  1. What began as almost too much of a build-up is only $25M from realizing its goal.... UND Foundation confident donors will meet $300 million goal

At the end of this fiscal year, the UND Foundation is $25 million short of their $300 million fundraising goal with 18 months left in their campaign.

Foundation leaders say that is plenty of time to reach the goal.

The campaign has raised just over $271 million since it began in fiscal year 2006, including $43 million in the past year. That number is expected be $275 million when tallied for the end of the fiscal year June 30.

UND Foundation CEO Tim O’Keefe is confident the goal will be met when they stop counting donations on Dec. 31, 2013.

“The dollar amount is quickly identified,” O’Keefe said. “But we are able to look through the dollars and see the individuals and experience the passion they feel for the state and university.”

O’Keefe said the foundation has averaged 13,500 donors per year during the campaign — up from about 8,500 donors before it kicked off in 2005.

  2. Midcontinent Communications acquires broadcasting rights of UND athletics

    For those in Fargo...

CableOne picked up UND’s full television schedule of 40 live events last year – events that were produced through the Fighting Sioux Sports Network.

Just as with FSSN, CableOne will now have the option of carrying the Midcontinent-produced UND content.

“I can’t see that (UND) would make any dramatic changes to prevent us from picking it up again, mostly for the benefit of the UND fan,” CableOne general manager Scott Geston said. “We will look at it like we do with everything else and make a determination after we get the paper work.”

Geston estimated CableOne will make a decision by late summer or early fall on whether they will pick up the television package.

  3. UND inks 5-year broadcast deal with Midcontinent

Midco Sports Network has announced that they will broadcast up to 45 live games, plus up to 40 weekly special shows featuring the University of North Dakota athletic program for the 2012-13 season.

"It is phenomenal to add such a great selection of UND games and special programming to our broadcast schedule," said Midcontinent Communication's Vice President of Business Solutions Mark Powell. "We know the UND fans will be happy to get a chance to catch all these games which includes hockey, football, volleyball, and basketball on Midco Sports Net."

Midco Sports Network will partner with the University of North Dakota to also include weekly shows featuring game analysis, interviews and reporting with several of the coaches of the University's athletic program.

  4. Which I think has something to do with the House of Windsor and the British Spitfire fighter plane during WW II. Anyone???

I just thought that it tied in nicely with UND's aviation department. Don't go all historical on me watchmaker. :p

  5. Have you guys thought of how hard it's going to be the AQ with 13 teams? You're not going to get 2 teams in for anything but FB.

You do realize that the 13 schools is football only. Other sports will be 11 schools.

Yes, it will be more difficult to win conference championships, but will be that much sweeter when UND wins them.

  6. One problem with moving Bball back into the hyslop and football back into Memorial is those are University (state) owned buildings. If I recall correctly, that means no booze.

Wait... I wasn't supposed to be drinking schnapps at football games at Memorial? ;)

  7. NDSU president dinged league’s commisioner in eval

It was January 2011 when Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple said it was University of North Dakota officials, not the league, who asked that retirement of the Fighting Sioux moniker be required for league membership.

Douple’s comment kicked up a dust-storm in an already stormy debate: Could UND officials themselves be crafting a narrative that would cause even ardent nickname supporters to abandon their cause?

UND President Robert Kelley adamantly denied Douple’s claim, and Douple never spoke about it again.

When asked this week about last summer’s evaluation of Douple, Bresciani said his criticism was driven by Douple publicly weighing in on the UND nickname matter.

“It was during the heated exchange with the UND logo and he (Douple) got involved,” Bresciani said. “I don’t see why he got involved. I was trying to protect UND a little bit.”

UND ultimately joined the Big Sky Conference, just a few days after declining a Summit invite for a site visit. Douple has also moved on from the UND-Summit tussle.

Asked about Bresciani’s review of a year ago, Douple said through an assistant: “No comment.”

Connecting some dots here, Douple claims he was the spokesperson for the league on the UND logo issue. So if Bresciani didn't see why Douple got involved, it kind of blows a hole in Douple's statement that UND was asking him to do it.

Douple is now commish of the Summit through 2017.

    Two words.... BIg Sky!!

  8. You didn't believe it the first 100 times it was explained by Archie Fool Bear, Eunice Davidson, Frank Black Cloud, etc...

Why should I waste my time explaining it to you again? It's over now, your side won. Congratulations, you succeeded in destroying a great tradition.

Dave, the tradition was destroyed the day the settlement was signed. Those who have accepted it, have done so on their own timetable. Very few of us are thrilled that it happened. I was glad when the "yes" vote won, but still mourned the loss of the name. I have been a Sioux fan since I can remember and even before that. I sat in the middle of the horseshoe of the old Field House and watched Phil Jackson play BB. I went to the old barn to watch hockey. I will miss the name, but the athletes will still be playing for the University of North Dakota, my favorite school.

  9. North Dakota State higher ed board OKs UND engineering name changes

The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education at its meeting Thursday approved name changes that will affect one of the University of North Dakota's oldest divisions:

The School of Engineering and Mines will become the College of Engineering and Mines.

The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering will become the School of Geology and Geological Engineeringas a component within the College of Engineering and Mines.....

...."Enrollment is reaching a record high of close to 1500 students, which represents more than 40 percent increase since 2008," said El Rewini, who joined UND that year. "We offer 24 degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels; three new degree programs were added in the last three years. Our annual research expenditure has doubled to more than $7 million in the last four years."

I knew there had been a growth in the engineering department, but had no idea that it had grown 40% since 2008.

  10. I can't believe this is coming from UMD. I would have thought something like this would come from an east coast or California school.

University sponsors campaign to undermine 'white privilege'

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do_w2V0-3D0

The University of Minnesota - Duluth (UMD) is now sponsoring an ad-campaign designed to achieve "racial justice" by raising awareness of "white privilege."

The project disseminates its message, that "society was setup for us [whites]" and as such is "unfair," through an aggressive campaign of online videos, billboards, and lectures. The ads feature a number of Caucasians confessing their guilt for the supposed "privilege" that comes along with their fair features.

  11. Sure. Just no bounty programs, okay?

Man, that story just won't end. It has been a long off season on the Gulf Coast.

(In my best Cliff Clavin voice) Little known fact... the Saints colors black and gold are due to oil being called "black gold". With all of the oil in ND, trot out a new name Saints with black and gold..... or not. ;)

  12. I know this would likely be very unpopular due to Minnesota connections and un-originality, but I think Fighting Saints has a nice ring to it.

Could we use the fleur de lis as my favorite NFL team does? :whistling:
