It's framed that it was for the gold against the Soviets. If they would have lost to Finland in the early game, it would have been a foot note in hockey history. Looking at how the medal round was played that game for the most part determined the Soviets might not win the gold. Also, even if everyone in the media said that wasn't the gold medal game most people wouldn't listen anyway. Plus, the feel-good narrative of capitalism vs communism would be ruined for some.

USA Hockey really never gives the 1960 team enough respect its all about the 1980 team.
