  1. I'm sick to my stomach about the Hanson thing......talk about unlucky....wait how long to start a game, and be out before halftime.

If his ankle is broken does that mean Joe comes into serious contention to be the starting QB? Or do you let Hendrickson run the show until Hanson comes back? Remember, Hendrickson is looking good against a horrible team.

    uh, joe bradley transfered*

    *edit: last i checked

  2. sitting im my apartment, doing homework ??? Freshman turnout must be great, which would make sense with rea tickets reportedly selling out.

since alot of you are at the game, semo tied with central michigan at half.

EDIT: someone post a pick of the student section please

  3. Just saw on twitter than Dom Izzo picked UND to go 4-7 this year.

not entirely unreasonable. UND will only be a clear favorite in two games (tonight and UNC), and a clear underdog in at least 3 (sdsu, ewu, msu). I with be pleased with 6-5.

  4. I've been told that the normal student ticket allotment was sold out yesterday afternoon.

However, they are still giving out student tickets to any who request them. I think this is a good idea in the sense that it creates a more fun and exciting atmosphere within the student section specifically. Maybe that will help make their decision for coming to future games this year.

Well over 3,000 students should be in attendance at the game tonight, if what I'm being told is true.

i was told this morning that the student ticket allotment was not sold out, and i have a ticket for the normal student section. I can't imagine that 3,000 students are going to show up. Hell I'm not sure I would believe that 3,000 students actually know about the game.

not sure how accurate this is, but looks like there are still lots of open seats. (zoom in on the seating to see individual seats) looks like the equivalent of 6 unsold sections, not including students, mostly in 201, 202, 207, 208, 209, 217 and 218. Not including students, i'd say there are 3000 unsold tickets at this point. Hopefully there are lots of gate sales.

  6. It’s important to appeal to the fans, especially the student body, early and often in this season opener. Why may you ask; because initial impression is everything. For instance, last year’s first game (a game against Drake- certainly not a better matchup than the S. Dakota game) drew the second largest crowd of the season. It was on a Thursday night and a home opener – just like this year. If you appeal to the students early, they will likely continue to come. That includes great tailgating, great entrance, and a great showing (including jerseys). Last year, so many students noticed the mediocre-at-best atmosphere during the first game, and left before the game was even over and never came back for another game.

this applies to the previous 3-4 years as well. New students show up, get bored, and tune out for 4 years by the end of the 3rd quarter. Not having that happen again would be a nice step, but i'll believe it when I see it. Hopefully i can make at least some of the game tonight, it barely fits in between class and work.

  7. Who are you referring to as "North Dakota"? All the people I talk to are embarrassed by that ranking. No one I know embraces it. What are you basing your statement on? Because if it's word of mouth or what you've heard or read (like me) then I guess our experiences cancel each other out.

who exactly do you associate with? that ranking is a huge source of pride with students.

Its not a coicidence the Northern states have low unemployment. Winter. You head south if ya got no money.

They also have competent education systems, which is kind of a big deal. People always rag on the poor achievement of american high school students ver the last 20 years, but the US looks *much* better if you exclude the former confederacy. The poor standing of american schools is largely do to the south being awful.

  8. The Herald has more reporters covering UND sports than the Forum (with 3x the circulation and a metro that is more than twice that of GF-EGF). They are Wayne Nelson (football, basketball, misc. others), Tom Miller (football, basketball, volleyball, misc. others) and Schloss (men's and women's hockey, football, when needed, misc. others).

Forum has Kolpack (football, basketball, misc. others), Kevin Schnepf (football, basketball, misc. others) -- oh, and Izzo chimes in from the TV station with Social media tweets and video blogs.

Comparatively speaking, the Herald does quite well with the limited resources it has given the diverse and rabid sports passions within its readership area.

keep in mind that the three herald reporters also cover UND sports for the Forum as well now. I don't think UND people don't have too much to complain about in terms of coverage in local papers, and for the most part they don't, at least relative to say, bison fans toward the forum. There are three relevant athletic programs in Fargo, and have roughly 1/2 the staff for them.

  9. I don't think UND will lose by THAT much. ;)

EDIT: Sorry, couldn't waste the smart alecky response, based on your glass-half empty history toward UND athletics and the fact that the home team traditionally is the latter number on the scoring line, hence "6" would be attributed to UND ( I know, others on here listed it the same way, but in most cases, they assigned the team name to the corresponding score.)

    Rock on!

i've never noticed the home team being list second. Oh well. If i seem glass half empty, prehaps it's because my half empty glasses have repeatedly turned out to be much more than half empty. My time as a student has been marked by nothing but flaming ineptitude.

I think UND could win this game by 80 if they wanted to, but i don't think they will bother.

also when you share a board with cranks like geaux_sioux who thinks UND is effectively a sure thing national championship bet, reasonable estimates might seem pessimistic.

