  1. How did they ever get the name Lumberjacks? Isn't a tree in Texas called a cactus ;) LOVE your uniforms though....

(ps - welcome to the board!)

Nacogdoches is located in the piney woods of east Texas...you're thinking of west Texas.

  2. Perhaps Mississippi State wasn't trying too hard to rack up the yardage when they were ahead 34 to 3 in the 3rd quater. Meanwhile, the Sioux were playing catch up and got a lot of their yardage in the end of the 3rd and the 4th quarter.

Freund is probably the best QB in ND, but I hear the SDSU guy is pretty good. I haven't seen enough of either to make that statement, but apparently UND92/96 has.

Actually, we defensed Mississippi State pretty well...they just had the ball forever and ran twice as many plays...we wore down in the second half with those 240 pound tailbacks pounding at us...had our starting QB played, I'm pretty convinced it would have been a 17-10, 24-17 type of game because we had WRs wide open all night...our 5-9 backup kept getting the ball batted down at the line of scrimmage...probably should have played our Baylor transfer more, who led us to our only TD...but he got here right before camp started and was still learning the offense...he's actually more talented than our starter.

North Dakota has a much better passing game than Mississippi State...MSU has better WRs but both QBs are horrible...Danny Freund would EASILY start for them and would make them a much more dangerous offense...you guys could score on a lot of people.

  3. Has nothing to do with being afraid to play anyone...it's a logistical situation in terms of balancing home and road games and not having the budget to take two plane flights to play FCS schools in the same year...the South Dakota home/home was scheduled first the way I understand it...I'd love to see us work something out in the future.

  4. It had the length, barely, but it would have been good. It missed the left upright by 3-6". Very close.

From the pressbox, it appeared just short and left...but our sideline reporter was right behind the goal post and said it was inches left and would probably been good had it been online.

Well stated and I'll leave it at that. Btw, all y'all have a very nice stadium and quality team. Also seem to be well coached. Congrats and best of luck the rest of the way.

Appreciate it...we're getting there...it's obvious North Dakota has a tremendous football program and we hope to reach that level in the near future...thing that impressed me more than anything was the calm demeanor you guys showed down 38-21...you were still running your offense and didn't let the scoreboard dictate anything...often times, you'll see teams panic and start flinging it on every down and end up getting blown out...you guys stayed patient which is a sign of an extremely well-coached and disciplined football team.

  6. Thanks for the compliments. I look forward to our rematch in 2010 at our house and hopefully we'll have a different outcome. Your my darkhorse pick to win the Southland. I think you guys will turn some heads this season in the SLC. Good Luck!

Appreciate the vote of confidence...McNeese is still pretty loaded but we do get them at home...plus we've matched up well with them over the years, except for last year...Sam Houston and UCA are both loaded offensively...we just have to get healthy...we've been in five consecutive, very physical ballgames and are missing several starters and contributors...played without two starting D-linemen tonight, including our best pass rusher...our starting running back is banged up and can barely run though he's giving it a go...missing two offensive linemen, including a starter, and had third go down tonight...we've been playing all year without our best WR and it looks like he's decided to go ahead and take a medical redshirt...I've never seen anything like it...I know you guys were are banged up as well, especially losing a starting O-linemen earlier this week...but that's life in D-I football...nobody feel's sorry for anyone...put the next guy in and let 'er rip!!!

  7. Sultan wrote "All in all it was a good performance. The future is very bright." I agree. Couple things: Big passing plays killed the Sioux. Stop one of those and we win. Intentional grounding call was assisted by the home fans, several seconds after the play was over. We are good up front but not great. I was invited by Ryan Kasowski's parents to meet their son Ryan after the game. He and every player and coach I met were top notch. Anyone who meets these kids and their parents is going to come away impressed. Lastly, a Southeastern fan sought out some Sioux fans after the game because he wanted our coach or athletic director to know how impressed he was with the Sioux players and fans. Good stuff! Our program is in very good hands!

