  1. First of all, I would like to wish Coach Glas the best of luck with his new job. Having worked with him over the past 12 years, I can honestly say I am not sure I have met a man with more integrity, passion for his players and staff and all around good natured person than coach Glas!!!! He made every player that played or him a better person, and aside from wins and losses, that is what this is all about....making these young men into adults so they can function in the real world, that is our job as a parent as well, which is why I have so much respect for Coach Glas!!! I have told him this, that I believe the true test of a coach is if you would feel comfortable with your own kids playing for a coach, and ten times out of ten....I would love for my kids to play for Coach Glas!!!

Most of you do not see the things coach does day in and day out to make every person on his team, staff etc better people everyday!!!

He is as Ben Jacboson said, a mentor, role model and one of the best people UND has ever had or will have in the future!! Along with Rob Bollinger!! UND in a week has lost two of the great people within our athletic dept...... I hope this send some signals to someone!!!!!

  2. While I agree with the majority of your points, the location of Winona is much more appealing to a hugely greater pool of athletes than Grand Forks. With Wisconsin right across the river (with no DII colleges, the Twin Cities 100 miles to the north, Iowa just to the south, not far from IL, etc., this is a much different situation than Grand Forks. I would guess that within 150 - 200 miles of Winona, there are 10 to 15 times the number of DII quality athletes available as compared to the same distance from GF!

  3. Interesting how some coaches feel that way also....interesting

As far as economics go....history has proven...not owning your own buildings...isnt a good long term proposition....

As far as coach Glas...that quote did not need to make the paper...about taking the program to a new level...all that needed to be said was...we have a coach....until we do not have a coach....we will address the issue.....that was not very classy to make that statement..

  4. There are some similaries in those scenarios, but there is one glaring difference. Holt's players did not endorse him as the person they hoped would get the job to the administration. Herbst's have already endorsed him to the administration.

Who asked for this endorsement...and how did this take place?? Holt definitely tried to gain their endorsement.... some similarities perhaps???

  5. It comes down to wins and losses. If Herbst is hired, all the rercruits do end up coming (should be a great class) and the team starts winning you will see more and more people in the stands. Or do you think if the team is 15-1 and rolling over teams people will file out of the arena saying "if only Craig Smith were coaching, then I'ld stay"

Or maybe you think that if Smith is hired, he loses many of the recruits for this season, but is 7-7, the gym will be packed and the kids will be holding "Craig Smith for President" signs at the games.

Herbst has put in his time with the program, maybe they had some tough times while he was here, but he also deserves a shot to run the team himself, using HIS plays, HIS styles, HIS decisions, HIS recruiting. He deserves a shot, whether it be a short contract to give the school options, he deserves a shot.

...don't ask where I've been, my computer had an extremely bad virus

Perhaps your computer should have stayed crashed!!!! So your saying....he has had no influence in the program in the last 5 years??? He does deserve a shot...but perhaps not the way he is going about it....

  6. The flip side is, we KNOW Smith can win as a head coach at a school where it is extremely difficult to win. His record there, albeit brief, speaks for itself. With Herbst, while it's possible he could be better than Rich was, it's a complete unknown. Herbst was moderately successful as a juco head coach, and he's been moderately successful (at best) as an assistant.

Using your own logic, how can you condem a assistant coach for their record??? Foolish argument!

  7. I haven't seen a basketball game in the Betty, but from what I hear it is just a more intimate place for basketball. I did see two games last year in REA in one of the suites and had a great time. I really didn't feel that the view was that bad even though I was in one of the corners.

How are the concession sales between basketball games in REA compared to the Betty? Being in a suite there is definitely more of an opportunity to spend money on food and drink.

I've seen the image that was posted moving the court to the north end. Wouldn't that put the scoreboard over one of the baskets?

Doesn't Wisconsin play all of their mens and womens basketball and hockey in the Kohl Center? I know that Wisconsin's basketball attendance is far greater than North Dakota's for the men, but I don't know how it is for the women. The greater attendance would obviously make it seem more of a homey place, as I have heard people complain about REA when it is a small crowd.

