  1. Put it this way: That is not an option. UND has to play and win with what it has. Most programs would give anything to have two No. 1 NHL drafts at forward and two No. 1 NHL drafts on defense. But apparently I'm supposed to believe that the only way the Sioux could expect to be successful this season was if they brought in freshmen who were clones of Smaby, Zajac, Stafford, Spirko and Parise.

Was that a lot of talent to lose? Yes it was. Is it reasonable to expect that such players can be replaced during the course of one season with "impact" freshmen? No it's not.

It's perposterous to think that way because it so seldom happens. Don't tell me that because the Gophers' freshmen have been successful this season that it proves anything. Right now, they are the exception to the rule. And if they fizzle out in the playoffs like Minnesota's highly regarded recruiting class of last season (it was No. 1 in the nation, right?), what they accomplished in the first half of the season won't mean much, will it?

I realize that this is the conventional wisdom around here, but there are many real-life examples to prove it wrong.

So the season has ended. Thanks for clearing that up.

The problem here is that everything is relative. For example, one of our favorite Gopher posters claimed that UND's class of 2001 was a bust. But who defines that? How do you define it?

That was the class that helped win a WCHA championship in 03-04 and might well have won a national title that season if not for Adam Berkhoel's stonewall performance at the NCAA West Regional. By almost any standard, it was one of the best teams UND ever put on the ice.

The next season, those seniors were the heart and soul of a team that scratched and clawed its way into the playoffs and played in the national championship game, despite some very trying circumstances. Is it fair to label that class a bust or a group of underachievers because they never won a national title? I don't think so.

Now, hypothetically speaking, what if Michael Forney gets 100 percent healthy over the Christmas break and begins contributing offensively as expected? What if Chris VandeVelde continues to improve and starts chipping in goals here and there? What if Chay Genoway continues to improve and becomes this season's Ryan Duncan? What if Darcy Zajac ends up scoring around the same number of goals this season that his brother did last season? What if the Sioux make it to the Frozen Four for the third straight year because Anthony Grieco does an imitation of Aaron Schweitzer in 1997? What if Forney scores the game-winning goal in overtime in the national championship game, giving UND its eighth NCAA title?

If that happens, will you and buckseive be back here telling us that this year's freshman class was one of the worst in recent years?

I'm not claiming that my hypothetical scenario will happen. I simply don't know. Now, pay attention, because here's my main point:

    YOU DON'T EITHER!

There's a lot of hockey left to be played. Young players with potential still have time to play up to their potential. Joe Finley can still become a physical force. Brian Lee can begin playing the way we all know he's capable of playing. Getting T.J. Oshie and Jonathan Towes back to 100 percent might be all it takes to get the team back on track.

There's also time for hot goalies to cool off and hot teams to burn out. So don't tell me with more than half a season to play that you know anything for certain because you don't.

I'm sorry - you are right - I don't know the 06 class is weak.

I also don't know where the 50+ goals are going to come from that we lost from last year's team.

I also don't know where the big, shutdown defenseman you play against the other teams #1 line is.

I also don't know where the tough as nails senior leader is.

You are right - I just don't know.

  2. I can't admit it because...now pay attention...

    I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S TRUE!

Do you not understand the idea that most recruits play for more than half a season? Do you not understand that every player isn't an instant success his freshman season? Do you not understand that there's no way you can say such a thing about a highly regarded recruit like Michael Forney who hasn't been at 100 percent for most of the season?

When this season is done, then you can more accurately judge the impact of this freshman class. And when their careers are done at UND, you can say with great certainty how weak or how strong this particular class was. But until then, there's no way you can claim that your opinion is objective.

Put it this way - would you trade the play of any freshman this year for the player's we lost last year?

Of course you wouldn't. Every year, an elite college hockey team will be losing players and better be ready to replace them with more elite players - if that doesn't happen the team will not be as good.

I don't see why this is so complicated - and why we can't admit the 06 class is one of the weakest UND has brought in recent years.

The next 2 years look better - and they have to be.

  3. the difference between UND and those other schools you listed is that the role players that UND brings in are much better than the role players lower wcha teams have. UND is slated to have a lot of blue chip recruits over the next two years. that means there will be constant turnover, which is where the role players who were brought in over the past two years will excel.

The main point is that, because we don't know how long the blue chipper's are going to stay, we need to bring some in EVERY year - we did not in 06 and it shows.

  4. a lot of the players that were picked up during the offseason are four year players. they are the type that will stick around and by seniors be amazing leaders and amazing hockey players. i'd take this year's class of solid freshman over a class with two first rounders. with the high draft picks, you've got one, maybe two years to get a championship out of their talent. with four year players, you have four years to get a championship out of their talent and leadership.

