I commented about you saying "why would they issue anything with Sioux on it". I don't think they issue gear to every employee at UND, I'm sure the person telling you about the new rule wasn't talking to a head coach, just an employee. Can't they buy as the "general public"?

The discussion was about staff in the athletic department, not every employee at UND. Many people other than head coaches are issued company clothing. Staff can be required to wear clothing with the current name and logo for work or official functions, it is done in businesses of all sizes all over the country all of the time. Just ask anyone that has worked for a company that changed their name or logo. It is all about building the brand for the organization. Athletic department staff can wear Sioux stuff at home or out grocery shopping if they want.

Yeah it was two days collected into one and guaranteed (Ralph or a business?) to be above $50,000.

You responded to a post about the jackpot (even mentioned twice). I responded to both his post and yours, again about the jackpot. Then you change the story to be about the "pot". And you accuse me of just wanting to argue when I was just providing accurate information about the original post in this string. They guaranteed that the jackpot would be at least $25,000 (as per the headline in the earlier linked article). The actual winner got more than $50,000.

Regardless of ones personal preference, it's important to let people know the jackpots at the Ralphs 5050 isn't ones winnings.

You sure your not a lawyer or at least want to be? And just like to argue. They absolutely guaranteed the pot would be $50,000 it's not even a question! Because otherwise they would have guaranteed the pot was $25,000. I can't believe I'm having this conversation. (You can go ask jody how much the office pool got to in the Ralph about how large they thought the "pot" was going to get that night...hint it started out at $50,000)...

The article linked states this in the first sentence. ......

"The Ralph Engelstad Arena will hold a 50/50 raffle with a $50,000 pot". And then the next line could have read but 82SiouxGuy says "but it's not a guarantee that the pot will actually be $50,000. (Boy that would be confusing just like 82s implied "well the other $25,000 was never guaranteed by anyone to go to UND making it not a true 5050." :silly:)

The jackpot is the prize given to the winner, not the total amount sold. When they give away a Powerball jackpot it is the prize given out, not the total number of tickets sold. The "pot" doesn't have to be the same as the jackpot. And the name alone, 50/50, should be a clue that you only get 50% of the total tickets sold.

I only consider the portion that people can actually take home as the jackpot. They didn't guarantee that the pot would get to $50,000, they guaranteed that someone would win at least $25,000.

    $51,000 in unpaid specials.

UND owns the land. That means the State of North Dakota owns the land. The state does not pay real estate taxes. There are no real estate taxes paid on the rest of the campus either.

Specials are paid over a number of years rather than all in 1 large sum. The state does pay specials. This special assessment started in 2015 and is being paid over a 10 year period.

It's recognized that data centers are normally detached stand alone developments, like in the mountains of North Carolina with alternative power supplies, green power options, low cooling costs, low natural disaster probility, etc.  But nevertheless, with UAVS there are some advantages to having nearby software development, as microseconds or less could make a difference.  Where ever one is located in the GF area, it would require significant investment just to prep the location.  Of course there are backups, as that goes without saying, but they would be half a continent away.

In the last legislative session, laws were changed to help atract a data center for the UAV industry.  Seemed like it was inevitable because of UAVs, and it wouldn't happen without them.

Modern software development is rarely co-located with a data center and important data is rarely stored in only one data center.

There was talk a few years ago, before the UAS development, about building a data center in the Grand Forks area. One of the things they were looking at was locating in a place where they could hook up to both Xcel Energy and Nodak Electric so that they could have back up power in case one system or the other went down.

Is the Ray Richards course on 80 acres (or maybe 75)?  With undeveloped land on 32nd Ave and 42 St going upwards of $500,000 an acre, sale of golf course could maybe swing $30 mill.  Frontage property on 42nd and Demers will not be cheap, as Grand Forks doesnt have much in the way of developable land left on the major corridors.  This was initiated by Schafer, who put Ray Richards on a review list and knows how to swing a business deal, as does his successor.

