  1. I’m not one for moral victories, but it’s nice to see UND play with class.  SDSU’s four second half personal foul penalties says a lot about that team.  I look forward to seeing their annual postseason choke.

  2. Lest I be thought a hypocrite, let me say that I have been at every home football game this year.

In what was arguably one of the biggest home games in recent memory, I was disgusted that today's attendance was 8699. Bubba and this team deserve better, period. UND plays in a SMALL home stadium, and this should have been a tough ticket to get. I fully expected 10,500 today and was blown away at the pitiful attendance. On a positive note, I thought the fans that did bother to show up were fired up.

  3. It's only one game and I don't want to be all doom and gloom, but my excitement and optimism for this season was crushed  tonight. I will continue to support the team all year, but I think tonight proved that this is not a playoff team.

The offense looks like a group Rudolph would have had at Minot State. Studsrud regressed from last year and the O-line didn't give the RBs a chance all night. Add the loss of Clive, and I don't know how this team scores.

BG is a guaranteed loss, and USD just became a MUST WIN.

  4. A guy that sits by me at the Ralph showed me that proposed Blackhawks logo, and told me that was going to be our new logo when we became the Fighting Hawks. After a while, I finally made him understand that his information was incorrect. I wonder how many people are voting for that name based on that logo.

    A lot.

  5. Absolutely, and it's probably closer to 95% of people with season football/basketball tickets also have season hockey tickets or attend when they can.  I rag on the hockey-only crowd on occasion and I've been attending hockey games for 20+ years.  Most of my friends I graduated from UND with are hockey-only and couldn't care less about UND football and basketball.

Absolutely right.  I graduated from UND in 2000, and I only have one other college friend that follows all three of the big sports.  Everyone else that I went to school with and keep in touch with is hockey only, and I don't think this phenomenon is unique to the people that we know.

  6. What I am sick of is the attitude of some (and I emphasis the word some here) Men's Hockey rubes that as long as Men's Hockey is happy, nothing else matters and if everything else goes down the sewer, that is just fine with them. The divide is real, it is not a myth. And it doesn't do our campus any good. Ultimately, all of us should be on the same side and on the same team, whatever the sport is. Don't think for one second that NDSU and other rivals don't use the whole "Hockey is all that matters" mentality when trying to beat us in the recruiting game ("Don't go to UND, all they care about is hockey and no one will care about your team. We'll treat you like royalty here"). The move to Division I in all sports was a waste of time, energy and resources if we continue this "Hockey is all that matters" approach.

AMEN.  Despite what most non-alumni hockey fans (and some alumni as well) think, UND is not a semi-professional hockey club.  It's a university (the FLAGSHIP university of the state no less), and has other athletic teams in addition to men's hockey. Far too many people lose sight of that.  I for one am sick of hearing people discussing the nickname vote in terms of "what looks good on a hockey jersey".  I love UND hockey, but I'm equally passionate about football and other sports at UND, and am proud of the academic accomplishments of the university as well.  I hope that the hockey only crowd refrains from voting, although I recognize their right to vote if they qualify as an alum, season ticket holder, donor, etc.

  7. Frustrating beyond words.  By all rights UND should be 4-0 in the Big Sky going into next week's matchup in Missoula.  Unlike some of the posters who stop caring after these tough losses, I continue to find myself invested in this team and the direction it's heading.  While the excuse doesn't change anything, this is a different game if Reyes plays and if UND has even an average QB.  When you lose a lead late and your opponent knows you can't effectively throw the ball, this is the result you get.  I will continue to support this team, but these last two losses have been hard to swallow, and hurt a lot more than the loss to NDSU, that deep down, we all knew was coming.  The what ifs after these last two late collapses sting.

  8. First Gopher game in the 1995-96 season. Minnesota came in with a 19 game unbeaten streak, and #1 national ranking. I was a freshman at UND and I don't think I ever heard the old Engelstad Arena that loud again. A Vancouver scout at the game told some buddies and me it was the best hockey atmosphere he'd ever seen outside of a Bruins-Habs playoff game. To top it off, UND finished the sweep the next night with a 7-5 comeback win.

  9. While I didn't want to see Bubba as the next Head Coach, I can't believe Faison thinks a guy with NAIA head coaching experience and mediocre results as an FCS coordinator was the answer.

