  1. So about this...claims seem fairly far off-base so far.

I give them credit for putting the list out there, but you do not know what I had done after I found out about this as far as contacting numerous people at the university.  I am not saying that I caused the list to come out, I would have hoped that they did this on their own.  However, I doubt I was the only one to make contact about this issue.  The last part of the argument about remaining "North Dakota", and putting the other choices up to compete against it is still up in the air.  I sincerely hope it happens.

  2. I would like to state how non-transparent this process is likely to be.  I have numerous patents and have worked on some trademarking of product names, but never as a government entity.  I assumed that we could, if necessary, get a FOIA request to see the population of votes for the nicknames (or remaining the University of North Dakota).  That will not be the case since they are using an outside agency to gather the nickname suggestions.  I would hope that folks would push to make this happen, and push the committee to make this known.  This is very disturbing, but I figured there would be a way to keep the public from knowing once they put some nicknames up to vote.  If they are afraid to put remaining the University of North Dakota up against a couple of options like the Screamin' Muskrats or Mighty Spudders, then we should know why this would happen.  I am getting tired of the majority not getting a say it what is going to happen.  I feel any nickname should be powerful enough to gather more votes than remaining the University of North Dakota.  If there is one, than so be it and it will be implemented.  My point is why should we "settle".  If no nickname is good enough to surpass remaining without one, than we should not have one.  I would just hope that the university would be open about what is going on and I would hope the committee will be able to get the information from the marketing agency ad pass that on prior to any choice of votes happening.

  3. I am sure there's a thread on some Cal-Irvine Anteaters message board out there somewhere that boasts about all the Anteater logo sightings that have been witnessed around the world by its fan base, because, um, every fan base seems to have one. Different fan bases notice their beloved logos out in pubic and in the media because they are actually looking for it. The reason we notice so much UND/Fighting Sioux stuff out there is because (A) it's really cool and a great logo, and (B) because we are actually looking for it.  I do it whenever I go to West Acres in Fargo (or anywhere for that matter in Fargo), visiting my hometown in western North Dakota, attending the State Fair in Minot, whenever I go to the Mall of America, Airports around the world, big public events everywhere, etc. You probably have seen more Cal-Irvine Anteaters stuff out in public during your travels, on TV and in other media than you realize, but it escaped you because you weren't actually fixated on noticing it.

Point is -- your assertion is not unique to UND and its FS nickname and logo. Everyone notices their favorite team's stuff out in public. But it would be great to have something a little more concrete to identify with amd rally around moving forward than just the name of our school, even if it takes a few generations for it to be accepted.  You can't tell me that UCSB Banana Slugs nickname was embraced with open arms right away by the populace, but now it is as beloved to them as the Fighting Sioux nickname is to us.

I do notice other universities logos when I travel, so I disagree somewhat with your assertion about not noticing other universities.  I have been in the LA area a few times and did see a couple of UC-Irvine shirts and sweaters (even some Gaucho stuff).  I am sure they are proud of their logo and I was not mentioning this to demean their logo at all.  I just wanted to point out that having a logo does not mean $, it must mean something to those who want to wear it.

  4. Under the settlement agreement UND must maintain its trademark rights to the retired name and logo. As such, UND must use them in commerce at some periodicity. So, there will be some (> $0) coming in from the retired name and logo.

You are correct in your statement, and I actually laughed when I saw it in the language about maintaining rights years ago as I was not sure how that could be done.  As I stated previously, this could be done by some historical use in a game or two every couple of years by some athletic team and they would have to sell off those jersey's/sweaters for money to make this happen.  As powerful and corrupt as the NCAA is, I do not think they are above the trademark laws, but nothing will surprise me anymore.

  5. The premise is simple.  It is easier to sell something (a new nickname and logo) than nothing (what UND currently has for a nickname).  North Dakota is not a sports nickname.  It is the name of the state.  University of North Dakota North Dakota sounds stupid, but that is what you would print out if you were using North Dakota as a nickname.  North Dakota doesn't work well for a lot of chants, "Here we go, North Dakota, here we go (clap, clap)."  We have already seen that the interlocking ND logo is not a big seller, and is confused with Notre Dame.  What UND has been using for the past 3 years is not working from a marketing standpoint, and it isn't working from a cheer standpoint.  All it does is encourage a significant portion of the crowd to continue using Fighting Sioux while others won't use Fighting Sioux.  Yes, people will continue to use Fighting Sioux no matter what is chosen, but a new nickname will give others something they can use other than the name of the state.

