  1. After about a month into the season, any early picks for Coach of the Year?

As of today I only see two strong contenders for Coach of the Year. Obviously you need to consider Al Henry from Devils Lake who despite a loss last night to Fargo North has his team off to a fast start in the West with a young team. As of today I would give the award to Mark Pivetz from Fargo Shanley, with impressive wins over Central and Jamestown, and potentially an inconsistent West Fargo on Tuesday he could have this team in 4th come region tournament time. There is also a dark horse out West that may be brought into consideration as the season continues. Troy Olson in his first year at Bismarck Century had a hellacious first 3 games to this season, but has wheeled off 4 straight wins, one off an eastern team which many Western schools cannot claim, and shocking Williston last night who many people predicted to finish very strongly at the beginning of the year. If he gets this team into the State Tournament, you have to consider Olson a threat for Coach of the Year.

  2. WF-5 Wahp-3

Looks like they learned how to read in West Fargo today, because they obviously saw the 25-0 score in the forum. That's the only feasible explanation I can come up with. From what I heard they outplayed Central on Tuesday to about tank one to the mighty BW Blades tonight? This week they took 2 steps forward and about 8 back.

    Any word on Grafton-Shanley tonight?

  3. Big couple days here for some eastern teams. Headlining the bill is South-Grafton tonight to see who the early frontrunner in the conference is. Tomorrow night Central-WF seems like an intriguing match up to jockey for that 4 seed. RR will also be tested with EGF tomorrow night, and poor Jamestown may string up a win against Century. Predictions anyone?

  4. I witnessed that move by Mihulka and it was something else. I don't know many people who would try to pull that off in a game. He made it look easy by just tapping the puck into the net and then performing a somewhat cocky celebration. But what can you say he did have 5 points on 5 goals inlcuding a hat trick. West Fargo looked like they couldn't handle Red River.

  5. Central tops North 3-0. Central played a fantastic defensive game.

Did Central really play well defensively or is North just that weak? When watching Shanley play Central the Deacons were able to get up and down the ice pretty well with Central. If you think about it after Klenow and Klein what do the Spartans bring to the table?

  6. No, we all know about the eastern bias. Frankly I think it was a fluke a CC player walked out with it last year all though he deserved it. The WCHA has struggled in Hobey Baker Winners as of late even though its been the best conference in Division 1 college hockey for the past decade. There's always a Kariya to watch out for at Maine or a CCHA goaltender. UND'S problem as of late is getting two years out of their recruits. Guys like Toews and Oshie aren't going to be spending enough time here. Hey if Parise can't win it who's going to?

  7. That was great hockey to watch last night. Just curious if anybody has a link to the schedule it would be much appreciated if you posted it. Hopefully they stick with the rivalry theme and we see some Warroad-Roseau, Jefferson-Kennedy, Fergus-DL action this year.

  8. West Fargo improves to 3-0 with another blow out win. Still think they dont deserve credit he who shoots top shelf?

Talk to me on sunday night after they play the only "Red" team that matters. Let me tell you 3-1 going into the 3rd vs. Red Lake Falls and giving up almost 30 shots to a bad Jamestown team isnt going to cut it if they're in the class you say they are.

  9. 1. South/Grafton

    3. Red River

    4. West Fargo

    5. North

    6. Minot

    7. Central

    8. Williston

Top seed can't be decided till they play their make up game. That should be an amazing high school hockey game and i think it will come down to who takes more penalties because both teams should have deadly powerplays with all the firepower they have.

  10. Stafford is just one of those guys, reminds me a lot of Arnott with the Devils in the playoffys when they won the Cup a few years back. He's played like a yo-yo so far this year but x-brain or not he's a major contributor to this team when he's on. Hopefully he help carry the ship this week over the goofers.

  11. I agree with your rankings, but I would put Grafton ahead of RR for now.

I've been pleasently surprised with Minot. Although they are a little lacking in the depth department both of the losses this year occurred with them playing without some of their better players. Yesterday against East Grand they played without one of the better wings on the team (for what reason I am unsure), and the second line center played only one shift and left with a hurt shoulder (maybe collar bone, not sure), and they had to juggle some things up. It worries me that this team has been hit with the injury bug, but then again it also worries me that they only put up two goals yesterday when they had a lot of chances to score some more.

    I'll give my rankings.

    1. South

    2. Grafton

    3. Red River

    4. Central

    5. Shanley

    6. West Fargo

    7. Minot

    8. Fargo North

    9. Williston

    10. Devils Lake

I was just wondering why you thought Shanley would be 5th when they beat Central who you have ranked ahead of them. Shanley puts a good squad on the ice, really transition well. I think they'll stack up well with the rest of the east this year. Another thing I noticed was North and Minot behind West Fargo, that just seems odd to me. ;)

  12. This will be great to watch, nothing better than good old fast paced Minnesota High School Hockey to get you going on a Tuesday night. Just curious does anybody know if Moorhead will ever be on besides their Schwan's Cup games?
