As I understand it, all winter sports will get a one-time (one-season) waiver on the scholarship limits, but only for a team's current seniors that choose to stay and play an additional year at the current school.  So for UND's women's team you have three seniors.  If any of them decide to come back and play an additional season, UND would be able to increase the number of scholarships by up to three. for only next season.

I watched the senior spotlight for your team at halfttime on Midco, and they were focusing on Fleecs and Reinke.  Both were saying they would miss the team, so I guess either they are choosing not to come back, or UND isn't going to pay for additional scholarships?  Also, what about Leet?

    You are absolutely correct!

    From https://www.ncsasports.org/coronavirus-sports/ncaa-eligibility-coronavirus:
"There are two factors that control the availability of scholarships at the D1 and D2 levels. The
NCAA scholarship limits per sport and whether or not the school is fully funded. For D1 fall sports, seniors who have scholarships and who will be using the extra year of eligibility will not count against the team’s scholarship limit for the 2021-22 season.

This does not mean a college will go over the limit of maximum scholarships. Each school will decide how many scholarships they can fund for each team depending on their budget. In a recent survey, 80% of college coaches said they do not plan on cutting scholarships as part of their budget cutting measures."
Also, wouldn't a returning 5th year's (Leet's) scholarship be guaranteed for the year, once offered, just like any other? Maybe no one has an answer because this is all new.

A better question will be which recruits will the new coach want to keep because he may access we may need different needs for this team. I believe this coming year is going to be very interesting year in that with additional year eligibility there may more players available to play than we ever saw before. The reasons for this their are going to be alot of grad transfer available because lot of schools because of financial reasons will not be able to carry these additional players or schools will keep their current players but not offer scholarship to recent high school graduates. My thinking is that if they keep players for this additional year and do it for one sport then they are going to have to do it for all their sports and when you add it up majority of schools will not have resources to do this. I may be wrong on this but this years decision is going separate number of schools for next several years because of who has financial resources to keep these additional players.

The number of scholarships for a team will not change. Still 15 scholarships for WBB.

I hope Mallory does apply, I think she deserves to be looked at.

‘I’ve been critical of her coaching decisions but we don’t know what goes on at practice or who was healthy enough to play.

don’t know what the players think of her.

so many ladies playing a position they weren’t supposed to.

‘I am impressed with Zander but she isn’t a point guard but she does  have the ball handling abilities.

‘if it’s a new coach what players will be gone?

And if it's a new coach which recruits that signed actually come?

Do we wait for a coach to grow into a position? Bernhard will probably be much better three years from now. Where could the team be three years from now with an experienced new coach next year? Nothing is for sure but I think we would be better switching now.

So many tough questions and conflicting views.

I forget who the coach was but I'm thinking John Cheney, had the following discussion at a coaching clinic:

Attendee: Coach, what do you use for a press break?

Coach: I give it to my point guard and have everyone else get out of the way.

A: What if that doesn't work?

    C: I get a better point guard.

That isn't a reflection on Reinke, who did a really good job for someone who really isn't a point guard.

Recruiting is the biggest part of the college basketball game. If the current Head Coach and staff can identify and then get the right players then the team will be better. It feels like the former coach got a little lazy and recruited a whole bunch of the same type of guard. You can't win with 8 identical guards.

Seems like from the get go the current staff was very aggressive in their search for players.