Yes, the amount of success that a new nickname or logo will have will depend on the quality of the nickname and logo  plus how quickly it is accepted.  I think that the committee will find something that a lot of the non-fanatics will accept.  But I also believe that almost any new nickname and logo will be more successful from a marketing standpoint than what UND is using now.  There are schools out there using Billikens, and Anteaters, and Banana Slugs that have success.

I'm not sure what kind of ulterior motive I could have by promoting the selection of a new nickname, especially when I haven't been promoting any specific nickname.  I have seen quite a few that I believe would work, some better than others.  I believe that the committee may have gotten others that would also work that we may not have heard yet.  Every other school that has chosen a new nickname has found one that works for them.  If every other school that has been through a similar process in the past 40+ years (going back to Stanford) has been able to find an acceptable nickname, then I believe that UND can do so also.  So I am very confident that UND will also find a solution that works in spite of the apprehension that some people seem to have about the process.

Your "premise" of a North Dakota logo not being marketable is without any background.  Even your suggestions of Anteaters (Cal-Irvine), and others actually makes a point in that how many of those do you see.  I travel all over the country and outside the country and I have seen "Fighting Sioux" logos everywhere, but never one of the others you mentioned.  A "North Dakota" logo could be marketable, and none of us know how marketable that vs. some other nickname or logo could compare.  The university can not promote any of the "Fighting Sioux" logos other than those kept for historical purposes and so 0$ can be made from that unless they get permission from the NCAA for a historical use at some point maybe for a game.  I doubt that will happen, but is a possibility that I will give you for them making money.   I am correct that the most "popular" nickname suggestions were to be brought forward for a vote (of course you are correct that they have to meet NCAA requirements, and the committees requirements, but that is part of my argument that no nickname will fit under that because someone will make something offensive out of anything that is came up with), and I will hope popular means the suggestion that came up the most.

  6. Why the degrading language:  "Only a fool" and "Your idea makes no sense" ?

We've had several logo changes in recent history:  Sammy, Blackhawk, Geometric, Brien.  Shall we work on controlling measures for each since they would all be in competition for the new one?  What about the interlocking UND?  I bet many would prefer that to some weather graphic or petite bird.  Going to be especially difficult to keep that pesky Blackhawk logo under wraps... still widely licensed and in use, internationally, and worn by former UND athletes no less!  And, just how pathetic is this new logo that it needs to be protected from speech?  An effeminate cowboy?  A flower?  Some sort of animal with big teeth that can be easily designed into a joyful, lovable mascot kids can hug at games?

You can't control the public.  Like guns, the Brien artwork is so widely distributed on merchandise that it wouldn't matter if a few more shirts and hats were commissioned by a tribe as owner and licensor.  It is not going away for decades.

The argument is to do what is honorable, not what is somehow advantageous for the University.  You seem to fear the free market, and perhaps you should.  A new nickname is going to suck for a very long time.  That is an undeniable truth.  It will be weak and lame and no self respecting Fighting Sioux fan is going to like it one bit.

I say, nickname = state name = North Dakota.

    taz

I believe you are stating what most people feel is reasonable at this time and you will have folks call you names for feeling that way.  I will add a couple of things to watch for in the near future.  President Kelley will find some way to keep the "North Dakota" choice off of the ballot.  I know that it is the highest balloted "name" and I will get a FOIA request immediately if it is not on the ballot.  I am sure I am not the only one that will push that request and battle to not have a ballot until those numbers are made public.  It was stated that the ones with the highest votes will be put forward and I do not believe that will be the case.  The "North Dakota" choice meets all of the requirements that the original committee said were necessary.  No nickname or logo other than "North Dakota" will not have someone from NDSU or Minnesota come up with something offensive regarding that nickname or logo.  Impossible.  That will immediately contradict what the original nickname committee stated to the Herald that it was looking for in a nickname.  Again, I state that that is impossible as anything can be found to be offensive in some way to some one.  Then again, I guess I could be wrong since if a "Crusader" cannot be deemed offensive to a particular religious group by the NCAA, the sky could be the limit on what we could get.

