You seem to believe that the NCAA would try to accomplish their goal by going through the courts and filing for breach of contract. Many of us believe that they would skip the courts and impose their own penalty if they don't like UND going without a nickname. They would first cite the settlement agreement stating UND agreed to choose a new nickname. They would then impose the same penalty given for schools with Native American nicknames that don't have permission. UND would have to sue to fight those penalties.Here we go again…no nickname = no violation = no sanctions.
And by "damages," I am referring to the NCAA. A breach of contract case requires the establishment of a contract, a breach, and harm. The NCAA has not been harmed. There is no economic incentive for the NCAA to bring the lawsuit.
If the NCAA felt they were losing that case they could issue a new rule by the Executive Committee saying that all schools must have a nickname or something similar. That is how they forced UND to accept the settlement agreement, they rewrote the rules that allowed them to create policies like the NA Nickname policy.
The NCAA is not going to sue for damages, UND would most likely be the party forced to file a lawsuit. No one can see the future and know for sure, but this scenario fits the pattern of how the NCAA has handled many situations in the past. The NCAA would have a hard time proving monetary damages filing a lawsuit, but that isn't their goal. Their goal is to eliminate NA references at their events where they can. Creating new rules is how they have accomplished that goal so far.

I was using hyperbole which is the case just about any time something is described as the worst thing ever. I tend to do that every now and then. I would say out of that list fighting green would fit in with big red, big green, big blues, and mean green. Those names are worse than crimson, cardinal, blue, or orange in my opinion, which is the group I would consider green and white to be in. The latter group is worse than any other sort of nickname. I would rather have a WNBA name, soccer name, or something stupid like turd sandwiches or giant douches than a simple color.
So I guess as a general thought (putting my ESPN analyst hot sports take hat on) nicknaming YOUR TEAM after a COLOR or even worse using an adjective to DESCRIBE THAT COLOR is worse than AIDS! It is worse than slavery! It is worse than the crown prince of darkness himself, SATAN!!!!
I know what your point was. But I don't think that throwing out those extremes helps the discussion at all. In most cases it just polarizes people. I could probably find a group of people that would use the same description (worst ever) for every nickname on the list, and every nickname that exists in the world. They can't all be the worst and describing them as the worst isn't helpful in trying to pick out one that will work. That was my point.

And of course fighting green is two adjectives describing nothing resulting in what would definitely be considered the dumbest nickname of any team, anywhere, in the history of the known universe.

Or maybe you were just stretching things a little? How about Green and White, the other name used now by people like the Grand Forks Herald? Somehow Fighting Green is that much worse than Green and White?

And what's their logo/mascot again? Do we really want to go down that path with the NCAA again?
Unless you have another idea for a logo mascot for a "Dakotan" or "Nodak?"

They don't have a mascot, they dropped it in 2007. Their logo is
the letter I. They have used variations of this as a logo or secondary logo for years. They also used a Native American logo for many years, but have dropped it. I wasn't advocating for Nodaks, I was just pointing out that there is a precedent for using a shortened version of the state name. The interlocking ND could continue to serve as a logo, or another logo using the letters N and D could be created, or another logo could be designed with a farm or ranch theme or any other theme that relates to life in North Dakota. Logo options would be pretty wide open. I would consider Nodaks better than some on the list and worse than others, kind of the safe but boring option. -
To me, "NoDaks" comes off as lazy. Like we weren't able to come up with anything else so we shortened our state name. If we go with Nodaks, what will our logo be? A farmer? A Scandinavian looking person? A Native American?
Anyone think the South Dakota sodaks is a good name? Or the Montana Tanas or Montes or montanans? Or Minnesota Minnie's? I think you get the drift...

What I noticed:
Of the "no nickname" schools (and the "I don't know if they have one" schools) there's only one playing NCAA Division I athletics without a nickname.
You only get one guess as to whom it is.
Don't have time to look, but I believe Slippery Rock uses Rock, and doesn't have another nickname.
Slippery Rock University, located in Slippery Rock, PA, uses The Rock as their official nickname. They used to use Rockets, but most people called them The Rock so they changed it. They have a mascot named Rocky, Pride of the Rock. He is made of rock but looks like a lion. This mascot was created in 2007. A former mascot looked like a rock. Slippery Rock competes in Division II, not Division I.

I'm not going to check every name on that list, but the vast majority of those schools don't have sports (remember this is a sports nickname issue). Most of those schools are medical, law or art related. At least a few are online only schools. They don't have athletic departments and don't compete in the NCAA, NAIA or any other organized competition above the club team level. As far as I have seen in past research, the only schools with collegiate athletics that don't have a nickname are Hollins University and the University of North Dakota. Feel free to examine each school on that list and find other schools that actually have sports but don't use a nickname.

A better role model that a school named the Sun Dogs
If a school can be successful as the Banana Slugs then they could be successful as the Sun Dogs. I don't like it, but almost anything is better than no nickname (and North Dakota is not a sports nickname).

Not true...I believe there are three other schools with no formal nickname.
The only school I know of that doesn't have a nickname other than UND is a small, private women's college in Virginia named Hollins University. They have about 800 students and compete in DIII. Not exactly a great role model for a DI school to follow.

dynasty shmynasty. teams that are on the verge of being called a dynasty don't blow second period leads with a chance to go up 2-0 in a series. they build on them and go up 2-0, i.e. the redwings of the late 90's and even the islanders of the early 80's. you have the chance to put a stranglehold on this series and let it slip away and allow a backup goalie to come in and get the win. good lord. maybe my expectations are too high.

