one of those paintings, let's say the one of President Kennedy done in an impressionist style, and says, "Well, that's not a valid painting, because it wasn't done in a neo-gothic or early american style." Would that mean that the painting itself is an invalid representation of President Kennedy because, let's say, President Clinton didn't like it or didn't think it was valid?

Now you did it, my brain hurts.

  2. I live right by the Budweiser Events Center, home of the CHL champion Colorado Eagles.

I think they (CHL teams) are big and slow. Without the two line pass rule (which the CHL eliminated) any top college team would win. Currently, UND fits that bill.

But, as far as who "rules" the campus....duh. UND Hockey....period. That's the way it is and that's the way we like it.

I like the football team, but hands down I prefer watching UND hockey.

I want to further clarify my point for using the picture above.

We are told by the NCAA that UND's use of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo is "hostile and abusive" to American Indians. The NCAA has justified its policy on this issue as being similar to the policy it adopted on the confederate flag issue. But this picture proves that the two issues are not at all similar.

You can visit the Prairie Knights Casino on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation and see these "hostile and abusive" words and images in widespread use. If the words and images are truly offensive, hostile or abusive to residents of the reservation, the tribal government wouldn't be subjecting its people to such treatment.

Does the NAACP fly the confederate flag from its headquarters at the same time it demands that everyone else -- except African Americans -- must avoid displaying the flag or face punishment? Of course not. That's because blacks see the confederate flag as a symbol of an oppressive government that sought to keep them enslaved. They see the confederate flag as a symbol used by the KKK to threaten, intimidate and kill them.

This is clearly not the case with American Indian names, mascots and logos. Polls show that a large majority of Native Americans have no problem with sports teams using these words and images. More recently, thanks to the NCAA, we've learned that there are tribes across America actively supporting the universities that use their names and images.

If the entire Sioux Nation banned the words and images it claims are offensive, then perhaps GrahamKracker, his supporters and the NCAA would have a valid argument. As it stands now, they don't.

I guess I was also wondering why you were showing the statue in front of the casino. Now I know.

That is a very good case you make here, PCM. The case that the logo cannot possibly be found "hostile and abusive" if a statue like this is in front of the casino.

    Point taken.

  4. This is a bit off subject, but I think it pertains to the overall discussion.

A couple of years ago, I was in East Grand and went to Whitey's. I hadn't been there, or at least the bar knows at Whitey's since before the flood.

I had a few beers with my brother and on my way staggering out bought a "Whitey's" T-shirt. It was blue with a bit old white lettered "Whitey's" logo on the shirt with all the other information in small print. I didn't think too much of it when I bought it, going to school in the area and being so familiar with that bar. (To the detriment of my grades! :D )

Anyway, I get home to Colorado, put that shirt on and was heading out the door when my neighbor looked at it and said "Where did you get that shirt?" I told him about the bar in the old college town. He looked at it, wasn't offended, but pointed out that the shirt's logo may not be understood by certain people.

Well, to make a long story short, I thought it over and decided to just wear that shirt on my trips to the Grand Forks region and doing yardwork or in the neighborhood where folks know me. Sounds wierd, but I am a bit nervous wearing that shirt elsewhere.

What do you guys think? Personally, I just didn't want any potential problem from wearing that shirt, .

In the meantime, anytime I wear my Sioux jerseys I get nothing but compliments anywhere I go in Colorado.

  5. Okay.

Now, I read an article at the beginning of the issue about how supportive the Seminole tribe is of FSU's nickname. (Which, of course I can't find right now, figures)

In that article it stated that while one Seminole tribe in Oklahoma supported the nickname, some group of five tribal councils (I believe?) including five different Seminole tribes oppose the use of the nickname. In either case, the NCAA granted an exemption without having 100% full support for the Seminole name amongst all involved.

Why is this important? Because it establishes a precedent. Now, how can the NCAA possibly not grant an exemption to the Fighting Sioux nickname if one Sioux tribe supports it, yet another Sioux tribe opposes it?

    Anyway, that's my .02.

