  1. UND looked last night like a team that is in playoff mode.  I knew they would be capable of that early this year (because of the returning players), but after the BSU loss, I was wondering when they would get going.

Agree with the last post, Providence could easily have scored a couple more.  But, UND looked dominant overall.  Now, can they do that again?

  2. Isn't that how it always is over here?

Yes, but people want to vent their frustration after a loss, especially one like last Friday, and this is where they can do so.  As long as people aren't bashing others on the forum, then criticism of the team in which they are a stakeholder (love that word) is perfectly fine, IMO.

I thought last night's game was sloppy, with way too many turnovers and penalties.  But, the effort was good, as was the result.  UND needs to clean up its act, defensively.  Can't rely on Zane to bail them out all the time.

  3. the only upside to tonight was having a red pepper grinder and not having to wait in line at all for it.

For me, the only upside is that it can't get any worse.  Lay a giant egg to start the season against a mediocre team.  The future can only get better, right?

  4. What are your guy's thoughts on Chyzyk?  Maybe it's just me, but I thought he looked really quick tonight.  I'd like to see him in the lineup next week to see what he can do...

On the broadcast, they mentioned that Chyzk looked like his fitness/energy level was a step up from last year.  Bottom line, this team is very deep, with a number of weapons that have developed into better players now.

  5. My take on the game:

Surprises:  Murphy & Sanderson both had very good games.  Wouldn't be surprised to see them play Friday.

Freshmen:  N. Schmaltz is already at a high collegiate level.  Poganski seemed to struggle more, but its early.  Cam J. looked pretty good.  Poolman looks a little green, but will probably develop fast.

Defense:  Stecher is a gamer; seems to have upped his game again.  Should be in there every night.   Don't know what that means for Poolman & Ausmus & Panz.

Other:  OD was more noticeable than Mac or Parks, a little surprising for me.  Hope Mac didn't get hurt.

  6. If I'm not mistaken, the coaches get to play more than 20 players in these exhibition games, right?  If so, I look for all the freshies to get some playing time, as well as Soph goalie Hrynkiw.

    For the forwards, I'm thinking:

Gaguila-MacMillan-Parks       (just like last year - should be a dangerous line)

Schmaltz-Pattyn-Johnson       (see what Schmaltz can do for these other guys, who could both have big years)

OD-Gaarder-Poganski            (two seniors with a young power forward, could work)

Chyzk-St.Clair-Olson               (great grinding line, I would think)

Sanderson-Murphy-Simonson-Panzarella  (evaluate where these guys are in their development)

On defense, I'm guessing they keep Thompson & Stetcher together, and move LaDue up to play with Schmaltz.  Those four should play almost every game this year.  I don't know how you keep Poolman out, but Ausmus is also a guy you expect to see, so I'm thinking those guys might split weekends to start the season.

However they line up, the defense should be very good.  Looking forward to a year where the team hopefully does not struggle so much.

  7. Hak's latest comments from the fanfest interview indicate that he thinks this year's team can average 3.5 Goals, and that he expects all of the senior starters to have career years.  He also wants to use the way the team played at the end of last season as a measuring stick for the start of this season, given that we get back the core of the team.

No big surprises, but that is pretty much how I see things this year, too.  We have some good freshies, but this team will be defined by the returning defensive talent, Zane's play, and the senior forwards.

  8. I already signed up, and the site seems easy to navigate.  What I'm still confused about is whether UND's non-conference & exhibition home games will be viewable, or if that requires a second UND Insider membership.  I'm assuming the NCHC.TV broadcasts are limited to conference games.

  9. I like the look of this year's squad. A starting goalie, five starting dmen and 5/6 of the top 2 lines of a frozen four team last year. Not to mention a General leading the way.

All the seniors, the proven goaltender, the great freshman class, and the return of a great defense that will only be better because they were so young last year. I wouldn't be surprised to see a very confident team this time.
