  1. Talk about getting over yourself. You really think NDSU needs UND? Thats laughable.

Your second comment on the grand scheme of things is absolutely correct. Neither are or ever will be an Ohio State or UCLA.

What's laughable is you not understanding the overall big picture of UND and NDSU playing each other, or you are not grasping it if you do understand it. Think of the economic impact for both cities when the teams play eachother and the added attendance(NDSU will not have a football game in the future that will consistently sell out like it would against UND). Like I've said before, open up your mind a little bit, look at the big picture of things instead of trying to shun UND because apparently NDSU is "that much better" and doesn't need UND. Whenever a NDSU poster says that, it just shows how ignorant they are to the big picture IMO.

  2. The way it sounds, if UND didn't force the FSSN to televise a couple of football & basketball games every year, they wouldn't. How many people turn on channel 44(or whatever it is) on a Saturday night in January to watch the Sioux play Augie in basketball? You could probably count them on two hands.

A Saturday Night in North Dakota in January, I'd say your estimate is most likely way off regarding the number of people who tune in to watch a basketball game. Let's see: Walk in -20 below weather to see a game or watch it from the confines of your 72 degree heated house. My guess is that a game like that on TV actually hurts attendance figures. But that's just me.

  3. Well DakotaDan,

Look at the papers tomorrow. You will know what Im talking about then. The Fargo Forum is the largest circulation paper in the state in the state's largest city. Home of the NDSU Bison!! Wont be much hockey news tomorrow!!

Why would there be hockey news tomorrow when the season hasn't even started? Unless something significant happend, it should be a relatively quiet and uneventful weekend around the area involving college hockey. Your point doesn't make much sense right now again to me. You just keep repeating the same, obvious comments about the Fargo Forum. Should I start saying the same thing about the Grand Forks Herald? It's "Home of the Sioux!! Won't be much Bison basketball news tomorrow." Pointless.

PS-Please answer my questions. I await your response(s). Also, Don't start smack towards one guy when people have asked legitimate questions that you refuse to answer.

  4. There is no problem with you backing out of the NDSU games. But why insist on playing NDSU now? They dont want to play you right now. They want you to lie in your own bed.

Why your AD and you fans are so excited about getting back on the NDSU Bison Schedules is easy to see. The Fabulous Fargo Dome is the largest venue in the State. You just dont get the attention up there. Hockey has great broadcast coverage but it doent get the coverage like BISON football, at least not in the Fargo Forum.

I would never say the hockey wasnt big. My point is the need for your football team and basketball teams to get to Fargo. This is the largest and most covered sports market in the State and you guys apparently need it badly.

Responding to your first paragraph, if I were NDSU, I wouldn't play UND in any sports right now that could possibly hurt their playoff chances(i.e. football). NDSU is in the same predicament that UND was in 4(?) years ago when NDSU went D-1. It did more harm than good to play eachother. Looking ahead though, if everything pans out as some predict on here, if UND can get enough D-1AA football games in 2008 to be considered a D-1AAcounter(I think that's the right terminology) why wouldn't they want to play eachother? It's the best option for both schools and both cities.

As far as your quote about UND hockey not getting the same coverage in the Fargo Forum when compared to NDSU football, What did you really expect? Are you surprised by that? I would hope that the hometown paper of each particular school would choose to run more information on its particular school. That's pretty obvious to everyone I would assume.

  5. NDSU did play you in baseball after their move. I didnt see NDSU getting sued so Im sure no contract was broken when the Bison decided to play against teams in its own division and drop you. Possibly you have a copy of the contract?

Not playing NDSU hurt them, but they are past that. You may never recover if you dont get back on the Bison schedules. Its tough to be bigtime in this state without playing NDSU. I think the chances of seeing UMary in the Fabulous Fargo Dome and at the BSA are greater then seeing you guys. In fact I think UMary was in Fargo last year for a BB game?

But I digress. Carry on with the history rewrites. Please dont forget to explain the playoff ramifications of a DI NDSU on your BB, vollyball, softball and soccer teams.

I edited my post. I stated "verbal agreement" at the beginning of my post and mistakenly put "verbal contract" at the end. Anyways, this statement of yours:

NDSU did play you in baseball after their move. I didnt see NDSU getting sued so Im sure no contract was broken when the Bison decided to play against teams in its own division and drop you.

