  1. Hate to say it but Toews was outplayed by Hensick last night. Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather have Toews on my team, but Henisck got the better of him when they were matched up last night. Hopefully JT uses that as motivation tonight. I'm sure he will be matched up with Osposko all night. Time to elevate his game even further and finished his last season in green by hoisting number 8. The guy has won at every level he has played. Time to add a NC to his trophy case.

    GO SIOUX.

OK. That's true. And how old is Hensick? I believe he's an 85. Toews is an 88. Believe me, Toews is gone after this season. He can't afford to not go to the next level. He's old rival and former Team Canada teammate Jordan Staal is already there. There is no way Toews will not follow as quickly as possible.

I expect Toews to come through big time today. He has always been a big game player at every level and this next game is as big as they get. Watch out gophers, your now in his sights and I wouldn't want to be the Gophers goalie. Toews and company are going to make him dizzy.

  2. Going to be wide-open old time hockey this weekend. 3 teams loaded with NHL picks who do not play the trap. Should be a blast. Ned Braden would love it...

No way. Minnesota will try and employ some sort of trap. You watch.

  3. Can't we move beyond the "our fans and players are so much classier than yours" debate. Both sides have stupid fans and great fans, both teams have arrogance and sportsmanship. This is a rivalry fellas, We're not supposed to be proper during the games. You don't play cheap, and fans should not be crude, but you do play/cheer with passion and talk some trash. It's trying to get a mental/emotional edge. Now how you behave after the games is another story. That's a time to shake hands, say nice game and buy the lsoing fan/player a beer.

In Lammy' defense, he was the biggest showboat goalie in the college hockey. I don't mind skating out of the crease, that's fine, but the "posing" he'd do after a save was obnoxious. That said, I didn't see him do it once during the final five. Not sure why, but I noticed and appraciated it. ALthough, there's nothing wrong with him showboating during the game if he can back it up. Not my style, but as written earlier, maybe it's gives him an edge emtioanl/mentaly.

I really don't like what he does either. It's going to cost him at some point.

I'm a big fan of efficient goalies who hardly get noticed during a game. That tells me that the guy knows how to play his angles and has good technique.

  4. My only hope for Toews coming backup for another year is that he is still only 18 years old, won't turn 19 till after the season. Regardless of talent level, that is awfully young to be in the NHL. I think one more year in college would be very beneficial. icon1.gif

For TJ, I think it would be good to stay one more year and get even stonger. Not sure his style of play is conducive to the rigors of playing 80+ games in the NHL.

In reality, Towes is almost for sure gone, and Oshie is probably > 50% gone. Who knows, if Duncan wins the Hobey as a free agent, someone may try to sign him too. It sure would be fun to see this line together for one more season, but that is my selfishness as a fan.

I also think Chorney is gone and possibly Finley. I think the teams that have their rights may think they will develop better with their AHL team.

Well, I personally think he is gone. First, he is likely under some pressure from Chicago to sign.

Second, he knows how well Jordan Staal did this year. Johnny, being a very competative guy, will want to show everyone that he probably should have been picked before Staal at last year's draft. As for winning another WJC, he already has two, plus a World Under 18 and Under 17 World Championships. I think that's enough for one career.

  5. I am freakin out why the heck doesn't fssn show it? I think we are important enough to be shown on our own network... they have done it before why wouldn't they do it this weekend. There is no way i am waiting to watch the game at 10 or 11... i will be found at a bar. GO SIOUX

Because FSSN and FSN are two completely different animals. FSSN is the Sioux's private TV station. FSN is a commercial entity that would want a substantial amount of money from FSSN to show the game.

Best bet is to go to a local sports bar if you don't have Direct TV or Dishnet with the added sports package.

Another option is to scan the sky for wild feeds if you have a motorized FTA setup. That is probably what I'm going to try.

  6. I blame the last goal on Chorney looking like he's gonna take the puck deep all by himself and then all of a sudden dumping it on the blue line waaaaay before I blame Lee. It's not exactly as though Wheeler got a good shot off.

I agree, the only thing that Hakstol will criticize on that play after the game will be Chorney's play at the blueline. He should have put the puck in deep at that point in the game.

I'm not going be too hard on Chorney, however. From what I saw, Minnesota did a great job pressuring UND's defence and particularly Chorney. They were relentless all the way up the ice. Very un-Gopher like. They also won with a fluke goal. That won't happen again. Lammy just has to make the stops that he is supposed to make and they should be fine.

  7. Someone stated this before and I think it's worth repeating, I think we were all a bit spoiled by Oshie's awesome play last year. It's easy to draw comparisons between Forney & Oshie: both were from MN section 8A and both led their respective teams to state playoffs. It's pretty clear that they're not the same type of player, though. Forney's finesse and Oshie works his but off. Anyway, I, too, hope that he has an awesome sophomore season. Expectations are high.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Oshie was a little older than Forney when they first arrived. Oshie is a late 1986 (December I believe) and Forney was born in the summer of 1988. That means that there was roughly 6 to 8 months difference between the two when they first arrived at UND. This may explain some of the differences between these two.

I'm also guessing that Forney did not prepare enough for University hockey. For the few times that I've seen him he appears to be physically weaker than the guys he is playing against. If he is having surgery this summer, that may take away another year of strength training. You may have to wait until the following year to see him take off.

  8. A couple of questions... (satellite newbie) :silly:

    1. How difficult is it to aim the dish correctly, and once aimed does it stay in the correct position? I.E. how much dish adjusting takes place over the course of a season?

    2. Will new cables need to be run into the home (and throughout) from outside, or can I somehow splice into my current dish network lines with some sort of selector?

    3. Is there a chance that the satellite feed will be cut off in the forseeable future, or will I likely be watching FSSN programming for the long term?

    Thanks!

Answer to 1: That depends on your ability to figure out a compass and level. Your looking for the satellite located at 89W on the horizon. For those who are located along the Red River, due south is roughly at 97W, which means you have to twist the dish to the left about 8 degrees (97-89=8) from due south. Chicago has a longitude of 87 37" W so you would twist to the right a few degrees at most from you true south. This assumes that you are looking at the sky from behind the dish. I usually try and find a strong satellite such as 91W to first figure out where I am and then I slowly adjust my dish until I know I have the right satellite. Once you've aimed your dish you really shouldn't need to touch it ever again.

All this information regarding dish pointing is available on the internet. Here's a link to Iceberg's site as an example "http://www.satelliteguys.us"

Answer to 2: It depends on your current dishnet equipment, i.e., LNB type, switch type, etc. It is probably more straightforward to run a new cable and have your FTA receiver permanently connected to your 33" dish. If and when you decide to get a motor you will be happy that you installed the extra cable.

Answer to 3: No one knows. The feeds could be turned off tomorrow. It is still pretty cool watching the live feeds, however.

  9. Its actually KU Band, which is a 30 to 36" dish. There are 2 ways to have it set up.

    1. A fixed dish at the satellite that the FSSN uses. Lots of Sioux fans outside of the FSSN cable area have that. They buy a basic system for a couple hundred bucks (or less) and use it just for the FSSN. They aim the dish at the satellite the FSSN uses and put in the satellite info to pick it up. 15 minutes before game time the screen pops up and when its done the signal goes bye bye. When the season is over, some people unplug the receiver and it doesn't get fired up until late September or 1st game in October :silly:

    2. A Motorized system. This allows you to pick up whatever is free up on the satellites. I have a motorized because on some weekends there are other hockey games out there. Yes you have to search for them but its well worth it. Motorized does take a little more to set up than a fixed. Plus I use my setup for more than just the FSSN

No fees once you buy the system and it can work in conjunction with any other setup (antenna, cable, satellite). Its a receiver that is totally independent of your other viewing setup.

Did a quick search and found superfta.com and Hobbyracer.com located in Chicago. I'm sure if you looked a little harder you would find more using Google or any other search engine.

    Super FTA

    P.O. Box 1363

    Arlington Hts, IL 60006-1363

    United States

Don't know anything about them but they do sell Viewsat receivers at roughly the going price, 33" dish and an H90 Motor (the motor is optional but it is very nice to have). I bought mine off of e-bay for about $60.

I would recommend an FTA system for any diehard Sioux Fan. It just doesn't make sense to watch the games on a little computer monitor when you can get an FTA system for a few hundred dollars and watch a crisp clean picture. It's amazing how much sharper the raw feeds are relative to the regular broadcast provider versions of the same thing.

  10. EJ doesn't have to list to tDon...he can wait until next year and learn his media savvy from his new coach...:silly:

I said it before and I will say it again. The best two players taken in last year's draft were Toews and Staal and in that order.

  11. Simple -

We have a freshman class without any impact players - Some may develop in the future, but overall they are a big dissapointment - sepecially when you see the tremendous production other teams are getting from their top freshmen. In addition, many of the returning players have not developed like we had hoped. At this point, after the first line, I'm not sure if we have a lot of talent. This worries me, especially if you think about next year. We definately did not reload this year.

