  1. Does anyone know how many goals south will need to score to sway the tie breaker to their advantage? Of course this is assuming that both south and red river win out the rest of the way.

I believe South would have to scrore 3 goals and of course win to give them the advantage.

Red River plays Grafton one more time so they could regain that advantage .

The goals RR would need to score depends on Souths goals on Thursday.

If South would score 3 and win, that would give them the advantage buy a 1 goal.

RR would have to score 2 in their next meeting to win the tie breaker.

  2. Which is exactly what I said :D A number of kids I coached play or played for Shanley and I have seen several of their games over the past few years. When playing GF and other good teams they shorten the bench to two lines (at the most). When playing weaker teams they let the other kids get a chance to play more.

Shanley has a very nice program and will be much better now that they have a good feeder program established.

So, "When playing GF and other good teams they shorten the bench to two lines (at the most)". By saying at the most, which means no more than two, you imply that sometimes they just skate one line? That obviously makes no sense but I would guess you mean something else by that phrase. :D

  3. I was at the game last night. After the way the first 7 minutes went I thought we'd have to start playing in hell because it look as if it was gonna freeze over. In all seriousness Shanley did run all 3 lines consistently last night, in previous games the 3rd line would be lucky to see more than 2 shifts a period. Shanley controlled play for most of the night, it seemed like they came out a little too high on their horse which is expected playing a team of Wahpeton's caliber. I just don't get why when we play Wahpeton close everyone decides to pile on. I didn't hear anybody bashing Jamestown when they eeked out a 6-5 win or WF when they beat Wahpeton the same way. I guess we don't mind the programs who have been around for 25 years but expect Shanley who is still in its infancy to run away with the game. Shanley has a group of kids who work very hard and chose to stick this thing out and there was not a better sight I can remember then the smiles on their faces coming out of the locker room after beating Grand Forks Central. As long as the coaching staff stays there our program will continue to grow as long as SOME people don't try to cut their legs out from under them as soon as they don't WIN by enough. Sorry for this rant.

Nice post. Exactly, a nice program and it provides opportunities for more kids to compete. Nice coaching staff as well and I hope they stick with it as there seems to be help coming down the Shanley pipeline. You confirmed my point that Shanley does play all lines, although differentially, in their games. From what I have seen they have 2 and one-half lines at times - and of course, they have converted Marc Harrie to defense to help out back there.

  4. I was not at the game, but knowing how Shanley typically plays, they were likely playing some of their players who do not normally see ice time. Since bringing hockey back, Shanley has played no more than 2 lines against the good teams, and have given the other kids a chance against weaker competition. Personally I think it is great the way Shanley runs their program, it gives all the kids a chance to compete.

After further thought I have to question your perception of how Shanley runs their program. Initially, Tim Gravalin and the Burgraffs coached the team. Now Mark Pivetz is the coach. Although I have seen only 3-4 Shanley games a season from the beginning of their recent program I have to question the assessment that "Since bringing hockey back, Shanley has played no more than 2 lines against the good teams,....." No more than two lines? Although that has happened (2 line rotation), that does not square with what I have seen as a universal rule on how they manage players over the past - 4 to 5 years. But for the sake of discussion let's assume that what you say is true. Shanley is typically at the bottom/lower half of the conference and with the exception of a year or two and some upset wins, has struggled. Certainly they are this year, despite their current record, and also did last year. So if they only play their top two lines against good competition and play the others against weaker teams then they are not doing much to develop their players. With all due respect I think your perceptions of their program are off base. They run a nice program and I don't think they would do what you say. Oftentimes when it is not possible to win a game the 3rd and 4th liners get a chance too. Unless you have not clearly explained yourself I would have to say that what you have said about Shanley is not a positive as it really does not give all of the kids a chance to compete in many games at all because they have struggled (had close games) with the competition. Is there someone out there with some knowledge who can give another independent view on this discussion.

Having seen Shanely play several times this season I would have to disagree with your assessment that Shanley was playing some of their players who do not normally see ice time. Shanley has no kids that do not normally see ice time from what I have seen this season. They all play because they do not have that many players. They have had a challenge even getting three distinct lines together because of low numbers (They lost underclassmen Trevor Anderson 2 years ago and Kris Graalum this year). Shanley has also been short due to player absence (vs Red River) and an injury (Thomas). Are there any others who have actually seen Shanley play and can comment on this? If what you say is true and Shanley indeed gives kids a chance mainly when they are against weaker competition then the weaker kids don't play hardly at all because of the games that Shanley has won, nearly all have been by a goal or two (5 of 7 - plus they had a tie). Their biggest win was a 4-0 game against Red Lake Falls. How many Shanley games have you seen this year?

Is there anyone who actually attended the game who can comment as that is the category of person that the question was directed to.

