Yeah, but how would gundy get the garden tilled? ;):D

I'm lookin' out for your rutabagas there gundy.

His rows might end up straighter, and he'd probably think clearly enough to realize that there is no need in this world for rutabagas.

You are correct the change in the high schools and middles schools with use is staggering, again 10% daily users in my area.    While the Anderson article is interesting it is purely anecdotal and opinion in its storyline and conclussions,  and is being recirculated among young athletes via social media, which just adds to the usage and abuse problem.

For political reasons the marijuana epidemic is under the surface, I know some of you will scoff at my choice of words but sometime soon it will become public knowledge.  The Colorado study of emergency room visits shows the real rate of increase and also the 'gateway' part of this.  It is amazing how little media it received compared to what it would have received if it was an emergency room study connecting football and head injuries.  My wife has responded to 2 instances of marijuana 'psychosis' at the local high school this year where the kid needed to be institiutionalized to get their head in order.

It stands to reason that more teens will use marijuana if it is legal. Some of the stigma is removed, it seems like it's safe, and it may be more available.

I think what many of us struggle with is the fact that alcohol is legal and marijuana is not. In 2010 there were nearly 100,000 emergency room visits by people ages 12-20 for a primarily alcohol-related diagnosis. I do understand that prohibition was a failure, but I have no doubt that if alcohol was made illegal and therefore harder to obtain, that number would drop, too.

That's the key item for me, culture.

Legalize it, don't legalize it, harmful, not harmful, I don't care about the debate.

My problem with pot- Guys plan their lives around it, sacrificing time, nutrition, resources, and hang out with their pot crew and seclude themselves.  That's a really crappy foundation to build a championship culture.

If it were legal, I don't think you'd see people secluding themselves or hanging out with their "pot crew" only. I suspect that even though recreational use remains illegal in ND and most other states, using marijuana is not as socially isolating as you are making it out to be. Remember when we were 14, and the kids who drank or smoked cigarettes were on the fringes, judged by most of us to be making poor decisions? Those kids hung out with their "alcohol crew", devoting substantial resources to obtaining alcohol. As we got older, more and more people started drinking underage and it became something acceptable within more and more social circles. I think the same is happening with weed. Not because as teens get older it becomes more acceptable, but just because it has become more acceptable in general.

I think we need to be concerned about this player's arrest, particularly if my thought that marijuana use is not so socially isolating, because that may mean plenty of other players are using it and are at risk for being arrested as well. In the 2014 NCAA survey of athletes, 23.5% of football players reported using marijuana within the previous 12 months. They have data showing that D-III athletes were the most likely to have used overall, but that's not broken down by sport. http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/Substance Use Final Report_FINAL.pdf

I found this article rather enlightening: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2486218-banned-but-bountiful-marijuana-coveted-by-nfl-players-as-invaluable-painkiller

    Here's an excerpt:

"It's at least 60 percent now," Anderson said. "That's bare minimum. That's because players today don't believe in the stigma that older people associate with smoking it. To the younger guys in the league now, smoking weed is a normal thing, like having a beer. Plus, they know that smoking it helps them with the concussions."

That's from an interview with Jamal Anderson, formerly of the Falcons, discussing marijuana use in the NFL.

*edited because I screwed up the number of months in the NCAA usage study.

I'm probably in the minority but anything to do with marijuana doesn't bother me.

I agree with you, however until and if the law changes in North Dakota, people who possess it are going to be charged with crimes. Even if I don't agree with the law, I think there needs to be a hard and fast rule for student athletes, that criminal activity gets you suspended, at a minimum.

Poole's Twitter pic shows a color added license plate that says "faded". Kmon man! Pull your head out of your ass.

Color added, you say? I had to look at his Twitter page to see what state that is. :D

What a coin flip, give me a break, the state legislature is way out of bounds on this, don't they have a full enough of a plate with the financial challenges in this state. This reminds me of the ND Attorney General siouxing the NCAA over the SIOUX name and logo. What other U in the country would have their state attorney general file suit? None, the U would handle it themselves.

UND and NDSU, together should put this to sleep, maybe by permanently awarding it to the school that wins the first MVFC game, since it was awarded at the annual conference game? That would be fair in that the schedule is not out yet and therefore the home team is unknown. The Nickel does not belong in Bismarck, it should be on one of the campuses.

While I agree that the legislature should probably stay out, I think the Heritage Center is probably the best place for it. Trophies like this are designed to be played for forever. Since this one won't be, it would be unfair to either school to make up an arbitrary final game for it. It is part of state history, so the Heritage Center is a great fit for it.

Played softball with a guy that would dislocate it a couple times a year.  Pop it in and go.