I've warned people a few times that they have missed out on some pretty significant talent and it will likely cost the Sioux over the next few years. Everybody is holding their breath waiting for David Toews. Well David isn't the same kind of player that Jonny is. He is more grittier but also a little smaller. He also doesn't have quite the same snipping ability or vision that Jon has. Losing Gregoire to DU is going to hurt. He was a shade less talented than Jonny but will be no slouch at DU. Colin Wilson was another recruit that would have provided some impact next year. The Sioux have to pursue the best players in their own backyard a little harder. If they do, there will be no one asking how good the next crop will be. There will always be somebody that will step up.

Oh and by the way, the next potential Jonny Toews is Michael St. Croix. Keep your eyes on this kid. He is going to be very good. And yes he is only 13 but I said the same thing about Jonny when he was 13.

  12. Maybe the time advantage they have is because there are no other players stepping up and producing on the man advantage.

Exactly. PP time is a reward to those who produce. If you don't produce you don't play the PP. This isn't peewee hockey and the players know that. They have to step it up when they get the opportunity or show it in practice.

PK time is also a reward to those guys that know how to play defence.

If your a player that wants to get anywhere you want to be on either one of these special teams as a minimum. Being on both is exceptional.

  13. Jason Gregoire to Denver...

    Edit:

I've stated this before and I will again. Denver has the best 2007 class. Nothing wrong with ours at all, but hats of to Gwoz, he has a great class. Gregoire will be 2007 or 2008, I suspect this decision will be a factor of other pending commitments and how he recovers from his injury, which so far has been great.

This is a bigger recruiting loss than most of you realize. Gregoire is somewhere between Jon Toews and Colin Wilson in ability. He has not been ranked very high by the scouting services at this point in time because of his injury. Once they see some more games they'll realize he may have 1st round potential in the upcoming NHL draft.

  14. I watched the UAA coaches shake hands with the sioux coaches, but then they left the ice and went down the tunnel before any players could shake their hands. What a real classy group they got.

And for what its worth, that fighting major Anderson got was his 2nd of the year, so he will be gone at least 2 games.

I met these guys last week and they were just fine. The head coach in particular was quite friendly. I wouldn't read too much into them not shaking hands.

  15. As a result of the Sioux making it to the Frozen Four the past two years we have had the opportunity to see the officials from other conferences. Generally I have been impressed with them and embarrassed at the WCHA officiating. The WCHA is a first class league, except for the officiating which is third class. I simply fail to understand why WCHA officiating seems to be so deficient.

I have to agree. Several of the WCHA refs, particularly Shepperd look like they've never even played the game. Shepperd looks like he's ready to fall over everytime he steps on the ice.

  16. That might work out well, but his numbers haven't been overwhelming at Shattuck. Keep in mind that Duncan would not have been bold, but he is a great college player.

Duncan scored a ton of goals when he was at Shattuck. I believe he outscored Toews, however, Toews was 15 and Duncan was 17 at the time.

  17. From what I recall they were all skate in and take forehand shots. No deeks. Frazee didn't cut down angles like the NHL goalies due in shootouts and the Canadians continually exploited it. The Canadian goalie had the same problem, but Kane shot it into his skate while attempting five hole on the only US chance to win the game. This one hurt worse than Holy Cross.

Your kidding me right. Scores three times, three different ways, in an absolute pressure packed situation and you dismiss it as no big deal. Your typical NHL superstar may have difficulty repeating this under the same situation.

  18. I think it all comes down to school, at least for TJ. If a guy doesn't mind school and has little difficulty in getting good grades, and also loves playing at UND, then I'd see him staying one more year. However if he hates the sign of seeing another textbook, I think hes a goner too. Why would you stay in college if all you were here for is hockey and hated trying to keep up good grades? Where instead you could ditch the books and pick up a fat check? I think oshie loves it here so I'd also say its a 50/50 chance of him leaving

I'm going to guess that Toews is having absolutely no problem keeping up with his studies. Check out some old posts about this kid if you think I'm kidding. Don't be suprised to see Toews graduate with his incoming class even after playing two full years of professional hockey. He is a very smart kid.

  19. Interesting statements. Let me know when the Red Wings offer you $150K a year to be their primary scout. As far as being knowledgeable, well, you lose a little credibility when you can't spell the word properly.

That would result in a minor pay increase with a whole lot of headaches and bad food.

Why would I even go there?
