  1. And like it or not, the price of energy is directly tied to the price of oil. When oil prices go up, all energy costs go up.

Yeah I know. It's just frustrating considering how underfunded salaries and some departments are. It's a good thing it was a mild winter or we'd be looking at 12-15% increase

  2. Its not that I don't share the same worries, but I think the concern with a watered down DII level is greatly exagerated. For instance, do you want to go into DIAA and be a nobody or have an opportunity to compete for championships in your division. Also, look what the move to DIAA has done for NDSU...How many kids from ND or Minnesota do you see on the teams - remember when it was fun to identify the basketball players on both teams as being from Minnesota or North Dakota...Now the tradition is bringing in JUCO transfers who end up playing for two seasons before they are let go for academic reasons. I think our strength is in the traditions we have followed in the past and not the opportunity to beat the Wisconsin men's basketball team on a single night when so many will soon forget it.....I'd rather have our names etched on a trophy or logged into the record books with pride instead of disbelief.

You make some good points, but NDSU is going to have a much better shot at a lot of local talent if they decide to recruit them. Maybe not with women's bball right now, because of how competitive they are right now, but overall I think most kids would want to try at competing at the highest level they can.

Like bin said, it's not about competing with big institutions as it is like institutions. I've been cautious about DII vs. DI in the past, but I think it's time to join our peers.

  3. While I'm sure there are some in the student body that would push for raising fees just because being DI is something they'd believe in, I don't think many students are happy with the rate tuition has gone up the last few years (a 9% increase just for heating?!).

My guess is student body would raise fees, but only slightly ($25-50).

  4. If UND were to make the move up, officials hope the university will successfully move into a conference within a year.
"Creating a new conference is something that's not going to be tough," Haskins said, noting that a few colleges in the area either recently have moved up or are considering it.

Does anyone else find these remarks foolish? I can't imagine trying to start up a conference "something that's not going to be tough," or getting into a conference much easier. Granted, officials are going to put an optimistic view out there or might know more than we do, but those remarks seem a bit much considering NDSU's situation so far.

  5. As a Denver Fan, lacrosse is turning into a huge spring hit on campus. After only seven years at the D-I level, the Pioneers are ranked #12 in the nation. There are sellout crowds at $9 per ticket, and FSN-RM is picking up TV games. There are now 50 high schools in Colorado playing the game, and DU no longer must recruit all east coast atheltes. Today, DU is bringing Canadians, Colroadans, Texans, etc. The new stadium lax is already too small, and they are thinking about building more seats to accomodate the growth.

One of the coolest things about the game is that it is played by name-brand schools. In recent years, DU has hosted men's lax teams from serious schools such North Carolina, Duke, Virginia, Syracuse, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Harvard, Penn State, Penn, Dartmouth, Villanova, etc.

I think North Dakota would great for the game- with an indoor facility, recruits would come. And the fans would enjoy the game - it's fast, physical and goes great with hockey fans. With only 55 schools playing at D-I, its much easier to get good in the sport quickly.

Any idea how much of a profit comes from lax?

Edit: *note to self: read posts carefully before making dumba** replies :silly::)*

P.S. you guys are already planning to expand your lacrosse stadium? Sounds like it's taking off alright. Sweet.

  6. Tough, tough year. Hopefully the program can get out of it's jinx next year and at least compete more, even if the record is similar. Recruiting has to be addressed though.

  7. I find it a bit interesting how adding seats to the Alerus is specifically mentioned. For sake of purely aestetics it would be nice to have seating on the ends of the field, but it doesn't seem like big need right now looking at our current attendance. Although I wouldn't mind having a bigger house for us to grow into. Seems like practice facilities, soccer, and swimming/diving need upgrades more than football. Perhaps there is more going on behind the scenes?

  8. I'm all for the growth of hockey at any level. Given time the Bison could compete with everyone besides the Sioux and Gophers. The biggest problem (besides the usual suspects like funding, an arena, ect.) is the appearent lack of puckheads in Fargo. I agree that Omaha isn't the best comparison becuase it has long had a visible hockey crowd (look at how their minor league hockey is supported). I think the Bison label could convert some casual sports fans to hockey more than a minor league team ever could. Looks like the people of Fargo aren't willing to give it a shot though  .

