  1. As far as I'm concerned I hope we are unranked as long as possible. Who cares. Just keep winning and that stuff takes care of itself.

Also forgot to mention as it relates to the injuries.  Thought Jawon Johnson and the big boy from Hazen ND Austin  Cieslak played well. Couple of guys stepping up for injured guys. Cieslak is going to be a big time player after a few more years with Baukol. Only a Fr.

  2. I'm really concerned if Reyes and Rich are out awhile. I'm not worried about O'Brien in the middle but who is behind him and Ratelle... no one that has played to my knowledge. At Safety we'd be down to Johnson James and Olson.....very scary with some of the passing teams we have coming up. Can Harris moved to safety if needed, and then we can rotate  Carter Carter and Irvin Sills at CB? Harris might be the best option at S if Reyes is out long term.

Defense is a huge concern without those two and that's not even mentioning Iduwo Greely and Arnell. Reyes is the biggest by far, he cleans up so much stuff. Love James and Olson on special teams but they make me nervous vs. big sky WR for an extended period of time.

  3. Gutty win. Helluva call on 3rd down at the end. Team grew up today but the injury toll added up. Depth will be tested in the coming weeks. Homecoming next week, get to the alerus.

    4-1 baby!!!!

  4. I'm Roughriders all the way but I don't mind Fighting Hawks. No to the others. As it relates to logos I would encourage people not to vote for fighting Hawks based on that logo that's out there though. It 100% will not be the logo UND comes up with. Same goes with some of the logos that have been passed around for Roughriders or the other names.

Whatever logo UND will use has not even been mocked up yet. This is a vote on the nickname and while using mock up logos or logos from other teams gives us some ideas UNDs logo is not made yet.

People should vote based solely on the name and logo potential. If you vote fighting Hawks just because you like that logo you might be disappointed. Not saying fighting Hawks couldn't have a good logo just saying it won't be that one.

whatever your opinions are I encourage you to vote based on the name you like not any logo that has been floating around b/c those logos won't be what UND uses.

  5. This is just a guess but with the amount of apartments on the very west edge of campus, the ones north of the Alerus and the ones by Ray Rich I would guess more students live closer to the Alerus than old memorial. I also like all the hotels and the canad complex. They'll probably be more bars and restaurants around there in a few years too. Amount of space for parking and tailgating is way better than memorial.

People forget November games in the cold at memorial, I'll take tailgating all morning watching the game in a chair back seat with a beer in my hand while I look at a 2 million dollar jumbotron and then walking down the hall to playmakers for post game as my game days over any day at memorial.

Get more people in the seats, get more natural lighting, more UND tradition stuff, a few more bells and whistles and a long range plan to have seating to 15-20k if needed.

I'm all for a new stadium if we could get the money, but I think the Alerus is great when you think location parking, tailgating and overall amenities. It's not REA (which we are extremely spoiled with) but it's easily a top 15 FCS facility factoring everything in.

For the cost of a new stadium UND could do everything it needs to do to the Alerus and then turn the Betty into one of the nicest ball facilities in the region.

  6. I must get way more frustrated watching the game on TV.  I went to the game on Sat. and had a fun time.  I came away relatively pleased.  Having said that, I don't think the games against the top level Big Sky teams will be pretty.

My question is who are these top Big Sky teams that we can't play with? MSU and EW would be the 2 for me but we don't play EW and we have MSU at home so I think we might have a shot. I do think the Grizzlies and their passing attack could give UND troubles too. Other than that what game left on the schedule is a sure loss? My hope is we go 2-1 or 3-0 in our next 3 and we come into that MSU game 5-2 or 6-1 with a chance to make a huge statment.  I'm not saying we're the favorites in those games but I think UND will be in them with a chance to win.

  7. Only stat that matters to me is 3-1. I've said it before that UND needs to take it one game at a time, but they "only," need to go 4-4 in the next 8 and they are probably in the playoffs. Portland St game is so huge b/c I think UNC at home is about as sure a win as we have. Assuming that, we get PSU and suddenly you only need to go 2-4 in the other games. 1 game at a time but after 4 games were 3-1 and that has me excited.

  8.

I'm usually a fly on the wall here but thought I'd come out of the shadows to put in my thoughts.  DISCLAIMER I do not have a vote in this process and absolutely wish they could keep the Fighting Sioux moniker. Unfortunately, it's not going to happen and the process will go through as advertised and the nickname will be one of the five on the list. Here are my preferences if I had a say in the vote:

    1. Roughriders. Yes, a high school in town has this name. So what? This is about a national brand, pride, and marketing. The nickname is unique to the NCAA, has the best logo potential out of the candidates in my opinion, and represents the state of ND. ND is known as the Roughrider State and our highest annual award is the Roughrider Award. This is my favorite for all these reasons and would 100% be my vote if I had one.

