  1. Feeney is a stud- I'd put him #1 on our qb board if he was playing college football. I would take Adam Gieger and Zac Sweep from Century as well as give Bolinskie and Matt Marler a look from Minot. I think Gieger has played himself into a probable scholarship D1 player with his play this year. Tons of potential and good size at WR

  2. This next week will tell more.  EWU could lose their next 2 games and not make the playoffs.  @Montana and home against Portland.  Only team in so far is SUU.

SUU isn't even in. They only have 6 D1 wins. If they lose out they will not be in. They play PSU and NAU so them losing out isn't that far fetched.

  3. No team in the sky is in right now. Some can afford to lose a game but every team still alive needs to at least win one or win out to be in.

UNC is out as one of their wins is D2. They do not have a shot imo.

if suu PSU or EW lose out all 3 could be on the outside looking in. If UND Mont or NAU lose one they are likely out. UND is in a good spot if they win out b/c the other schools all play each other meaning there are guaranteed losses out there. Just win 2 and let it sort itself out.

  4. nearly everyone one that list plays each other the last two weeks.  UND needs to focus on themselves and win two.  They do that and they will be sitting ok after the next two weeks.

Agreed, while yesterday did not help UND at all they need to just win out and let everything else play out. When it comes to the end of the year UND jumps any 7 D1 win (8 win with one being D2) team without and FBS win. Only exception might be Montana as they kicked us pretty good in the head to head.

  5. Congrats to 2 future UND FB players. Evan Holm  and Bennett Helgren for being selected to Kare 11 All-Metro team. Watch the Video...

Randy Shaver picks his 2015 All-Metro defense team.

Alex Johnson from East Ridge looks like the prototypical UND tweener OLB/S type that would be really good coming off the edge in 2-3 years.

Looks like a really good pass rusher and is about the size Idowu and Disterhaupt were in high school.

  6. Saw Tom Miller mention a few locals as scholarship pwo potential guys UND is on. Think all have been brought up before.

    Ben Bolinskie - Minot

    Tyson Lytle - Fargo South

    Quinn Alo - Lamoure

    Zac Sweep - Century

not sure UND's interest but I do believe NDSU is on Michael Kelly from Oakes. He has size, plays nasty and is a really good wrestler. After seeing guys like Cieslak Grady and a bunch on the NDSU ol/dl contribute this year I am a big fan of us taking chances on ND linemen.

  7. Went against the hockey team's campaign and voted Roughriders.

if it hadn't been for that we'd probably just be voting for RR and FH and still should be. Voted RR again. Wish this was the last vote but no way any get 50%. Next week will hopefully be riders and Hawks which is what it should've been this week. That's when the vote could get interesting.

  8. I'm just like everyone else, but boy is it funny to watch the moods change. At 4-4 we were doom and gloom and we will never win another game again, now we are 5-4 and all of a sudden we're in the playoffs lol. Go UND!

I always thought this was a 6-7win season then thought maybe 8 or 9 after the 4-1 start but we blew that. Going into Saturday I thought we'd finish 6-5 going 2-1 in the last 3 losing to MSU.

With the win Saturday, an extra week to heel up, and 2 teams we match up well against I like our chances of getting to 7-4 and getting in the playoffs. I hope fans and students realize what is at stake for UND and help fill the Alerus against UNC. UND needs to get the word out to students and fans that playoffs are at stake here and a big crowd is needed to help. The game should be getting pumped any chance they get. The herald and wdaz should be pumping up what's at stake here. This is a big opportunity for the program.

  9. Craig Haley has us in the playoffs playing in Brookings in the first round with the winner going to ill St and Haley knows his stuff. Who's up for a road trip to Brookings?

great to be in the conversation for playoffs. Need to take care of business. Fun playing meaningful football in November.

  10. Paper said something like slash and bash or dash and smash. Nickname or not if both work hard, do what their coaches tell them and stay injury free have a chance to do some special things.

