  1. Perhaps it was to get more games/longer season.

The USHL's reputation as a better than average junior league has only come to the fore in the last year or so. As for the NAHL, it is not even on anybody's radar except in the places where they actually have a team. I'm going to guess that the Wellington Dukes would be a very good team in the NAHL.

I've never asked him why he wound up in Wellington. I'm going to guess that someone scouted him at a hockey tournament or camp in Canada and that is where he decided to go. I believe he was also drafted in the OHL draft so that may have had an influence on his choice.

You should note that I only provide names of kids that I have had some kind of involvement with. I will not give a name unless I'm pretty sure that the kid is a good citizen. Zach and family are a great group of people.

Zach, if he comes and makes the team will be a 4 year player. He will not blow anybody away with his dazzling skills or speed. He simply comes to play every night.

And as I stated in my previous post, the ultimate goal here is to get the two younger guys, Corey and Trevor. Both are showing signs of becoming outstanding players.

  2. Who?

Here are some excerpts from other web sites. You may recognize some names!

Speaking of youngsters here's a list of Wisconsin kids that made the Central District teams for the Summer Festival. The region is almost entirely Illinois and Wisconsin with some Missouri's and a few randoms.

    Final Stats-Boys Select 15 Festival

Five players from Wisconsin participated in the USA Hockey Select 15 Festival in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Here's their stats for the fifth (and final) game and their total stats for the Festival:

    F-Matt Johnson-Somerset-2 G Total: 3 G, 7.3 Pim

    F-Sean Little-Fond du Lac-1 A Total: 1 G, 3 A, 1.3 Pim

    F-Kord Miller-Delafield-11.3 Pim Total: 22 Pim

    F-Nick Widing-Somerset-None Total: 3 Pim

    F-Corey Morbeck-Jackson-23 minutes, 10 shots-9 saves, 1 ga Total: 115 minutes, 60 shots, 57 saves, 3 ga, .950 sv. pctg., 1.20 gaa

UW recruit Zach Bearson's brother Alex Bearson also participated at the Select 15 Festival. Here's his numbers:

    F-Alex Bearson-Naperville, IL-1 G Total: 1 G, 1 A, 7.3 Pim

Kord Miller led the ENTIRE FESTIVAL in penalties with 22 Pim. The next player had 16.3 Pim....

Corey Morbeck finished with the best save percentage and goals against average of all the goaltenders.

Corey is Zack's younger brother. One of the best if not the best goaltender in the US for his age group.

The 1993 born brother is the best of the bunch.

  3. when you say that you know him(thats what i read it as), do you mean that you personally know him? or have you just seen him a lot. and if you do know him, does he talk about what he plans on for college or whatever?

He knows me and I know him. I don't know what his plans are. I don't think he does either, he's only 13. I just thought it would be kind of funny mentioning his name! It would also be kind of neat to follow another potential Toews like player and see where he winds up.

  4. Here's one to keep an eye on for quite some time. 1993 born Michael St. Croix. Leading scorer in Manitoba AAA Bantam 1 (1992 born players). I'm not sure but I don't think Toews was the leading scorer in his first year as an age advanced player.

Know Michael very well and I can attest to the quality of this little guy. He isn't going to be that little either. Older brother is 6'3" 220 Ibs.

Keep an I on him. It should be good for some laughs.

Also, if we are going to go to Wisco to get kids, than why is no one talking about Zach Morbeck. Get this kid (1988 born) and get his younger brothers before everyone else figures out who they are. Ask Greico about Morbeck. I'm sure he would not hesitate to have him as a teammate.

  5. I wonder if Ziggy regrets leaving? Sounds as if he is the third goalie again. Are people going to say he didn't get a fair shake in Duluth too? I wonder if Ziggy is even dressing or sitting in the stands, I suppose he and the other back up get to help open doors on the bench.

It think its funny that people talk as if Grecio is a hack and a crappy goalie and Walski is getting an unfair shake. Walski is a practice goalie. Just because Grecio let in 9 goals this weekend many are ready to say he isn't good and we should give Walski a chance. I would be willing to bet Phil would have let that many in himself this past weekend like others have stated. It would surprise me if Grecio is one of the top goal tenders in the league either next season or the year after.

I'm guessing you meant "wouldn't surprise you". I'm going to guess, like a few people already, that Grecio won the starting job over Walski based on his performance during practice, i.e. he probably worked his tail off and battled for every shot and rebound. If he is a battler, and I have no reason to believe he isn't, then Lammy better watch out. He may be no. 2 again if he doesn't pick up his socks.

  6. If fighting in the NHL were somehow "banned" I wouldn't complain, although I'd almost rather see the league institute rules/penalties a la the NCAA as a first step to see the results. However I repeat that I think people are exaggerating how much fighting happens in today's NHL. This is a link to the total# of fights by team through October 12, 2006: http://www.hockeyfights.com/leaders/teams/

While Anaheim seems to have a fight per game, 21 teams have 5 total fights or less, 14 teams have 4 or less and 9 teams have 3 fights or less total. To take that further, there have been roughly 70 total fights this season, which is about 2.2 fights per team and less than 0.5 fights/game for the entire league.

I'll repeat that if fighting were taken out of the game completely I wouldn't stop watching the game nor whine about it, but I just don't think it's the problem some make it out to be. I also don't take issue with those that would like to see it banned because I think there's some logic behind the argument, but some of the reasoning is also flawed.

Play by play announcer noted that the Avalanche have had one fight so far this season.

  7. Yup. Part of the game. With that much money involved in a sport I think anything goes! FIGHT, FALL, BLEED!

Boogard seemed to know what he was doing. Grabbed Fedorik right in the middle of his shirt so he could control Fedork and at the same time give him a couple of shots with his left hand, then he popped him with the right.

Fedorik was all over the place; not under control at all. Thats what happens when you don't know what your doing.

  8. I understand your point about Phil having a weak spot as all goalie's do, but that doesn't contradict the fact that I don't believe any of the goals he allowed on Friday were his fault, which was the post you responded to.

Goalies have to stop the puck. If Phil wants to get to the next level he has to start making those saves. We can try and stay politically correct here, but goalies know that if they want to succeed, they have to stop the puck.

As a coach, I would have been more upset by his immediate reaction to the goals. As a goalie you cannot let the other team know that you are rattled or frustrated. You must stay cool. Ron Hextall was not a good example.

Battling and not allowing guys into your area of the ice is key, however. In this case, Ron Hextall was a good example.

Maybe he has to get a little meaner and stronger at the same time.

  9. When they showed Toews in his box seat he was leaning forward with both his arms on the table. He wouldn't be doing that a shoulder injury.

I personally think it is a lower body injury. I also think that it occured last weekend against Wicso. Toews was having a lot of guys leaning on him last week and he may have tweeked it.

He didn't look right to me near the end of the last game against Wisco and he didn't look like himself last friday either, except for that one early rush where he turned the Maine D-man inside out.

  10. Didn't see any of tonight's game, but last night there was NOT a single goal that was Lammy's fault.

Plus, I still think this Maine team is superb and it isn't just the Sioux team that's gonna take a licking against them.

A goaltender coach would disagree. Lamie appears to have a weak blocker side. If I was coaching against him, everything would be going blocker side, 14 inches off the ice.

  11. Sprigs, you beat me to it. FTA is the way to go.

Watched the games last week on regular satellite and the picture was less than ideal.

The feeds off of FSSN appear to be a higher quality, probably because they are the raw feeds and they haven't been messed with.

Bought another FTA receiver last week for $80 off of flea bay. As Sprigs indicated, read Iceberg's thread, you should be able to figure out what to do. If not, go to your local satellite guys and they should be able to get you set up.

Check out this thread. Iceberg and PSB have all kinds of knowledge on what to get and how to use the systems. PSB sells them. It is an addition to cable, and you can get FSSN at no monthly cost (FTA=free to air).

Lots of Sioux fans have installed these systems on their own. PSB has installed many for Sioux fans in the TC area.

