  1. I think it is laudable that someone is taking a closer look at racism and discrimination in U.S. culture. All too often this becomes an issue of black and white, leaving out other minority groups (such as Native Americans). I do not think that a collective ban on Native American logos by the NCAA is a step towards ending racism in the United States. The real problem is socioeconomic boundaries and social problems such as poverty, alcoholism, and domestic abuse on reservations.

    It is unfortunate, but

  2. At an ever increasing rate of occurrence and volume, Native Americans have expressed their objection to the use of names, terms, imagery and mascots associated with athletics teams.

What I think is funny is that if they thought the number of objections was bad before, how could they expect it to be alleviated in this ruling? I compare it to an itch, that once you start scratching only gets worse. The biggest problem is that the NCAA totally underestimated the fury of the majority.

  3. People keep talking about what a new logo and name for UND should be. I read names like the Fighting Calvary or whatever. However, there is one name that I think would be awesome.

    The Dakotans

I know that it is repetitive to say the University of North Dakota Dakotans or North Dakota Dakotans (it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue), but we could get a mascot. He'd be a farmer of scandinavian descent with a pitchfork (or whatever farming utensil anyone could come up with, I don't care.)

The reason I suggest this name is obvious. Dakotans does not just refer to a native american tribal group, but also to the people living in North and South Dakota. I'd like the PC crowd try to get rid of this one since it has native american origin, but has been adopted by the settlers of North and South Dakota over the last 150+ years.

  4. Yeah, they almost always do this. I showed up in St. Cloud just in the off chance of getting in (I live nearby). Fortunately, the new stadium is ridiculous with seats only on the one side, so I watched from the fence. (Better seats than the people in the stands) The screwed up thing is that we were "requested" to leave to the north side of the field while they were having their protest where we wanted to watch the game. Obviously, I didn't pay to watch the game, but I had just as much right to stand there as they did.

I should have had a "Go Sioux" poster and stood there and seen if anybody noticed.