Bernhard i will give her credit that these girls play hard for her but our Philosophy on how were going to play the game is so predictable it hasn't changed even though the game has changed in last 5 years. Val Sussex color announcer for tv and former coach i thought basically outlined the problem for UND with her color comments durning the game in that they just believe if they rebound and pound it inside that will win the game. South Dakota which we match up the most in the Summit even showed that you can't win many games with that style of basketball. Today we had better shooting from the perimeter by Zander and Jarnot which finally opened up the game for our front line people. Today you need to have that outside shooting because of the three which more than offsets inside scoring and rebounding edge you may have if you don't have it and opens inside game enough that shooting percentages improve to start to offset the three point shot. The advent of three has made outside shooting guard most valued position to where it was before was big center that controlled the game from inside. That is why offensive scoring has gone up because coaches have figured out the percentages good shooting guards are like what we experienced with tall dominating centers for years.  I like  Reinke for her work ethic and she does play good defense but when i hear Val Sussex say she is invaluable to the team i just cringe because playing her at point guard like we have been is such deficit for us it one reason we have lost so many games this year.  She should have been coached for improvement in her shooting because i don't think it has improved since coming to North Dakota and i know this year she is playing with broken hand but look at the number for her on offense compared to your opponents. Today she scored 2 points 1-4 shooting 0-2 from 3 and 0-2 from free throws. Now compare her opponent Korngable she was 6-11, 3-5 for threes, and 1-3 for free throws for total of 16 points. Otherwise both were similar in other statistics but at point guard position we were down 14 points and we lost the game by 9 points.  I think if you look we have had severe deficit out our point guard position all year on scoring basis and yes we had several girls hurt but we have gotten one of our point guards back last couple of weeks but we have seen hardly any playing time increase for her who was recruited for offensive ability. These are things that i see why we have been close all year but value of scoring from point guard at has been undervalued here at UND for last 4 or 5 years.

I figure the most coach-controllable thing with the same players from a previous year/HC is the defensive effort and result you get game in and game out. Changing defensive philosophy takes time and they seem to be catching on.

They gave up 6 less ppg this year in Summit League compared to last year. In the regular season games last year v SDU they gave up 93 and 76 points in 46 and 28 point losses. This year they surrendered 72 and 64 and both games were battles.

I still think the pg that they brought in from Evansville is the piece that you are talking about that was missing. She would have been a huge help in the 3 ot games and the 5 others they lost by less than 10 (all in league play).

I feel like they are pretty close to being a contender. A few breaks this year and they'd be looking at a 3 v 6 or 4 v 5 game at the tourney. I want to see Bernhard bring in her own players. I wonder what the kids they recruited are like? Maybe she recruited players who can shoot it better? She did say that they had placed high priority on recruiting.  Will they even still come if she isn't here?

Maybe that should go on the recruiting thread?

Denver series is going to tell if UND has turned a corner for the program or if we return to what happened with 0 and 13 start. The game we won we saw better shooting from our guards than we had for all season on game one. The second game we started the game again shooting basketball quite well and we lead most of the first half. Then we came to second half and again we saw where we shot ball poorly and we lost our lead and lost the game. This is going to be big question now with Denver are we going to have better shooting or are we going to have what we had before with shooting percentages in 30's. I hope to see better production out Borowicz as she regains her form after such long time being injured. If she can start to handle point guard duties and start scoring as she is capable of we should see some improvement in UND.  We need to have sweep but i know that is asking alot for this team on the road. Definitely need a split or the season will basically be over for UND. If this team is have any chance at Sioux Falls we need to some how reach a 6 seed which i don't even know is even possible yet. Other wise we will draw one of the two South Dakota schools which i don't think we have any chance of beating especially when were playing in Sioux Falls.

They really seemed to know what shot they were looking for in that Friday win. Ladies were ready to shoot it on the kick out or the pass-pass whenever they got penetration. Passes were on time, on target. That's when you get people hitting shots!

Western Ill. looking at their team will be tough match up again for UND because we don't have the guards to match up with them. They have several smaller guards and couple of larger long guards of 5 10" and looking at their stats this team has four five people that can hit outside 3 so we are going to be challenged defensively with them. If they have poor night of shooting we would have a  good chance of beating them but they always when we played in past they have been very quick team and i see they also have one post player that has been scoring quite well even with poor shooting if they drive and dish to post still may be tough to get stops. Like all the games this year its going to come down to guard play if we are quick enough to defend and can find somebody to hit few open looks. I wish we could just see this team if it had couple of quick guards that could score both from outside and from driving you would not believe how good they could be with our front line of girls. I believe they would be challenging for conference title with the right coaching.

