  1. I'm not trying to make people sound dumb or uninformed, but kinda as teasing me (them knowing I'm pretty vocal about support about Roughriders) I get a lot of my friends who are still in school who send me a picture of that blackhawk logo captioned "pretty good reason to vote for fighting hawks" and it's not facetious. I have quite a few Facebook friends who changed it to their profile picture as well.

My brother works at UND and I talked to him after the first vote.  He said one of the 6 people in his technical maintenance department printed out the fierce fighting hawk logo with the feathers and all 6 thought it was great.  He was going to vote Roughriders, but he thought the "hawk logo was too great to pass up." and changed his mind.  He said all 6 voted for the Hawks.   He is 63,  a longtime season ticket holder and a Sioux sports fan.  Just hasn't followed the whole nickname change as passionately as many have.  I told him there is no way UND will ever use a logo anywhere close to what they were shown, but his group of 6 bought the idea that it would be the logo.  I have to think a high percentage of the Hawk vote is in that camp.  Strong UND and Sioux fans, not dumb, but certainly uninformed.

  2. Why can't it??? Scheels in Fargo hosts NDSU and Force, Century Link in Omaha hosts UNO and Creighton. Whky will never draw more than 1500-2000 fans a game tops...this year way less. Dress the olympic rink up to 2000 seating and make that their home. it's the perfect size.

Why wouldn't you put a sport that can draw 3000-4000 fans a game and potentially more down the road in the REA?? UND suddenly goes from decent mid major facilities to some of the best in the country. We'd be able to compete with MVC schools facilities wise for recruits.

The revenue potential is off the charts for this.....why wouldn't UND and REA look into this. You would now have an awesome bball facility complete with suites video boards and the whole nine yards. Guess what you didn't even have to fundraise for it.

I changed my mind on this after some thought and now think the best thing UND could do moving forward would be to move all games to REA and MAKE MENS BBALL THE SECOND MAIN TENENT AT REA. Someone with vision at REA should look into this. It's not even that big a risk considering men's bball already showed it could draw 4000 in REA in 03. I bet a lot of casual fans would hop on the bandwagon. a couple 1000 extra people at games is a lot of $$$ not to think about.

One thing that you haven't figured in is the cost to convert, and the time needed.  It takes at least 4-6 hours with a good size crew of people.  And then about the same to convert back.  It isn't cheap to make that conversion.  They have 2 layers that go down on the ice, then put together the basketball floor, add the baskets, etc.  If you're putting 10,000 in the seats it is probably worth it.  I don't know if it is financially for 4,000.

When we were in Omaha for the hockey series, we took in the Saturday afternoon Mens basketball game between Creighton and Georgetown. Over 17,000 in attendance at Century Link for the 1:00 pm MBB game. With the Omaha - UND MHockey game at 7:00 pm. We talked to some locals and asked about the conversion. They said the arena staff can make the complete basketball to hockey conversion in 30 minutes.   A multi-purpose facility has to have the equipment and manpower to make the conversion that quickly if they want to schedule both sports a few hours apart. Just saying, no reason it couldn't be done at the REA (except maybe the costs of extra equipment and payroll)

17k for Creighton BBall and 10 or 11k for UNO Hockey (at least against UND) probably makes it more financially feasible than using our BBall numbers.

If a twitter account is accurate, Dev Ferguson is one of them. Our other guess is Casey Young. Young was in a logjam at WR and never beat out anybody ahead of him. We have no idea why Ferguson would quit but to each his own. He is a talented player but had trouble staying on the field. - See more at: http://siouxfb.areavoices.com/2014/10/31/week-9-preview-6-eastern-washington-eagles/#comments

I also find it odd, that a University- the flagship school in North Dakota, which has athletics, has not added any of it's own additional new buildings with the exception of the Indoor Performance Facility...since who knows when.  That does seem a bit odd.  Obviously there was time when the state did build athletic buildings.. Hyslop, Memorial...apparently those days are long past.

    betty-ralph paid

    kraft field-city/park board paid?