We did not lose role players from last year's team (save Perpich) - all the rest left early to play AHL/NHL/Europe - which means we lost skill/talent that we did not replace with the 06 class.

Because we bring in so many high end players that will leave early, we can't afford to miss a year.

This class is probably in the middle of the pack in the league, which is where we will probably end up at the end of the season.

  5. Let me vent and share my frustration also. it is obvious that this team has trouble in all areas - timely scoring, defense, goaltending, will to win, intensity, mental mistakes. My feeling is that the ultimate responsibility is with the coaches. When Blais was here, players knew that if they came to UND with talent they would leave as players in the NHL sense of the word. Thjat's not happening now. Does anyone think that Finley, Lee, Lameraux, Toews, Oshie, etc are playing better this year. Almost no one is developing. We are playing much worse as a team than in the past. In addition, we were out-recruited this year. I agree with other posters that it is a mystery as to why we can't get a stud goalie in here. It is painful to watch us get out-hit in our own arena. Hakstol was basically anointed as coach - It's time for him to show us what he's got. I will not be happy until we are competing with the Gophers. Blais would never allow this type of play without kicking some but. We need a wake-up call soon.

Let's face it - this team lost a lot of talent/character from last year (stafford, zajac, smaby, spirko, perpich, parise) and reloaded with a very weak recruiting class.

We aren't as good as last year's team - and last year we were only 16-12 in the league.

I sure hope we recruit better in 07 and 08

  6. They should have taken Finley out, why sit radke who is the teams best skating and best puckhandling defenseman (Chorney is steady and more realiable but Radke is more skilled). I like Genoway at D, he played well from the little i saw and he handles the puck with alot of poise. I only saw about 5 minutes of the game and none of the goals so I can't really comment much on the game but judging from the box score it looks like the Oshie,Porter, Watkins line struggled. Also looks like UND was the better team in the 3rd period, thats usaully a good sign heading into the next game.

What are you smoking - Choney is playing the best of any D right now - he's the quickest, smartest with the puck and plays his position. His only minus is his size, but he is still willing to be physical when needed.

Chorney will be playing in the show before Radke, no doubt about it.

  7. teams don't choose their conference schedule... but they do have a weak tournament. keep in mind, we too have a weak tournament, play a normall weak mtu and then finish it off with cc.

I'm sure the teams do have some say on dates - MN obviously requests some Sunday afternoon home games - most teams also schedule around final exams as well.

  8. Yeah, I remember Dave Colborne. He was from Calgary and had a great start to his career and then came the eligibility problem. Can't remember exactly what the issue was though.

Too much Major Jr playing time in Canada

  9. Just wanted to address the impact of the WJC on the Sioux schedule.

December 8-9 UND, with a full squad, hosts Wisconsin.

December 10 Canadian Junior Camp opens; Toews trades his Sioux logo for the Maple Leaf.

December 15-16 UND, without Toews, hosts MTU. Will UND's presumed US Junior Team members be available? I think so, but am not sure when the players report.

December ?? US players report to the US team. Chorney and Lee will likely be on the team.

December 26 WJC begins in Sweden.

December 29-30 Dartmouth tournament; Sioux without Toews, Lee and Chorney.

January 5 WJC gold medal game

January 5-6 UND, still without Toews, Lee and Chorney, visits CC.

January 12-13 UAA visits a fully-equipped UND team.

    ---------------------------------

Assuming Lee and Chorney make the US team, and Toews the Canadian team, what will the Sioux look like in their absence?

Defense: Radke, Bina, Jones, Finley, Foyt, Genoway

Forwards: If Genoway moves to defense, then you need to replace Toews and Genoway from their line, leaving only Duncan. I assume you pair Oshie and Duncan, and let the rest fall into place after that.

It's interesting to look at UMinn's schedule over the same time period.

They play at MTech on 12/8-9, host their own tournament vs. Ala-Hunstville/Ferris/UMass on 12/29-30 and have a away/home series with Mankato on 1/5-7.

It looks like they set up a good schedule around the WJT - should we be doing the same?

  10. And Hakstol and Eades are proving all along just how good a recruiter they are. But could someone please clarify some things?

Is it Eades that was instrumental with recruiting Oshie? Wasn't it Eades who also convinced Bruneteau to commit to UND? Or were these two both Hakstol's doing?

Weren't Cichy and Kristo at the USA Select camp Eades was coaching at?

  11. I think Bobby is human. Even so Toews and Oshie together could lite him up get his feet moving and play smart. Our team doe shave to stay out of the box and stop taking knuckle headed penatlies.

Bobby was like swiss cheese at the Final 5 last year. He is still looking for his jock in the rafters of the X after RD's goal.