Welcome to the world of one of the smack-talking NDSU fans on this board. You can always see it from your point of view, but you fail to broaden your point of view to think outside the box a little bit. Re-Read the post I highlighted of yours. It's ok for you to "drop us and play against teams in your division" but when we decline to play NDSU becasue want to play against teams in our division, that makes us the bad school here? I don't understand your reasoning and/or logic.

  6. Are you serious? You may have had an excuse for the football situation, but what about the other sports? There were no playoff implications in BB or softball or vollyball. What you are saying might be a little more believable if it hadnt been for the outpouring of ill will from the university.

You have made your bed, now sleep in it.

What about baseball? That's what started this whole downfall about UND and NDSU not playing in any sports. When UND decided not to play NDSU in football, NDSU pulled the plug on its verbal agreement to play UND in baseball through its transition period. If UND had done the same thing to NDSU, do you think NDSU would be willing to play UND in all other sports after UND rescinded on a verbal agreement regarding a particular sport? I think not.

  7. This won't be just great for football, but bball as well.

And when NDSU gets a hockey team, it will be great for that too.

Serious Question Here MplsBison...What's your(MplsBison) timeline for NDSU having a hockey team? How long til they are competitive? How long til UND and NDSU play a meaningful(non-exhibition) game? What conference will they be in? Again, all serious questions.

  8. BTW, the various factors the Herald is talking about are 6 other I-AA games on the Sioux schedule before the Bison agree to a game. If UND has 7 I-AA games in 2008, they become a I-AA counter. We're desperate for strength of schedule in 2008 since we'll be competing against 110+ other I-AA schools for the 8 at-large playoff slots with no autobid safety blanket.

Personally, I don't have strong feelings about the game. I'd rather wait until Kupchella's gone, but if it happens, it happens. I only hope the contract is for a 2 for 1; you owe us a game and our stadium seats 7000 more.

I can understand why NDSU fans don't want NDSU to agree to play UND because of all the past issues where UND wouldn't play them because at the time it hurt our SOS among other issues, but to say that UND owes NDSU a game in Fargo because NDSU made a leap to another division is rediculous IMO. Like so many Bison fans have said on here before: "You made your bed, Now Sleep in it." I would almost guarantee that NDSU would not have played UND had we made the jump first instead of NDSU, simply because of the SOS issues in the past and how it effected every team in the same situation. Every NDSU fan needs to quit living in the past with this huge chip on their shoulder towards UND and look into the future. Hell, get to the present at least.

  9. i agree, UND's recruits are, in my opinion, better than umtc even...because the recruits that are coming in are not going to leave after this year... ej and okposo are 1 year and 2 year at most(respectively). and i also agree with others "dont put too much in these"

As big a UND Sioux fan as I am, I don't see how you can say that our recruits this year are better than Minnesota's. I like the player's we brought in, because they will the voids that we needed to fill the most. Sure, our player's will most likely be around far longer than some of their recruits, but on talent and accolades alone, Minnesota's class is the best this year. Whether that makes them the best team will remain to be seen. We'll see come April. Live with it and let's move on.

  10. Granted, not being #1 in recruiting may be somewhat of a let down, but if you concede that Minnesota has the best recruiting class in the country, I think all the other teams could be placed in any particular order. Plus we have a lot of "unknown" recruits I would say, players that people wouldn't have read/heard a lot about. That could be a blessing in disguise. I love when people place us lower so we can prove them wrong. And it's INCH...Need I say more.

  11. Hak fan, no offense but those are some lame excuses. You said that Nodak was an offensive powerhouse and that Wisconsin doesnt score. Now it's that Wisconsin had older players, blah blah blah.

Wisconsin isn't the team people think they are no matter how many lame excuses people give.

You have to remember that those early Eaves years were with the crappy players that Sauer recruited. Now that Eaves has his players it's a lot different.

Not trying to be "that guy" or anything like that, Chuck Schwartz, but maybe the wording that people are using is incorrect in comparing teams. Wisconsin scored 4 goals or more 10 times out of 20 games(50%) in the 1st half of year, while UND scored 4 goals or more 7 times out of 22 games(32%). Just looking at the 2nd half of the year only(2006), Wisconsin scored 4 goals or more 9 times out of 23 games(40%). UND scored 4 goals or more 16 times out of 24 games(67%). Wisconsin was just flat-out more consistent last year. Now, I'm not saying that UND is an offensive powerhouse, but you can't argue that Wisconsin was extremely experienced last year and didn't have to play half of the year to figure out who or where their scoring would come from, while as UND had to learn a lot about how to play in the WCHA and who would score for them. I think these statistics show somewhat what I believe most people are trying to say on here: Once UND figured some things out on their team, they became a more explosive team than Wisconsin. The stats don't lie. Wisconsin was extremely experienced last year and didn't have to play the first half of the year to figure out who or where their scoring would come from.

