The fact we haven’t had another Blu Chippah commit since before the summer started, really grinds my gears.

could und play a school like tennessee?  or florida?

would a exhib against a sec school be "cooler" than the bisons of manitoba?

They could, but the CHS/AAU/NACHL D1 teams are like ACHA D2 or D3 teams. Going to be a blowout and not like playing a UNLV where they are getting Teir 2 players that could have gone NCAA D3 or been extra players at the NCAA D1 level.

I still haven't heard anything one CHL players to the ACHA yet. UNLV has one player that fits that category committed for next year.

  3. TSU official statement, looks like the NHL, Preds, and College Hockey Inc. had to step in and tell them to take their time and do it right.

    Quote

NASHVILLE — Tennessee State University announced today that the launch of its historic men's hockey program will shift to the 2026-27 season. The decision, made in collaboration with the National Hockey League (NHL), the Nashville Predators, and College Hockey Inc., underscores a shared commitment to building a sustainable and competitive program from day one.

The announcement coincides with a $250,000 grant from the NHL/ National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA) Industry Growth Fund and continued support from the Nashville Predators. TSU remains poised to become the first historically Black college or university (HBCU) to sponsor NCAA Division I men's ice hockey.

"Working closely with the NHL and the Predators, we agree that an additional year will provide the program with the time and resources it needs to launch at full strength and with long-term financial success in mind," said TSU Interim President Dwayne Tucker.

The extra preparation period will focus on recruiting, facility planning, staff development, and fundraising efforts. It also aligns with a broader vision to grow the sport of hockey in diverse communities.

"We continue to look forward to helping to make the Division I hockey dream a reality at Tennessee State," said Bill Wickett, Chief Marketing Officer of the Nashville Predators. "We applaud University leadership, led by interim President Tucker,  for its desire to ensure that when the Tigers step on the ice for the first time, they are doing it for a long time, and we pledge to walk hand-in-hand with that leadership in making it happen."

Wouldn't put it past Greg Sankey to get bored in the next few years and set himself a goal to get after his SEC schools to get hockey up and running. He'd find a way to capitalize on TV 10x better than the Big 10 leadership did if it ever happened.

Doesn't the B1G put most of the hockey games on B1G+

  5. I always wonder should UND finally move on from only "traditional" numbers. I like that UND is pretty much the only school that doesn't let players pick any number. But there are times I wonder if a McKenna type wouldn't come to UND because he can't have 72 as his jersey number. You are starting to see players not wearing "traditional" numbers. Just a thought.

Smith is giving any municipality in the state of Utah that wants it 500k to build a rink. Hopefully U of U and BYU are in his ear about D1 hockey.

Went to Kilby Block Party in May and there was a ton of Mammoth gear there and around town.  Obviously some of it is the new car smell but there's a serious buzz about hockey there, especially with the Winter Olympics pivoting to rotating between a handful of existing sites.

The plan is $10 million for 20 rinks at $500k per rink.

So, I was thinking could Utah, Weber, Utah State, BYU, and UVU get a cut of the $500k to help build a NCAA caliber arena? One of the interesting things I've heard is all the rinks in Utah are Olympic size because of the 2002 Olympic games. Utah is in the process to replace Jon M. Huntsman Center where I've seen suggested in a Utah State message board that they would make the arena able to have hockey to get some Olympics money. I guess it's going to be built by the Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Utah club team currently plays across the street from the football practice facilities. Weber State has a nice arena (Olympic curling venue) (2,000), Utah State has the George S. Eccles arena (2,000), and UVU plays at Peaks (2,500) but wouldn't be surprised they end up playing at the new Mammoth practice facility.

Utah, Colorado, Nevada, and Arizona will be interesting if they see how ASU is doing, and they make the jump. Still waiting to hear more on the new arena in Greeley.

  7. Since the Stanley Cup Final has involved Florida for the last 6 years with two back-to-back champions. I'd expect the NHL/NHLPA NCAA feasibility study has to have been offered to a couple schools in Florida.

FGCU would be the obvious choice; they play at Hertz Arena (7,181) and there use to be a holiday tournament there. UCF could play at Kia Center home of the Magic and Solar Bears seats 17,353 for hockey Solar Bears get around 6,500 so not bad at all. Florida State does own the Donald L. Tucker Arena (9,450 hockey) that a ECHL team, but there was a renovation in 2016. As far as I know the ice making equipment has been removed. Florida State along with Florida play in Jacksonville.

The 7 (big) club teams in Florida are competitive and need to all go back to the AHCA. I'd like to see a Florida team move up with Georgia, if they ever do, and FGCU would be the one I see doing it first.

A UCF series I came across.

  8. This again after McKenna commits.

So, let's look at where NCAA D1 could work in Illinois.

    Illinois State University:

To me Illinois State is the obvious choice. They have an arena in Bloomington that is perfect, Grossinger Moters Arena. Has a capacity of 7,000 and the ECHL team draws 2,600 to 2,800. The Illinois State ACHA team does play at Grossinger Motors Arena.

    Northwestern:

Allstate Arena, it's not close to Northwestern and the current home to the Chicago Wolves. Northwestern basketball did play there 2017-2018. A capacity of 16,692 for hockey with the Wolves averaging about 9,000 per game. Of the B1G schools this would be who has an arena ready outside Iowa.

    Roosevelt:

Roosevelt just moved their athletic department up to NCAA D2 and are not far from Fifth Third Arena. The Blackhawks are expanding Fifth Third Arena adding a 2,000 seat arena to the existing arena. The Chicago Steel are going to move in there once it is built. If they were to add hockey, they could play, there due to how close it is to the school. Roosevelt plays ACHA D1 at Edge Ice Arena (old Blackhawks practice arena) which seats 3,000 in Bensenville.

    Illinois-Chicago:

Would be nice to see former CCHA member to come back. Like with Roosevelt, Fifth Third Arena could be an option once it is completed.

Just checked their past schedules and they haven't played an NCHC or Hockey East school since... UND at Nashville back in 2021. They'll finally break that streak by playing at ASU this year to open the season.

They've been flying under the radar with still scheduling like they're an up and coming club team hahah was not aware of that.

They have been getting fat on those cupcakes since day one

I'd guess around 60ish. If he were in the NCHC I'd hammer the under on that total. The Big 10 being more up and down in pace will definitely help.

B1G plays little to no defense and goaltending has been suspect there for awhile

Like the move. Have to wonder if Schneekloth would have been promoted from the AHL to the Avs instead of going to Seattle

Just wanted to put this link up for those that want to watch the McKenna saga on ESPN tonight:

McKenna, projected No. 1 pick in 2026, to make college decision tonight on ESPN | NHL.com

I cannot get over what people are calling "generational" talents.  This kid is an extremely good hockey talent, but is not 6ft tall and under 165lbs.  Bedard is having his bumps and bruises in the National, which he needs others around him to help out.  I hope McKenna will gain a few pounds and I do believe the college hockey schedule will fit him very well.  Fewer games and an opportunity to weight train and build muscle.  People can argue his choice if it is Penn State, which is a pretty done deal.  I will say the Big Ten fits his style.  I doubt he would find it as easy in the NCHC.  I wish him well and we will see who ends up being the better get Verhoeff or McKenna.

Don’t tell me that Bucci is going to be on SportsCenter to do a one of those football commits with him grabbing a hat to put on (this would be a Bucci idea).

Yes, Schlossman especially can vouch for that after picking Western Michigan to finish 7th in the NCHC last year.

I had them top 3, not sure why he had them so low