  8. If you're talking dollars then you're wrong UND funded 59.5 scholarships this season and will fund 63 next season. If you're talking talent with a full 63 scholarships of D-1 caliber players and depth then you're probably correct. With the way Bison fans play loose with the facts on this website I just want to make sure your being factual with your criticisms. UND is new to D-I and this game proves that we still have some areas to improve upon and that's what the transition is for. Overall I still believe we're ahead of NDSU at a similar point in the transition. We have the opportunity to be force to be reckoned with in FCS football we just need to give Mussman a couple recruiting classes and then you'll really start to see us break through.

Just wanted to stop in and say the Fighting Sioux have a good football team and fought hard tonight...at the end, I had visions of our game with Central Arkansas last year, and thought we might cough up another one in the last seconds, but I guess '08 is a different year for the Lions...good luck...I'll be a Sioux fan the rest of the way!!!

  9. I was just trying to get a USD fan's perspective to see if the disparity between SLU and USD was as great as you seem to claim. I didn't even disagree with your primary assertion. But it doesn't really matter at this point...we'll find out tomorrow.

    I understand.

  10. I don't think they complain any more than any other fan base. The problem is that fans of both teams are trying to predict the game based on stats and both teams fan bases think the stats are slightly misleading. This leads to what can be seen as excuses.

    Well stated.

  11. Not sure how I was dragged into this discussion, but I'll just say this: one person's "excuse" is another's "mitigating factor." :silly: I think the factors I listed are perfectly accurate. Are they an excuse for UND's near-collapse? Not entirely, but I certainly do believe the the first half was a truer measure of the caliber of team UND is than was the second half.

    I completely agree.

  12. You know I have to agree on this one. I'm not big on excuses, BUT on the other hand a win is a win. All I know is that the guys better come out on play tomorrow night or it won't be pretty. I still think that it'll be close and depending on if we can stop the pass or not. 31-28 final score either way!

Well, it should be a great night for football weather-wise...temps in 70's during the game with low humidity, blue skies and light winds...expect a hard-fought, physical football game.

  13. I also noticed that there are plenty of excuses on AGS.com from SELA fans...what is the deal with that? UND could have beat GVSU last year if we weren't down to our 4th string RB and playing our backup QB! We could have beat Idaho St. last week by more if our secondary didn't have injured members....I would have won the Powerball on Wed if i had only 4 more numbers and the Powerball!

You know, come to think of it, I haven't seen any excuses from North Dakota fans...

Had it not been for the short week to prepare and perhaps some elevation issues, I feel ISU would not have made the rally they did in the second half. It's not to say we would have totally shut them down, but I doubt we would have given up four touchdowns.
    dmksioux

Condsidering it was a very short week to prepare it was a nice win. For whatever reason you see stuff like that happen quite often. A team dominates and builds a huge lead and than a team seems to relax a bit. I don't like to see that happen but it does. Nice win.
    Dagger

Regarding UND, it's hard for me to get too worked up about one poor defensive half of football given the short week of preparation, altitude, injuries in the secondary and somewhat inevitable letdown after building a big lead.
    UND92,96 on AGS board.

Our D was gassed in the 2nd half. Altitude a factor? 4 days rest a factor?
    bincitysioux

On paper, our pass coverage looks vulnerable. But you have to remember that in our first 4 games we built very large leads by halftime, effectively forcing the opposition to throw the ball and abandon the run.
bincitysioux quote on the Lions Den.

Exactly. And while this does not excite me, nor did the result on Sat, it is tempered by the way the game was played. This was not a close game that was won on a couple of plays. It was not like UND's passing game was shut down at all. We could have opened it up and really put the game out of reach. Instead, we seemed bent on running the ball no matter what the outcome. Our run game never got going but we stuck with it. It never really seemed like we were in trouble and I think the players, crowd, and coaches sensed it. It seemed like they were just going through the motions.
    Stromer, from AGS board.
  14. Perhaps. But didn't you essentially say the same thing on AGS about the games against La Tech and Alcorn St.? I mean, that's what football is all about. A call here, a bounce there can change the course of a game.

I'm not saying your wrong or dismissing the fact that your team has underachieved up to this point. But I would like to hear from a South Dakota fan whether the disparity between the two teams was as great as you claim (or at least whether USD's radio announcer thought so, considering most USD fans probably didn't get to see the game).

I don't recall saying anything similar on AGS about La Tech or Alcorn...those were three separate games with three different sets of circumstances...not sure what you meant by that comment.

