  1. What a waste of money, Who builds a new field that only seats ~4.5K. I heard that SCSU plays their games at night b/c people would rather go watch St. Johns a MIAC team (NCAA DIII). That is like saying people in GF would rather drive 15 min. to watch Mayville State play than the Sioux. How can a school with a fall enrollment of 19,383 students only build a stadium for ~4.5k?? St. Johns fall enrolment 1,865, yes (one thousand eight hundred sixty five), and their stadium holds 5,500 poeple. SCSU has over 10 times the enrolment, builds a smaller stadium, and plays at night because people would rather watch the Johnnies play football. All I can think is total lack of support by the school and community of St. Cloud. Half full in a 4500 seat stadium looks a lot better than 2200 people in a 11,000 seat field.

You can't compare the tradition of SJU football to Mayville State. SJU draws well and always will. If there was any other university in GF that had big gates and shared some of the same fans, they would not play the games at the same time.

I agree the stadium seating capacity is too small. It was short sighted, but i can't bitch after years of Selke.

  2. You bring up very valid points. The media here is out of the Twin Cities so the only air time SCSU gets is when we play The U in hockey. In a metro area of 178,000 the St. Cloud Times only has 29,000 daily (weekday) paper subscribers including area stations and stores. Mankato has local TV and we have larger gates than they do in every sport. What is the answer.

While I feel the stadium is ok for now, I know it should have been built larger. Things went over budget because of the steel prices. Anybody who is in construction knows that building material prices in the last year have gotten out of hand. So now there are 4300 seats rather that 6000. I don't know if we could fill 6000 seats.

The athletic department is horrible at promoting SCSU Football and the booster club is extremely unorganized. There are tons of people that give and are never put in the programs so it looks like there are about only 100 boosters. They have promoted hockey and looks what happens, every game is a sell out.

  3. And I have no doubt that UND will be moving up within a few years. My point is more that SCSU's or UNC's traditionally meager attendance figures are their own fault, rather than a byproduct of being in a particular NCAA classification. St. Cloud in particular is a pretty big community, and the school has a bigger enrollment than UND. It also draws well for both hockey and basketball, so it's a little hard to understand why it shouldn't be able to draw 8000-plus for football, obviously assuming that it had built a facility that could have handled those types of crowds.

I think the SCSU stadium is a bit small but it can be expanded. Honestly, I am happy with the size and I feel that we have algreat deal to prove when it comes to football attendance. Someday, if SCSU can build a tradition and prove that they can fill the stands year after year, then expand the place.

St Cloud metro is a community that is not isolated like Fargo or Grand Forks. The entertainment $ is tough to get. I can make it to downtown Mpls in less than an hour. In Grand Forks UND is king as NDSU is in Fargo. When it comes to football, the St Cloud metro is bitterly divided between SCSU and SJU(DIII). Darn German Catholics! And they have a great deal of tradition. There are few fans "from the woods" that attend SCSU games and we typically do not go to theirs. Their crowd consists of lots of alumni and students. Our crowd is mainly St Cloud metro folk and few students.

So for now I feel the stadium is sufficient.

  4. They are going to try to fit the student body around the field. i think they could go about 15-20 deep on the two ends and the visitor side. so no, there are no standing room tickets. I think there are 4300 seats. (plus standing room) at the time i thought that would be more than enough considering i have been to games at selke with crowds of 1000.

  5. Conboy was and will always be a complete idiot. SCSU is much better off without that negativity. Last year his dad wrote a letter to the St Cloud Times and they published it. He was defending his son and said that he did not deserve the rep that he had up here. That was just unreal. Conboy will probably end up back in St Cloud someday. At Greystone University, The State Pen!

  6. When (and if) they expand the stadium I think they will go on each end because the river is very scenic. Yes, there is room for expansion. There are embankments on each end and on the visitor sides where seating can be built.

  7. Sounds like St. CLoud had just over 4,000 for their game. That's for the stadium-opener. We'll see how much better attendance gets. I'm guessing a slow decline is in order, once the stadium loses its luster. But I may be wrong.

The place only seats 4200 and the students are not up here yet. I too thought there would be more people there but then again, SCSU fans support for football historically is horrible. Hey, its a start and I can't complain. I have been to game with only 500 fans at Selke. In a town like Grand Forks or Fargo, the state universities are king. Our market is a little different. There are many SJU football fans in town also. Out there they get crowds of 6000-7000 and 3000 of them are students. At the game last night there was maybe 200 students. SJU fans and SCSU fans do not go to each others games. Then you take the lack of football tradition and that does not help either. Morris Kurtz (AD) is a horrible promoter.