  6. It's funny to me that you would say his stock is lower because of one penalty shot, in the first game of the year none the less. I'd say his stock would be improved had the refs not made the weak penalty shot call and had they not called the third goal, which clearly never crossed the line, a goal. It's stupid to point at one play as irrelevant as that when looking at a season long award.

Here we have a Grand Forks fan/player/whatever complaining about the refs impacting the game/career of a Red River player? What is this world coming to. I thought that only Fargo people complained about the refs.

  7. Does anyone have high school scores from around the state tonight? Bob Gillen's site indicated that Red River and Central were tied 1-1 at one point in the game.

Central and Red River were tied 1-1 in the third and North beat Shanley 3-0. First time Shanley has been shut out this year.

  8. I think North has just taken over the riens in the fight for hosting the play-in game. They may be doing this intentionaly as that is the only team they have success agianst, and want that extra game to pad their stats.

For the stat padding you got the city right but the school wrong. It is the other Fargo Public school that pads their stats on the teams that are in the play-in situation.

  9. To any GF people who might suggest that South is classless to beat Wahpeton 26-0, I would like to remind you that Central beat West Fargo 20-0 back in the 1983-84 season. I realize that's six fewer goals, but still enough to suggest they were running the score up. It's just unfortunate that teams that far apart in talent are scheduled to play each other.

In 83-84 Central was classless. In 05 South is classless. Some people learned in youth hockey how not to exploit a relatively helpless opponent. Apparently the lesson was never taught in some parts of the state. There are no excuses for this. Class or the lack of it is not something tied to where you live. There are people all over who have it and also those who do not. This is not a geography issue.

  10. Apparently South's top two lines didn't play in the third period. That being said, Wahps lucky it was only 26..

Wahpeton put a forward in as goalie in the third period - it was 20-0 after two periods and they poured it on the forward/goalie with 5 more goals. South's top line players kept putting points up in the third period -check the box score in the local papers - . They even pounded in their 25th goal with a minute and a half left in the game - just to make sure the Wahps would not mount a comeback.

  11. Hey sooperfan - like you I read this forum regularly but am not always moved to make a post. I noticed the following post that you made earlier this year. You ripped an individual for criticizing a player and then not identifying themselves. In effect, running someone down behind the protection of a screen name. You had a word for that person - "gutless." Well, the same label applies to you as you write negatives about people like Mark Bry yet hide behind the protection of a screen name. If you are so honorable then step forward and back up your post with your name. If not then you are in the same cowardly category as the person you called "gutless."

Quote from sooperfan's post earlier this year: "Sounds like you are probably the horrible one and pretty gutless i might add, that you claim to have played with him for a long time and yet don't identify yourself andjoined this forum just to rip on the kid. Either that or you are just plain jealous. I can assure you there has been plenty of dumb plays made by several Red River players including Hill, Galbreath, and I'm sure yourself."

  12. Sorry guys, I just couldn't stay out of this one. I think WF is a great team.

I thought you said a few weeks ago that you were through posting on this site (see post #179). You indicated that you were not the person listed as the screen name that you use. Something should be done about this because it is inappropriate for an individual to represent themself as a person that they are not.

  13. Well Beehlersweird, dont feel bad i can say i have as well.  looks like your the odd man out Squires.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Billy - why don't you and Beehlersweird clean up your act. I'm not so sure Tom would be impressed with your dialogue.

  14. Once again, Minot breaks my heart....but then I'd been saying they would break my heart all week long, so I guess I expected it....:silly:

Anybody want to give me a quick recap of the game please??  Thank you.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You can go under www.ralphengelstadarena.com and find the complete game sheet. It will give you a complete game summary.

  15. Whats happening to Stahl here? Letting in 6 goals so far...

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Ifyou rate it by quality scoring chances which is how they are doing it on the Ralph official scoring sheet his perc. is actually better than Shanes.

  16. If a goalie faces 100 shots, and stops 98 of them, I would have to say he's doing something right. You can not fault him for playing on the same team as another very solid goaltender who is a senior.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

There are a number of very good goaltenders in the state, and he would be one of them. This whole conversation started because it was stated he would start for any other team except South in the state, and that is simply not true.

  17. Although he has only played 8 games, his stats, 97.6% Save Pct. and a GAA of under .4 speak for themselves.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The stats do speak for themselves as it relates directly to who he played . He did have a nice game against Minot as I was there. I think he had somewhere in the 30's in that game.I think almost half of his total came in the Minot game. However, 1 save against Shanley, does not prove him a top goaltender in the state.
  18. rosendahl would start for any other team in the state other than red river and south. that includes minot

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I find it interesting you rate him so high. Out of the few games he played in, only two of the games were against above .500 teams of which he lost one and tied the other.