  15. I'm no great USD football mind, but didn't you guys graduate nearly the entire line from last year? The rushing numbers really haven't been there so far, which could be attributed to some of the competition, the line or the caliber of backs you guys have this year. In any event, I do think UND has a better running game than does USD this year, but that will be either proven or disproven as the season goes along.

We did lose 4 of 5 starters from last year's O-line, but we're WAY BETTER up front this year than last...not even close...the reason our rushing numbers are "not there" is pretty simple...our opponents are loading up the line of scrimmage to stop Jay Lucas...fortunately, we're more equipped to spread it out and throw it and have had great success doing so...eventually teams are going to have to back their safeties up and I'm sure we'll adjust accordingly...of course we've also faced two very good FBS run defenses in Miss State and La Tech.

It's funny because we had this same discussion last year with Central Arkansas fans...we had never played them and their fans kept going by our stats, saying we can't run the ball or stop the run...well, we rushed for 294 yards and held them to 41 yards...football is all about match-ups and it changes week to week.

  16. Agreed--the polls are meaningless at most any level of football. But then again, what else is there to go on if one were picking a game and they know nothing about one of the teams? I will admit that if SE Louisiana were ranked in any of the polls, or hadn't played a close game against a team we're all very familiar with, I'd be more apt to think UND was a clear underdog. Maybe that makes some sense, and maybe it doesn't.

Well, I wouldn't make you a clear underdog under any circumstances, but our game with USD shouldn't have been anywhere near that close...taking nothing away from them, they had a great QB who was a playmaker, and had an excellent game plan, but we should have scored 45 or 50 points...we had penalties that killed drives and had two TDs taken off the board by questionable calls...one of their TD drives was aided by a pass interference which was also questionable...we also played without our best defensive back who makes a big difference in our secondary.

  17. Judging by the anygivensaturday board, people aren't too impressed with the fact that UND has a much higher Sagarin ranking, or is receiving votes in most of the polls, because if you throw out the homer votes SE Louisiana is being picked to win by nearly a 2-to-1 margin.

I won't comment on why some folks on AGS are picking us to win, but as far Sagarin goes, I don't know of anyone who puts much stock in his FCS ratings...especially this early in the season...as far as polls, we lost last week and jumped 10 spots in the Sports Network poll...it's all meaningless...it'll be decided on the field.

  18. Hey, slulionsfan, what is the proper acronym to refer to your team by: SLU, SELU, or SELA? I've seen all three thrown out?

Well, truth be known, we prefer to simply go by "Southeastern" and our administration has discouraged all use of acronyms when it comes to official documents, conversation or use in athletic events...if a news organization needs to use an acronym for space purposes, SLU would be preferred though some, like ESPN, tend to use SELU or SELA to differentiate us from Saint Louis U...SELU is our official web address.

  19. slulionsfan:

I see where Southeastern Louisiana was picked seventh (out of eight teams) in the pre-season Southland Conference polls. In your opinion, was that a reasonable prediction? After the first four weeks of the season, do you think your team has shown to be, in all likelihood, better than the seventh-best team in the conference?

Obviously I'm biased but I thought we should have been at least 4th, but I definitely understand why we were picked 7th...just about everybody in the conference returns their QB plus most of their starters, and we did finish 7th last year...however, we were literally TWO PLAYS from second place, and four of our five conference losses went down to the wire...

We dominated Central Arkansas at home but gave up a punt return TD, a safety and didn't make a 4th and one with two minutes to play in the game that would have iced it...not to mention we were up 16-7 just before the half, but fumbled deep in our territory trying to run out the clock...they scored with about 7 seconds left...against Sam Houston, we got stuffed on a 4th and goal from the one-inch line and probably win that game had we made it...also should have beaten NW State and Texas State...McNeese was the only game where we were thoroughly outplayed...when we got to conference play, we routinely played as many as seven true freshmen on defense at one time.

We've arguably recruited as well anybody in Southland (and FCS for that matter) the last three years and it's finally starting to show on the field...we're still very young with just 12 seniors and 15 juniors and play a lot of freshmen and sophomores in the two deep...we're probably still a year away from really making a push to win the league but I think we'll make good headway this year...I don't like making guarantees but I feel confident we won't finish 7th.