  9. Good, I'm glad to see both sides are being reasonable and at least trying to come to an agreement. :) While the university has does have some great native american programs, I think UND hasn't done it's best in developing a real relationship with the tribes, a la Florida State. The new ideas sounds good in raising cultural awareness, regardless of what happens to the logo.

  10. I was disappointed last night when I wasn't going to be able to attend the games, but it looks like I would have been turned away anyhow ;) .

Regarding the Betty's seating, it seems to me I've seen it listed somewhere at 3300, which may be the real number if 3300 - empty seats= "sellout" of 3064. I think if UND moved up, we would have the smallest gym in DI ;) .

While we can moves game to the Ralph, maybe in hindsight it would have been more practical to have built the Betty with more seating ;) . So, exactly how expensive would adding seating be?

  11. Nobody is going to add hockey until they resolve three issues: 1. Money; 2. Fanbase/Local Support; and 3. Title IX.

That said, I would rather see a school like Colorado, Penn State or Iowa State add D1 hockey, as they are already D1 schools in other sports, and have the fanbases to support a legitimate program. 'SU would be interesting, and the late Herb Brooks suggested they would be a logical choice, but I don't see Tony Lama making skates anytime soon.???

You're probably right, big schools have the advantage in $$. NDSU might be an exception however, since hockey has been hanging overhead forever there. Once they get situated with their current sports that is.

  12. If PSU did add hockey and a BTHC was started wouldn't they have to add a couple of other teams for scheduling purposes. The two obvious choices would be UND and Notre Dame. Sounds like you guys would make out all right with that. UND in the Big Ten? Makes me sick to think about it. What I would love to see is PSU add hockey along with my beloved Bison. Now if and when UND goes DI then things could get interesting. Ponder this scenario. If everything works out with Big Sky and UND, NDSU and SDSU get in the next few years this chain of events could happen.

-Sacremento and Portland State bolt for a west coast conferance. The Big Sky later adds USD and DU and the conference shapes up like this.

    NDSU

    UND

    SDSU

    USD

    Montana

    Montana State

    Weber State

    Eastern Washington

    Northern Arizona

    Idaho State

    Denver

    UNC

Under this scenario assuming NDSU and USD and one other school adds hockey, perhaps we could have a Big Sky hockey conference that would be a primarily western hockey conference. Say goodbye to the CHA.

There are a lot of if's and maybe's in this scenario but to me as an NDSU fan that would be perfect. (Wouldn't mind kicking out Eastern Washington and Northern Arizona and adding Gonzaga so we have ten Football schools and two basketball schools)

Wow, Big Sky with hockey?! There's one I've never heard of before! I think that's little too far-fetched right now though. Gonzaga even more. But we can dream, right? ???

Actually I think DI NCC with hockey is more likely to happen than a big sky hockey conference. Not that I think a DI NCC will or even should happen (I think it would be detrimental for many involved) just (somewhat) more likely.

  13. NDSU. D1. Everyone kind of knew that football would be ok and competitive right away and they have. Most thought that men's bb would have the biggest struggles while women's bb would be competitive right away with the mid-majors. Well surprise, surprise, NDSU men's hoops has been a huge success and they put a good product on the floor while the women's program has been a failure and recruting has gone in the crapper.

Now I'm not a big hoops guy, but I think some people are being a little too hard on NDSU women's bb squad. Yes, it probably has taken a couple steps back during the transition, but an 8-9 record so far in their first year of (mostly) DI competition is hardly aweful.

  14. NDSU's team was impressive even before this shocker. ??? Got to hand it to them for landing Woodside. The coaches are doing a heck of a job down there too. Hopefully this will generate more interest in the team. Could this fallicitate more DI discussion among UND alumni? It seems inevitable now for SU BB to be getting more and more attention over UND, regardless of the quality of teams we're fielding. You know how competitive alumni get in appearing superior over our rival...

Congrats to NDSU for a well-earned victory. I'll be disappointed if ya lose any more games to the likes of Utah Valley State .