  7. Thanks for your dedication and being a fun player to watch.  True to the Sioux tradition.

Most people remember the great goals, but it is more than that as fans watching the Sioux.  I remember watching Oshie against Michigan Tech near the end of the season take a puck to the chest killing a power play when we were ahead 3-1 with under 4 minutes to play.  He did not get hurt, but I am sure Mark Mac was just doing what needed to be done just like Oshie did.  You see the same from Stecher, Ausmus, etc. on this team which makes it special as the young kids are seeing what needs to be done.

Best wishes for a great career ahead.  Looking forward to watching you in the future.  Hopefully see you in Boston at the Hockey Humanitarian ceremony.

How can THIS school manage to form a brand and identity without a wolverine logo?

You could have just as easily posted the Minnesota"M" or Miami(OH)"M", which are easily distinguished from one another. On many of their uniforms that is all they have, or maybe a tiny logo that is hardly seen. They seem to do just fine without a nickname or logo on those uniforms, so why do we need one? I will answer myself. We do not. President Kelley stated right when he started that the teams do not play for the logo, but the school. Just like most progressives, I guess he is allowed to change his mind.
  9. I never did hear back, but the stream worked for me.

Regarding wireless vs. wired, that's been mixed for me.  I was able to stream perfectly fine on iPad (obviously wireless), and Airplay it to my Apple TV, which is hardwired.  But then with my laptop it wouldn't stream very well on wireless so I had to plug it in, but at that point the laptop was sitting next to my TV so it was ok to be plugged in.

Quality wise, I would say it's about 80-90% of the way from SD to HD.  Not perfect HD quality, but definitely way better than standard definition.  Very watchable, and much better than a couple years ago.

I totally agree with you on this.  Since I changed to viewing from my IPad to TV via Apple TV it took away the jerkiness of the feed.  A very good, fast, Windows based computer running IE or Chrome on the same wireless setup provides a jerky feed.  I have no problems with other feeds on my tower, and Neulion is no help on this and is the same no matter who I use.  Definitely recommend the Apple TV for those who can get it.  I would since FCS is now a shadow of what it was in the past and with Midco does not look to get better.  Those outside the MN, SD, ND area need to utilize NCHC TV and the Apple TV platform works the best from everything that I have tried.  FYI, I have one of the fastest wireless modems on the market (5GHz with location learning) and great internet speed, which does not help in the jerkiness.

  10. The last that was stated was "it will be likely a few games on FCS".  It is becoming more and more clear that getting games on a national stage is not high priority for Midco, and they want to get a few more customers locally.  There has been absolutely nothing from UND to state any efforts on their part in any efforts recently.  Really sad for those outside the ND, MN, SD footprint that have to rely on the supposed ever improving webcasts.  Like last weeks games that ended with about 10-15 seconds left in the broadcast.  When Denver actually has more push than UND for TV coverage, that says a lot for those involved.  But remember, it is on pay-per-view on NCHC-TV so everyone get in line.

  11. The only issue I had with the game last night was the brightness was a little greater on the mirroring of my IPad to AppleTV, but pretty good otherwise. I will try to work on that. I do feel for the NCHC in getting this going, promising a lot, and not making sure what capabilities the schools have. This is garbage though, and definitely not better than watching on FCS. I would take this for away games, with a few bugs.

  12. It is really sad that Midco would hold up this deal.  As was mentioned, they actually did have it on FCS prior to the CBSSN deal.  I do not buy the advertiser end, because that still goes out nationally which is not a bad thing.  Those outside the ND,SD, MN area have gotten the short end for the last couple of years and the vision for national exposure should have been thought about.  Obviously the CBSSN deal has done nothing until January this season, and the NCHC-TV is a good thing for those on the road, but it is still a long way from true HD in your home viewing.  It has improved from last year, but it is not a long term solution until they get all the bugs worked out.  The action live video is still jittery, and please do not buy the "it is on your end" answer.  The improvements have been in the addition of Apple products to be able to run the games, and the PIP option for all the games.  The PIP is good for those who had a subscription for UNDInsider this year, but it will be interesting to see how many subscribers will bail next year if the quality does not improve and only do the school subscription.  I realize the cost is not too much more, but it still will be interesting.