I was part of a tour of the Betty and Ralph a few years ago that my employer arranged for some out of town visitors.  Someone asked the tour guide how the Betty was paid for.   She said it is commom mis-perception that Ralph or the REA paid for the Betty.   She said it wasn't true and UND took a loan of over 7 million and was paying off the Betty out of athletic department revenues. It was named in honor of Betty, but the Engelstad family wasn't involved in paying for it.   I think if you look back, even in this forum, you'll see that is the case.

Not sure on whose property the Betty sits...UND or REA.  But, for the expense of the building at least, the Betty was a UND project.

  5. Not wanting to get into a pissing match with you guys, however I kind of want to throw my $.02 in on a few things I've read in this thread. Didn't read the whole thread, because frankly I get tired of seeing trolls get so many replies from people when they could simply be ignored. Some of the stuff that fans of each fan base throw out there is completely ridiculous sometimes and I think people just say those things for the sake of pissing each other off.

I'm gonna be the first to say that apparently Weber St isn't as good of a team as maybe a lot of us Bison fans thought they were. But on that Saturday, they played some inspired football and gave us more of a challenge than we thought they would. Does anyone here understand the concept of matchups in sports? How one team matches up with a team and can be totally different than how they match up against another. I think that game was a good example of that. I also don't believe in the common opponent comparison for this reason. At the end of the day, for me, it really only matters how many wins and losses a team ends up with.

I think it was in this thread that I noticed the FBS/Big10 schedule come up and how NDSU would fare against that level of competition. I'm not going to be the NDSU fan that says we'd roll everyone, bring on 'bama, etc etc. First, it's not going to happen anytime soon, so to speculate how we'd do is a waste of time. Do I think we'd be competitive with several FBS schools if we had the same amount of scholorships, had an equal amount of home and away games, and had the advantage at that point to out recruit any FCS schools in the area (and maybe a few FBS schools too?)? Absolutely. I grow tired of people minimizing our FBS wins (all road wins) and follow it up with this argument about how we couldn't handle the full Big12/10 etc conference.

I'm bringing up this last subject again because any fan of UND that is competant should be able to realize that NDSU has owned the states of NDSU, Minnesota, and SD in recruiting the last several years. Does that mean we've gotten everyone we wanted? No. Does it mean we've lost a battle or two to some other MVFC or BigSky schools? Sure. If a kid is offered a partial versus a full and there are other things to consider like playing time, doesn't it make sense to pick a certain school over the other? Yes.

Just wanted to throw in my opinion, and it was not intended to be trollish at all, sorry if a few of you perceive it that way. I'm all for some friendly banter and good football discussion so if there's something I said that rubs you the wrong way, fine, let me know and we can talk about it like adults. And please don't throw the usual "Why are you even here? This is a UND site." because I've been here for awhile and have supported your hockey program a lot. And we have renewed the rivalry game sort of so there's that.

And most UND fans are "competent" enough to know about the states of SD and MN. Just maybe not the state of NDSU?

Also, if you "grow tired" of people on a UND site not giving you the love you need, even though you are such an innocent non-troll simply looking for some friendly banter, my suggestion would be for you to stay in the state of NDSU, where I'm sure you can find it.

  6. An update on the Fleet Farm.

I just talked to my friend at the utility that originally told me about Fleet Farm coming to GF.   He said after they provided the study to Fleet Farm on how they would serve them along with the estimated costs involved for a new Grand Forks store, months went by without hearing much. He said they finally talked to Fleet Farm HQ 2 months ago and were told they no longer have plans for building in Grand Forks. (Fleet Farm has since announced for Duluth - Hermantown as their next build)

Interestingly, for those who talked about the Mills family and Home of Economy handshake deal years ago.......my friend says that since they got the word on Fleet Farm, they were asked to basically do the same thing for the Home of Economy.   He said HOE is planning to build a new, large store on the south end of GF and turn the north end location into staging and storage area for their stores.  So, maybe that "family agreement" is still in effect.