Also, I think that a white guy riding a horse with Native gear on and then slamming a spear in the middle of a football field doesn't honor anyone.

    You go, PCM!

  6. Well, responding to the use of Dakota, we'll just call our school the University of North.

Also, why don't we just charge the Big Sioux Truckstop $1 a year to place all those thousands of Sioux logo designs in the Ralph. We'll just call it "advertising" for the Big Sioux Truck Stop! ;)

  7. *IF* for some reason the NCAA manages to force UND to get rid of the Sioux name, then I would say not use any name.

Just have uniforms, etc that say North Dakota. or University of North Dakota. Keep the same colors. But refuse to obtain a new nickname.

If anyone asks, just say we used to be the Fighting Sioux, but the NCAA took it from us and we don't want another name.

    Call me bitter.

  8. From the Miami Herald 8/20/2005:

NCAA waffles; FSU might get to remain the Seminoles

Note the use of the word "waffles" in response to the NCAA's latest action. As expected, FSU is looking out for its own interests and nobody else's.

The good news? FSU has opened the door to exemptions. UND needs to emphasize its number of American Indian students, the programs for them and the results they produce. A new resolution from the Spirit Lake Sioux strongly endorsing UND's use of the Fighting Sioux name wouldn't hurt, either.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Hopefully the Spirit Lake Tribe will help out.

PCM, is there anything we can do to encourage them to produce a supporting resolution?

  9. I have two very close friends who would be pictured by the definition of "bleeding heart liberal" in the dictionary, and at lunch the other day both surprised me by wondering what all the fuss was over UND's nickname. In fact, the one thought it was something for the Native Americans to be proud of. Both, at the same time, abhor the Chief Yahoo logo and the Redskins nickname.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Totally agree here. Both of my brothers attended UND. (They both graduated elsewhere.) I attended and graduated from UND. Despite that, we are all stinking left wing pinko's :glare: Yet we all dig the Fighting Sioux logo and the name. We all also don't like the Wahoo and the Redskin nickname.

They are respectful at UND. Ralph went out of his way to reach out to the Native American community. I feel it is more beneficial to them to keep the name. They will keep the name out there and probably increase funding to the programs that they want/need.

I emailed and am writing all the folks I can think of to raise cain about this issue. Let's stick together and not get into namecalling. You would be surprised who is on the side of the name and logo. ;)

  10. I see a lot of hits to this website and this thread in particular. It seems a real waste of our energy to just sit here and complain about what the NC$$ has done.

What I would like to see are some suggestions on what, exactly, we can do as individuals or collectively to throw a monkeywrench in the plans of the NC$$ to get rid of nicknames like the Fighting Sioux.

    Suggestions?

  11. I see UND stuff everywhere I go.  Just the other day, I was at a mall in the cities area with my sioux hat on, a couple kids passed by and said "SIOUXXXXX", they also had Sioux gear on.  Doesn't surprise me where we are on that list.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

That happens to me in the Denver area. DU fans will approach me at times and tell me what a great run it was for the whole WCHA. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Then, after we part ways, I do a silent prayer to the hockey gods that the Sioux kick their arse next year!

  12. To anybody in Columbus,

Find Jim.... sober him up.. .lend him your laptop or go to an internet cafe...get him to update the brackets and put the score of the Sioux/Rodents game in the hockey home section!

    Jeez...

  13. Maybe he's even further behind the technology curve than I am.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    You got that right!

Someday, somehow...I WILL figure out how to record from my DTV to my VCR when I'm not there!

I'll be able to catch the first period, then off to the meeting. My brother will text message me the scores...which I will cleverly look at and bite my tongue during the meeting. So...that part of technology I understand.

Honestly, even if I recorded it...I'd fast forward to the end to see who won, or call my brother up in Nodak for the score before I watched the game.

    Disciplined, I am not! :D

  14. ARGGGGHHHHH!!!!

I can't watch most of the game. I'll probably miss the 2nd and 3rd period. I have to attend a funding meeting for school. It's a once a year meeting. So, my brother will text message me during the game, while I sneak a look from time to time..

It's not fair.... Lifes not fair...
