In all fairness, Hak couldn't win with Hak guys so it'd kind of unfair to ding Berry on that argument alone.

Hak made it to 7 frozen fours in 11 years. Hak's teams never missed the NCAA tourney, not once. Also during the 11 years at the helm no D-1 team won more games than we did. We have 1 NCAA win since our natty (although we probably would have won somewhere between 1-4 in 2020 that got cancelled). We rarely if ever got swept at home under Hak. I'm not a Berry hater, nor am I saying we should fire him. But Hak's track record for making and having success in the tourney was better. Keep in mind we had a few NCAA frozen four games where we were the much better team and lost because hockey is hockey.

Some of the games we've seen lately have included us getting fewer than 20 shots in regulation in 3 straight games. That's a problem. I still think we get better because we are too good on paper to not come along but the coaches need to make some huge changes.

How does Kleven get a major and Thomas gets a 2 min for boarding

I was at the game and thought the Thomas hit looked bad and worthy of review. I have (gopher fan) buddy who saw live from a different angle that thought the call was weak. Methinks I’m right but wondering if anyone has a replay so I have video evidence to plead my case.

I keep reminding myself that this weekend's results don't prove that we are or are not a legit national title contender. Nevertheless, I want to see us pummel the Gophers into pulp.

Let's play some Sioux hockey and show that last Saturday's game was an outlier.

Fully agree. Even if we get swept this weekend I won't be worried big picture. Getting swept on the road by a top team is not a pairwise crusher. Plus it will help us learn a lot about ourselves and will give us more information about how we should play in our own zone. I'm not so sure we will like the immediate results this weekend (but praying I'm wrong). But I think that once we get some consistency with forward lines and chemistry along with learning how to track the proper guys in our D zone, nobody is going to want to play us. Also guessing that DeRidder will soon be taking the throne and will start to gel well with the D corp and steal a game here and there for us. Either way I'm guessing Deridder plays both games this weekend to keep us in it.

  4. I thought Albrecht brought his A game Saturday night and it seems like he deserves to stay in the lineup until he screws up enough. I didn't think they would put Costantini as 4th line center but he played incredibly well as center so I am interested to see if he stays on a line with Albrecht due to their chemistry.

Also if anyone has a bowl of crow for me to eat, I was completely wrong about the Hain-Jammer-Senden line because I thought they would break it up and dang that line was just stellar all weekend. So let's keep them together (shame on me for feeling otherwise). But can we please put Blake on a line with Gaber and Keep #28 away from Gaber's line? It didn't work in the playoffs last year and hardly any offense was generated by that line on Saturday this past weekend. Gaber needs a change and they seemed destined to keep him with Schmaltz which is cool but the other wing should be a high-skill guy like Blake (or  maybe even James just to shake it up)?

Wondering what others' thoughts are regarding who you think should slot in with Gaber.

Solid weekend…showed we can have good depth scoring and our dcore is nasty. A bit concerned with the skill guys. They should have had more success against HC, especially with how our D looked.

Gaber had one shot on goal tonight. They’ve got to put someone else on that top line with Gaber and schmaltz. I’d love to see Blake there.

Costantini had a solid night on the faceoff dot tonight. Interested to see if he plays wing or center moving forward

Dylan St Cyr transferring makes sense (playing time squeezed by the younger all-star).   Maybe the same thing with Smilanic (more playing time on the top 6 / PP at Wisconsin than at QU)?

I still think Perets/QU defense is overrated.  In four games vs Western teams last season (UND, ASU, St Cloud, Michigan), his save percentage was .862 and GAA of 3.47.  Yeah, all those shutouts against teams in the bottom third of Pairwise pad the stats, but ...  I guess we shall see in two weeks if I'm right.

They dominated us in the shots department when we played out there last year. I think we will struggle to score on them next weekend but I’ll be happy if we split again since they will likely be a top-10 team all year

Guessing we see Kunz tomorrow for sure if he’s healthy. I like how this looks except I was really hoping they’d put one of the high end freshies with Gaber because there was just something off with his line last weekend. Surprised but not disappointed to see double freshmen on 2 lines. the coaches must have confidence in their defensive abilities against HC.

the D pairings seem perfect, really excited for this corps to gel as the season goes on.

The line that got scored on was Senden-Jammer-Ha..Judd......

    Come on coaches....Senden-Jammer-Hain.....

    Split the goalies.....SWEEP.

I know I’m a villain for saying this but I really think the only line that stays intact from this last weekend is the Senden-Jammer-Caulfield line. Yes they got scored on but they also had several grade A opportunities and created Kleven’s goal. It also seems like they want Hain in a scoring role this year, unless James ends up taking that on as a left winger for a top line (which seems very possible with his skill)

The other lines will get shuffled slightly, wondering if “top 6” is

    Hain Schmaltz Gaber

Costantini McLaughlin Blake (will need a top 4 D pairing on the ice for defensive safety haha)

Gaber’s chemistry on his line this Saturday wasn’t spectacular and he tried forcing it too much so they just need to make a slight change.

I’m wondering if the “4th” line will get alternated Friday and Saturday night because everyone was good enough to earn at least one night this coming weekend

    James Ness Portz (Friday)
Kunz Strinden Albrecht (Saturday). With James as extra skater for some power play time

But then again, we have so much forward depth that it’s going to take 3 months for any of this to shake out haha

DeRidder Friday and maybe we get hellsten in a bit Saturday, unless he’s not healthy enough. DeRidder is going to be the man this year but Hellsten needs to play since he is  the heir apparent for next year

  9. Has Chris Peters historically shown disrespect to UND hockey? I haven't noticed it but that doesn't always mean much. I might have a thing or two to say about Chris Dilks but I can't recall any shade getting thrown from Chris Peters. Also if anyone hasn't listened to the Talking Hockey Sense podcast where he had Schloss on I would highly recommend it.

I absolutely expect James and McLaughlin to be top 6/top 9 guys. Just strictly based on listening to Berry (and even Senden more recently) talk in a few interviews in preseason.

Mostly I just want them to try new combos in the top 6. For example, Gaber - Schmaltz- Caulfield was a line we saw a lot last year. I’d like to see something different.

I also am in the minority opinion that I’d like them to split up the Hain-Jammer-Senden line. They can always go back to it later, but I think we should experiment early on and see if something else works better and potentially put together a stronger 4th line that could produce more than they have recently.

    just my opinion though!

Fully agree on the desire the split the Jammer line. They all have tools that will work better on different lines. I also think we see jammer taking draws on power play and PK to get possession and then changing out for someone else like they would sometimes do with Pinto, weatherby, Ford since they were all great faceoff guys
