Who gives a F what Mankato thinks and who gives a F about the pairwise. These boys need to throttle Canisus to no end BOTH nights to correct the hockey universe. Both hockey programs need to be reminded of where things really stand in the college hockey world, and two horrible blow outs are the only way to reinstate that reality. Most importantly the team, coaching staff and fan base need this double blow-out to remedy and wash away the bad taste from last season once and for all (for the most part).

No slowing down and no mercy on the scoreboard or with the physicality. Get these kids to learn to have that killer instinct right away to start the season so they can carry that mind set all season long. All business, all game long, every single weekend.  Because after these two past seasons, they obviously know what it’s like not being able to have that fire-power or ability to bury teams, or even beat them. Give them this new feeling of being able to destroy teams that embarrassed them recently and they’ll never want to go back. They’ll play salty all season long and just bury and embarrass teams who can’t keep up.

I think two embarrassing blow outs will be the only way to wash away all the canisius jokes that have been floating around for the past year. Series like that are heard around the country and are remembered for years. They can and do hurt the reputations of programs. Proving that it was an absolute fluke, will suppress all of that junk.

I hope Berry and the boys are as pissed as I am. And I hope they stay that way all year Long. No better time or place to showcase this new attitude than in front of a thirsty crowd at the Ralph on opening weekend.

    Yes this.. Chip on shoulder

  2. I have a question, that I don't know the answer. Please DO NOT take this as I believe it, but I'm just asking the question. I'm wondering if the fact that Berry is such a nice guy is what is causing the hard nosed, play with edge, chip on the shoulder, don't screw with me type attitude (that we have always had) to drop off. Is Berry intense like Hak was at practice? I remember reading articles that Hak was extremely intense at practice and games. That would have to rub off on your players. Is this just because Berry isn't that way? Again I don't know this to be true but just simply asking the question.

The only problem with playing that way is you tend to get a little to into the game and then you push someone and hurt their feelings and get a penalty for what used to be a hockey play

That is true, we need to ride that line I believe. That elusive line.

Can you give me one way the current usage agreement with the REA is beneficial to the football program? They pay rent at the Alerus Center and give 52% of their ticket revenue to the REA. Plus I think they get dinged for some of the expenses to run the HPC. The REA has a lot of money in reserves, I'm having a hard time buying that they continue to need football ticket revenue or that they ever should have to begin with.

I concede the basketball program is benefiting but it's fair to point out the exposure potential is greater than anything on campus and it's not really close.

Agree 100% the football ticket revenue needs to be removed from the REA contract, in no way, shape or form should the football program pay for the hockey program at all. That money needs to all go back to the U/football program. Is that enough to drive the football program to new heights? I honestly don't know? Also why can't we get a deal like NDSU has with the Dome? No rent, free to use for games, etc. That was reported on this board many pages ago.

This silo approach to funding athletics you speak of is a weird way to run a ship.  I think the disconnect is that most of us on here see the Athletic Department as a single entity made up of individual programs -- some big and some small -- very few lucrative and most hemorrhaging cash. What many of us don't see and what we don't believe in is an everyone-for-themselves approach. That kind of mindset may be awesome for the lucrative program(s) but does nothing to move the needle forward for the Athletic Department as a whole, and by extension, the University. This is especially true when your power program is a niche program followed mostly by a vast minority of folks in nine or 10 states on the U.S. northern tier. It's like Johns Hopkins lacrosse rolling off umpteen national championships in a row -- if a tree falls in the forest and no one's there to ....   Oh hell, you get the point.

EDIT: My point is that many of us who tend to argue your points aren't satisfied with JUST the hockey team doing well. We want the hockey team and as many other programs as possible to do well, especially in sports that will garner more press nationally, such as football and basketball.  Look at how Loyola Chicago blew up in this year's Big Dance.

Very well said. I am 100% in favor of funding the football and bb programs more, however we can not cut back on the hockey team. I agree that the football ticket sales part of the REA contract makes no sense at all. That money should go back to the University (football team) to be reinvested back into the program. Is there a way that can be accomplished? Is there a way to fund Football and BB with more money and still fund Hockey (our largest followed sport) at the same level we do today?

Too many eggs in that niche basket.

wow you sound like an NDSU supporter, "Hockey doesn't matter because it's a niche sport." You think that is helping the divide in the fan base? It's easy for you to say that the problem is the hockey only fans? Pot meet kettle. WOW I thought you were better than that. Guess not.

