  1. I'm guessing we'll see a steady rotation of Tank, Woodsmall, and Greer (Noah Johnson or Austin Cieslak if Greer isn't ready).

I'm hearing good things about Tank, and also that Noah may be more of a 3rd down pass rush guy. Does that match what others are hearing or seeing?

  2. I talked to a guy today who has a relative on the Bison squad. Seems there's some real concern about the experience on the defense, and especially the talent level in the D backfield. That's not breaking news, I know, but because it came directly from an inside source it seemed to be worth repeating.

Let's hope they're still struggling to figure things out in Week 3.

  3. I think there is some family reason's involved down where he is from.  Tough decisions need to be made sometimes.  He played pretty well last year and would have again this year.

That's what I had heard a few days ago, as well. Can't blame a young man for choosing family over football.

  4. So these kids were not in other elite camps? Are the other schools just poor talent evaluators that they didn't offer these kids after seeing them in person? I just don't know why everybody thinks because Bubba thinks they are FCS players that they must be great gets. He hasn't proven anything yet.

First - every school has a different recruiting strategy. Some move early to try to lock up the guys they want or get some positive feelings from recruits and families for offering first. Others wait - to see if they can get kids that have FBS dreams that don't pan out. To suggest that a kid can't play because he doesn't have multiple offers is ludicrous.

Second - You couldn't be more wrong about Bubba. He has proven that he can eke out two more wins than the previous year. He has proven he can attract recruits better than his predecessor. He has proven that he can energize a fan base with his authentic style and positive momentum on the field.

Finally, you may want to see a doctor about your unhealthy obsession with UND and Coach Schweigert. It's getting tiresome for all of us.

  5. I know you guys would be happy with the win over NDSU because after all, that is all that counts with you guys, but we have bigger goals in mind.

I should hope so, on both counts.

With 4 straight rings beating UND should be expected. With all the hype it would be a fun game to win, but not a reason to dump Gatorade on the coach. For the same reason (4 straight rings), beating NDSU - at home - would be a huge win for this program given where it has recently been.

  6. Let's face it, the GF High School Roughriders might have a more potent offense than the UND Roughriders.

There we go again. I hit the "Vote this post up" button on your synopsis of how attempts at serious game-related posts go. it was original and mildly funny. A solid effort. Then you come back with this crack. I'll be more careful to prevent my tendency toward premature adulation from this point on.

  7. Any word on which freshmen will be in GF all summer? I saw that Mason Bennett will head to UND right after graduation, which is awesome. Hoping most freshman will do the same, particularly our running back recruits. The more experience and work they get in right away, the better off they will be this fall.

I ran into Carl Engwall's mother this morning. She said they met a few guys when they dropped Carl off in GF yesterday. Iwarri Smith, Jade Lawrence, Brad Heidlebaugh, Elijah Grady, Bryce Blair and Tyus Carter were the names she could remember.

  8. LkvlleUNDFan - what can you tell us about Anders Engwall? He must be Carl's younger brother, a junior-to-be QB from Lakeville North. Nice size - 6'4", 195.

He is Carl's brother and he's a solid QB. Had a good season as a sophomore and grew a ton this past year. Strong arm, makes good decisions and seems to have that calm approach you want from a QB.

He has a senior in front of him that has started for two years, but the coaches seem open to a competition from what I hear. Should be fun to watch.

  9. I'm heading to the MN All-Star game in St, Cloud on Saturday - looking forward to seeing Jade Lawrence, John Santiago and Carl Engwall on the field.

Here's Jade Lawrence, John Santiago, and Carl Engwall at yesterday's MFCA All-Star game in Minnesota. Santiago won the offensive MVP for the North squad. Lawrence had a number of nice runs, and Engwall got good pressure on the North QBs all day. Three good football players.UNDBoysAllStar.jpg

  10. Reaction to the final 7 here on the MN side of the river is a big fat, "Meh....is that all they've got?"

If I was running PadillaCRT - the firm that's "consulting" on the new name, I'd hate to have my name associated with this whole process.

I know names can grow on you - reaction to the "Timberwolves" and the "Wild" was far from unanimously positive, but this collection of mediocrity could have been generated by a middle school marketing class.  Any chance for an 11th hour admission that these all stink and a reboot with new committee members and advisers?

  11. Incoming freshman must pay (NCAA rule) to live with an upperclassman (dorms are not ready yet) and do not receive any aid for food.

I believe that's true only if they're not taking classes, right?

  12. I hope (and assume) that we are pursuing Amani Hooker, Quinton's younger brother. A junior, he is a highly regarding safety prospect at Park Center.

Per several sources, Amani Hooker has committed to Iowa.

  13. Any word on which freshmen will be in GF all summer? I saw that Mason Bennett will head to UND right after graduation, which is awesome. Hoping most freshman will do the same, particularly our running back recruits. The more experience and work they get in right away, the better off they will be this fall.

I ran into Carl Engwall at a grad party. He said he's headed up to GF on 7/5 and is rooming with Jade Lawrence for the month before camp starts in August.

  14. But, let's not make it too easy for kids to transfer because it will essentially turn into free agency.....in a way.  These are adults, signing a contract, and it should be difficult to drop school A and play for school B.  Do we want more guidance from the NCAA on this, or should players expect to honor a commitment or face pretty harsh consequences in some instances.  Just a thought -

I agree with Gundy to a point. Players should expect to abide by the NLI they sign, and it probably shouldn't be easy to back out of it - at any point.

    But:

    • If the institutions are only on the hook for scholarships one year at a time, why is the athlete expected to commit for the duration of their remaining college years?
    • Many of the athletes aren't legal adults at the time they sign the NLI. They can't yet vote, but we hold them to a binding agreement.
    • Coaches come and go, promises are made and broken, and playing situations change dramatically (see Neverman and Bohl) - and only one party in the agreement is held to their promise.

Like most complex things in life, there are no easy answers - but systems that don't balance the interests of all the parties tend to break down over time.

  15. Any more and they'll start chanting gopher rejects when we play ndsu

I'm not sure if he meant that it was a Gopher or just a guy from MN. But - if they can play and help us, I don't care who rejected them. Let the Bizooons chant whatever they want!