Maybe I'm off base too Chuck. Feel free to correct, contradict, and bash any and all of my comments above.

Back to the topic at hand: Potential Sioux Recruits

  12. I do not want to see poster so far up JP a$$ saying he earned it because of the way he played!!!!!!

He played for one of the best teams in the country. Answer one ? is Brigg any different the JP. No, both put up good # on great teams and have 0 rings.

It's not fair to base your comparison on who was a better goalie by the number of rings he won on a particular team I don't think. How many great goalies are there that have never won the Stanley Cup or an NCAA title? I'm sure the list is quite long. That's just a poor comparison.

  13. Can anyone who was there provide a summary of the day? How was tailgating? Do their fans get into the game? Looked like the stadium is decent, but very very old. Sioux fans seemed really loud on the radio, must have been awesome to witness the win.

Here we go, 7 beers deep, but here we go....Tailgating for the game was ok, but really scattered. We talked to a few people from UNI and it seemed like there were 3 different areas for people to tailgate. The one closest to the dome was for the most important or VIP people. Then you had to walk about 5 minutes away from the arena and there were students as well as the casual fan playing a lot of bean bag toss. I also heard that across the road by the dorms is where all the students in the dorms tailgate/party. Just 3 distinctly different lots I guess to me. Not well organized/grouped together IMO.

Their fans didn't really seem to be "into" the game til the 3rd quarter when they realized that we were legit and scoring frequently and often. Every fan base gets excited at a big play/defensive stop/3rd down, but that was about it. Frankly, there wasn't a whole lot to cheer about in the first half for them. As the game got closer, the crowd got louder, but it wasn't deafening by any means. Again, just my opinion.

The reason we were really loud was because the guy holding the mike-thingy was right below and would occasionly turn around towards us and hold the mike up to "get the fans back in North Dakota an understanding of how loud we really were". That was according to him after the game.

It was an unbelievable game in my eyes, like I've stated before, one of the 3-4 best UND games I've every attended. I'm only 23 and only can remember as far back at 1990 or so, but it was that great of a football game. I was impressed with the quality of play of both teams in the last quarter. Everytime they scored in the 4th quarter, I looked to the Sioux fan standing next to me, Ray, and we both said that we had plenty of time to score. You could see it in the players' eyes. Once we got to 14-3 or even 14-6 at halftime, they realized they had an opportunity to do something special to me. Their posture/eyes/focus never wavered. They always believed. That's the one thing I notice about this team early on this year. They never got down. Never Gave Up. Never Quit. That's what I love about UND Football and UND Athletics in general.

  14. A UNI fan who was at the game stated on anygivensaturday.com that of the 11,000 fans at the game about 1,000 of them were UND fans, so now I've heard from 200 to 1,000 UND fans at the game, anyone know for sure? Just curious as to UND's showing.

No way did we have 1,000 fans there. I was going to give us around 250-300 people when I looked at our section. Give or Take a few obviously, but no way did we have 1,000 fans.

  15. They swipe your ID to verify that you're a student at UND at the current time. All you would have to do is find an ID for your buddy that looks like him as well. No one will question it. Pretty Simple.

  16. Another quote from one of their fans on Panthernation.com

"I was very impressed with their fans. At many times they were louder than the 10,000 Panther fans that were there. We need to use the noise as a 12th player!"

  17. My Thoughts on the games after returning from Cedar Falls, IA:

The thing I love about making road trips, especially longer ones, is that you only get the true "die-hard" fans at the games. Yes, there weren't as many people in the stands as I had hoped, but every UND in the building was screaming and yelling the entire game. I'm only 23, but that was probably the 3rd-4th best game i've ever been apart of. Beating NDSU in '93 was my #1, winning the nickel for the final time against NDSU, and possibly the UC-Davis play-off game in 2001. Other than those 3 games, we had the loudest/most passionate 200 fans in the building.

