  1. The dry heat must be taking a toll on you this weeked, Oxbow6. C'mon...Yale is the home of the country's oldest inter-collegiate ice hockey team with roots dating back to 1893 and has over 2,000 wins in program history. They may lack NCAA titles, but Yale does NOT lack tradition.

Yale = Tradition - maybe? Winning tradition - not so much. Really depends on what one means by tradition. I don't really view Yale as having tradition in hockey anywhere near like I do UCLA or Kentucky in basketball or Notre Dame or USC in football or Denver, Michigan, UND in hockey. Yale has been around a long time, won a lot of games in 121 years sure, but does that equal tradition - to some yes, to others not really.

  2. Having to root for the Badgers is perfect punishment for us being in this position in the first place. Only thing worse would be having to root for . . . you know.

yes and had those butt heads won last night instead of phoning it in, we would already be in the dance b/c Mass/Lowell looks like a sure winner over NH.

  3. I want to know what he's going to do differently going forward. I would love to hear his plan.

The system sucks. Not only is it not working, it isn't very fun to watch.

His system had great success with ELITE talent- play a system that avoids opportunities to screw up, then let the God given talents of Travis Zajac, Drew Stafford, TJ Oshie, Jonathan Toews, Matt Frattin, etc. score a couple goals.

You have to play fast and on your toes- FORWARD, not backward, not lateral, FORWARD with speed

This hits the nail on the head for me. The hockey has not been fun to watch and in fact very difficult to watch at times. Maybe the answer is simple - Hakstol should start recruiting the likes of Travis Zajac, Drew Stafford, TJ Oshie, Jonathan Toews, Matt Frattin,Danny Kristo, Ryan Duncan, Trupp, etc. again. Even if those guys lost, it was often crazy fun to watch them play.

Entertaining and losing is way better than boring and losing I guess.

    .

  4. I've been saying this all year. This team isn't that good. They just aren't. They lack scoring ability and have to rely on guys that in years past would have been fourth liners to score goals. Grimaldi is the only forward with a lot of elite skills but he can't get the puck in the net. There are too many people who treat the hockey team like the NDSUs football team is treated in Fargo. Not every player that laces em up for UND is automatically elite. A lot of people on here need to be real for once and realize that we need better forwards to do anything in march.

Agree completely with you & hrkac. I will be the first to admit that I am not a hugh hakstol fan but this teams shortcomings are mainly talent related in my opinion and not coaching. Lets face it, nothing against Pattyn, but he is a fourth line player at best on a really good team and not second line/power play guy like he is at UND. Luke Johnson is nice player and may become a really good player but he is not ready for a 1st/2nd line role.

TO me the real question is what happen to our top notch recruiting. So we lost a couple of players - so what, every elite program has. That goes with the territory. Losing an elite recruit here and there should not decimate you team of top level talent and in fact should factor in to one's recruiting plan. Miami has been hit hard by defections the last year or two yet they still have 3-4 top end offensive players on their team that we would kill for (to have just one) this year.

  5. Enough with the fire Hak talk. Sure he is responsible for getting these guys in a position to win. But why are so many people complaining about Hak and giving the players a pass. It is the players that are on the ice. It is the players that are skating on the ice, make the hits, make the passes, and score the goals. Hak doesn't fail to clear the puck on a power play which results in a goal. Hak didn't miss two wide open nets. Hak doesn't make bad passes which lead to goals. If they don't produce, like last night, why is it the coaches fault? We lost. I get it. We are all pissed. But there are more people to blame for the loss than Hak.

I think what many are talking about is that hakstol provides the structure and systems by which the team plays and don't like what he is having them do. However, you are absolutely correct in that the players must still perform and they have failed terribly on many occasions this season.

  6. The way we played tonight in all honesty we don't belong in the NCAA tourney. If we happen to somehow slip in I don't see us getting past the first game. This team just isn't that good this year and it certainly is a tough pill to swallow for us fans.

If we can get in anything can happen. Remember Yale - that was one mediocre team and they are the defending national champs. But we will have to be way better tomorrow to even win our game and then will still need help.

  7. Schmaltz is probably the only guy that could leave IF he wanted and I don't think he does. That being said, I think he could be great next year with the new class of talent. We don't really have any great offense. Johnson shows some promise, but we definitely need some new scoring to come in.

I personally think schmaltz has regressed the last 4-5 weeks. He was absolutely dominant there for a while, but has been just average and not near as noticeable lately.