4 straight wins in college (highest budget in d1 so you are the big dog) is easier/harder than 16 wins in the postseason aginst dogs that are just as big or bigger (ny rangers, red wings, maple leafs)
In college they play 4 one game series. Lose any of those 4 games and you are done.
The NHL plays 4 series where you have to win 4 games before you lose 4. Losing 1 game isn't the end of the series, unless you have already lost 3 other games in that series. Most teams lose at least 1 game in each series. Winning 4 games in a row just means that you have won a single series, you still have to defeat 3 other teams 4 times each. A team doesn't have to win 16 games in a row. Your argument is comparing totally different situations, and if you really believe they are comparable you don't understand sports at all.

Hasn't been posted yet. Same open record laws for any position that is open to outside candidates. The main difference is that the period of time they have to keep the job open changes by the level of the position. I don't know how long they have to hold the assistant hockey coach job open, my guess is 1-2 weeks from the time it is posted.

he also said it was the strength of a program to not lose anyone. the point I'm trying to make is one of the first names to come up over the years if Hak ever left is Sandelin. he has a good resume, one that includes a natty, being an assistant under Blais, being a good recruiter and an Alum of UND. was that avenue even explored? I don't think anyone would have been disappointed had that avenue been explored. Why didn't Schlossman or any other reporter ask the question? or do some probing in the days after? instead they don't want to ruffle any feathers and have their interview credentials taken away. I mean what's the toughest question Schlossman has ever asked? any updates on Chay? Were Ohio State fans disappointed when Urban Meyer was hired instead of Luke Fickell?
Berry was an employee of the University. As such they could promote him without going through the extended hiring process needed to hire someone from outside the University. That process would take a minimum of several weeks, and could easily take more than a month. During that time you are giving players and recruits time to think about moving on to other places to play. Berry could be promoted the same day. He is a very qualified coach, and part of the reason he was brought back was to potentially fill this role if the head coaching position opened.
Sandelin, Dave Tippett, and any other name you can come up with, other than Berry and Dane Jackson, would have required opening the process. They would have had to deal with the open records laws, which has shown to prevent some coaches from applying. They would have had to wait for a minimum period of having the job listed as open. They would have had to had a formal interview process. As I said, it would take multiple weeks to go through the entire process. It would have been very similar to the process for hiring the UND football coach when Bubba got the job.
This isn't a big secret. Schlossman didn't have to ask the question, it has been discussed over and over again. North Dakota hiring is very different from Ohio State hiring. The same process applies for hiring an electrician, a University President, and a coach (although some of the timelines are slightly different). Faison couldn't just go pick Sandelin or anyone else. There was an effort during the last legislative session to limit the open records laws for some positions like coaches and top administrators at North Dakota colleges and universities. That effort failed. Hiring good quality assistants that can be promoted into head coaching positions as needed is the best way to work around those obstacles for places like UND and NDSU, that is what UND has done in this case.

Your information isn't completely accurate. Ames High School are the Little Cyclones. They don't use the exact same name as Iowa State. Not exactly the same as having a high school and college in the same town use the exact same name. Pretty easy to keep them straight that way. It seems to be important to them that they are the Little Cyclones, not just the Cyclones. Maybe someone should convince Red River they should be the Little Roughriders so UND can become the Roughriders.Ames High School Cyclones in Ames, Iowa, home of the Iowa State Cyclones.
Did I know that before I looked it up? Nope. Didn't care.
Most folks outside of Grand Forks County will be the same regarding Roughriders.

So did all the high schools and colleges around here named vikings have to change their names when the NFL Vikings came on the scene in 1961? Kindred residents and Valley City State alumni must have been furious. Somehow, someway theres no confusion among the NFL Vikings and other colleges and HSs with the same nickname.
I didn't realize that the Minnesota Vikings played any games in Kindred, ND or Valley City, ND. Those games must not get a lot of publicity. Or maybe the Minnesota Vikings headquarters is located in one of those North Dakota towns. Doesn't sound like much of a comparison, located hundreds of miles apart instead of 1.5 miles apart.

Rep Carlson has come back from Indianapolis with his tail between his legs once. He knows this is one to keep clear of because the statewide electorate has spoken.
He voted for the cooling off period extension, but it didn't sound like he put his full effort behind the bill.

Maybe I will write Rep Carlson to see if we can get a perpetual moratorium on the UND nickname. Or as another option, extend the cooling off period another 5-7 years.
An extension of the cooling off period was introduced during the legislative session that just ended. It was one of the early pieces of legislation that was proposed and voted on. It failed by a large margin, 62-21 with 11 abstaining. Even the legislature realized it was time to move on.

Anyone else see Dave St Peter's tweet about 15 minutes ago. Said, Go Twins, Go Green?? Is this a leading consideration or is he talking non UND name?
He was probably referring to a Pioneer Press story about Target Field switching from plastic cups, plates and utensils to ones that can be composted. As in Target Field going green.

You might be right but I remember a post a few years ago that said a Dean Blais or Hak team always has 15 forwards 8 defensman and 3 goalies. But now it is Brad Berry's team so we will have to wait and see.
Those are the normal numbers, but they aren't set. For example, in 2013-14 they had 14, 8 and 3 according to the roster from that year.

I would be willing to bet that the Lumberjack logo on tshirts outsell UND tshirts with the ND logo. The ND logo doesn't excite anyone, but I would also bet that there are people that really like that Lumberjack logo. And I have stuff with the ND logo, mainly just to keep supporting the school.
You're right about the WIU logo, that would help a lot.

If you Google roughrider, condoms don't come up until at least page 3 and only a few times in the first 10 pages. There are references to roughriders or rough riders in places from Long Island, to San Antonio, to Puyallup, WA. I don't think that condoms are going to be the first thing that MOST people are going to think of. I would bet that MOST people couldn't tell you that Rough Riders were even a name brand for condoms.
