  1. The NCHC would be wise to become a link in USA Hockey's Officials Development Program. The USHL is part of this program.

The program is designed to develop officials for international and professional competition. Just like players, the officials are taught, graded, and promoted based on who has the skill and performance to keep moving up through the ranks.

I'd like to see the NCHC get involved with it as the next step after juniors but before the pro ranks. I'd like the officials to be on a tenure-track (pressing to get better, knowing they are being evaluated and graded nightly, and looking to move to bigger things) rather than just be tenured, be "fat, dumb, and happy" where they are, and knowing no matter how they ignore the rule book they won't be moved out.

A direct link I think is a bit much. There are a health number of USA Hockey Officials that are also NCAA officials in a variety of leagues.

  2. If that is the case I would hope that the NCHC does not hire Greg Sheppard or some of his cronies we know the bad ones (Todd Anderson, Don Adam just to single out a few) and that the new league would make it apparent that we want to see a more wide open game and not parity for the sake of having more teams in the race at season's end. Let the WCHA have that philosophy let keep it even and close. I want the refs to call the game per the rule book not by the score board.

The wide open game you talk about is in the WCHA. The issue is in the play in the WCHA. The WCHA still likes the clutch-and-grab style of hockey. Every league follows the NCAA Rulebook. Why is it that people across hockey don't like the WCHA officials? 1 reason people don't like them (especially when it comes to NCAA Tournament time is because they allow more physical play than do other league's officials. In my mind that is allowing a more wide open game. However more teams like the clutch-and-grab style in the WCHA. That to me is more a coaching issue. Part of the reason for the parity in the WCHA, UAA was better this past year, Gophers have struggled, UNO, and Bemidji are strong teams. Sure the races are closer but is that the officials or just a sign of expansion and teams becoming more competitive?

  3. Nope we didn't miss you and the nice things none of them will be reffing the NCHC hopefully. They can go with the WCHA....

You're telling me you missed all those wonderful conversations about the great WCHA officiating? Damn! I would assume though that some of the WCHA/CCHA officials would jump to the NCHC or Big Ten depending on the needs of those conferences. However, that is a topic for future years. Let the great deabte about officiating begin as we drop the puck in about 30 days.

  6. Congrats to Miele. My green heart wanted Frattin, but Miele was a very deserving candidate as well.

Lots of Frattin hatred around the country. It amazes me how many people around the country never have made a mistake in their entire lives, and never made a mistake in college. Lots of halos to be handed out! :silly:

    Hobey Baker Award Criteria

    1. Candidates must exhibit strength of character both on and off the ice.

    2. Candidates must contribute to the integrity of the team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game.

    3. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportmanship.

    4. Candidates must comply with all NCAA rules: be full time students in an accredited NCAA college or university; and complete 50% or more of the season.

If I had to point to why Frattin didn't get the award I would say #1 is why. I think his lawnmower tossing incident is something that weighed heavily against him. I respectfully disagree that there was a lot of Frattin hatred. He was a good player.

Congrats to Andy Miele on his Hobey Baker Award!

  7. The West/Midwest side of the bracket is probably the toughest. West I see Boston College coming out of there. Midwest I think Denver will come out of the region just cause Denver is on an upswing and took it to UND in the Championship. Probably another OT or 2OT affair in the region. The East and Northeast regions could be a really tough pick. Midwest and West side winner probably takes the Championship. East region winner makes it to the Championship.

  8. Why the neutral name if you aren't in some way affiliated with the league? Has your team become that big an embarassment for you?

Just because I am a fan of the league doesn't mean that I have to have a specific rooting interest for a specific team does it? Can't I just be a fan of the WCHA without having to have an affiliation or am wrong?

  9. It likely would have been reviewed upon the first stoppage of play. However, UND scored a legitimate goal before the first possible whistle, therefore there was no need to review. Either they counted Cichy's goal and the following goal would have been waved off, or vice versa.

The refs weren't at fault for that one.

It's not so much the refs getting it right as it is from upstairs. In that time they probably had reviewed it upstairs. Had there been a need for a review after the goal to cause the next stoppage that should have already been determined just cause I believe they would have looked at it. Every once and a while at a stoppage you get a horn from the penalty box because they notifed them from upstairs for a review.

  10. That is pretty pathetic for a big time newspaper! I lived in Omaha, and they have a very rabid, loyal hockey fan base. I'm sure the hockey beat writer is pretty embarrased, as he should be. But it's not like UND is a national powerhouse that has won 7 national championships  and its not like UNO is in the same conference

Sioux take 3 hard earned points. 4-4 friday, 5-3 saturday with an empty netter.

If you read that article posted on the mav's message board, he correctly identifies UND as the Fighting Sioux. So I just wonder did the writer miss it when looking at it, did the editor? Sure the headline isn't correct so what. As for bulletin board material, you've gotta be kidding me. If you read the article you will probably have the same questions as to who messed up and didn't catch it.

  11. I am not a veteran myself, as I only recently joined the Army and am currently on my first deployment, but I have always been a huge supporter of veterans and current military personnel.

When I was in high school I joined the CAF (Commemorative Air Force, formerly Confederate Air Force) and helped out with the local chapter where I was at in NC. I was the only one under 20 years old, and 1 of only 2 under 40 in the chapter. There were many veterans there for me to get to know and learn lots of things from, from WW2 to Korea, to Vietnam, Desert Storm, etc. Over the 3 years I was there I heard tons and tons of stories from those times. I may not still be a member, but being with that group led me to attending many airshows a year and now I get to one whenever I can. When I do, i never hesitate to talk to pilots, shake a hand of a vet and ask questions, listen to stories, etc. It is always so interesting. Even just this past spring I was in Texas and chatting with veterans in the CAF from there in TX.

Yeah, I am 24, and sometimes still act like it, and like things 24 year olds like. But I also feel a little more mature, older than my age, because of the people I have surrounded myself with and have given myself the chance to get to know. I am not bragging with that statement, I am saying I appreciate how those veterans have affected me and my personality over the years. Without them, who knows what could have happened.

Veterans play a huge part in our lives, every day, that many people, and I may go as far as to say MOST people, in the US dont even realize. Obviously, thanks to the events of 9/11, the country is behind its troops 100%, even if they dont agree for the cause the military is fighting for. People don't take it out on the troops. Some go as far as to be sorry for the troops that we have to be over here fighting what some would call an unnecessary war. No matter what it is, you would be hard pressed to find someone who actually doesn't like, or appreciate, our troops, and that is a wonderful thing. Being on this side now, I can't imagine what it must have been like in Vietnam, or for the troops when they returned home to a country opposed to them personally. We are a lucky bunch these days to have the support of the country.

To those men and women who have served before, thank you for your service to this country and all the sacrifices that you have made to now be appreciated so much.

To those men and women serving currently, whether in Iraq, Afghanistan, or elsewhere around the globe, or lucky enough to not be deployed at this time and taking care of things on the home front instead, keep up the great work brothers and sisters. No matter what people may think of the wars we are in, it was not our choice to be here, but we fight the good fight nonetheless.

Thanks to all who support the military, especially the veterans.

PFC Hamlin, Justin US Army 2009-current

Thank you for your service to this great nation! Wish you the best. Come home safe! God Bless!

Thank you to all our Veterans who have served and those who are serving currently to protect this great nation.

Many a time we forget in this great nation that we have fought for the freedoms that we have here. To those who have served to protect us we shall be thankful. Every day that our soldiers get up to serve our country is another day we are free. If not for them who knows what would be of this great nation. So again to those Veterans, I thank you for your great service to this nation. May she always be free because of our brave.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

    In Flanders fields.