  12. Parise was by no means given the number one spot from day 1. I believe he started splitting time with Brandt because Brandt kept screwing up on and off the ice. Phil is a very steady goaltender and will definately be able to guide his team to the frozen four. Do we know that the reason mario went to northern Michigan is because of his dad? For all we know, him and his jaques(sp) are closer beings they are closer in age. :) Lots of things could have come into play I suppose.

We don't know and shouldn't assume that his decision is based just on hockey. Maybe N. Michigan has some academic advantages in his preferred field of study :(

  13. Toews is the more highly rated player and gets most of the press, but I've long thought Oshie was a superior player. I'm sure many will disagree. Just an opinion.

    QUOTE(dagies @ Oct 14 2006, 10:38 PM) *

Toews was a man among boys at times.

Just for the record, he was the youngest player on the ice last night.

Other than that, I agree with what you're saying. Nice summary dagies.

Toews is generally considered a superior player because of the age difference. Again most people just don't realize how young he really is. He is the second youngest player on this team and only by a few weeks.

  14. While at the Manitoba game last week and the two games this weekend my friends and I couldn't help but notice how horrible the music at The Ralph has been so far. The music they are playing during warm ups and breaks in the action this season flat out sucks compared to the music over the last few years .

First of all the music during warm ups is absolutely horrible. How could you ever replace the opening song "Right Now" by Van Halen (which they have been using for the 4 year that I have been going to games) with "The Kids Aren't Alright" by The Offspring? Tell me how you replace a band that has one of the greatest guitarist of all time with a whinny pathetic power-cord playing band. I don

  15. Noticed Gregoire scored a goal in Lincoln's exibition game on Sept 29. News report suggested that he actually scored two goals. Can't really get any other info on the other games that they played.

This kid is not getting any press down in Lincoln, Yet!

  16. Must have been something else going on between Johnson and the Canes management, because on the surface, this whole thing looks like a steal for the Kings, without a lot of long term upside for Carolina.

Kevin McCarthy who coaches the defence at Carolina is a pretty smart guy. Maybe he saw something he didn't like. Who knows?

  17. I tend to think this line up is quite impressive, do you realize that Oshie was the only soph to make the 1st team and one of two in for both teams - very impressive. Oshie's play is impressive and attention grabbing stuff, Toews is more subtle, almost like T Zajac - Toews will get his time to shine

Toews could care less about these polls. He is more interested in getting a national championship before he moves on.

I predict he will explode this year and will show why he should have been picked first overall in this year's draft. He has put on an extra 17 lbs. and about 1 inch on his frame. Strength will no longer be a big issue.

And to think that he will still be one of the youngest players on the Sioux if not the youngest.

  18. I heard today that the Manitoba game along with a couple other games, I'd assume Quinnipiac, will be broadcast on the net for free so UND can test out Dataflix. Then they'll start charging for games again.

If Bina doesn't start the game, I'm going over to the Sioux bench and punching Hakstol in the face.

Get yourself an FTA Satellite system and watch the games for free all year. Just look at Iceberg's posts and you will get all the info you need.

  19. Saw Wade Poplawski the other night and he looked very very good. Kid is a smooth skater, much better than his older brother. Reminds me of James Patrick (remember him?). The game looks absolutely effortless for him which is similar to his dad who was an outstanding athlete as well. Stays square to the best skaters on the ice without any trouble. Great on the point with perfect vision, doesn't have to look at the puck at all when he is trying to find the seams. What can I say, he would be perfect for the Sioux, but......

Looks like a long shot since he has several offers from out east. Holy Cross is one of them. Dad said he is a bit of an Academic so Holy Cross or another Ivy League school is likely where he is going.

  20. Are you serious? I'd say the WHL does a much better job of drawing the top California talent than the NCAA does.

I guess we'll have to see how Ty Gretzky does at Shattuck, but like I said, if he had a different last name, would there be that much attention given to a kid that played JV Prep School hockey in Arizona last year?

I guess 13 kids in the WHL pretty well covers it.