  10. I'm not sure that UND would ever get serious consideration for an fbs conference. The fargodome and uni domes are too small for fbs, and both are significantly larger than the alerus. The Grand Forks market is also way too small. The same applies to basically every western school in a small city, ie bozeman or missoula*.

We live in a world where ODU and georgia state were picked for FBS over established powers like georgia southern, app state, and JMU, and all three of those schools have pretty large advantages over UND and even NDSU.

That said, I'm still a fan of UND to the summit. except for UN-o, the I-29 schools are all peers academically and athletically. With UND it would have enough teams to 1) be stable at a minimum of 7 members and 2) nearly be large enough to field its own conference in football, with 5 members. Additionally, if denver winds up in the summit, which is pretty plausible, that would put 3 of the hockey schools in the same conference for all sports.

*fargo and sioux falls are also both to small.

  11. i think putting down bismarck state 'university' is something both ndsu and UND can get behind. This is all about bismarck continuing to try to legislate it's way to be the biggest city in the state.

As it is the state doesn't have the population to support either of its premier universities. UND and NDSU might as well be U-M Fargo and U-M Grand Forks.

And what sense does it make to train nurses and doctors in a place with limited resources and off the charts living expenses, not to mention terrible livability?

If ND ever builds a second med school, it had better be in Fargo.

  12. Online education will continue to become more and more important. People are trying to find ways to fit education into their lives, not everyone can take 4-6 years out of their life to spend in college. And there is a great deal of difference between online degree mills and legitimate online education courses. Accreditation helps sort out one from the other.

you really didn't make an argument here. Online education will always be a second-rate alternative for a few people with no good options, and provide degrees of dubious merit, while simultaneously missing the most important part of many degree programs, which is the networking.

  13. online education will always be a minor sideshow. I'd rather UND not become an online degree mill.

Doesn't the aviation school with its national recruiting have much higher standards than the rest of UND for admission? Shouldn't that be pulling up average scores?

  14. This might be true, with NDSU football possibly finding their place in FCS now, might finally be back to where things are back to where they should, right about even with UND hockey. Either way, much as I dislike UND, they bring good attention from the hockey world. NDSU football, as much as you folks don't like it, bring good attention from the FCS world.

Ohh Johnboy I do enjoy your posts from time to time but the Sports Illustrated article IS true, and the recent challenge between UND Hockey and NDSU Football really tells the tale:

    UND Hockey blog 2,000,000+ pageviews

    NDSU Football Blog 600,000 pageviews

They are not on the same level now and I would venture to say ever. Once again NDSU has a great football program, no doubt about it. But until SU football is playing in a conference like the Big Ten they will never be on the same level as UND Hockey.

Come to a UND Hockey in Denver or Colorado College and you will see what I mean when you see that half of the arenas attendance are UND fans. I also tend to agree with Catters post in that soon the normal thing will be UND Football about as even as SU Football.

If all we are going on is the vews of blogs, no one really has a case here. Some things that are relevant: ticket prices (UND), game attendance (NDSU), total attendance (UND), prestige (tossup).

Ndsu is a Major power at a minor level (nfl>fbs>fcs) of a major sport. UND is a major power in an intermediate level (nhl>d1>etc) of a minor sport. Neither school at this point can point to their sports being a particularly big deal, so stop trying.

  15. Do you also believe in unicorns?

No, but based on your posting i think you do.

Actually I should walk that back I bit, because I don't know what it would take for UND to actually fire muss. the 5-6 or 6-5 season i'm expecting probably won't be enough. I think 4 wins or more and he is probably back for 2013.

  16. while i would probably have UND in the mid thirties or so, I can see them being unranked so i'm not really bothered by it. Cal Poly i think is a pretty poor exclusion, consdering I think they have an outside shot at winning the bigsky and pulling out a seed.

    3) MONTANA ST

    7) EASTERN WASHINGTON

    14) NORTHERN ARI ZONA

    20) MONTANA

certainly someone else from the big sky is a top 40 team. I think the league is a little top-heavy, but not that bad. Also, if he is as wide off on NDSU this year as last year, I think they might be pretty good.
  17. JL > five guys

Rhombus would be alot better if the crust wasn't always so soggy, which i'm assuming is due to the !@#!$ ovens.

Two restaurants I miss are campbells fresh (which > JL, BTW), and Joe Dimagios. Never got to try to do the colossal burger before it closed in 2006.

EDIT: joe blacks has pretty decent bar food, just leave before 8.

  18. anyone have evidence that UND has been offered money from Sanford?

Also I believe Sanford is now based out of fargo, as a condition of the Sanford/Meritcare merger.

There's a difference between having your name on everything in sight and being a world-regarded medical institution.

    Signed,

    The Mayo Brothers

Didn't mayo just align with altru? Altru is a pretty poor hospital imo.

Of course that's probably why its not named Mayo, so maybe you do have a point.