The Kohl Center was built for basketball. Having the seats that are always in the center come even to the floor when the boards are taken out for hockey. Which means when you watch hockey games in there you sort of look down at the guys next to the boards, but they built it this way because they knew they would use it for basketball as well as hockey.

  8. Refurbishing Hyslop is/was not an option. It was a interesting facility to watch basketball from, but the place has way too many issues. It's been remodelled so many times, that it's impossible to find a path from one end to the other. The film room/lounge for the men couldn't even fit the team.

Practice times were horrible no matter what sport you were due to space. The classroom part either had rooms that were too big or too small. Not to mention it was always 90 degrees up there. Weight room was small and locker facilities for regular students on other end of the intramural building.

That place is just becoming old.

What's the cost on remodelling the BSA? 15 million? I'm guessing Hyslop would be that if not more if you're trying to all the extras and not just the main gym.

The weight room in the Hyslop is way bigger than the weight room in the Betty.

  9. I am not sure it was all REA to force the old AD out...irregardless....BTW World Juniors broke even is what REA is saying....and as far as Dean leaving...had even more to do with no one backing him with his problems with REA...Dean wanted a contract for life to coach UND...that is a fact!!

I forgot...hire a editor to Sioux Illustrated so now the gross loss can be 50,000 instead of 5 to 10 thousand!! BRILLIANT!!!

  10. Not according to RT, back then, would've it been cheaper to redo the Hyslop. I heard him say it at Boosters. Part of the issue was renovation would have meant asbestos remediation work --> big bucks. (Asbestos is best left alone. It's fine if you leave it alone and don't mess with it. Once you tear into it you have to follow all of the OSHA and EPA regulations.)

And all of those things could have been done. There's just one item not addressed in that list:

Total (all sports) available training space.

That issue wouldn't have been addressed.

The majority of asbestos according to plant services...is not in the walls...its between the floors...so as long as no renovation was done to take out floors...ie what the wellness center was planning on doing...there wouldnt have been a big risk, although they dont know whats in those walls until the get into them, that is what plant services says.

  11. Lefty... RT just got tired of Dealing with REA, esp when they Control the Athletic Budget you are resposible for....It was a contributing Factor to his decision to pursue other oppurtunities...

Dean could have been happy being the Head Coach of the Fighting Sioux for Life..It was His Dream Job...He turned down many Offers over the Years that Included The gophers and NHL...Why move when he did?

Plain and Simple he did not Like going to work at The REA...Fighting over Ice Time,Scheduling, and control over what he and we all Perceived was supposed to be a Sioux hockey Arena 1st....Were your aware that Mr Berning Called the Police on Dean to settle one such dispute...The straw that Forced the move...?

As for real Hockey Fans..I am not talking about Beer Sales in the Arena....I'm refering to the NIGHTCLUB called the "Betty"...by the way Where did our Mens and Womens BBall Teams Practice when there so called practice facility was turned into a NIGHTCLUB..DANCEFLOOR for 12 days/nights in a row?

As Far as other money Making oppurtunities..? Fly the Ralph.com,Lost Money...Their Sat TV Venture, Lost Money...Sunday Bruches on Mothers Day and Easter, Lost Money....Their Concerts Promotions, Lost Money...Sioux Illustrated,Lost Money...Hosted the biggest event of the lifetime "World Juniors"....Lost Money?(we are not sure, they wont tell us).....Getting the Pattern Here...If Betty herself did not Donate to Andre Agassi's Charitable Fund ,the Tennis Match with Andy Roddick, would not have been possible and Lost Money...

We are Lucky enough to Have a 100 million dollar donated Facility, That in the last 4 years , has doubled the Attendance for Hockey Games...At 3X the ticket Price...Sells 48 Suite for over 1 million dollars a year....Has substanially increased concession revenue ,my guess at least 10x greater then the Old Ralph...We (UND) pay to play are games there...and Guess What....They Lose Money...or at Best have not been able to contribute to our athletic department revenues their expected amount, as to why UND athletics is in the RED..?

Maybe its just me but I see a potential Problem

I am not sure it was all REA to force the old AD out...irregardless....BTW World Juniors broke even is what REA is saying....and as far as Dean leaving...had even more to do with no one backing him with his problems with REA...Dean wanted a contract for life to coach UND...that is a fact!!

