NDSU doesn't seem to have that many problems being successful for a school in North Dakota. But to each their own.

Also, I in fact very much have a clue of what happens on a day-to-day basis of running a basketball program. I have many years of experience in playing/coaching college basketball. Was very successful at that if I may add. So another false assumption on your part. Guaranteed more experience and more of a clue than you have on what it takes. Have a great rest of your day!

It appears as though we are cut from the same cloth then my friend.

I am all for having a conversation or debating a topic in this forum. But when you come in here calling everyone clowns and saying we are all utterly stupid because we aren't best friends with the coach and have different opinions on him than you, you lose all credibility and become irrelevant

We aren't even talking about just the game Saturday. We are talking about the last 3 and a half years that he has been at UND. What has he honestly done since being here that makes him deserving of a contract extension? Honest question.

Unless this season finishes very strong and we don't lose any of our top players AGAIN, I would say he hasn't done anything but be a below average coach, a below average recruiter, and turned this program into basically a Division 2 program. He has a .343 win percentage in his time at UND. His best season at UND is 15-18 in his first year with a roster of the previous head coaches players. Next year with his guys they go 9-17. Next year with even more of his guys and they go 6-25 and was one of the worst basketball teams in D1. That deserves a contract extension??

I would love to hear your unbiased case for what makes him a coach that deserves an extension.

I never said he deserves an extension. (Although, I think he will get one because Bill Chaves has shown he will stick with coaches) He has this year and next year on his contract. You guys are acting like he needs to be fired right now. They are 5-7 with two true road wins in the non-league with a couple of other good showings with a brand new core of the team. They are playing 3 true freshman major minutes, and two other guys that haven't played D-1 basketball before in Levias and Trent.

It took him 4 years at Black Hills State to get them to the Final 4, it took SEVEN years until his NSU team got to the National championship.

I realize that there are some fans that think this program should be able to immediately be a top mid-major program with a snap of the finger and a new coach... What everyone needs to realize is that UND is a TOUGH place to get it going, they have no recent success other than 1 year with Hooker and Crandall in the BSC. They are fairly new to a conference that has been DOMINATED by NDSU and SDSU. It is going to take UND a little bit to get to that level. And what I'm saying to you is that by firing Coach Sather is only to going to push back the timeline.

You are entitled to your opinion. I disagree with your opinion and believe you have no clue what happens on a day-to-day basis of running a program. Coach Sather is a good coach, and I will stand by that.

So because you are obviously related to Sather and will continuously have his back, it makes all of us "utter stupidity" and we know nothing about basketball. I really respect your efforts to have Sather's back but it is getting to the point that MANY fans are getting sick of it and think it may be time for a change. We will see how the year progresses and what happens at the end of the year. No one wants UND to lose or personally hope that Sather gets fired. But this is a part of being a coach and coaching at the college level. When you underperform and continuously cannot keep kids at your school then fans will begin to ask when a change will happen. Just the way it is you fruit.

I am not related to coach Sather or anyone else on staff.

They just lost to a WAC team that is in the  70's net ranking- should they have won? Yes they definitely had their chances. FT and TO's lost the game in the 2nd half. They are trending in the right direction.

Take a deep breath and go get a grinder at Red Pepper.

Sather just coached this team to a hard L. This team has potential and with a right coach would elevate this program back.

    You’re a clown.

Not going to lie, not a big fan of Sather and how it appears he wants his team’s structured. Seems like a nice guy but a lot of coaching philosophies I don’t like. Still think last year should be a fireable offense for making us watch that product on the floor. Still don’t understand how we had the least athletic roster in d1 basketball, yet had zero shooting. Made no sense.
This year we will be a 6-8 seed in the Summit. It’s all going to come down to who goes into the portal. Need to keep all the young guys and then get a drop-down player or two. From the little I’ve seen from the 3 high school kids we’ve signed so far, I am kinda worried about that class

    You’re a clown.

    4 hours ago, HoopsFan03 said:

I agree. But do we have anything else to go off of? It may not be all on Sather but since he took over at UND we have had nothing but players transferring out. We can only look at past data and the past data has shown that we will lose top players every single year.

You’re a clown also. Do you think it has anything to do with 1500 kids going into the portal every year right now? There’s your past data- college athletics isn’t the same as it was in 1980.

The utter stupidity on some of you people is laughable.

So what makes your "facts" so factual? You seem to act like you're so tapped in to what Sather does that I'm starting to question if you are his wife or something. If so, you probably shouldn't be on this forum. And that's fine, you don't have to believe me or what I have heard from players. We will keep seeing what Sather does for this program and we'll see how much longer he lasts. I can tell you all these 'rebuilding' years will begin to catch up to him. The fans are sick of it. We want to see this team improve and start being competitive again. I'm sure another D2 school would take him though.

