  1. i have a question for you about mattson... when the u-18 was here, he got very little playing time, mostly pp and some pk also. was is just that he was younger and there were guys ahead of him, or does he still have things to work on before he is wcha ready? it seemed he could put on some weight yet, but that is true of most 17 and 18 year olds. just wondering, especially since he didn't get drafted. from what i saw of him, he is a very good skater, and good with the puck.

From what I've always understood is that his strength is special teams. They did have eight defenseman this year so as for playing time that night, who knows what the situation was but he still played in 63 games this year for the NTDP. He was second in defenseman scoring at the 18U worlds behind Cam Fowler, who is one of if not the best North American defenseman for his age group. He was also second in defenseman scoring for the NTDP all season, once again behind Cam Fowler. He has the natural ability, good skater and good hands. He probably still has some work to do so he'll get even more of a chance to improve in the USHL this year. Also, he didn't get drafted because he wasn't eligible.

  2. Yep they do throw em in the WHL but I don't think that is the only reason he is playing in the WHL.

It may be a fighting league, but it still produces a good crop of talent. I don't want to get into a major junior vs. college discussion, but the major junior route can be a very good route for a player to take (the numbers speak for themselves), especially over going to UAA.

  3. To note that link, his 5 points put him at 40th of all the players at the camp.

The points are not necessarily reflective of player ability since these teams are randomly assembled. It's hard to judge how good a player did unless you were there. He was in the all star game, so he was one of the top players in that regard. I guess the ultimate judgement will be if he makes the team that goes overseas.

  4. i heard runblings of these 2 issues with uaa and cc. i see moore going major junior. would be a huge loss for cc. hell of a player and 1st rd pick this last june

    per western blog

Alaska-Anchorage recruit Spencer Bennett has signed with the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL. Bennett was recently drafted in the 5th round of the NHL Draft by the Calgary Flames.

Meanwhile, Colorado College recruit John Moore says he is still undecided about whether or not he will play next season at Colorado College.

I can't blame Bennett, I would much rather play in the WHL than play at Anchorage.

  5. not sure if forborts team will be doing more play vs d3 and d1 teams though and maybe the other team doing the ushl schedule. i guess im not sure as ive heard both

I believe it is the 17U team that is playing in the USHL, as it is an upgrade from the NAHL. It makes more sense for a team of 16-17 year olds to play in the USHL, since the NAHL is a tier 2 league of 19-20-21 year olds. The 18U team is still playing the d1 and international schedule with select dates of USHL games.

The guy before with the can't skate label was Brandon Bochenski....17 goals & 21 assists for 38 points as a freshman.

Jonathan Toews, who had all the tools, had a 22 & 17 line for 39 points as a freshman and he was one of the most celebrated freshmen we've ever had.

So if Cichy accumulates anything less than 17 & 21 for 38 points this winter, will that make him a failure? :glare:

I think Cichy will be a very good college hockey player, but what hurts his status as an NHLer is his size and speed. It's like the Josh Birkholz comparison earlier. Birkholz didn't have as good of a year as Cichy did in the USHL, but Birkholz has the natural build to be an NHL type player, and as a result he was drafted higher. The point is is that the NHL is looking for a certain type of player and just because you're a good college player doesn't mean you fit the NHL prototype.

  6. Is Samuelsson that big of a loss?

I also am not sold on Leino either. I'd go for Hudler.

As for Abdelkader, he did ok in the playoffs. I say let him have a shot.

Nevertheless, back to the Hawks: Uh... what are they going to do in net? Pray Huet doesn't sieve out every game and turn it over to Antii Niemi when he inevitably does?

They might not have a choice. The older goaltenders aren't #1 caliber (well... maybe Biron is worth looking at... but he was mediocre) and all the young talent out there are just that: talent. None of them are proven at the NHL level.

Well, they do have Hossa wrapped up for 12 years. I'm curious though... how long do they have Huet wrapped up for? He's not tradeable due to his salary, I'm sure (not that anyone would take him). Tallon is still the best GM in Chicago (IMO), but Huet's signing is much more like that of something Hendry would do for the Cubs (take a shot at the dark at a one year wonder and hope for the best) than Tallon has done in the past.

Babcock stated at the end of the season that Abdelkader will start the year in Grand Rapids. I don't disagree on Samuelsson either. If they can sign Hudler and Leino, this means they bring back 11 fowards so they'll probably go out and get a bargain player.

  7. Precisely.

This was a desperation move by the Hawks to get Hossa away from Detroit. All signs pointed to Hossa wanting to stay in Detroit until this came about.

Also, I think this means that Havlat isn't staying in Chicago. In fact, I'm sure of it.

There are also some RFAs and UFA youth like Brouwer that are probably gone now too.

As for Toews and Kane, I think one of them is gone at the end of their contract years simply due to the money. I think Kane will be the one to go based on the potential for him to be a big scorer.

In any case, I would have spent money on a goaltender that doesn't suck like Huet. I know that Khabibulin is gone now. Seriously, Huet will not take them to the Finals regardless of how good they are next year.

No it wasn't. Hossa wanted to stay in Detroit but Holland didn't give him the price he wanted. Hossa's agent made it clear that they wanted at least $6 million a year and because of cap space Detroit only offered $4-5 million a year. In fact it was in March that Holland offered Hossa a $4-5 million a year deal, but when he turned that down Holland locked Franzen instead. In fact the Wings are so tight on cap space that they won't be able to sign Samuelsson either. If they can get through the free agency by retaining Hudler and Leino and maybe a grinder at a bargain until Abdelkader is ready then it was a good offseason.

  8. People who don't think we're getting blue chippers need to look at next years class...possible first round picks in 2010 Nick Mattson, Derek Forbort, Bredan O'donnell and Michael Parks will be drafted too

I don't consider O'Donnell and Parks to be blue chip recruits yet....only time will tell. But you're definetly right about Mattson and Forbort.