Not a golfer, but would be nice if UND bought property south of the airport from the proceeds and developed a new UAS and Research park along with a golf course.  This might give impetus for East Grand Forks to develop their 9 hole course across from the Lincoln course, which would connect with Lincoln via the pedestrian bridge on the Green Belt.

Yeah, yet a Dinkytown would be built on Ray Richards, maybe even mixed office buildings.  Grand Sky relies on Emerado's dining scene for a varied lunch menu of Domino's and Subway.  Sounds very appealing to corporate types.

Software development doesn't have to be at Grand Sky, which remains my point.

You proposed another UAS and Research park near the airport. I pointed out that they are not likely to do that since they are just developing the first UAS park near the AFB and have plenty of space to expand that if needed. They also have plenty of space to expand dining services and choices near Emerado, including building such businesses on the UAS park. They are very likely to expand those services since they are projecting to have up to a couple of thousand people working in the park in a few years, and those people will need a place to eat. You've probably heard of supply and demand.

The last report I heard was that the Dairy Queen in Emerado was for sale if someone wants a good investment opportunity.

Those are really operational development facilities.  The new Robin Hall has research facilities.  Software development is a key to UAS, and those personnel don't need to be located on the base.  When UAS need massive software development, so more buildings for programming companies will be required.

Grand Sky is 217 acres. It will include operations, research, and training. They aren't going to build a 2nd business park for UAS before the first one gets developed and is operational. There is plenty of acreage available around the base if that park needs to be expanded in the future.

There is a reason that Dave St. Peter is listed under the Administration and not Baseball Operations on the Twins website. His whole career has been on the operations side (Pro Shop Manager, Corporate Communications and Business Affairs). He is not responsible for the baseball side of the organization and if it was, with his background I'm not sure how it would make any sense that he would be. I'm sorry if his title is too confusing for you to comprehend but blaming him for that seems odd. If he was responsible for the baseball side, he'd be the General Manager, no different than most other franchises. That is the person who is in charge of the baseball side of organizations.

It might also be helpful to note that in addition to Dave St. Peter's position as president, the team is currently looking for a President of Baseball Operations, which would supervise the General Manager. Several teams have gone to this model rather than having the General Manager as the highest ranking baseball position. The Twins plan to have 2 different people on staff with the title of President, one for administration and one for baseball operations.

It's a very complex situation and a different one for each guy. You can't help but feel bad for some of them and others not so much.

There were a couple of guys that you just wanted to shake and tell them to wake up. Then there was the guy who got it at the end of the season. He transferred to a school for the education and decided to give up football. He knew he couldn't play at the DI level. I'm pretty sure his family had a little money so he could afford to go to college without the football scholarship. Definitely a complex situation and each player has their own challenges.

  11. 32 minutes ago, geaux_sioux said:

Some of the players they get are hardly literate what else would you expect? If nobody ever expected those kids to do anything other than ball in highschool how could they possibly be prepared for college?

If they are barely literate they probably aren't good candidates to be students at a Division I school. Everything is about football for them, education is more of an afterthought. It will work out for a few and they may make it to the NFL for a little while. Most of them will probably end up back where they came from. Most of them seem to come from broken homes and low income areas. That isn't their fault. It also isn't their fault that they aren't prepared for college. It's just too bad that so few of them will take advantage of a chance to get an education and maybe improve their lives.

  12. I thought it was interesting. The school really caters to the players. They have some pretty strict rules about attendance and grades, but they also baby the players to get them through it. The focus on grades is just to keep them eligible to play or to move on to a 4 year school, they don't seem to be worried about players actually getting an education. It really shows the importance that the region places on football.

Does anyone have an update on Ratelle? I saw and heard that the Falcons are negotiating an injury settlement with him, but there's nothing listed on the Falcons web site. He's not on the roster and he's not listed as released or waived. Also - what happened? I know he played in that last preseason game.

