  1. I just got an email from a friend from Buffalo who catches all of the Sabres games. I had to share the last part of his message here:

P.S. Stafford had a great game last night. He is really opening the eyes of the fans and media around here and becoming a big favorite. I heard an interview from him earlier in the year where he was praising his development at North Dakota. He fought the guy the cheap shotted Chris Drury a while back, and shortly after a big brawl erupted. Vanek was seen hiding under the bench.

I thought his last line about Vanek was hilarious.

  2. I agree, with the shot barrage. I posted elsewhere that I thought we were definitely trying to be too pretty. Clearly Chorney, Duncan and Toews can pick corners with the best of them. Bottom line, Sioux need to have offensive production out of the 2-4 lines. We need goals from those guys or else we will lose.

I thought the major reason we weren't getting shots on goal was not because we were being too pretty but because Minnesota did a great job of blocking shots and not letting them get to the goal. The didn't just block with their bodies but there were so many shots that they deflected into the netting or away from the goal with their sticks. That was the first time in many years I've seen a Minnesota team willing to lay it on the line.

Still I felt the huge number of penalties made for no flow in the game which helped Minnesota. It also seemed like the shots on goal were very inflated towards Minensota but I probably had my green glasses on.

  3. I have a hard time blaming Brian Lee for that goal. If you are going to do that, then you have to look at how the play started. Taylor Chorney made a good play getting the puck up ice, but in hindsight, probably should have gotten it in deep rather than dropping it to Watkins. Matt Watkins also had a chance to catch the pass and throw it in deep, but he had difficulty controlling the puck and it was intercepted.

The bottom line is that it was a fluke goal created by good hustle on the part of Blake Wheeler. There are lot of lessons to be learned by that goal, but its really not fair to blame any one player or really any of the players. Besides there really is nothing that can be done about it now. The Sioux need to refocus and get ready for a good Michigan team.

I was at the game and when Wheeler caught the puck off the boards I immediately jumped up and screamed "He's offside". It looked to me like he was in the zone by a good two feet by the time the puck got in the zone off the boards. Then of course he scores which made it even worse for me.

Did anyone else think it was offside?

  4. Even now the Pairwise sucks. We could be better off in the Pairwaise if we lost to Mankato this weekend and kept them as a TUC. If we sweep Mankato they probably drop out as a TUC and our Pairwise rating drops. Now that is plain stupid!

    We want Krach!

    We want Krach!

    We want Krach!

  5. To answer the question starting this thread:

Saturday March 3rd at St. Cloud:

North Dakota-1 Darcy Zajac (Ryan Martens, Robbie Bina) 3:12

North Dakota-2 T.J. Oshie (Robbie Bina, Jonathan Toews) 4:42

North Dakota-3 Chay Genoway (Brad Miller, Joe Finley) GWG 15:45

    Second Period

North Dakota-4 Darcy Zajac (Joe Finley) 3:07

North Dakota-5 Taylor Chorney (Brian Lee, Jonathan Toews) PPG 10:17

    Third Period

North Dakota-6 Brad Miller (Chris Porter, Chris VandeVelde) 10:42

North Dakota-7 Ryan Martens (Kyle Radke, Joe Finley) PPG 18:10

So we have Zajac, Genoway, Miller, and Martens scoring tonight. COOL!

I guess the other guys can score.

  6. Dohhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

I had more points than everyone else in Fantasy Hockey, and I still couldn't make the playoffs. I'm such a loser. I got Panzered.

Not true man. I had 469 points as Rip His Face Off. The next closest was 464. I didn't change my team one week when I was on a cruise and it cost me the playoffs. Man am I an idiot.

Thanks AZSioux for running the league it was a lot of fun. Now if you could only win without picking Gopher players it would be great.

  7. Before January 1 I said we needed to do the following to make the NCAAs:

    Split at CC (we did)

Sweep UAA (we took 3 points)

    Sweep Bemidji (we did)

    Split at Minensota (we swept)

    Sweep Mankato

    Sweep Duluth

    Split at Denver

    Split at SCSU

What we need to finish in 3rd place in the WCHA from the other teams is this and it very possible in my mind:

This week: St. Cloud and CC split , Denver splits at Tech and we sweep: St. Cloud has 28 points, Denver has 28, CC has 27 and we have 24.

Next week: Minnesota sweeps CC, St Cloud splits at Wisconsin and we sweep: We are now tied for third place with Denver with 28 points.

The next week: We split with Denver, Minnesota sweeps St. Cloud, CC splits at Mankato. Denver, St. Cloud, and us are tied for second ahead of CC by one point.

Last weekend: We split with St. Cloud, Denver and CC split. Three way tie for second place. We move ahead of St Cloud because of our 2-1-1 record against them. Then who knows about us and Denver.

Hey it could happen. We could finish second. But you have to root for the Gopehrs the rest of the way :D

  8. It's not only that we have so many home games before Christmas but this year is not a good year for us at all. Right now the only team in the bottom half of the league that we "get" to play against twice is Mankato. Unless of course you count Wisconsin there. We play one series with Minnesota and Denver and they are both away.

In contrast Minnesota plays Tech twice, Mankato twice, and then they only play us and Denver once and both those series are in Minnesota.

Let's just say a sweep this weekend is a must when you look at the remaining schedule.

  9. Don't hear any negative vibes from me!

Just towards certain aspects (like throwing individual players under the bus to resolve TEAM problems).

I want us to be competitive and make the post season. I love the Sioux and I will support the boys as long as they wear Sioux colors and even after they're gone!

