  1. I have Friday taken care of, I'm a loyal Sioux fan have watched every game home and away this season and monitor this forum daily. I will also only pay the honest prices that I have seen here recently. Pat Sweeney is sometimes too much but I will be fully willing to listen to him on TV rather than pay a ridiculous amount... If there are any great Sioux fans out there needing to liquidate their Saturday night tickets, at a reasonable price, please PM me... THANKS n Happy New Year!

  3. Really? Really? Of all the great reasons to choose to go to the University of North Dakota, you would not attend UND if its athletic teams were called the North Dakota Roughriders, but you would attend if the teams were called the North Dakota Roughnecks? As much as I personally dislike Roughnecks as a nickname for the athletic teams, it would not stop me from choosing UND. To pass on the opportunities that can come as a result of having the University of North Dakota on your resume because of a nickname just seems short-sighted.

    not to mention gophers!

Didn't a guy named Corban Knight start his Fighting Sioux obsession by a cool hat he saw at an airport or something... the fighting sioux hat, which eventually led to being a fighting sioux? Obviously hes talented but would he have gone to UND before another school without that cool logo and nickname becoming his favorite for no apparent reason? at 9 or 10 years old or whatever he was???

  4. The University of North Dakota adopted the nickname Roughriders in 2011. The nickname honors the brave men and women who serve in our military forces. They epitomize hard work, a fighting spirit, and winning battles. They defend our freedom and our way of life. Please be loud and proud and exhibit good sportsmanship as you cheer on your team tonight.

-10 for you... and by no means am i bashing on our armed forces... +1 putting it this way, makes me almost breathe a little bit about that EVER being UND's name... total = -9

  5. And yet people go to school in places where their nickname is Cornhuskers, Tar Heels, Sooners, Jayhawks, Anteaters, Billikens, Boilermakers, Boll Weevils, Catamounts Banana Slugs, Salukis, etc. Do I need to go on? Some of those are some huge schools. But these are some bad nicknames. A nickname is going to be a very small factor in someone deciding on a school. Plus, as these nickname threads have shown, there is a very wide discrepancy in what people like and don't like in a nickname.

It's pretty much a loosing argument for myself, or anyone who disagrees with me.. and the only way everyone can be happy is with some type of vote. Not just sbohe, not phil jackson, not R. kelly, but everyone... and yes that will never happen either..

  6. UND Red Peppers - something every UND student & alum for the past 50 years has in common

Not even joking waaaaaaaaaay better than Roughriders... truly... which is also truly sad... Roughriders may be popular on a thread called North Dakota Roughriders... but it will never be the new nickname. "young grasshoppers" that now attend UND and pay tuition will A, dislike the name, and B, I'd never chose to go to a college that was just name the Roughriders.. once again, maybe we don't need a cool/trendy name but something this simple can attract or deter people from UND.. People come here because of our tradition, not many people come to UND on the notion of education alone.. believe it or not kids are attracted to places for other reasons than education.. i.e. nicknames, sports, drinking, etc.. may sound stupid but its the truth. And I bet if this forum had more younger people I could get many to agree..

  7. I've already said, multiple times, that I didn't think either of those would work. I just have different reasons. I would probably like Roughriders if Red River High School didn't have it. I just don't see a point in causing more nickname issues in the same city, and it would cause issues. You don't bite the hand that feeds you. A lot of people that support UND are also Red River supporters. There are people that would look at it as if UND were stealing the nickname from Red River. UND fans should realize the anger that can result from having a nickname taken. And I believe that Cavalry would be looked at as a back-handed swipe at Native Americans for losing the Fighting Sioux nickname. Again, don't cause more issues if you don't have to. Finding a unique nickname will greatly reduce that possibility.

I apologize for not recognizing that you had disagreed with those names also... very good points..

  8. Picking something that is hip and cool is usually a bad idea because it never stays hip and cool. It normally becomes outdated and laughable pretty quickly. All you have to do is look at trends in clothing or music. History or something solid is a normally a better choice if you want something to last long term. That's why a theme using settlers, farmers, ranchers, rivers, Old West or something similar works great. Aerospace, oil or energy and other similar current themes may work because they will have some longevity and aren't just a flavor of the month type thing.

I agree with your first few sentences... however... roughriders and calvary... negative

  9. Stay away from cool and trendy or you'll end up with (Jurassic Park in the theatres era) Raptors of the NBA.

And when the last time a Minuteman was seen strolling through Boston/Amherst or a Volunteer hiking through Knoxville? Seen many Tar Heels (nickname of NC Civil War unit) marching through Chapel Hill lately? Jayhawks is a Civil War term also.

Good points but roughriders/calvary is NOT a good replacement name and i'll fight that til my death. I'm not saying we should be the Transformers or something incredibly stupid in that "trendy, cool" way.. just something new and unheard of that is cool.. which I think we can figure out.

  10. My criteria for a nickname:

    1) Fighting Sioux, first and foremost.

If that is not possible, then:

    2) native to North Dakota or the very immediate region

    3) name not in use by ANY other team, high school, college, pro, amateur, etc.

    4) symbol/emblem not in use by ANY other team, anywhere

    5) If at all possible, continue with the Kelly Green theme (and the optional black uniforms for hockey)

    6) does not involve ANY input from RHHT, Phil Jackson, Leah Jeannotte, or any other anti-Sioux nickname supporter

The name I still prefer involves Nokotas (Fighting, Wild, etc.) but I am open to other suggestions. Approval of the Nokota Horse Conservancy may be needed.

Roughriders or Rough Riders - NO

Amen, Roughriders is a horrible name.... HORRIBLE... were not in Medora... North Dakota isn't TR National Park.. taking the name of the local high school is also non-cool... Like I mentioned in a different thread. Roughriders is also way outdated.. whats wrong with a name that represents the times and is COOL... I travel as a salesman around ND.. and I can't think of the last time I saw a band of cowboys running along the side of the road on their horses... its insane to think this name would be ok. As if loosing the name that others and myself are obsessed with wasn't enough.. replacing it with something as bogus as this would equal, or possibly even top the pain that's already being felt...

  11. Former Sioux student and track athlete Erin McBrair is married to Cowboys punter Mat McBriar. ( A couple of years ago, the UND punter came to Detroit Lakes to work out with him). He leads the NFL in punting and she wants people to vote for him for the Pro Bowl. His net average is 42.4 yds/ punt which leads the league. She is also one of the NFL wives on VH1 which is a bad reality show but she is donating part of the compensation for doing the show to the Detroit Lakes High School track team to buy 100 new hurdles. Her high school track coach was Mike Labine former Sioux Track All -American. Vote early and vote often.

LINK? I'm sure I could find it too but just to have it on here?

UNDSID tweet says all are ok but need a new bus

Rear ended stopped at a railroad crossing by a smaller car... fell asleep after long day of hauling beets... 50 mph into back of our good bus..