Typically, I would agree with you. But the contrast of hockey to football at UND is different than most places. I'm not saying it isn't possible to make Football bigger than hockey, but it is highly unlikely give the history and tradition of the hockey program.

Now if you know me at all from my posts, I absolutely love UND football and would love nothing more than to see it boom into something huge. But sheer will is not enough for that to happen. First, and absolutely most important, the football team needs to start winning more (something the hockey team does consistently, with the exception of this year) that draws and retains fans, and generates incomes to reinvest into athletics. Now NDSU has made that more difficult for us with there success, it is just harder to win the recruiting battles (maybe we should have gone D1 when they did; different discussion for a different place). This transition won't happen overnight, and simply reallocating funds to the program will not generate wins. There has to be additional funds for the program sure, but the school isn't going to short the most consistent athletic program that they have either; the one that does perform on the national stage, pumps out NHL players, and gets  some national publicity (yes, I understand that in the big picture it is a niche sport; but it also needs to be recognized that we are not a Big 10 school).

Could UND put all the pieces in place to become an NDSU in football? sure, but it will still be FCS; still something to strive for, but should not take away from your currently successful program to do so. (I'm not cashing in my Google stock to invest it all in a new start up, hoping for the same return; maybe I hedge some funds, but you can diversify without overly risking your cash cow).

As for Basketball, this is even tougher. Growing and sustaining this fan base is completely dependent on consistent winning seasons, recruiting better players (more Hookers/Crandalls/ and hopefully Bijiek) who can draw people to watch. To make basketball a big time sport at UND, they would need to make the NCAA tourney at least once every few years, and still be competitive in years that they miss it; not easy to do in a 1 bid league. Look at NDSU a few years ago, when they had a nice string of appearances, and some big wins. Even that didn't vault their program much.

Kind of a catch 22, you need fans to generate money, you need money to grow programs, you need wins to generate fans. Football needs to string together some success and I certainly hope they do it starting this year. Get into the playoffs and make a run. That means, win a few games that you aren't expected to win.

Yes, UND needs to continue to grow Football, and with increases in attendance they have been on the right track. But the success of football (and basketball for that matter) should be independent (for the most part) from hockey. Can you imagine what would happen if Villanova basketball wasn't getting their due funds, because the school wanted to throw some of that money towards FCS football? Like I said, I am all for growing Football in Basketball; I enjoy watching both, but you're talking about a smaller market school with limited funds (far different from your Big Ten teams). Funds are limited for the school, and for the fans as well. People have limited time, so you can't have the same fan base fully supporting hockey, basketball and football and you also can't tell people which sport they should support. People support hockey because it has sustained success for a long time, and planted roots into the community. Football can do the same, and did very will with this at the D2 level. What you need is more people in general, to hopefully create a football fan base, a hockey fan base, and a basketball fan base .... with some (but not total) overlap between the groups.

As for cutting programs, what were they supposed to do? If you run out of money, how do you sustain that many opportunities? I hate that UND had to cut programs, but they did have to do it. You want more money for football, but you don't want them to free up more funds? Its contradicts itself a bit. Limited funds ... you have to do something. I understand your sentiment of wanting football to be the top dog, but it comes across as though you would rather punish a different program for their success because it isn't the program you prefer.

    Just my thoughts .....

Long post but very well said. I think this is what everyone needs to read. Yes UND needs to grow Football and BB but NOT as the expense of the hockey program. Now I do believe that UND should be getting more of take than they currently are, if that means everything stays the same for the hockey program AND we can stick more money into Football and BB, great!

we will still have women's hockey However no schollies

Just curious, how much money would that actually save? I honestly don't know, is the big expense with WIH the scholarships or is it the travel and everything else?

Women's hockey, Men's and Women's tennis are dropped.  Big cut to Men's hockey budget.

    That's my guess.

I think Women's hockey, M/W S/D are cut. They better not cut hockey budget...

  10. Super excited that is finally Goofer-Sioux week again!! Always a great week leading up to the games. After this weekend Duluth exposed some of our weaknesses. Now Berry gets to earn that paycheck and correct the issues. I think he does somewhat, as fixing them all will take more time, and we win Friday (we'll be pissed) and tie on Saturday.