Sounds like former HC got lazy and lost interest and that theory seems to pan out with a lot of the same type of guards on the roster.
Not sure who brought Wallace in (given timing of transfer portal and Brew's dismissal sounds like Coach Bernhard did) but she seems to be one type of guard you mentioned that's missing. She would have made a big difference when she got settled in.

I figure you have to give a new HC a chance to put their stamp on a roster. Regardless if they were here before as an assistant or associate, recruiting is ultimately on the HC.

Western Illinois beat NDSU one game this year.  I think the Hawks are going to be lucky to win one this weekend.  They dont play Omaha until the last series of the year.  This could determine which team makes the tournament or not..

Hadn't seen that. They turned around the next day and lost by 30+ too. Have faith!

It needs to happen in the next two weeks or it won't happen at all.   I'm not convinced they win in Omaha.

Is Omaha a tough place to play? Even with half capacity fans? I'm assuming they will have half or less.
I feel like if the UND ladies get rolling a little we will see more consistent play which could equal a little win streak. 6 of the last 8 games on the schedule look like pretty even matchups.

Lane's sister is a walk on and will be another body in a year when they have been badly needed. Having said that, the article basically says she will be getting ready for next year so I'm not putting any unfair expectations on her.

I hear that if a scholarship spot had been available they would have brought in one of next year's scholarship guards but all 15 are given out. Covid didn't change the number of scholarships unfortunately.
Speaking of the Lane that is playing, Olivia was really good last weekend. She's developing very nicely it seems.

I don't think so and if we do go it will be as number 8 seed meaning one and done faced up against either of the South Dakota schools. Like i said this in previous posts its like we just wrote off this season and they will address what they are going to do next year. Sad part is it wasted number of girls eligibility and effort plus how program is perceived by potential recruits and by the fans of UND. Und women's sports have fallen on hard times since budget cuts we lost Hockey team, and our highly regarded volley and basketball programs are not at the levels they were 5 years ago.

Nobody loses a year of eligibility this year.
Pretty sure if they had any scholarships available they would have brought someone in at Christmas, provided it was someone who could help. The scholarship cap is still 15 despite covid. You can't just tell someone that they no longer have a scholarship mid season. In order to recruit successfully in the future you have to regain that reputation for treating players well.

Bernhard got out coached today she played right into KC  hands playing her starting 5 all the way for the game. When your up by 12 to 15  points  should have played her bench some resting her players. KC basically worked at wearing them down as game went along. ...

...This is not all on Bernhard but to sell yourself you need to start showing improvement in the program  some this just communicating to the public. The AD office should have been here also helping but I get feeling with this AD has fallen in love with Hockey that is what is sold to the public but not all people live and breath hockey. Und was once basketball powerhouse in upper midwest especially in women's basketball.

Some players have showed marked improvement, especially defensively. I think they are the ones who are getting the bulk of the minutes. If you have players left over from previous HC that weren't players the current HC would have brought in, because of being less skilled, less athletic or having a lower bball iq, playing them becomes very difficult. If you have a chance to ride 6 players and get a win right now you pretty much have to do it.

I get what you are saying and squeezing those extra seconds out of the bench is like walking a fine line. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't feel she got outcoached so much as she had trouble with lack of depth of talent.

I did see a post somewhere that they got it up and running midway through the second half. I guess I had quit trying by then.

I had the link working in the 2nd quarter at some point.

On the women's side, Olson committed to Brew in July of last year.  I do not know if that offer was still out there or if she decided to play elsewhere.  Her sister recently transferred from SMU to NDSU.  Lane was a PWO so that may be why she wasn't announced.  I expected VanderWal to be announced.  Not sure what is happening there.

I also don't know about Grant on the guy's side but we may have decided to keep that scholarship open.