    2. Fighting Hawks. I'd like it better if it lost the Fighting part. Hawks is safe, unimaginative, and the go-to name for any school required to change their name (thanks, NCAA). That being said, a great logo could make up for a boring name. People rally behind great logos and that's a huge reason why I think people are so passionate about losing the Fighting Sioux nickname. Fighting Hawks is still a distant 2nd due to lack of creativity.

    3. North Stars. This one could be 2b. I like the name. I like the logo possibilities. I like that it would be unique to the NCAA. I don't care that MN had a professional hockey team with the same name. I do care that MN is known as the North Star State, though. It just seems a little off that we would borrow another state's title. That's my only problem with it. That being said, I'd be okay with any of my top 3.

    4. Nodaks. Just no. I don't buy the "it's a derogatory name for people from ND" argument. Nevertheless, it's just not a good name. In fact, it's really bad. The phonetics of it alone seems to epitomize the 'hick' stereotype. It's also the worst possibility in terms of a logo. What the heck does a Nodak look like? How do you represent that with a good logo? This is just an awful option.

    5. Sundogs. Not only no... but hell no. Yes, it's unique. Unfortunately, the reason it's unique is because it's THAT bad. A weather phenomenon that essential looks like a rainbow around the sun when we hit sub-zero temperatures. Man, how did no one else snag that? The only nice thing I have to say about this finalist is that it's still a better nickname than Golden Gophers. Sundogs or Nodaks would be extremely disappointing.

Pretty close to my thoughts but I got 3 votes in the family and it'll be 3 for Roughriders. Could take fighting Hawks, but Roughriders because of the logo potential and all the state awareness that name has already like you mentioned. I actually saw a big decal on a some guys truck the other day on I94 that said. "North Dakota is Roughrider country."

north Stars is ok but I can't get past the Minnesota thing. Nodaks is almost as bad as Sundogs but not quite that bad. I know there is some history with that name but that's where it should stay. I expect we'll be voting again on Fighting Hawks and Roughriders after the first vote. Logo possibilities are good for a hawk but no matter what you'll have some form of a hawk. Not a bad thing at all but Roughriders could be anything from a horse, a soldier on a horse, to some cool image of TR. Great potential for a secondary logo with those too. I like all 3 of those options better than a Hawk when thinking logo potential. Roughriders has all the intangibles UND wants in a nickname. Roll Riders!!

  9. Tough loss In Fargo but we are still 2-1 and the real season starts this weekend. Big Sky is wide open. There is not a team left we can't beat and not a team left that can't' beat us. they can get to 3-1 with a win on Saturday and the easiest way to make people forget about NDSU is to go out make some noise in the conference and get into the playoffs. this team can go 5-3 in conference, but they could also go 3-5. Need to show up each week. Starts Saturday.

  10.  Not much more dangerous than a talented team with nothing to lose and everything to gain. As mentioned by myself and others UND is playing with house money, were either 2-1 or 3-0 after this game in non conference. There's been more talk of UND football this season than in years. In my mind this week and game has already been a win for UND. That said Bubba will have his team ready and they are capable of winning this game.

UND offense plays more like it did against Wyo. than Drake. Defense does its thing and forces a couple turnovers. Bubbaball goes to 3-0 and we march into Big Sky confident. We'll have the Bison back up to the Alerus in the playoffs for the rematch.

  11. Couple pieces on some kids UND is looking at.

6'2 210lbs Twins from Moorhead that run 4.5 40's. Multi sport athletes that could project real well at the next level. Moorhead has a really nice squad this year. Heard Jade Lawrence has looked good for UND so far, wondering if we'll go after a few more spuds this year. Mike Duginski is the other Moorhead kid that might be a D1 player. Moorhead could be talented enough to win the state title.

Article on Tyson Lytle from South. Mentions UND showing interest. Someone from South told me the young man likes UND a lot. Take that for what it's worth.

  12. I still see both Hartness brothers on the roster. This is 100% guess but I'm wondering if the staff asked them to come in when school starts once they lost a few kickers. I think they brought in two walk on kickers for depth midway through fall camp and you can only have so many kids in fall camp. Being the Hartness guys will redshirt anyways and a backup kickers are very important I could've seen that happening. Wondering if they won't be back at practice shortly along with other guys like Chad Bartosh (another nice ND addition). Again 100% guess. If they are still on the roster though it's a good chance they are still in the program.

i know nothing about them between the ears, but talent wise coming out of high school I think both would have a shot to play in a few years if they worked hard and follow the S&C program. Tristan at WR especially.

