  1. I have hired people in private industry and served on a search committee at UND. You only contact references for people you are seriously considering for the position. I am sure that they used the guidelines outlined in the job announcement to eliminate the people that were not qualified, found a group that most closely matched that criteria, and decided to look closer at those people. My guess is that they checked references on 5-10 candidates (maybe a few more) and made their list of candidates to interview. Without seeing the applications or talking with references it is very difficult to tell how qualified the current candidates are.

So if you saw Bobby Knight as a reference, would you call him and ask him about this coach?? Perhaps the LTC doesnt know Bobby....he was a head coach at West Point, coached Mike K...a certain Duke coach....he should know that history....of West Points that is!

  2. I have hired people, and you believe that I pre-screen applications long before I ever start contacting references. It becomes an impossible task when you have many applications to go through a full-blown checkout of every person. You will have some initial criteria in mind, and simply reviewing the applications will cause some to fall out of consideration. When you have many applications, it does not take much time to realize that some applications are just not up to par. Then you take a second harder look, at more specifics. You should be able to weed the applications down to a manageable size before you begin contacting references. There is no inference that you have pre-selected the winner. It is simply a process of carving the mountain down to a manageable molehill, and minimizing wasted time. You can always relook at applications that were previously screened out if the tighter investigation eliminates all of your smaller group.

I missed the part of a high school coach criteria....or a director of operations...whom isnt a coach at all?? I missed those criteria???

  3. We did contact him," Buning said. "He declined an invitation to come to our campus for an interview."

I wonder if this was really the case.....Hollywood??

"People debate whether those are the proper qualifications, but they're not looking at the best interests of the university, the players and the future players we want here," Buning said.

Wow is that a shot at any alum or fan who has a opinion?? I am not sure how to take that quote??

  4. As stated earlier, if things dont change....Coach Lennon is not happy with the current situation, mainly...budgets and playing northern iowa......there are two kinds of military....guys who go in do the job...dont ask for anything and those who kiss up...get a promotion...i will let you guess which one this is....from his suspicious hires, poor management style....gettin rid of Rob Bollinger...among others but him being the biggest name....and as has been pointed out many times...decisions being made....I wonder who gave the order to offer Randall the job and a hour later retract the offer???

  5. Someone tell me why there are only 3 peope on this hiring committee??? When has there every been only 3 people....one being the AD himself....why not have a committe....weed out the 56 resumes....give him 5 names and he makes the call....anyone who would make this connection would assume that the AD has already made his decision....and I also did hear from a very very good source that he has picked his man already...from out east.....why not have Ken Towers on the committee....Steve Brekke, coach Lennon, how about someone from the Boosters....maybe another community fan...a big time basketball fan....make this community feel like they are part of the solution and you will get a better reception from this tight knit small town GF atmosphere.....if the coach from Army gets the job....that will be a joke!!

As far as 5 years of experience goes, Smith has it with Asst coaching experience as well.....he was a Asst. more than 5 years......if that is the qualiications they are using for RH as well?? agreed???

  6. 1. He was at Southwest Minnesota St, as a DII head coach. (Did NDSU hire him out of Mayville? No.) BTW, is NDSU in a conference right now? That is no knock on Tim Miles, but it was really only the win against Wisconsin that put him on the map. Tim Miles is now a major reason NDSU will likely get in a conference for the 2008-9 season.

    2. Even if it was for a significant pay increase?

He was at SW State going to the elite 8....with a NSIC team....where was any coach before they got a chance...do you think every coach hired was at a top notch school???

  7. With every one of your posts, D1sioux, I grow more and more thankful you are no longer part of the athletic department. You may be justified in some of your views, but I think most people would characterize your behavior on this board as the very thing you accuse Buning of: unprofessional.

that is funny....and not worthy of my response....maybe star2city is one of the drinking buddies....you know what they say drinking buddies are tighter than husband and wife...those late night parties can get pretty wild...lol....or maybe a staff hire defending the new found friend???

  8. The sad part about the interview on Fox was the AD there taking all the credit when Randall was the one who got the Purdue game going and IU....always there for the glory but never taking the heat...epidemic these days!!!!!!!! begin writing the second letter...PLZ!!!!!!

  9. I do believe a apology is in order Sicatoka....to myself...for doubting me again...

That aside...I know this is true too....very unprofessional....whether he didnt know he couldnt even offer the job to anyone until it closes....whether the LTC pleads arrogant or ignorant....either way its no excuse.....still the matter at hand is why would Randall apply after being treated this way....I would have cleaned out my office the next day....one more showing of a second letter needing to be written.....someone please speed this process up... I am not sure Randall is the best guy for the job....but no one deserves that treatment....no one....unprofessional....as unprofessional as his departmental restructuring.....class begets class....and some dont have any......

  10. With the list growing everyday, with alot of very good people applying, I think Herbst chances seem to be dwindling with almost every application that comes in.

Rumor has it RH was offered the job by the AD and the offer retracted within a hour of the offer....any comments on this situation???

My first thought is....why would RH apply then if this was the case, because that was a ultimate slap in the face....whether he deserved the job or not....not a professional way to conduct business!!! IMO

  11. Some of you guys on this board never cease to amaze me.....have you seen any quotes from coach Lennon on this??? Why is that??? He didnt want the game maybe??? Its funny....ask any of the quote smaller schools who play up and get the big gurantee....check with them the next 3 weeks with their health....simple fact is with 63 schollies....you have more bodies...better players and the other team gets beat up...ask St. Cloud when they did it a few years ago....ask Mankato who did it a few years ago....the big pay day isnt worth sacrificing the season.....but with the budget in a mess as it is....I guess LTC had no choice...perhaps that top heavy staff would have lessened the burden.....maybe when coach Lennon leaves then you brilliant people will connect the dots....Rob Bollinger leaves, Rich GLas leaves....when coach Lennon decides enough is enough....then perhaps you will connect the dots...

  12. Perhaps he knows of the situation within the dept....maybe he spoke to coach Glas....perhaps he is cocerned with the D 1 move....perhaps he feels he can beat UND again next year!!