Things will get better and crowds will get bigger. I refuse to be unhappy about a crowd of 4000 for the UMC game. I think it was great. I don't know the answers but support will continue to grow if a tradition is built

  8. I think most SCSU fans and players would like us to be competitive every year like the UND football program. It is the model for DII football. SCSU aspires to be as good as UND is year in and year out. We want to build a football tradition. SCSU's main rivals are UND, more so in basketball, but people are already talking about the upcoming football game. The UMD rivalry will be good also. (old NIC rival)

  9. How about hanging some real banners from somewhere representing the Sioux NCC titles? The plastic shiny NCAA title banner sure is not very prestigious looking. The Al needs something that is kelly green and white in color somewhere inside of it!

Hey, it's better than the faded, warped red sign that hung on Selke Fied. "1989 NCC Champs". ???

  10. I remember a game at Memorial when Todd Bouman ran in a last second TD to win the game for SCSU. That was my best UND Football memory. Good luck this year. If we can't win the NCC and make the playoffs, I will pull for you guys.

  11. The leg room was the main issue for me. I would compare the width of the seats to the metrodome which is notoriously small seats. REA is much nicer than Marriucci but the seating at UM is nice and roomy.

The main reason I posted was to express my excitment fro UND with the building of The Betty.

  12. WOW does that place look nice! It could be a great homecourt advantage for UND if NCC games were played there. Very nice.

I do hope the seating is a little more spacious that at the REA. That arena is beautiful but the seating is horrible. But anyway it is your arena and not mine.

Looking forward to hosting UND at our new field this fall. Hope many make the trip from Grand Forks.

  13. I am sorry, but why would a network "promote" a sport that the vast majority of the country cares nothing about? It not the job of the networks to make a sport interesting. Just accept the fact that the popularity of hockey will never rival football and basketball.

Don't you get tired of making excuses for the lack of interest in hockey. It is a national sport with regional popularity. In Minnesota, the Gopher Hockey Fans did not even sell out their alloment of tickets for the NCAA tourney. Womens basketball makes the final four and Gopher Fans scramble to get them. Many fans that made the trip could not even get in the arena. The same thing happened when the men made it to San Antonio. If womens sports are tough to watch and lack appeal, then what does that tell you about hockey.

Just accept it and enjoy the great tradition you have in UND Hockey. Your tradition is something to be proud of.

  14. do you honestly think that a crisper picture on the tv will do anything? i think it is the game itself. they game is broken and there is not enough scoring. it is hard to watch. i do enjoy it live but i just can't deal with it on tv. i follow the wcha and attend many games. so i do consider myself a fan of college hockey. besides, nobody will have to worry about the nhl next year because fo the lock out. hockey is not even on the radar for the vast majority of american sports fans and i hope a lock out does not kill the game.

  15. I think Winona was their flag ship..

    1234-

I you are only talking about football the success for WSU is recent. UMD is the traditional power of the NSIC from to bottom, in both mens and womens sports. Also if we want to talk about general prestige, UMD was the flag ship university of the NSIC.

  16. I would not expect the NSIC to respond any other way. They lost their flagship university in UMD and if another university from the NSIC could afford the NCC they would be gone too. It will take some time for the NCC to get the 8th spot. I do hope it is Winona.

  17. If you find it disrespectful to yell Sioux at the end of the anthem don't yell it. I guess there still is freedom of speach. The tradition started by UND is used all over the midwest. Prosonally I feel it is disrespectful so I don't yell Huskies when thousands do. But it does not offend me. I think it sounds cool. Its just like media and universities not using the UND mascot name. It is better for some to just not say or write it than fight about it. People are right to stand up for their point of view. Plus I think that issue is dead anyway, at least in Central MN.

    Good luck to the Sioux.

  18. scsu added womens crew to become compliant. as far as i know there will be no cuts in men's athletics. then scsu athletic department runs in the black and has a budget just under 5 million. msu has a budget of over 6 million and is in the red. i do believe the cuts are due to title IX and $.

SCSU does not have the money to even think about DI. (not that I know the amt of money it would take) It would take a different AD, one who can raise funds and the alumni step up and fork over the jing. And with SCSU being the 12th largest producer of teachers in the nation, that will be a tough sell. Teachers can be tight.

  19. bisonguy is right i actually does take three hours to get 4000 people in that gym. but i dont think there was 4000 in there i would say 3000 and they turned away 4000 more. the nba vowed to never hold an event there again they were upset to say the least..

  20. bring your walking shoes. i have been there many times and parking is a mess. i watched the nba slam dunk contest there and they said there was 4000 people in that gym. i never had seen a gym so packed and the line to get in was 1/2 mile long. i waited for three hours ??? and they turned away thousands. i dont know if csp knows what it is in for with three of the best traveling teams in the ncc coming to town. they should have allocated tickets to each school and thats it! then put signs up stating SOLD OUT! good luck to the ncc schools.