Kid coming in from Wisconsin looks really good too and we have Nevermann and Smith. Smith should move to WR or even safety as we need more playmakers there anyways and he is a special athlete too.

  11. I can't wait for nov 13! We have a good future UND football fans whether we make the playoffs or not . I also think studs has proved to us that he is the  go to QB . He made the passes when it counted. A 7-4 season with no playoff birth would only leave this team wanting more and next year they will be even better.

how about 7-4 with playoffs. let's get healthy and go 2-0 down the stretch. The more I look at it the more I think we are sitting good if we win out. S Utah might lose out, they have a weak resume for their record. We will have the 3rd or 4th best resume in the conference if we win out. PSU is a great win and we have an FBS win, plus no D2 wins. PSU smoked a 5-2 Wash St who is giving #8 Stanford all they can handle right now.

Committee will look at how we played without starting QB vs. with him.

Actually have a tough time seeing how we are not in if we win out, but we have to take care of business. UNC up first, then Poly. Raise your hand if you'd like the 4th quarters of ISU and Weber back.

  12. Jaxson Turner from Esko, MN picked up an offer today.  Guessing either at RB or LB.

Was hoping he was going to get an offer. Good iron range athlete and an area we have found a few good ones (Harris & Disterhaupt) the last few years. Could play many positions, hope we end up with him.

  13. Very fun game. Wow do we have a 1-2 punch in Santiago and Oliveira, and they complement each other well.

Great week to get healed up and get ready for the 2 biggest games UND has had in awhile. I think if we win out we are in assuming the Griz lose tonight and once more in their final three.

I think the Sky gets 4 in with EW S Utah and Port St. being the front runners unless the wheels fall off. If we win out our biggest threat is the griz but I think they lose at least one more if you look at their schedule which would mean they only get to 6 wins. NAU and Mont St are the others and we have a better resume than NAU and the head to head with MSU.

First let's win 2 more but of all the teams left that can get to 7 wins we will have a the best resume with a FBS win and a great win over PSU. Plus I think the committee would consider our losses without Studsrud and with Studsrud. Need to win 2 and for Montana to lose one. PSU winning out and winning the conference would also be a nice resume builder.

lets win 2 and get in the playoffs!!!!!

  14. Having voted for Nodaks I'm actually not pleased that the rules were changed to allow the choice on the ballot, but I think I can understand why.   Kelley's created a s-storm by changing the rules now, but he likely avoided another by a constituency that really wants Nodaks as the final choice.   Being the tally was quite close, I can see some logic in that decision.

That said, from my perspective this is decision only make it more likely Fighting Hawks ends up winning.    I suspect most Nodak and RR voter would vote for the other one, rather than Fighting Hawks.   So if Nodaks didn't make the cut, I'm guessing most of those votes would go to RR.  Hopefully enough to win the final vote.  Similarly, had the tables been turned and Nodaks was #2 and RR #3, I suspect RR voters would have voted for Nodaks.    I'd be happy to vote RR to keep Fighting Hawks from being the final selection.

Unfortunately now I am afraid that there will be voters cancelling each other out to the benefit of Fighting Hawks.

I also think Kelley is making a big mistake by not requiring the final selection to have 50% or more of the vote.  I don't care if that does extend the process, I'll be a lot more made if Fighting Hawks is chosen by 40% of voters while 60% wanted anything else.  To me that's not a good way to select a nickname and will lead to lingering bad feelings (yes, I know, any choice will).

This isn't that far fetched. I don't think it's out of the question to say FH is the top choice for Kelly and the consultants of the final 3. Nodaks was the favorite choice of the most visible group on campus in Brad Berry and the hockey team. Keeping it on keeps that group quiet and virtually ensures a FH win.

It doesn't take a genius to study those results and realize keeping 3 ensures a FH victory. Going with 2 leaves a big chance RR could win and we know how the consultants feel about that name.