I am not his wife. I know him and the staff quite well. I just like to come on here and let you know that you consistently don't know what you're talking about. But you should keep listening to JJ Redick on how to coach.

Last night, while not the result we wanted, was a step in the right direction. Jalun has found some spots where he can be aggressive, Brooks looks good. Rotation is still being worked out, I believe they are wanting some guys to take ownership of some roles.

Our 5's were outmatched last night against a guy that is a HM type player.

UND is improving and will be competitive in the league year. They are 5-6 in the non-league, I think at the beginning of the year, after last year, most fans would have taken a chance to be around .500 during the non-league.

    Relax.

Gosh you could go really deep into on how the coaching profession is changing and what is actually effective in coaching young adults. The screaming and yelling in players faces is old fashioned and has been proven to not be effective. Running players 'until they puke' is old fashioned and doesn't work. You can hold players accountable without belittling them and going on your "power trip". It is all about relationships and treating players with 'respect' I guess you could say. I would HIGHLY recommend listening to the JJ Reddick podcast where he has Tyron Lue on to talk about coaching. He is one of the top coaches in all of basketball and he gives great advice and insight on what works in today's basketball world. He really emphasizes that it is all about relationships, being honest with players all the time, and building up that trust with the players. He has a really good quote in there too where he says he never tells a player to change how they play the game of basketball. He tells them to play the game how they think allows them to play at their best and then it is up to him as a coach to figure out how to fit them into his system and put them in the right places to be successful. It is a really good podcast. Worth the listen for sure.

I don't see that happening from Sather. He doesn't allow guys to play free and figure out how to use their talents/skills effectively by putting them in the right spots. And to go off the stories, I have heard a lot that he still does the screaming and yelling at players. He does the running them excessively. (Just stating what I have heard from a few of his former players). Old fashioned ways that don't help players be better at basketball. Like I said, there is a lot more to it than I am able to portray in this forum. Listen to that podcast and it will be a great insight into what a great basketball coach does.

I can just tell you, based on facts, not on "stories" that this is 100% not true. Does he ever yell at guys? Ya, he's a coach, sometimes you need to raise your voice. Do guys ever run? Sure. Do they run until they puke? No. Does he ever go above and beyond either of those lines? No. Try again, fruit.

Trent did what many of us was calling for last night and actually was aggressive on the offensive side of the basketball.   He actually looked to score and he needs to do that more.   People have talked about his turnovers from ealier in the year. The reason for the turnovers?  It was because defenses figured out that Trent always looked to pass the ball first so they clogged the passing lanes knowing, he wont score.

Last night was a step in the right direction to fixing that issue.  I like that he took a few outside shots and hit a midrange shot, he needs to do more of that as well.

Loved Brooks last night and Omot as well.  His 3 point shot is getting better and so is his defense.  However, outside of those three (and some flashes from Norman and Sueker), tell me what everyone else did last night?

Yes the free throws were bad but I am here to tell everyone that is not the reason why UND lost last night.  Even if they made all of their free throws last night, they still lose.

3 point perimeter defense was awful last night and they gave up the most 3 pointers since the Pacific game in 10.  Too many open looks.  The last 10 minutes were a step back to the beginning of the year.  I can live with teams hitting contested 3 pointers, contested 2 pointers all night.  If a team can hit those shots... you tip their cap to them, nothing you can do about it. However, it was too many open looks last night.  Whether it was not closing out or not rotation over or getting lost on screens, this cannot happen.

With all of that said... there appears to be growing evidence that the Summit is going to be more wide open this year as the top teams have struggled to establish themselves and the bottom teams have shown improvement from last year.  There are going to be some very interesting results in the first couple of weeks of conference play.

I think UND can get back to that play they showed over the Thanksgiving Weekend.  However, it time for this staff to make some decision on a set rotation and run with it.

Me thinks that the rotation will get trimmed up here very shortly.

Does Sather really know what he is doing?? You always say this and "have his back" but it always seems to show that he does not know what he is doing. And what 'chances' does Trent even need? He is a captain of the team. I would think he is a captain for a reason. Maybe Sather needs to evaluate how he coaches and should allow him to play free and not pull him every single time he makes a mistake. You know, maybe let the starting PG and captain play free and have the ability to make a mistake without the fear of being taken out and sit on the bench for the next 12 minutes of the game just to watch Caleb Nero over dribble every single possession. Just a thought though!

I have heard stories and complaints from former players that Sather is in fact stuck in the old fashioned way of coaching. He needs to get with the times and start treating this like a D1 program or else it is going to continue to be a 'rebuilding year' for the rest of his contract. It's just the reality. Either get with the times or get left behind. It's not always just the players that need to look in the mirror when things aren't going great. The coach needs to as well.

