  1. I'll play contrarian a little bit...

    <contrarian>

    The problem with "savings rate" is that it's essentially an income statement. An income statement is nearly useless without a balance sheet. If you look at household net worth, it rose almost 10% last year.

    How much of "consumption" dollars went into investments that contribute to net worth? How much were net worths increased by factors that aren't counted as income (e.g. capital gains)?

    Savings rates are not an indicator of economic well-being, they're a counter-indicator. Why save when your net worth is growing? You save when you're worried about the future, when the economy is bad.

    </contrarian>

    No doubt that a lot of people live well outside their means. I think there's a fair chance that the rapid loosening of credit in the last decade is going to cause serious pain for a lot of people who took advantage of that credit, particularly those who overbought on housing.

    I do think we'll see a legitimate structural shift in net savings as boomers retire. When they quite socking away money into 401(k)s and IRAs and start withdrawing and spending it, then we're going to see some serious consumption.

    You make great points and are all valid. I agree 100%.

  2. Are you saying that UND did not offer him any financial help?

    There would have been some money offered academically, but none at this point for football. He was told that if he earned his way into getting some playing time they would give some money. SCSU offered a full ride and pulled it a few weeks ago. I am not sure if this had anything to do with the transition to the NSIC or not. No clue how much money ndsu was thinking but I imagine they found the recruits they were going after and then pulled their offer to Andrew.

  3. I'm not sure how seriously UND ever recruited him, but Andrew Blacklance from Thief River Falls is apparently going to Northern Iowa, per this blog.

    I know some Big 10 schools were looking at him, but I am surprised he went even as high as IAA. I thought DII would be a good level of play for his size and ability. St Cloud and NDSU were both offering partial money and both pulled their offers a couple of weeks ago. I hope he does well with UNI.

  4. 3 and 13 with a holding call.............Accept the penalty?

    What was Delta thinking? Make them punt.

    Now its 4th and 1 after a 22 yard pick up by Finnerty.

    Could prove to be a very costly mistake!

  5. For how much GVSU thinks that nobody can handle the weather in Allendale, it sure seems as though the Lakers are the ones not ready for the weather. I am still surprised they typically practice indoors.

    Delta State has finally figured out that they need play a "cover 2" instead of "man to man". This is what really hurt the SIOUX.

  6. I would like to get a nice FB jersey to wear to games. It bugs me when I show up to a UND FB game and there are more people there wearing hockey jerseys than FB jerseys. However, I didn't like that the ones at the Sioux Shop didn't have any numbers on them. Maybe you can get them personalized like the hockey jerseys there?!?!

    I have a friend who owns an embroidery business. I will check with him to see what the cost would be to personalize the jerseys. I think the hockey jerseys (at the Ralph) had a cost of about $60 to personalize. Maybe that company could personalize these as well since the jerseys are from Siouxshop.

  7. I can't say exactly where the sign is but I am thinking the whole thing was redone with photshop including the ND logo.

    If its on I-29 the closest town would be McArther (10 miles from Canada) - Exit 208

    If its on I-94 the closest town would be Dawson (50 miles west of Jamestown - Exit 208

    I can't imagine either interstate would have a welcome to ND inside of the state inself. It might not necessarily be on an interstate either.

    Great sign though.

  8. Isn't it SB I29 at Fargo? I think that one of the GF exits is mile marker 132 and Fargo is about 75 miles south of there. Also, Fargo is the about the only town that could have 3 exits at 1 mile marker.

    So that would make the WHOLE sign location touched up as there would not be a "Welcome" sign there of course.

    I am pretty sure the exits in Fargo are from 65 to 69.

  9. I was thinking it was still 36 for next year as well. I am pretty sure I remember reading an article about our friends from the south that indicated that you were allowed additional scholarships each year. I think the final 2 years of the 5 year period you are allowed the full 63. I will have to dig out my NC$$ handbook and do some digging.

  10. If there ever was a year for Dale Lennon to depart from his philosophy of essentially only recruiting 4-year players, this is it. A couple of reasons why:

    1) This is going to be the toughest recruiting year out of the next several. Since UND red-shirts all of its freshmen, this next class won't have any opportunity to participate in the national playoffs. Plus, UND will need to be recruiting D-I caliber players in this next class, but trying to do so with partial scholarships. It would be foolish to give partial money to kids this year that you're not certain are D-I players. In other words, since there will be a huge boost in scholarship money in 2008, this freshman class should focus on quality rather than quantity.

    2) UND needs a top-notch quarterback and 4 or 5 athletes on defense to be right there competing for a national title in the final year of D-II. Even if you have to give some transfer type players full rides, why not make one last run at the championship? I would imagine that with 19 seniors graduating there are 10-12 scholarships available for next year. Give six impact transfers full rides and then split up the rest over a dozen freshmen with a promise of a full scholarship the following year if they do well. Remember, there will be an additional 21 scholarships to recruit with next year.

    UND offers 36 scholarships at this time if I'm not mistaken. I am not sure what the DI transition allows for in terms of additional scholarships. How does the additional 21 scholarships fit into this. Can we offer 57 next year? Who's got some info on this?