Once again, UND is content to be irrelevant in a sport that isn't hockey. Do you think for a minute that a hockey head coaching search would be handled this way? This would be like hiring a guy who won a couple club hockey national championships as a coach. If I was one of the applicants that didn't get the job, I'd be happy right now. I wouldn't want to be part of a program that clearly isn't serious about winning at the FCS level.

That being said, I'll support the new coach and the team, but I don't see this going well.

  10. If Mussman only beats Drake, Black Hills State, Montana Western and Sioux Falls (which is very possible) he has to go. I don't see this team winning a single conference game, and am having doubts about the Northern Colorado game. Bring in an FBS coordinator with broad recruiting ties. We have no business being in a worse position than USD.

  11. So after our 16-0 win over Drake...lets turn to our next opponent FBS Idaho. Last year we lost 45-0. After seeing our defense stop drake from scoring in the redzone twice and seeing our offense not turnover the ball whats our chances to get our first FBS win?

    + no turnovers

    + stop the pass

    + penalties

I think these 3 are key for us to win the game.

    Final score 35-31 UND!!!

While I think UND should be able to keep it relatively close (no 45-0 this year), I don't share your optimism about winning and/or scoring 35. I guess I don't see the offense I watched score 16 against Drake put up 35, unless it's against Black Hills State. That being said, I hope I'm wrong, as an FBS win would be a HUGE step for this program.

  12. This is an embarrassing schedule. As far as I'm concerned, Cal Poly and USD are the only games worth driving from Fargo to watch. I don't expect multiple FBS opponents, but I find it hard to believe that this is the best competition UND could line up. Anything less than 7-8 wins MUST get Mussman fired. Drake is a non-scholarship program, and Black Hills State, Montana Western and Sioux Falls absolutely must be wins. Throw in a bad Northern Colorado team, and a .500 conference record (hardly a given I know) gives you seven wins. I for one think the current staff should already be gone, because if another poor season necessitates their dismissal, you enter the first Big Sky season with a new staff. I know hockey is and will always be king at UND, but I wish football didn't feel like such an afterthought (to say nothing of basketball).

  13. Disappointing game today, especially since I drove down from Fargo and sat in the cold to watch that debacle. Overall, with the exception of some poor pass defense, the D looked pretty good. On the offensive side of the ball, the Sioux looked like a junior high squad. I continue to be amazed that a college quarterback at ANY level can be as inaccurate as our dynamic duo is. Sadly, we also couldn't run the ball, as any defense facing the Sioux can stack 10 in the box when they don't have any respect for that pathetic passing game.

Mussman has to bring in a junior college QB before next year if they keep him around. Personally, I think he needs to go and UND needs to bring someone in with no ties to UND, that has recruiting ties outside of ND and MN. Until that happens, look for more of the same.

  14. I guess nobody here at Sioux Sports ever had a bad day.....?

Losing to an NAIA school (even a very good one) is not a bad day, it's INEXCUSABLE. UND needs to bring in a coaching staff that can recruit outside of ND and MN. Until UND can do that, it can forget being a real player in FCS.

  15. As far as I'm concerned, before UND hires Mussman or anyone else with ties to the program, they have to look at outside options. NDSU's success since the D-IAA move has been a result of hiring an outsider with recruiting contacts outside of ND and MN. While I hope UND continues to recruit in the area, it also needs to realize that to be successful, it has to have a recruiting presence outside of the region.

The two best Bison players from last year's team were both from Illinois, the kind of players I don't think the current crop of Sioux coaches can land. As much as I respected Dale Lennon, I saw this as a concern before I knew he was leaving, and feel that UND has to at least consider other options at this point.

  16. The Cow College down South is THE enemy, always has been and always will be even if we don't play them in football for another 50 years!

The Gophers have never been our enemy in football. How quickly some of you forget what a true rivalry is, and how much scorn and ridicule the SU faithful heaped on the Sioux football program for so many years, maybe some of you are too young too remember.

I'd rather root for Taliban U than those arrogant SOBs from Fargo.

So if you choose to cheer for the Bison Saturday you can then call yourself a sort of Sioux fan, or a sometimes Sioux fan, or a when it's convenient Sioux fan, but a tried and true bleeds kelly green Sioux fan you can never be.

    Here endeth the lesson.

You're a moron. I am a "tried and true" Sioux fan, but I'm cheering for NDSU. I'm from the state of North Dakota, not Minnesota.

    Taliban U huh? Clever.