  13. Just remember, it is all on your end. My subscription, which was supposed to be "All-access", based on my UND Insider premium subscription is "UND Only" on the NCHC TV site. I should have checked on that earlier, but that is what I get for having a little trust. I do not expect a great deal from Neulion, as far as speed to correct any issues based on past experience. You can say what you want about other systems that they supposedly run (NHL, etc.), but it all comes down to how badly they want to do this and support it. Sad to hear about more problems, but as I said I do not even have access to other games yet to provide input.

  14. Just as an FYI folks, for those of you who have signed up for NCHCTV as a UNDInsider via that e-mail, you better check your subscriber status.  We are supposed to be an "All Access" package, but I tried to check out the UMD/Wisconsin women's game last night and it said that I did not have access.  I than checked my subscription, and it said it was just for UND.  I tried to e-mail them through the contact us form twice, and received one computer generated response that they received my e-mail.  No actual response yet, but if it is going through Neulion, that is not surprising based on past experiences.

  15. Red River High School already has that logo. Personally if they come up with something new it better be just as good as what we had, or better. Not something recycled from a different school.

I do not think you read my post very well. The Theodore Roosevelt character would be a MASCOT, not a logo, or I did not say to use "Roughriders", as a nickname. By getting a mascot, we would totally satisfy the NCAA requirement and we can just be North Dakota.
  16. I totally agree with keeping it just "North Dakota" without any new nickname or logo.  However, I do have a way of making this a compromise.  In the theme of keeping it just "North Dakota", we could adopt a mascot like a Theodore Roosevelt character to play on the theme of North Dakota as the "Roughrider State", but adopt no nickname or logo.  That would take care of the NCAA nonsense.  Hey, the Washington National's have a president race using caricatures during inning breaks, so how can that be bad.  Keeping with the inclusive nature of the progressive movement going on, if folks wanted to wear a roughrider outfit, meadowlark, or wild prairie rose's on an outfit to the game to celebrate us as just "North Dakota", that would be their choice and who are we to decide what folks want to wear.   If folks want to wear jersey's with any Sioux logo, or yell "Sioux" at the end of our national anthem, who can argue that they are just being inclusive.  The Sioux are indeed a great and proud part of North Dakota, and who in all of their progressive little mind would deny somebody as being excluded like the great American Indian or Native American heritage of the great state of North Dakota.

I think this is a great way to make sure everyone is satisfied and we can move on.

  17. Oh interesting. I followed the gophs heavy that year as my buddies older bro played for the gophs. I obviously remember the parise years but I don't remember how they got knocked out those years.

I do not care to remember it much, but it could help the guys this year. The 2004 Parise year when Denver did not make it to the FInal FIve, but got an at large bid to the West regional. We beat up on Holy Cross, but lost to Denver 1-0 on a late goal (reminiscent of last night). By the way, Denver went on to win it all that year. I hope that is good karma. We had an awesome team that year, but like folks have said on here, anyone can win this time of year if a goalie gets hot or you do not show up for 60 minutes.
  18. I see there is no internet video for either game this weekend. I would like to be wrong on this, but I cannot find any info on that happening. I also have a question regarding the magical appearance of a NCHC matchup on a Fox Sports station. We were told that that could not happen due to the NCHC "agreement" with CBS Sports Network. My only guess is that this is considered a "local" or "Regional" Fox Sports station similar to Root Sports, so it is allowed. I am not sure how that can be the case because you can get these Fox Sports stations on satellite such as Direct TV, so to me that makes it nationally available.

  19. Bottom line is if we do not get a sweep or a win/tie out of this all of the pairwise prognostications can go out the window. I see splits in the future with teams we would need to sweep to improve the pairwise, so our chance to go to the tourney would have to rely on a friendly Target Center.