  12. I understand we may learn about 2-3 kids who have been offered scholarships in the next few days.  We are in the running for two that we really want but who knows......

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Verbal committment from Derek Benter committed to the MBB team this weekend, from Divide County High School, ND...Crosby, ND native.

  13. :D  Here we go... NDSU is GREAT! Bring on the GOPHERS!!! NDSU plays the most difficult schedule in D1-(AA). UND is terrible. Thomas is a big pansy. Kup-cake doesn't have the balls to play the mighty Bison! NDSU would beat UND with 7 guys on the field. NDSU may have the talent to beat NEBRASKA next year! Greatest NDSU team since Phil Hansen played. UND couldn't beat Montana Tech! blah blah blah Who freakin' cares? :)

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

you mean like UND did??? the second string played in the 3rd quarter...do some research before you flap!!!

  16. i may be wrong...but dont some gambling places in town, southgate maybe some others help fund the blue line club??

If they do, wont a casino hurt their $$ making ability?? I also heard the Blue line club helps fund the legion baseball teams and other youth skating programs, I hope the city council and others know all the facts and how a casino could hurt that funding!!!

  17. 100 out of over 5000 enrolled members?

That's a really poor tournout.  Also consider that several of those who attended were probably not enrolled members.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

5% turn out isnt that good??? again minority rules...in his eyes

Graham....if you get your wish and like they say....you may get what you wish for....i hope your children will enjoy their education at UND....oh thats right...they wont be able to come here....because in 20 years no one will remember the Sioux and what they stood for.....

  18. Like I said, it goes then to tradition and stability.  Central's coaches have been together for 25+ years and kids are coming through who know the coaches and know the tradition.  RR has been through multiple coaches and different schemes and that makes it much harder to build a tradition and a winning program.

It's not just the hockey players who don't play football.  Many of the top athletes just don't play football.  These kids are playing basketball, hockey, tennis, whatever sport it is on a year round basis.  That may be the difference between RR and Central.  I don't want to get into the whole money thing, but a lot of the athletes from RR are the ones that play golf at the country club and tennis year around at Center Court.  If you look at the Golf and Tennis teams that is why RR is dominant and Central is not.  However, I think that if Vern can get a couple of winning seasons under his belt and in front of the kids that it will help spur a few good classes out of the youngsters.

Another down side is the parents at RR.  The parents think they have too much say with these coaches.  Mike Berg couldn't believe what RR coaches put up with with these parents.  They just call the coaching office or the coaches house and say what they think is wrong and what needs to change.  Berg said he just doesn't have to deal with that.  That is really a branch off of the coaching changes that RR has gone through, but it's also a reason the changes have happened.  Remember Kerry Jaeger?  The guy won multiple state championships and the parents revolted against him saying that he was playing the wrong people.  Remember Paul Peterson?  He was working hard to turn the football program around when the parents, led by someone we've talked about quite a bit on this site, and his wife, ran him out.  I mean they tried to run off Bart Manson.  The guy turned around a program that was down and had some great teams.  Sure, they didn't make the State tourney for a few years, but that doesn't happen over night.  Now RR is predominantly one of the better teams in the East.  Well, my kids not playing and he is the next LeBron James, better call Bart.  The parents just feel that they need to control everything.  Let your kid take his lumps and maybe not play as a freshman, even though you think he is God's gift to the Earth.  Every parent thinks their child is the best, some just realize that the coach knows what he's doing.

    Peace and hairgrease

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

gotta love those RR parents...in fact werent they trying to get Bart out of BB as well?? his dad is a coaching legend and Bart has been around hoops his whole life!!! Hard to imagine someone better suited for the job...it comes to a point and time for those coaches to set up a meeting with the parents....set them down and tell them look....i may not know everything...i may not know anything but if your kid is on my team...my way is the way its going to be....the problem with the kids at RR is the parents tell them how they should be playing.....and as a kid....who will you listen to?? your parent or the coach...that is a no brainer....and the minute a coach loses that respect and ability to lead...its all over...cuz those kids will doubt everything he says...because their parents called him or her a idiot and they dont know what their doing....just MO...take it for what its worth!!