  13. Said awhile back it would be nice for UND to get out in front of this. Hats off to NDSU for  raising the bar for the rest of us. I'm against dropping sports but I was looking at the sports UND offered vs. NDSU and the difference besides hockey and wrestling is really m&w Swimming and Diving and m&w tennis. If those were cut would that make the difference? i love that UND offers 20 plus sports but I would rather be really good in 15-16 sports like NDSU than good, average and awful spread out in 20 plus sports. Hockey basketball football volleyball baseball soccer t&f softball golf & cross country. There is 15 sports UND can put money towards and see good return.

preferably UND could do this without cutting but if this situation played out and we could offer $6000 FCOA vs. NDSUs $3500 I would support it and so would my dollars.

  14. Wow, feel bad for the people who actually donated money to this. I'd ask for mine back. I guess you can blame the rain but the larp group had a bigger turnout in the same rain. That should tell you something there. Two supposed big rally's with a total of maybe 50 people at each combined. Let's move on to bigger and better things people.

While that was going on the football team was practicing in their new facility, they take on Wyoming in a few weeks, Potato Bowl after that, NDSU, Big Sky football, hockey season, basketball season the list goes on. Just a few things these "fans," could be putting their energy towards that would be better than this. Enough with the nickname garbage, time for Bubba ball to start.

  15. Agree with Ozzie on gameday atmosphere and other areas of the program that need funding. I was mostly speaking to the overall building when talking about the Alerus. Gameday atmosphere aside I think the facility is great. while the program still has a ways to go in certain areas i think the entire package that UND has as both a university and football program are very good. Having a coach like Bubba and a staff like they do only further enhances that.

I also agree phase 2 should be a major priority.

  16. What a fantastic job by the staff. Regardless of all the other stuff brought up I will just say this many kids committing this early tells me there is a great belief in Bubba, his staff, the program, the facilities, and the university by these young men. Good stuff for sure!

I really like the two Twin Cities kids and the two small school 6'6 kids Pinke and Mortel have a ton of potential and great frames. Pinke has a chance to be in the running for Mr. Basketball this year being that that award is usually a Sr. award. Would be kind of cool for Bubba to sign back to back Mr. Basketballs if he did win it.

I also agree with UND-FB-Fan on the Alerus. It's no Ralph but when talking FCS facilities it is pretty top notch. 12000 chair back seats, suites, beer sales, great locker rooms, new field turf, and some of the nicest video boards in all of FCS. Also being connected to the Canad and just the overal entire complex is rather impressive. The HPC and Alerus are a top 10-20 facility combo in FCS. Also correct me if I am wrong but I believe the current main locker room at memorial was renovated as a temporary solution until phase two is done, so I'm sure even that locker room is rather impressive. Phase two will put UND in pretty good company facility wise. Throw the other 6-7 new buildings going up around UND and the overall UND campus facility tours are pretty impressive to an 18 year old I'm sure.

  17. Scpa- I was just throwing it out there, and thought that would be fair to everyone. Do I think we should be just ND, no, but the only true way to get a fair vote on this would be to vote one name against not having a name right? Trust me I am very much in the time to move on camp, I was just throwing it out for discussion as I thought it was maybe a fair compromise. Reason I think you have to just vote no name against one new name is because the more extra names in the vote the more the other names split the vote.

  18. Here is an idea that seems fair to everyone imo. Why doesn't UND have a vote on the five names left to see what is the most popular. Then from there they have a vote between whatever name wins and just North Dakota/no nickname.

So if say Fighting Hawks win or Roughriders win we will put just that one name against no nickname/North Dakota. Seems fair to me.

  19. I have a question for everyone as it relates to this topic. Not trying to start any arguments, just looking for an honest answer from people. There are obviously two sides to this, people that don't want a nickname and people that do want a nickname. For arguments sake I know there are some that just like the name North Dakota but it's pretty obvious about 85% of the no nickname crowd is Sioux forever people. So we have Sioux forever vs a new nickname. What that new name is doesn't matter for my question.

My question is why should the portion of the fanbase/alums/students that want to move on have to wait 10-15 years so the other group of fans can properly mourn the Sioux name before we select a new one?

The other thing is the group of fans/alums wanting to move on MIGHT be bigger. Yes they may disagree on what the new name is but every poll I have seen tells me more fans want to move on with some kind of name. I'm not talking a specific name I am talking any name vs no nickname.

So, why should the "potential," majority have to wait for the "potential," minority to properly mourn the Sioux name before moving? Again not trying to start a big argument just curious what people's thoughts are?
