I hear ya. IMO that was not a quality loss regardless how it’s defined.  The  UNI game was a bad loss (cus it was a blowout vs a decent but not great team) vice being a quality (close) loss.

True however Western Illinois loses to NDSU 59-7 w/out Carson (UND lost 34-9 with Carson) and was the 5th team in from Valley because that quality loss was better then UND home lose to Idaho State or UND’s FBS win against Wyoming.

  2. Muss also would not try to offer anyone NDSU (thinking we cannot compete) would show interest. (Heard that from some area high school coaches at the time). Thus really throwing stuff out and hoping for a home run. (We had some, but also many more misses or no cohesive roster assembly) He was a good O coordinator but unfortunately did not have the best qualities as head coach.

  3. I felt this game would be tougher than it should because they know we struggle on the road and we gave up tons of plays to get ISU in position for a win. Bad team with confidence is dangerous.

Offensive line did great, though they were bad, looking forward to a full healthy backfield. Wideouts blocked and caught well. Offense need a clean game and make plays to silence their crowd.

Defense needed to make stops to break their will and unfortunately giving them 3rd and long and 4th and long we lose contain, bust coverage or penalties…. gave the belief. Really need to play with swag and not be hesitant. Best defense forgets the f-ups and looks forward in stopping the next set of plays and dominating the offense.

South Dakota was out gained and less than 200 yards of offense. That tells me out defense needs to find ways to get stops so our offense can get in rhythm and score some points and win time of possession.  Our defense will not hold them under 200 (I wish they could but we may not have the horses up front to do it ), but force a few turnovers would help with that.

Team has go in with the mentality they need the win and not think we have a home game to give us a playoff chance.

  4. We supplement it (the run) with short passes May times. However, if run is working let’s grind out a win.  Last game I could see why we used it (banged up backfield), however the oline at times struggled to get push last week. ISU Blue players and staff I think knew if we cannot run, we will use the bubbles/tunnels to make up for lack of run. The hogs need to get the run game going so we can get some play action passes. As others posted, if we can run our offense seems more comfortable and in rhythm.

  5. Yes this game is frustrating, I posted my thoughts earlier. DeBoer almost lost to 2-5 Arizona State team last week at home after Oregon win (pick 6 late won them the game) and tonight they are in a fight with 2-5 Stanford on the road.

Teams can have bad stretches, however I do see the argument that our current staff has had too many of these stretches.

Despite the frustration, I will support this team.

Next week we need to win or a loss would put the season on life support.

  6. Went from anemic play by this team, to seniors and older players making plays on offense and wanting to win.

The players could have folded and they did not. Defense we could not get pressure and that made the 4th quarter sucky. And Defense looked like not to lose mentality instead of you we messed up but we are going to kick your rear next time. 3rd down sack in OT was huge.

Fade in overtime official missed their defender grabbing Bo’s hand (that’s what it looked like) making it a one handed effort catch. Watching Tommy in the 4th reminded me of his play against YSU last year.

Hopefully our RB situation improves. Don’t know much about next opponent but our interior line need to get better push against 300lb tackles. As others say we may need to take more chances on intermediate or deeper routes to open up the run and bubble/tunnel screen game.

Lastly great seeing a clutch FG, these players showed the effort, now bring that energy and feed off each other and win next week.

  7. Here is my take about taking Tommy out. Maybe if he was takin out after the opening drive of the 3rd. Trey comes in and rally’s team to a win. Or maybe we lose.

Another is that Tommy would be p!ssed off and be more focused more resilient next time. Or the team rallies, saying we cannot let out QB down.

I don’t know the psyche of our players or what goes on in the locker room. Our coaches would know more about motivating them. Bottom line players have to believe and make their own energy on the road.

Focus one play at a time…..
Historical note, 1979 Monday Night Kenny throws pick 6 and Raiders down 35-14 in 3rd. Flores sends in Plunkett and Stabler waves him off and later says. I got us into this mess, and I’m going to get us out of it. 4 TD’s later Raiders win.

Is Bubbas best road win against then #5 Sam Houston who finished 6-5? 0 road wins against teams who made the playoffs? Do I have that straight?

I only went to last 25 for comparison so I did not include Sam Houston and yes no playoff teams. Most losses were FBS or teams with winning records.

The kicker certainly wasn’t the only reason UND lost 27-0 yesterday. Perhaps one of the reasons, but only one of many, many, many sad unfortunate reasons.

    I agree,

Just like NDSU week Offense-Defense-Special Teams-Preparation/coaching led them to victory, unfortunately, UNI week where the Offense-Defense-Special Teams-Preparation/coaching led to the defeat.

NDSU destroys Western, and UND gets destroyed by Northern. Coaches are responsible to have the team ready to go, with a game plan. UND was no where near prepared for this game. It was never competitive.

Tonight Washington is losing to Arizona State at home after a big win (and fans storming the field). Now how coaches have get the players to respond and make adjustments to win.

Being flat after a win happens but over several years we almost never recover to win after a poor start and that’s tough to stomach as a fan.

I think we all knew the game would be tough, but as I said before the game, didn’t matter if it was a 1 point game or a 40 point game, it just needed to be a win. Didn’t happen. Not even close.

The concept of a “good loss” is really only acceptable if you’re conditioned to losing. The culture of UND football supports this right now, despite the win last weekend. It’s a body of work over the past 15 years.

I never said or implied “good loss” , my point of not being upset is if this team played/coached their butts off and lost.  Disappointed yes, but not upset because of the effort and team was in position to win.

This game I felt was over after the fumble, there seemed no energy from players and coaches. If we are a playoff team that should not happen.

Man, we’ve been slowly conditioned to not care about winning football at UND. It sucks so bad.

Don’t get me wrong, I felt we should win, UNI was not going to be a pushover, however how we lost is unacceptable.

  13. Last year. We fought out butts off and made a game of it at Weber despite being outmatched. We beat a playoff caliber Youngstown last year on the road. I was expecting a win (though UNI would be fighting for their playoff lives) or at least a team coming out after a crappy half to make a game out of it. Instead we played flatter than we did at SIU last year.

Long story short is I’m not totally upset with the loss, but as a fan how we lost and appear to show no fight is the most disappointing.

  14. Special teams and turnovers made it a blowout. I also am not teasing my NDSU friends, if we play again it will be closer but I still like our chances if (win out no doubt) we play them at home.