If this rumor doesn't come true I'll stop listening to my him  ???

  7. Come on, only my wife can call me completely wrong.   ;)   I probably should have said "in comparison to Tim and Pat, Dan had almost no local connection".

At the time those final 3 were interviewed, Tim and Pat had been living and working in Grand Forks for over 30 years.  Doing play by play of UND games, doing UND coach's shows, reporting on UND sports, all while residing in Grand Forks as UND guys.  For over 3 decades.  Meanwhile, Dan was a Fargo guy.   Had never lived in Grand Forks before.   Had never done a UND coach's show.  Had way less overall colllege sports play by play experience than the other 2.   That's what surprised Pat when he lost out on the job.

What does "LOCAL input from the community" even mean?   Did Midco poll 20 people?   100 people?   The local media and UND folks I know, consider Dan a downgrade from Pat in both his play by play call and also in terms of UND knowledge.    And, most local fans I've talked to still consider Dan both a "Fargo guy" and a downgrade.

Midco made a business decision hiring Dan, all I was saying was I surprised by it, and so was Pat.   Maybe you care to explain what  "LOCAL input from the community" means and how that factored into hiring a Fargo guy over long term, local UND guys.

  8. suffice it to say i know PS was interviewed for the job and was rejected - and not because of his "sales abilities"

Agreed............  I worked with Pat for his first 12 years at 'DAZ.   He told me that he, Hammer and Tim Hennessy were the final 3 for the Midco job at the time.  He couldn't understand why 2 local, "UND guys" were bypassed  for a Fargo guy.  I told him it was because a South Dakota based company didn't understand or care about the importance of a local connection.

On another note, Rob Horken isn't be the one making any decision about eliminating newscasts, or any future one about dropping local sports.  Those type of decisions always have and always will be made in Fargo, despite resistance from WDAZ management.  Rob just has the fun job of delivering the news to people and carrying out the orders.

Good Luck in the new job Pat!

Saskatoon newspaper article hoping for Weston back to the Riders.

"Provided that Dressler clears NFL waivers, there will be a frantic bidding war for his services. Any CFL general manager who does not contact Dressler's agent and make a lucrative offer should quickly become a former CFL general manager. But nobody should be more interested in Dressler than Roughriders vice-president of football operations and general manager Brendan Taman, who is left without an option in this case. Sign Dressler. Period."

  10. It just kind of irks me whenever Huff gets thrown under the bus whenever he has a bad game. He's the best player to come through here in over decade, and probably one of the best we've ever had here. Every player has limiting factors, and he is no exception. I've seen several other players on numerous occaisons on this year's team and over the course of the last four years lose their minds out there on the floor as well. I don't think we are going to be better next season because Huff, or Anderson or Webb for that matter won't be on the squad anymore.

    Agree.....

The difference for the ladies this year was the huge upgrade at the guard position from the previous year. Similar to what the Men needed (and still need) on the inside. I thought every BSC team had at least one or 2 decent, blue collar big men. Guys who weren't fancy but were physically solid and worked hard at their role of rebounding, defense and basic big man-back-to-the-basket moves. Similar to what Brekke gave us....and I went into the season hoping that Calc and Salmonson could be those types of players. I was amazed at how little they brought. They both continually got out-physicalled and seemed lost on defense and boxing out. I hate to say it, but I don't think either of them are legitimate D1 big men.

If you add Traylor, Calcaterra and Salmonson's season rebounding totals together, Huff by himself had about 20 more than those 3 "bigs" combined. I know some on here like to call out Huff. He was our scoring leader, our rebounding leader and our steals leader, playing hard defense and putting his light frame up against much bigger people on the boards all year. The tragedy of this Senior class was we couldn't put a capable big man out there much of the time. It sure showed once again last night.

  11. I thought this was very noticeable during the game against NAU. He started the second half but got taken out with about 12-15 minutes remaining in the game (and he didn't come back in if I remember correctly).

a guy sitting in front of me at the game always has his radio headset on. I asked him late in the game about Huff and he said he got dinged and they were worried about a possible concussion. At least that was the speculation.