He was given an injury settlement and released. I haven't seen any details, but he injured an ankle during the last preseason game. He had 1 catch for 15 yards during the game.

I'm mainly saying that if you had an event like this with the Sioux logo, or at least a nice looking Fighting Hawks logo, there would have been more people. I didn't take my kids there because they think logo is ugly. They are 10 and 8, and they told me this before I even stated my thoughts about the new logo. I was optimistic about the logo reveal, and it was just a letdown.

Everyone's opinion of the logo is subjective. Of course some people, like young children, may be reflecting the opinion of their parents. As others have noted, not everyone liked the Brien logo when it was introduced. An event bringing back the old logo would definitely bring in a larger response, but it isn't happening. Hundreds of people must have shown up if they gave away 500 pucks plus other things. This was a minor event on a Saturday morning in August, before school has started. There is no way that a huge crowd was going to line up before the store opened.

  15. 9 minutes ago, KoolGuy2K said:

I don't believe they had an event like this though. Having athletes signing autographs, games for kids, and giveaways.

Sidenote- Was Erich Longie there to get his hands on this beautiful new logo?

You still haven't listed anything that would draw a huge crowd BEFORE the store opened. They gave away something like 500 hockey pucks. First, that means quite a few people showed up. But it also means that you didn't have to get there early to get one. Are you going to take some little kids and make them wait in line to play some kids games? The hockey trophy has been all over the region. This was an event to get some PR and bring a larger than normal group of customers out on a Saturday. I can guarantee that the UND bookstore doesn't normally have 500 customers on a middle of August Saturday.

They had a whopping 30 people waiting outside when the doors opened. Peter Johnson said it was because 9 am is too early for most people. ;)

How many people did you expect to be waiting outside for a store to open so they could buy merchandise that is going to be available for several years? Especially on a beautiful Saturday morning in Grand Forks.

Looks like Hornbachers in GF has put the finishing touches on the proposed PepperJax restaurant in the NE corner of the grocery store parking lot (said to block visibility of the store). The excavation has been filled in and the surface has been paved over. Will the city be writing a big check to cover the losses incurred?

Why would the city write a check? They have had nothing to do with this issue. It is a private matter between Hornbachers and the developer (with PepperJax thrown in). There could very well be a lawsuit involved, but those are the 3 parties that will be involved.

You don't get paid on what you have done in the past, you get paid on what you are doing now and he isn't worth $23mm, that's how sports work.

Actually, most professional athletes, especially baseball players, ARE paid based on what they did in the past rather than what they are doing now. Free agents get big contracts when they are 30 or 32 or 35 based on what they did in the past. They are rarely worth anything close to the annual contract value during the last 2 or 3 years of the contract. And the same players make a fraction of what they are worth during their first 5 or 6 years in the majors unless they sign an extended contract that takes away at least a couple of free agent years. Has Alex Rodriguez been worth $27.5 million the past few years? Has Josh Hamilton been worth his contract? CC Sabathia? Ryan Howard? Is David Price going to be worth the contract he signed last year when his ERA has gone up by 2 runs this year already? Then there are guys like Prince Fielder, Mark Teixeira, and Justin Verlander getting more than $20 million per year and producing much less than that for multiple years.

  19. 40 minutes ago, siouxforcefans said:

Quoted and bolded to be preserved for eternity. Or until the Twins change this maddening behavior.

A number 1 starter contract is $20-25 million per year for at least 5 years. The Twins have been giving out $12-13 million per year for 3-5 years.

Are we to expect more cutting at UND, with the state legislature addressing a significant additional budget shortfall?

The Legislature doesn't even know for sure what they are doing in the special session, so it is impossible to answer this question right now. However, UND made more cuts during the last round than they needed to do, so those extra cuts may cover part or all of what they might be asked to do after the special session is done.

True and good call, I was trying to keep it in the context that Dan was using, as in primary school colors.

Gray isn't even a new color for UND football teams. As has been noted before, gray pants and helmets were used 40 years ago.
