star2city
http://www.gazetteextra.com/shrinebowl_nolte071405.asp WHITEWATER -- Nick Nolte proved he was a true player, winning a team-wide Texas hold-'em poker tournament earlier this week. His coaches are gambling that Nolte and his offensive line mates can make position switches just as smoothly in time for their South squad to face the North in Saturday's annual Shrine Bowl all-star football game for graduated high school seniors. Nolte, a 6-2, 245-pound Janesville Parker standout, was a three-year starter on teams that compiled a 29-6 record, earning AP first-team all-state recognition twice as a guard. This week in practice at UW-Whitewater, South head coach Gary Larsen of Brodhead-Juda and his staff have asked Nolte to move to center, a change that's tougher than it looks to the average football fan. Nolte, a University of North Dakota recruit who is expected to play nose guard on defense for the Fighting Sioux, said this week's offensive switch has been a challenge, to say the least, but one he's more than willing to accept. "We've had a few problems with exchanges, so the coaches have been frustrated," Nolte said of the ball handling. "It's tough when you're used to just firing off the ball. "At first, I was too worried about getting the snap back that I was timid in getting off the ball,'' he said. "But it's getting easier."
