  1. All it takes is for one person or school to complain to the NCAA about some fans wearing Fighting Sioux gear (which I will continue doing) to bring back the scrutiny and potentially bring back the sanctions. And there are still enough people at hockey games (home, away and at postseason tournaments) that wear the name and logo and voice their support for them to make this a potential pitfall in the future.

Sorry, thanks for playing, please play again.

Woe unto those who live in the 'wreckage of the future'.

  2. Was wondering how long it would take to expose Shaft/They appoint the same guy who was the prime supporter of Shirvani/would not be surprised if he suggested he  or Chapman to be the next President.

I see the selection committee does not include the CEO of the UND Alumni Assn. DeAnna Carlson Zink but includes Grant Shaft.  Shaft was suspended by the N. Dak. State Bar Assn. last year.  Google the summary of the disciplinary hearing. He also was primarily responsible for manipulating the selection process resulting in the selection of Shirvani as Chancellor of NDUS. Shirvani was not one of the original names to be considered.  Even a cursory google search revealed Shirvani's history of previous incompetence and turmoil with his previous employers.  Despite being advised by legal counsel that Shirvani was violating the open meeting laws, Shaft supported Shirvani and also redid Shirvani's contract in the midst of the controversy resulting in the $900,000 buyout rather than simply letting him go at the end of the year.  Carlson Zink represents the largest Alumni Assn. of all of the state institutions of higher education yet, was left off the committee  for a lawyer who admitted to wrongdoings at his hearing in front of the disciplinary committee of the state bar. This is why our state leaders, politicians and SBoHE lose credibility.  Anyone involved in choosing someone like Shirvani has no business being involved with this process.

  3. Wow.

The reason I don't want it even being left to vote is because nobody will ever let go of the Sioux nickname if a new one isn't chosen.  Then, we will continually hear stupid stuff about it forever.  And the NA office on campus will never shutup either.  Sick of hearing them tell everyone how hostile the campus is even after it getting voted the #1 campus in country for NA's.

I firmly believe that the issue and bickering/media grandstanding will never go away if a new name isn't chosen.  That is my opinion.

Eyerone is entitled to there option/even if it is wrong

  4. I think it's also important to point out that NCAA sanctions aren't necessarily designed to directly limit free speech.  Take the South Carolina sanction for example.  The NCAA has acknowledged the state is free to fly its flag, but if they do, South Carolina member institutions cannot host NCAA tournament events.

Much to my dismay I hear the cart coming down the hall/must be time to take my meds/if I may be so presumptuous may I suggest others may want to get back on theirs?

  5. The problem is that the NCAA is not a state actor or, ultimately, the government.  The first amendment and free speech laws are not necessarily going to apply to NCAA rules and procedures.

As I recall free speech does not include shouting 'fire in a crowded theater'.  (assuming there is no fire)  In the context we are addressing It does include using the dreaded "S" word at a sporting event.

  6. The fact that the NCAA has chosen not to use the settlement agreement to force UND to pick a name does not prove that we were wrong in believing that the NCAA could have made that choice. They found an easier way to get what they want. They have already stated that they will enforce sanctions if they believe fans using the name is a problem. This is a group that set up sanctions against every school in the state of South Carolina because there was a single confederate flag flown in a corner of the state capital grounds. They have the power and the will to create sanctions when, and for whatever they want. They have already given a broad idea of the reasons they will use. Giving them a reason to put UND back on sanctions, when they have already said that was an option for them, is pure foolishness.

It seems some believe there are no limits to what the NCAA or can not do/my guess is that any sanction based on 'freedom of speech', (which is what fans would be doing if they used the dreaded "S" word) would not pass the 'laugh test'.  Even the Attorney General couldn't lose that case.

  7. I can't honestly believe there are people willing leave any room for the NCAA to interpret anything. Especially when they have apparently said they'll drop the hammer if anyone complains.

Here is what you do know, the other schools who changed their names have not suffered as a result of any fan cheers/apparel.