Again, he missed several in the first half. Has nothing to do with being tired. Steph Curry is not a better late game free throw shooter than LeBron James because he is in better shape or ran more sprints in the off season.... you're stuck in the past dude and unfortunately i have heard stories from former players that make me believe this staff could be as well

I would love to hear these "stories." And please expound on "Old Fashioned." Just curious.

  9. NDSU did what UND should have done. They limited possessions and grinded it out. Sure Portland played bad, but NDSU did what NDSU usually does... play really slow, muck it up and have a chance at the end.

If UND continues to play Nero, Sueker, Eaglestaff a ton of minutes together, UND will not like what opposing teams do to them offensively. The path to success is to play Trent, Brooks, Norman, Omot, T, Brady, Mathews the majority of minutes and those other 3 can play 8-10 to provide a scoring pop. But they cannot be 20+ min guys. UND's personnel is built to play kind of an ugly style and try to win in the 60's. (see thanksgiving weekend)

did you watch the game?  i don't think i've seen that many bad bad inbounding throws since  i went to the ymca last week.....

    we could've won this game

Yes, I watched the game. Inbounds plays were not the reason why they lost the game... and it wouldn't have been the reason they won the game if it had gone differently.

If you think that this UND team, without any all conference players, picked 10th in the Summit league, is going to go on the road and beat the #23 team in the country, than I think you're probably never going to be happy watching UND basketball.

i think we could have actually won this game if....

    1. sather shortened his bench for this game

    2. sather had any clue how to run an in bounds play in the offensive zone

You're right, it's coach Sather's fault that they didn't beat the team that just got done beating the #1 team in the country. Bad coach.

  12. Interesting game last night and interesting dynamic to watch on this team going forward.

    1. PG position- to me the obvious choice is Trent, but man he does a lot of doy doy things offensively... Coach Sather also has a pretty quick hook on him right now.. but man can he change a game on the defensive end. Be more aggressive and score at the rim!!!

    2. It looks like we have a 3 man rotation setting up at the 5 spot. T, Brian, and Mitch. If Mitch could hit a 3 with any consistency this would be great.. Last night he should have been able to get wide open looks at the top of the key and spread out 5's, but he can't hit a shot right now. Brian is bringing great energy on the defensive end, but leaves a lot to be desired when he has the ball in his hands. T is showing improvement which is great to see.

    3. Rotation questions going forward are going to be interesting... who loses minutes???? If I had a vote, starters would be Trent, Norman, Omot, Levias, T- Bench would be Brian or Mitch at 5 depending on matchups, brooks, danielson, and eaglestaff..

I think he is dealing with effects from last years injury and he may get better or time is running out and he looses playing time which will be to bad for him and us.

I don't think it's a bad thing for the team. Can he score a bit? Yes, when matchups are in his favor. Can he guard and rebound? No. He's below average at both of those. Is he a good passer? Not really. Ajahni brings more to the team in all those areas, except for maybe scoring.

Really good weekend for UND basketball! 2 fun games to be at! Nero has played good the last two games in the scoring column. He tends to overdribble and stagnate the offense though. With Trent looking to be more aggressive they need to loosen the leash more and let him play free. The offense flows better when he's the PG. Moves the ball, makes good reads in the pick & roll, plays TOUGH defense.

They have a tough decision on what to do when Brooks comes back. The team seems to be rolling and gelling together. I would assume he would come off the bench and take a combination of Norman and Danielson's minutes?? I think we start to see Sueker not play at all. Levias fits the team better and is playing better. Not sure if school is too much/too much stress but he has not looked like himself at all. Overall, the team is playing really well going into two tough road games against Iowa State and Portland!

Great weekend for the Hawks. Hold teams under 60 is a good recipe. I agree that Nero had a good weekend. Didn't try to do much and passed the ball well, especially in Utah Tech game.

Ajahni had a great weekend...really happy for him. BJ continues to grow and T had a great game vs. CSF.

Hopefully they can get some things straightened out on offense as we move forward here because it gets really stagnant in stretches... but when you defend like they are right now, it doesn't really matter.

School is not too much for Mitch.. UND just finally has other guys around, to make minutes competitive. Ajahni, right now is better for the team than Mitch. If Mitch wants minutes he's going to have to play the 5, but if T and Brian continue to play well, than he needs to get comfortable with the bench.

Alright next time I will Google every single college basketball team and list every single one that plays less than 10 guys.... It was a quick example of top teams and how they don't play 10-12 guys in a first half like Sather has decided to do this year.

Do you think that had anything to do with getting beat by 20?? Do you think it had anything to do with it being the 3rd game of the season? Do you think it has anything to do with being a young team that needs guys to define/fill roles?

There isn't a coach in college basketball that "wants " to play 12 guys in a half. 8-9 guys will fill the majority of the minutes by the end of the year.

Is it frustrating to lose at home by 30? yes. Was it to a much improved WCC team? yes. Should we all overreact and jump off a cliff and fire the coach mid-season? no.

    Relax, pal.