  15. We need to demand the process that was defined be followed.

    Tell him.

    robert.kelley@und.edu

Pretty much the only way I don't see UND becoming the fighting Hawks. Assuming the 23% from the other names gets split up between the 3.

If you don't like fighting Hawks I suggest you email kelly and ask for the top 2 names. I realize Nodaks has a following but if he makes the switch it will be for the top 2.

Again I don't mind fighting Hawks but I much prefer Roughriders to it. If RR came in 3rd I'd say the same b/c that's the right thing to do, but I'd probably vote Hawks instead of Nodaks.

Should be 2 names and Riders all the way.

  16. The remaining 3 names are all acceptable.  I'm happy that Sundogs and Northstars have been laid to rest, and don't buy these conspiracy therories.  We need a name and new identity, that is the situation...we need to put this debate behind us and grow as an institution.  (Which has been said many times before I know, but it's true!)

    UND Roughriders

    UND Fighting Hawks

    UND Nodaks

It doesn't matter which one, we will get behind it and show the haters it doesn't matter what name we have, we will still kick your ass!!!

I can get behind this, still not big on Nodaks but could live with it, but here is the issue. By not going with the original plan and saying the top two names go to a final vote we could have a situation where a name gets 35% of the vote and wins.....Let me repeat that, A NAME WITH 35% OF THE VOTE COULD BE OUR NEW NAME.

Does Kelly or anyone else not see anything wrong with this??? Final vote should be 2 names which guarantees one will have 50% at least.

I fully agree with everything else you said but this has to only be 2 names to vote on. I would much rather have a vote where 60-75% is the winner not 35-40%

  17. That "fake logo" must be being floated around by the hockey only fans, right?

sorry, didn't mention anything about hockey fans (I'm a 10 plus year hockey ticket holder btw), just don't think people should  solely base a vote on a logo UND will never use. I say that as someone who doesn't mind fighting Hawks.

speaking of just hockey fans I do think the active campaigning by the hockey coach team and hockey beat writer did give Nodak an extra 10-15%. I think if they would've done the same for Roughriders or Fighting Hawks we'd probably have a new nickname. That's good to see that voters realize Nodak is a name we've had before and don't need again even with all the campaigning the last two weeks.

The  final vote should be between the top two FH and RR and UND should clear up that any logos floating around for either name will not be the logo used if chosen. UND will come up with their own.

Thats about as fair as it gets imo.

  18. Voted for RR and would be saying this no matter what. Final vote needs to be two names, end of discussion. Doubt we get any of the final 3 with 50% so we'll now have a nickname with maybe 40% of the vote??

Also if you voted for Fighting Hawks because of some mediocre logo UND will never use anyways you need to rethink your vote. I actually like Fighting Hawks but between that and it feeling like Kelly included 3 names to water down votes for it is making me  not want FH.

If it wins I like the name but winning because of a fake logo and a rigged vote doesn't seem right.

  19. I too love where the program is headed, but I am disappointed we are 4-4 and not 6-2 right now. I'll go out and say if we had Studsrud, Reyes, Arnell, Rich, and Greely against ISU (Studsrud for that full game) Weber and Montana we are sitting 6-2 right now not 4-4. We need more depth on the oline secondary and a few more playmakers at WR. Looks like we have a few studs in Santaigo and Oliveria to build around the next 3 years too. Bubba needs to continue to hit the Midwest and Canada to find these guys.

as for this year I'm not ready to give up. We get to 7 wins and I do think we are in the playoffs. Need to win out. If not we need to go 2-1 and at least end the year with momentum. It's huge for the offseason.

  20. Are we going after those twins from Moorhead? They seem like about exactly what we're looking for these days..

    .

6'2 200 lbs high school corners with 4.5 speed don't come in this area often. UND is one of many suitors I'm sure. Think they could be CB, S or even OLB in college. Be nice to get them and Duginski. Spuds win again tonight, onto state with a real chance at a state title this year.