    Other Thoughts:

Our offense took a HUGE step forward yesterday. We put 35 points on the board in only 23 minutes...Amazing statistic, minus the negative effect it had on our defense by them having to play nearly 37 minutes in a "sauna" aka the UNI-Dome. In years past, it seemed like we'd be content almost to a point with getting within field goal range and then pulling on the reins of the offense. The whole game we went for plays, getting 9 plays of 17 yards or more. We never settled, always had the foot on the gas. We pressured them, but yet were composed all the time. We never got down. When we lost the lead, every offensive player had "the look" in their eyes and you knew they were gonna score. It was almost magical in a sense. The defense looked worn out by the middle of the 4th quarter, could have been because of the amount of time on the field, the temperature inside, or just the 2nd game of the year and not being into complete game shape yet.

Other than that, we will have an explosive offense for the next couple years with Chappel and Strouth in the back field and Dressler at WR. It put so much pressure on the UNI defense the entire, they never let up. Our speed was scary on offense. Our defense created pressure/havoc in the last 2-3 possessions while only rushing 3-4 guys. We could be in for a treat at the end of this year.

Let's get ready for Winona State now.

  18. To anyone who is connected to the case...

Are we any closer to actually submitting a complaint to the court against the NCAA? I was hoping we would have done this before the football and hockey seasons started so we could angle for an injunction against the NCAA in their application of the faulty policy on nicknames. Just looking for some feedback from knowledgeable sources...

    BOBIWABUCHIFAN

Taking a direct quote from our very own athletic director on Saturday while tail-gating at UNI:

"In October, coming to a federal district court near you, will be a case involving the State of North Dakota vs. NCAA"

We shall hear news in the coming weeks.

  19. I have heard of the SEC. You're right, it isn't even close. The Big 10 is way tougher. That's why they annually place 6 or 7 of their teams in the top 25 rankings. The SEC is top heavy with 3 and sometimes 4 very strong teams, but the rest of them are mediocre at best. In the Big 10, almost anybody can beat anybody most years with maybe just one or two teams at the bottom who are not competitive. If you want to say the top two teams in the SEC are better than the top two teams in the Big 10, that may be true (some years). But the 5th, 6th, and 7th best teams in the Big 10 are almost always vastly superior to the 5th, 6th, and 7th best teams in the SEC. That's why it's so hard for a Big 10 team to go through a season undefeated. They have so many difficult conference games, as opposed to the top schools in the SEC who breeze through their conference with relative ease.

Here's the Top 7 of the SEC conference according to me, in no particular order: LSU, Florida, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina.

Here's the Top 7 of the Big 10 conference according to me, in no particular order: Michigan, Iowa, Ohio St., Penn St, Wisconsin, Michigan St., Minnesota/Purdue.

The top 7 of the SEC is substantially deeper and more competitive. Sure, every conference has its beating stick(Illinois/Indiana, Ole Miss/Kentucky) But to say the Big 10 is that much better than the SEC is just you not being able to come to grips that the SEC is a better conference overall. "The top schools in the SEC breeze through their conference schedule with relative ease"...Please take a look at some statistics before you post something so blatantly wrong.

  20. So if you expect Oshie, Toews and Duncan to each have around 20 goals and you are predicting the team will score 175 goals in total, who is going to score the other 106 goals?

This is just me, but I would expect:

    Porter to have 10-15 goals

    Fabian to have 10ish goals

    Kozek to have 10-20 goals

    Kaip to have 5-10 goals

    Vandevelde to have 10ish goals

    Lee to have 5-10 goals

    Forney to have 10ish goals

All other defensemen to have 10-15 goals

Miller, Watkins, Foyt, and Zajac to have 10-20 goals

Now assuming every player I listed reaches the middle ground of my goals for them, that would put UND very close to having 175 goals scored for the season, assuming Oshie, Towes, and Duncan contribute 20ish goals each.

  21. Any addition member added to the BSC will split the conference revenue up just the same as any other member.

SUU is in their footprint and gives them a 10th football member if that's what they're looking for.

They have 57 scholarships so they are a good football team. They're committed to athletics.

FYI - The number of scholarships a school offers in a particular sport doesn't make them a good team. By your statement, since the UND women's hockey team is fielding nearly the maximum number of scholarships possible, they are a good team. That just doesn't fly.