Some of the people here need to answer the question, is trying to big time the NCAA worth hpotentially losing even one playoff game over?

If so, write a letter to your football team and tell them you are okay with potentially doing that to them.

Too old to keep living in 'the wreckage of the future'.

  8. Nope, have at it if it makes you feel better.

Nope, have at it if it makes you feel better.

A little background/Have been watching/supporting UND athletics for the past 60 years/hockey season ticket holder since the old Ralph was built.  Have never wore merchandise with Sioux on it/nor to I shout Sioux at the end of the national anthem of join in with 'Lets go Sioux.  Merely trying to bring some common sense to the issue.

  9. What does that have to do with what he was saying?  Yell whatever the hell you want to.

But in turn, the NCAA will do whatever the hell they want to also.  I know hockey fans don't care about that because the Ralph cannot host regionals anymore but other sports and their fans are getting sick of dealing with this crap.

Look at how much time we spend on these message boards talking about this when we could be discussing recruiting, facilities, upcoming season, whatever.

    Relax!

Let,s say, the new name is Sundogs/fans still wear Sioux merchandise and shout out Sioux.  Do we still get sanctions?

  10. My guess? Same as if the nickname hadn't changed (up to and including the NCAA sending their "best scheduling practices" recommendations out again to NCAA schools and conferences as they've done in the past).

What are the 'best scheduling practices'?  Regardless of what new name the team is given, does anyone on this blog believe that some 8,000 of the 11,000 fans at the hockey games are going to stop wearing  the Sioux merchandise or shouting out Sioux when their spirit calls them?

  11. Was at both Friday/Saturday games.

Both nights Hak sent the team out with his coaching philosophy/conservative and play not to lose.

Friday 8 minutes without shot on goal/Saturday 12 minutes without shot on goal.

Seems to me the line O'Donnell was on Friday night scored 2 of the 4 goals/surprised he changed that line for Saturdays game.

IMO the Sioux are a far better team than CC if they are allowed to play aggressive hockey.

  12. UND Lines:

    Pattyn Grimaldi Johnson

    Parks Caggiula MacMillan

    Gaarder Rodwell ODonnell

    Ausmus Chyzyk St Clair

    Simpson Schmaltz

    LaDue Mattson

    Stecher Thompson

    Clark

    Zane

Guess one poor game calls for whole sale changes??

Should quit the talk of not making changes/after all going 11-1 Hak took Caggs of the Rocco line/not sure how that worked.

  13. Stayed out of this terrible thread, but this comparison pmo every time I see it; pure BS. Woog's teams in the last few years played like they didn't give a crap, he lost their respect, and they didn't care enough themselves to play as a team. Whey don't you just go kick Hak out of his office and start motivating the team, or whatever else you feel like should be done.

Question? are coaches allowed to motivate the team?

    Just asking.

  14. Where have i ever been a Hak apologist? I guess just because i throw out some truth to the situation, you lump me in with your opinion of fans that are blind. Your constant spew on this topic is growing tired. You don't like the answers but yet you keep asking the same questions. 1. of course the coach shares responsibility but so do the CHL/NHL departures of players slated to be on the roster that have hurt this team. Systems aren't the problem with this team, it's the talent. #2. adjustments/systems are the reason multiple UNO guys were left by themselves out in front of the net or odd man rushes against? Did you call for Blais' head after the 2001-02 season? Because that team sucked. Or was it graduation, departures, recruiting lapse? 3. Curious as to who you think should be the next coach to lead this team. Give me 3 realistic names and why.

My memory not that good/seem to have read Blais had won a national championship not long before the 2001--02 season

  15. To your last comment/question...UND needs to capitalize on that next weekend.

I'm not saying anything about how this season is going/been attending Sioux hockey games for 60 years/enjoyed everyone of them.

Don't much care what Miami is doing/only suggesting what we saw last night and on too man other times may not be a player problem.
