  1. Don't know about the hire. Think that Northern State can kind of recruit itself. If you want to play hoops and play in front of sold out crowds every night then there is your spot. Hopefully he is able to recruit some athletes that can get it done in the Summit League. Chaves went off script for the hire, interesting take that we got a guy who hasn't been around the D1 level in 15 years, or has had any D1 transfers (2 since he took over at NSU), also not many jc players on the rosters. Good luck winning in this league without some of those. I wonder if everyone around the area is as fired up about the hire as much as sather was against Augie a couple of years ago.
  2. Agreed, not good timing at all. A lot of people need to understand that this is a completely different place to recruit to. If we go and hire one of these D2 head coaches then we are basically starting over again. I think we need to seriously look at did they recruiting Summit League all-conference talent, did the players go and play professionally? I feel like we are missing the simple fact that many of these D2 current head coaches we are looking at are at programs that have traditionally been very good. Did they really build the program from the bottom up? Also, i have been following the NSIC and MIAA for some years now, and as of late the last 3-4 years the leagues have been very very top heavy IMO.
  3. IMO that's really tough. 1. We're not Duke. 2. It's not 1980. 3. There are less than 20 coaches under the age of 35 in d1 basketball. 4. Coach K had a great run when his team had "natural born leaders" 5. Does Coach K really coach Duke now? I feel like when his team is up 10-15 pts. you see him "get into his guys" but when the game is close does he really "Coach" I would like to see what his record is when the game is 5pts. or less...not taking anything away from arguably one of the greatest coaches of all time but i think that he has most often won because of the talent that he has at Duke at the end of the day we aren't getting that talent at UND. 6. If you look at the last couple of years in the NCAA tournament DUKE has gotten bounced fairly early due to the fact that they havent run any offense other than get the ball to the best players and get out of the way. We need to be able to get the best talent possible...whether it be HS kids (4 year guys) or D1 transfers/juco talent (2+ years). The hire needs to have a grasp on those! IMO it needs to be someone that knows the league, that has been in the league, and someone that can recruit the league.
  4. I would like to have a proven winning head coach. Just sayin
  5. Sounds like you have the inside scoop on this one then this should be an interesting one that has played out? Have Walthall or Boschee ever been employed by the university?
  6. To piggy back this post, I did a little research and those games that are in bold (The two coaches Sather and Walthall were 2-2 against each other those years). Not to mention if you look back in the archives they had won 9, 8, and 7 games the previous 3 years. I see that their current AD is Dale Lennon longtime football coach at UND, and if I'm not mistaken the AD that hired Herbst was another former UND football coach Roger Thomas. That second year he was at UMary the team won something like 16 straight games if I counted correctly. Since his departure UMary has been 77-147 (.344). Against Northern St. 68-65 75-47 (not a misprint) Against MSU-Moorhead 72-57 73-66 70-65
  7. I was actually referring to the first two seasons where he actually had one of the better LM teams in the country. He did a very good job not taking anything away from him, so I stand corrected. I guess I'm trying to understand the reason why you would hire him after back to back 14-17 seasons at a job where they can "buy" teams to come and play. His record within the league was not very good...the furthest that he made it in the MAC tournament was the semifinals as well.
  8. Good strength and conditioning program, very doable for someone that has played basketball, think there is more upside than we think. Need to get him going ASAP and get him to campus.
  9. Good list, don't know if I am going across enemy lines and hiring Saul Phillips he got fired at Ohio (John Groce won there and ended up at Illinois) SP won at NDSU (was a great run not taking anything away from it) but they were players left behind by Tim Miles...as I said before in a previous post POWER 5 assistants without head coaching experience (Jon Harris-SIUE ) didn't have many if any winning seasons. Just don't want to see UND fall into the same boat as them hiring someone such as Ben Johnson who has had zero head coaching experience prior. I'd like to hire someone who has had head coaching experience who has been successful at either the D1 or D2 level in the last 8-10 years. Don't think that hiring a current NSIC head coach is the answer either, hiring a coach that has been in the league is very crucial for regional recruiting purposes. Would love to have a coach that has had experience getting to the "Big Dance"!!!!!
  10. You're not wrong he may deserve a look, but do you think that the guys he was getting at one time are now not good enough to compete night in and night out in the NSIC? I think that night in and night out in the Summit League it will be difficult to compete if he continued to recruit similar players. Think that UND is a place that you need to have the ability to recruit JC and hit the D1 transfer list hard, possibly get fortunate on a player or two.
  11. Does Ahelegbe have any head coaching experience? That didn't work out too well for someone like Jon Harris at SIUE....Chad Walthall had some very good years at Moorhead, but has begun to lose games as of late after the Elite Eight runs...Jeff Horner has been a head coach at Truman for one year and took a NCAA tournament team the year prior with 1 senior & 2 others to a 14-15 record the following year that had quite a few returning...There were a lot of new hires within the league that is arguably one of the top 3 D2 Conferences in the country....Hard for me to believe that Dean Oliver would apply for the job since in later posts $$$ could potentially be an issue...Ryan Moody has done great things at Benedictine, but its hard to believe he is going to be able to go up against the big guns of the Summit League to recruit and get more talent than the likes of SDSU, USD, etc. I think we are forgetting to mention other well deserved candidates