  21. Big time missed opportunity today. Not only on the season but with fans students etc. We were up 31-15 late in the 3rd quarter and blew it. Not all is lost, but we need to sore up our pass d and pass o if we want to get back in this Big Sky race. Season is far from over but we need to be better than today.

  22. I attach Teddy to Rough Riders because it's part of the name's appeal to me. I understand some are leaning towards the more ambiguous someone who breaks horses definition.I prefer the military history.

I believe Roosevelt to have a more deep and meaningful connection to the state than some, notably Siouxphan27. I believe this to be philosophical, as we are discussing things that happened back in 1883 (Teddy's first time, a buffalo hunt,in North Dakota, which happens to coincide with the University's inception). I don't think Roosevelt would have possessed the skills necessary to be a successful commander in Cuba without his time in North Dakota, in fact, I would be highly critical of suggestion otherwise. North Dakota transformed him from a "young dude" to the barrel chested bastion of manliness many associate him with today. I don't think without the skills acquired in the badlands he would have or could have swayed McKinley to allow him to raise the regiment.

In addition to Roosevelt, there are others in the unit who spent time in North Dakota, notably Jesse Langdon. North Dakota was 9 years old as a state in 1898. Of course there wasn't going to be a ton of native North Dakotans in the unit. There weren't many to begin at all (the vast majority we can't use as a nickname). Some of the Roughriders Roosevelt had met ranching or hunting Dakota, while they never had a residence there. Siouxphan is correct in mentioning it was largely Southwesterners, as was McKinley's mandate was something like 2/3rds or 3/4th's of the volunteers were to be from the Southwestern territories.

To wax philosophic for a second here, as well, though I wish there was more representation from North Dakota for nickname purposes, I think there can be positive parallels drawn from the diversity of the group. Look at our recruiting maps (hockey's is somewhat of an exception lately). Look at how many different areas are colored in. The Roughriders had cow punchers and sheriffs from the untamed West; it had aristocratic born Ivy league-rs and athletes; it had Native Americans. It did a lot its fighting with the  10th Cavalry, an African American unit (Buffalo soldiers). It was diverse group coming to together to fight underneath one flag (largely the same as the state of North Dakota's) to push American to the forefront of the global community.  It is a hell of an example for our teams to follow, in my opinion.

The Roughriders weren't around long, no, and Theodore Roosevelt wasn't around very long in North Dakota either. That time spent, however short, had deep, meaningful impacts. A lot of the friends, and student athletes I met at UND, weren't in the state for any longer than their 4/5 years required, but the vast majority of them became better men and women for their time here. The imprint left on them, doesn't fade away, as it didn't for a 28 year old (ish) Roosevelt when he moved back to his original home. Many of the great things he did, are a direct result of abilities learned or honed in North Dakota. That might not be a bad aim for a university there in and of itself.

Well said. I'm fine with the name connected to TR or not. The name resonates in North Dakota much like the name Hoosier resonates in Indiana, Tar Heel resonates in North Carolina, and Sooner resonates in Oklahoma. Only one thing left to make it similar to those states. Make it the nickname of the flagship university of the state.

  23. With 6 games left we are 4-1. Here's my thoughts on what happens if we finish out in these scenarios. I'm ranking the percentages with the thought Reyes and Rich will be out too. If their healthy that increase our chances.

6-0 - one of the top seeds and host multiple games. Conference champs 5% chance

5-1 - chance for conference title, in playoffs. Good chance to host a game. 10% chance

4-2 - in playoffs still a good chance to host. 25%

3-3 - in playoffs on the road. Think our FBS win gets us in. A lot of other schools with 7 will prob have a D2 win. 40%

2-4- not in playoffs but a 6-5 season would be a step forward. 15%

I don't think we do any worse than 2-4 but still a chance. 5%

gotta take it one game at a time but it's nice to be thinking we have a chance at playing postseason in only Bubbas 2nd year.