I fully agree with these sentiments. The reality is that we are spoiled with the Sioux making the Frozen Four 4 of the last 7 years. As a Sioux fan my expectations are high every year and I expect to be a contender for the league and NCAA crown each year. When we don't perform to those expectations we all complain but as a true Sioux fan you contineu to support the team no matter what. We can right this ship by doing the little things better. Let's start with this weekend. Get your butt to the game and cheer louder than you did last weekend.

  10. This game once again showed that you can't constantly have one on one coverage on big fast receivers and hope to survive. Alexander was overmatched and had no help covering Fowler.

I had hoped that our defensive scheme would have take this into consideration but I saw no proof of that. It's tough to stop the other team if you can't get to the quarterback and you can't cover their receivers. That first quarter we would have been better in a dime defense than our customary defense. Or at least thrown something different at them occasionally to hopefuly confuse them.

The first quarter was not just that we couldn't stop them we also could not move the ball. With 15 yard punts compounding the problem I was worried that Grand Valley would get the ball on their own 20 yard line sooner or later.

Our team looked shellshocked as I was.

It just felt like we didn't represent ourselves well but at least we didn't mail it in and kept trying until the end.

  11. After watching this game I thought Hakstol should pull a Brooks and after everyone leaves bring the team out to skate. This team obviously doesn't yet know the meaning of intensity.

The goal was to improve on the Saturday night CC game and this team went backwards. The USA team may be talented but this is a game an elite college hockey program like UND is expected to dominate. They didn't. The defense didn't clear the puck, the forwards seldom helped on the defensive end, Lammy was screened twice by his own players, in general a poor performance that proved nothing except that they need to improve.

Right now you have elite players like Toews and Oshie that don't seem to be able to score while looking great in spurts, you have a goalie that looks susceptible to high shots because he goes down too early, and you have a defense that hasn't really matured from last year. I don't have a clue if this team will struggle to hit .500 or will find their way and be a title contender. Right now it's looking like the former.

  12. FIRE WDAZ GENERAL MANAGER BOB KERR.

The fact is WDAZ dropped the ball BIG time. They knew this game was going to happen.

"The NCAA was late approving it." Yeah so. You still work on setting the schedule and getting equipment ready while waiting for the approval, because you know it is going to come. And so when it comes you are ready. They have never rejected WDAZ in a situation like this. And guess what the approval came. Go figure. :silly:

    This is inexcusable. ???;)

*sitting in corner watching more young fans across the state support NDSU football due to their exposure*

Talk about a stupid comment. Is there any other TV station that covers UND? Let's fire all of the general managers. The reality is that this game was at risk because of the holiday. The NCAA made it tougher for any station to do the game by delaying it by 1-2 days. Now we the fan suffer. I guess I'll just have to listen to the game on KFGO and then drive to the hockey game from Fargo afterwards.

I'm hoping we win of course but also hoping USD beats Grand Valley!

    I'm tired of Grand Valley

  13. I just called WDAZ. They said they made a bid for the game to the NCAA. They were just informed today that they had the rights to broadcast the game. However to broadcast the game they need to know by Monday afternoon at the latest to make the necessary arrangements to broadcast an away game.

Net result is the NCAA didn't get back to them soon enough for them to arrange for a crew etc. to go to Omaha. I don't know what it takes to make the "necesssary arrangements" but I'll assume WDAZ tried to figure it out and because they knew so late they couldn't make it work.

No matter what the fan loses.

  14. Based upon how pathetic the team looked with Bellmore as QB last week Manke's injury scares me. The team doesn't look the same with Belmore and we need Manke healthy.

I guess we'll see this weekend if Belmore can begin to make better decisions and get over the downer end of year he had last year.

  15. Line combos:

    Defense:

    Lee and Jones

    Chorney and Finley

    Radke and Bina

    Genoway pushing everyone.

    Forwards:

    Toews centering Duncan and Porter

    Oshie centering Spirko and Kozek

Checking line is Kaip centering Fabian and Zajac

    Watkins centering Vandevelde and Miller

There are so many combos that we could do especially if Zajac scores like he did in the BCHL and Martens and Miller improve and if Watkins and Kozek increase their scoring. Porter could get pushed down to the checking line if that happens.

  16. Forwards:

    Seniors:

Chris Porter 7 goals, 16 assists in 46 games

Eric Fabian 6 goals, 11 assists in 37 games

    Juniors:

Rylan Kaip 3 goals, 5 assists in 42 games

Rastislav Spirko 11 goals, 20 assists in 39 games

    Sophomores:

Ryan Duncan 16 goals, 20 assists in 46 games

Andrew Kozek 7 goals, 6 assists in 46 games

Ryan Martens 0 goals, 0 assists in 2 games

Brad Miller 0 goals, 0 assists in 15 games

TJ Oshie 24 goals, 21 assists in 44 games

Jonathan Toews 22 goals, 17 assists in 42 games

Matt Watkins 5 goals, 4 assists in 46 games

    Freshmen:

Chris Vandevelde: He played for the Lincoln Stars in the USHL. Chris is 19 years old and is 6

  17. In a couple posts I'll throw my two cents in:

My take on the players who will be contributing next year for the Sioux starting in goal and defence:

I expect Stafford to sign with Buffalo. The only thing that may stand in the way is Buffalo is so cheap that they may try to get him after the Aug 15 deadline so they can sign him for a lower bonus and only for 2 years. At that point Stafford could elect to become a free agent and test the waters there. In either case I don