  12. The storm is supposed to be pretty much through by 6 pm, so if Montana is in town they can probably play the game.

Thursday's game against Montana on as scheduled

GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- Thursday's women's basketball game with Montana scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center is on as planned. Winter weather and potentially dangerous travel conditions are possible. Fans are encouraged to use caution in traveling.

The game can be seen live on UND Insider and WatchBigSky.com or you can listen on 1440-AM (Grand Forks) or 970-AM (Fargo).

  13. If you are talking about mills That's odd. The family that runs fleet farm I thought had an agreement with hoe that they would never come into gf and compete with them.

I heard it from a couple of sources that insist preparations are in the works, because they are involved with them.....

Jean K. was 93 yrs old when she passed away almost 6 years ago..............The Mills family is on at least the 3rd generation of management. I don't know how much an urban legend handshake agreement from decades ago matters in 2014.

  14. I heard this from a friend who works for one of the local utilities. He says they are doing design work for providing service to a new Fleet Farm store to be built near the new WalMart on Hwy 2 West.

He said it's also 90% certain a Home Depot is going in across Hwy 2 to the north from those 2 stores. Going to be nice additions to the north side of town.

  15. Great post. To tie this to Oxbow's thought on timing, which I agree with..............Faison could have asked anyone who was around when Bubba was here and probably asked anyone at Duluth and the way everyone described Bubba would have been consistent. And it would have all been positive. So at least in terms of Bubba, he could have done his own work during the wait period and even if he had to narrow it down to 9, Bubba could have been named shortly after.

I have no problem with Bubba being the guy. He will be a solid head coach with a plan. The key to me is still the funding of assistant coaches and the staff he puts in place.

Completely agree. The key is what we get as a staff as a whole and its good to hear the AD is starting to step up, finally.

Folks on here have accused Faison of knowing in October he was going to fire Mussman but still being unprepared for the process of hiring a new staff. Or, that he was going to fire him earlier but the USD game stopped that. I don’t think he had any desire to fire Mussman until being pressured late this year. Mainly, because any change in staff would automatically cause a major increase in overall football staffing costs…..something he clearly has wanted to avoid.

In my opinion he handcuffed Mussman going into the Big Sky. Going into the BSC, and even between year 1 and 2 Faison had the opportunity to show a commitment to raising the level of UND football by having the Athletic Dept. step up and bring in some experienced, outside staff for some of the open positions. The boys at SFI said Mussman had carte blanch to hire any assistants he wanted under Faison, in every way except for salary. No offense to Luke or Josh, but I have to think Mussman had far more experienced options, if it wasn’t for the dollars needed, to get more seasoned coordinators.

Last fall we started out with 2 first time coordinators, 2 line coaches in their 1st or 2nd year, a 1st year running back coach, a special teams coach in his first year as ST coordinator, 1st year inside LB coach, 2nd year CB coach, etc. Mussman may have had carte blanch from Faison, but it’s clear the purse strings were pretty tight over Faison’s tenure. You can get by with a new coach here and there, but when the majority of the coaches are figuring out how to do their new job it’s not a good situation.

Now, when Faison started feeling the heat, he magically finds way more dollars for both the new head coach, but more importantly for his new staff. (I never heard reports of Mussman being unhappy with his own compensation, I did hear he was unhappy with the dollars available for staff). If reports are correct, I’m expecting about a triple increase in football staff costs in one year.

Many on here like to say Mussman set UND football back, in my opinion he did what he could with how he supported. Rather, I tend to believe that Faison’s going cheap on football set things back. If he’s finding all this money now, he should have been able to have done that 2 or more years ago too, at least incrementally. I know many will say great young coaches can be successful in new positions, but they typically have other veteran coaches to learn from. Our young guys were overwhelmed at times this year and it showed on the field.

I hope Faison spends some serious UND money and hits a home run with a great new staff. I just wish he had invested some of that a few years ago.