  8. We shouldn't loose any players in the off season to the nhl because I don't think they'd want any of them after this years preformance

I don't think the issue is losing anyone because no one on this team is even AHL ready. The issue is can we add (or do we have) any high end offensive talent coming in. A lot to ask from incoming freshmen but we need scorers desperately!

  9. Has anyone found a scenario on CHN where we make the tournament? I tried and couldn't find any way we finish above 15 in the pairwise.

15 won,t do it. With miami or Denver guaranteed a spot, will have to be at worst #14 and even that might not be enough if there are any upsets tomorrow.

  10. Can you believe the two open nets parks and McMillan missed? Pure goal scorers (which we sorely need next year) never miss those kind of opportunities. I guess that is why many say this team is not very talented. Even starman commented on this teams surprising lack of high end talent. Why is that, I thought we were supposed to be a recruiting joggernaut.

  11. From an outsiders perspective Im very surprised he hasn't put up more points. Last year at Mariucci he may have been the best player on the ice for both teams all weekend, he impressed me a lot. His hands are sick.

I agree he has tremendous work ethic, skills, etc., and he hasn't been awful. I just can't figure out why he hasn't had more of a points impact. I don't know if its incompatible linemates, systems, bad luck or whatever, but, I did think his impact would have been more significant. Hope it starts this weekend.

  12. I hope everyone in every other conference underestimates us...I think we can surprise people.

    Solid d play

Zane has huge upside in net

Mac, Parks, and Jewels are effective and add a little razzle dazzle, speed, and net front and boards presence

    Grimaldi can explode

Pattyn, Gaarder, and Rodwell are just hard to play against

This is not the most talented Sioux team, but it might have a run in the tank

First off, I really really hope your right, because we could sure some consistent production from that line; but, what in the last 2+ years truely gives us any real reason to believe that Grimaldi is capable of exploding. We have all been saying that since he arrived at UND and we are still waiting. It's beginning to look like either the huge expections have weighed negatively on him or we just seriously over evaluated his possible impact. What do you think?

  13. Right it all comes down to that one game. :silly:

If you are going to base you comments on pairwise rankings - yes 1 game can have a hugh difference. My recollection from watching the last MN/Mich game and listening to the annoucers was that a Michigan win kept them in the 9-11 range and a loss dropped them to like 14-17. So if pairwise is your only argument it literally can all come down to one game. Don't believe me - ask Yale. They were 1 game (needing a positive result) from not even getting in the NCAA's last year.

  14.  No way you really believe that. UW has a shot at a #1 seed and they would've struggled to get home ice in the NCHC? Wow you and everyone else here has an inflated opinion about the NCHC. This year it was a bad conference.

How can you be so high on Wisco? Didn't they win like 4 road games total all year? And, I'm pretty sure 3 of those were against Penn State and Ohio State. If they had that same level of road success in the NCHC they would have been middle of the pack based on road losses alone. I'm pretty confident that you already acknowledged that every team (excluding CC) in the NCHC was a better team than Penn State. So again what is so special about a Wisco team that can't win anywhere but the Kohl center?

  15. I said records don't matter on a team that has a bad record, they can still beat a better team. My word!

I don't disagree with that. But my point remains the same - if UND can't win 2 games, playing at home, against a team with 6 wins all season, to continue its season, then they don't deserve to keep playing.

Had they done more during the course of the season, this weekend may not have mattered, but they didn't, so it does. So let's hope they can close the deal tomorrow and see what happens next weekend. Agreed?

  16. Easy pezy there big boy! What was their rankings? You can spin this all you want, the three victories that are done in the NCHC are all upsets. End of story. People can predict upsets, like the master Mafia Man did. But any way you slice it, it is still an upset! A team winning six games all year can beat a team with only 6 losses! So AGAIN CC with "6 wins all year" is still a tough team to beat. Oh and !!!!!

You said records don't mean anything, I just pointed out that Denver and W. Mich had better records - so maybe in Denver and W. Mich. case they did. You spin it your way, I spin it mine. End of story!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Haven't you learned anything from the other three NCHC games? Records don't matter this time of year!

And just FYI - b/4 this weekend Denver overall record was better than Neb-Omaha and W.Mich. overall record was better that Duluths - so you could argue that based on records favorites won both those series. Only upset was Miami and they were preseason #1 and Mafia picked them to win series so someone thought they would be pretty good.
