The Detroit Red Wings have invited 11 free agent tryouts to training camp this season. Over the years, the organization has signed a number of valuable players through this approach, including Sean Avery and Jason Williams. Others could end up earning AHL contracts with Grand Rapids or ECHL deals with Toledo. Here is a look at the free agent tryouts at this year's camp (excluding Igor Larionov and Derek King):
Kevin SPIEWAK, 5-10, 180, C, 42-15-14-29-45, North Dakota (NCAA): Spiewak, 24, finished four years at the University of North Dakota last season and played three games with Portland (AHL) on an amateur tryout contract. He is in search of a pro contract for 2003-04.