  12. Fellow Sioux Fans -- Calm Down re: Gophers must play on Friday night at the Final 5 for TV ratings.

Don't you realize that when the Sioux play in the afternoon semi-final game on Friday, they get 8+ hours more rest than the Gophers for the title game, if the Gophers actually win.

Why it may hurt our feelings the Gophers get all the TV attention, it's a better situation for the team to play Fri afternoon than Fri evening.

  13. Complete story from Chicago Trib

    Arbitrator awards Calder $2.95 million

    Published July 28, 2006

An arbitrator awarded Blackhawks left wing Kyle Calder a one-year contract worth $2.95 million Thursday.
The salary cap for this season in the National Hockey League is $44 million.

With about $6 million left in cap space and Ruutu still unsigned, the Hawks may allow first-round draft pick Jonathan Toews to return to the University of North Dakota this season rather than sign him.

  14. I think this is a pretty big loss for us. We really need to start getting some 07 committments and Wilson was one of the top recruits for 07 and one of which I thought we had a great chance at landing. Hopefully, we can get some other big time recruits to join Trupp, Lapointe and Marto for 07.

Are there any "big time" recruits left for 07? The 07 lists for Mich/MN/Wisc are pretty full.

  15. If I was Motzko I'd probably try this angle on a Marvin/Christian prospect:

Ok, your family is a huge part of the UND legacy. Cal pretty much started the program and other family has played there. Dave and Billy played for UND as well as Olympic teams, etc. The Marvin and Christian names will always be connected with UND. It's understandable if you want to be a part of that.

But you have the opportunity to connect those storied family names to the ascendance of another program. A program started by the legendary Herb Brooks, that has seen a hint of success but has really struggled recently. Your name could be connected with revitalizing this program. And 50 years from now, the Marvin/Christian name will be connected with the development and emergence of 2 highly successful hockey programs. You could be responsible for multiplying the level of respect for what your families have contributed to hockey in this area.

You have to decide what's more exciting to you. Do you want to step into a comfortable environment under the umbrella of your ancestors? Or do you want to step out take your family name to a new level.

You have my number. Call me and let me know.

FYI Billy did not play at UND.

  16. I just read/watched that chat...not really that interesting. Sounds like they put alot of faith in their goalie, and think Parise is a great goalie too.

Mark (Fargo): Hey Chris, A rivalry has developed between North Dakota and BC especially since they usually only play on the big stage of the NCAA playoffs. What are your thoughts on BC playing North Dakota in the Frozen Four for the third time in the last 6 years, twice in the final?

Chris Collins: We were talking about that as a team yesterday. It seems like if we want a chance at the National Championship, it has to go through North Dakota. They are a storied program and they must feel the same way we do. Coach York was just saying this to us, so it is funny that you should ask this. It is two great programs who always are in the championship picture. I'm just happy we didn't play in the Regional.

Sounds like he remembers what happened last year all too well.

  17. Like I said in earlier posts, I have had all the Fox channels all year on Dishnetwork and have watched a lot of college hockey in all parts of the country this year. In MY experience, I will say this in general...

WCHA = inconsistent calling of penalites

HEA/ECAC/Everyone else = consistent calling of penalties and by the book (i.e. checking from behind is checking from behind whether the person gets hurt or not and cross-checking near the boards is cross-checking and not checking from behind)

All in all, and with UND's style of play, I think that we will get more penalties for interference and hooking and calls like that rather than our normal checking from behind and slashing and others that have seemed to haunt us. That being said, I think our D will be more able to play D whereas our smaller forwards had better use their legs more and their sticks less... less they be in the box!

No team is as cheap/dirty as Mich, with Wisc a close second. Jack Johnson will be in the box more than Matt Greene was last year.

As for MN, we can force their overrated D to take penalties if we go hard with our forecheck and force them to reach/hook/slash/hold.

  18. Danny is property of the Minnesota Wild and Ryan is property of Philly.

Let's be honest - we would take both of them on our team in a heart beat. They are both talented and play hard all the time, unlike some of the other prima donna's on their team.

  19. Thanks to both of you for the videos! Not being able to see the games, it was awesome to see some highlights...

I watched the game Sat. but missed the intermission interview with Tony Esposito. The Fox announcers referenced it later in the game, saying Espo dissed A. LaPanta. What did I miss?

  20. Questions:

    - What would it take for DU to make the NCAA tournament after losing to UMD?

    - What would it take for CC to miss the NCAA tournament?

    - How outlandish of a scenario would it take for UND to become a #1 regional seed?

Go to College Hockey News and play with "You are the Committe"

    You are the Committee

If the Sioux win the F5 and Mich. State and Harvard stumble, I think UND can get to #5 seed overall. If the Sioux could get a #5-6 overall seed, bracket integrity would force MN to another region, and perhaps send Miami to GF.

    Nice.