You were on a team with me? I'm not even sure I know you! In my experience of countless times dislocating my shoulder, the first time is the worst time. Now when it happens I just have to get into the right position so that gravity helps it slip back in and I'm ready to go, shoulder just as weak as it was at the start of the game.

Anybody else a fan of Bell's Hopslam?  It's a double IPA that is very good.  They only brew it once a year and it is usually released in February.  As of yesterday, JL Beers still has some on tap.  Give it a try if you're an IPA fan.

Hopslam mania has died down quite a bit since they're not the only ones making great double/imperial IPAs but it still one of the best ones around.

I went to K-zoo for the Saturday hockey game against WMU. The Hopslam at Bell's before the game definitely tasted better than it did at a neighborhood bar after the game. It could have been the bitter taste of defeat, but I think freshness matters with Hopslam. As far as others to try, Alaskan Brewing Co. Hopothermia was pretty darn good, but I've not seen it around here lately. Is Alaskan distributed in ND?

I plan on making a small dent in the Zoo beer supply over the weekend.  Any places you would recommend?  We plan on hitting up the Bell's tour on Saturday and the Kalamazoo Beer Exchange for a bit too.

If you have a car and a driver willing to remain sober, I'd recommend coming on up to Grand Rapids for beer tourism. The number of quality breweries here is amazing. Or get out to the lakeshore and go to OddSide in Grand Haven and Saugatuck Brewing in Douglas. If you want more info on GR breweries, I'm happy to help.

  10. This might be the first time in my life I could say I like Ticketmaster. Stole away a couple of minutes to get my 5 tickets via the app, painless. I expected fees to be more than the face value of the ticket, as well. I guess it's a low bar for Ticketmaster to impress me.

  11. Plane tickets are booked, but I guess I have to wait until tomorrow to get game tickets. I am amped. The last football game I went to at the Alerus was about 5 years ago, and it was a snoozefest. I have high hopes for a much better atmosphere.

NCAA Committee needs to huddle and figure out new scearios for keeping UND out of the top 8.

That won't be too hard. "Let's see, we certainly have had the rankings perfect to this point. Since Richmond was #7 and W&M just beat them, W&M must be the 7th best team."

Does anybody know how much it costs for the football team to make a trip?  Let's say a trip to Cal Poly.....what are the costs of something like that.  I have no idea how much a charter is....maybe 75k  10k for hotel, 10k for food, 5k for busing and other misc. would be 100k total.  Not sure if that is anywhere in the ball park or not.  However i was thinking about the NAIA since I grew up in Dickinson and watched the Blue Hawks. First round of the playoffs where usually a bus trip, but as you go further had to be a flight.  I can't imagine most NAIA schools getting more than 4k attendance.  How was the NAIA able to pick up the costs of that?  I remember one year DSU went out to play Central Washington, pretty sure it was them anyway......and John Kitna was their QB.  Dickinson lost of course.   Who knows maybe they did a 20 hour bus ride though and I just don't remember because I probably wasn't caring about that type of thing then.

It's too bad that it has to come down to money in that first round.  I can see needing a minimum amount, and if you meet the minimum amount you get to host....that wouldn't be too bad.  Highest bidder will may be our advantage a few times in the future if we aren't going up against some of the big name schools.  But if we are playing a smaller school sometime and we are seeded 20th and they are 10th, we should really have to go play there and not get the home game just because we can bid more.

To me it seems like the loser of the Sam Houston game should drop out of the top 8 guaranteed, this is their chance to prove they belong in the top 8 and if they lose they are out.  This would move us up, and unless SDSU blows out UNI 45-10 or something I don't think a win against a below .500 team should make you jump somebody else. Especially when you have a common opponent and we beat them and they lost.

Shouldn't we have concern that a close win by SHSU over Central Arkansas will make the committee feel validated in their current rankings? Meaning if SHSU is #5 and they barely beat the #7 team, that's about what they predicted should happen, so why should Central Arkansas drop from #7? This business of ranking is incredibly flawed, with voters at a minimum subconsciously motivated to keep themselves looking good. That's why when a UNI team that was highly ranked to start the year gets beat repeatedly, every team that beats them is now a great team, rather than any admission of "hey, perhaps we missed on this one".

There is a small group of Bison fans that just can't get over the fact that UND did not move up to D1 he same time NDSU did and resent them for not scheduling the Bison after that.  They felt betrayed and wronged for some reason.  I get hating your rival.  But any rational fan of both UND and NDSU can clearly see that having UND and NDSU in the same conference (especially football) is what the majority of fans of both schools want.  It's time to move on and embrace the possibility of having UND and NDSU (as well as SDSU and USD) in the same conference.

Clearly, they have cause to be upset. After all, we broke the "move up pact" that the schools had, right?

As to the football scheduling, my recollection was that losing to them would have had playoff implications in the DII era.
