  1. The thing I find perplexing, though, is that considering the scholarship advantage for the NCC vs. the NSIC should be roughtly equal for the men's programs AND the women's programs, why is it that on the women's side, the NCC has a 20-5 record vs. the NSIC, whereas the men are roughly .500 vs. that conference? I just don't see why it is that the women have more or less been able to maintain their dominance over the NSIC (and the DAC and other NAIA programs) over the years, but on the men's side, there's not much difference anymore. I'm not sure there's really any one answer, but it's hard to believe how far the NCC has fallen in men's basketball.

Is there much of a difference in scholorships anymore? I mean think of basketball in comparison with Football. In basketball you need to have three guys that can put the ball in the hoop and a handful of roll players. Football you need to have way more studs. ......I think the NSIC is catching up because you don't need as many tough players as you do in football.....it's a numbers game. You can divey up scholorships easier in basketball amongst those roll players and give your studs the full rides.

I also believe that the NCC was never that dominate of a conference for men's basketball. Not on the national scale. UND has had many very good teams and for a good period dominated the NCC. SDSU had a great run, but their gone. NDSU had a year or two but competitive for the most part....also gone. UNC never really much, much like SU....gone. UNO has never struck me as a basketball power, USD has 10 outright titles but what on the national scale? Augustana is completly rebuilding but not really dominate ever. UMD is new to the league. Mankato has been really solid as of late but yet to win an outright title.

The NCC only has 9 final four finishes in it's history----only three of those still remain in the conference and two are UND's. I think we have to realize that the NCC has not gotten any better, probably has gone down in quality with the loss of the SU's etc....The NSIC has gotten much better, recruited better, committed more money and have made up the difference. The NCC is not what it once was and the NSIC etc... have caught up!

  2. Wow the women struggled tonight, did any one listen to the game? The sioux won by 40 something last time they played just a few weeks ago, I understand they shot very poorly, but what did Crookston do to narrow the margin so much. It makes it look as if maybe they are not progressing the way they should be.

Looks to me like it might have been one of those "trap" games. A nothing to lose UofM Crook team and playing on the road in a pretty mild environment. The ladies could have come out with less focus than necessary and maybe the Coaching staff can use this as a learning tool for the future. I wouldn't worry to much. Crookston isn't great but they do have some talent. The older Wahlin can play along with Karna Plaine from Hatton. They aren't a terrible team..........but not 4 points within the Sioux.

  3. Impressive numbers. Hopefully she can step right in and contribute immediately next year. As for the other UND recruits, I believe Seay is averaging 21.5 ppg through two games. I'm not sure on Bergan, but she's playing on a very weak team this year so her numbers may be down from what they were last year.

Stats won't show what Bergan can do. She won't be a scorer. She's going to have a job much like Tonia Jones did. Be quick, Play Defense for the length of the floor and get the team into the offense.

  4. Very easy to criticize after the fact. Yes, Nelson put up really good numbers at May Port CG, but was he better then Tommy Leikas at the time? If I'm not mistaken too, Mr. Leikas had to walk on to UND as well. After watching both of them play numerous games in HS, you would have almost had to flip a coin to see which one would be more successful at the college level. I just don't think Craig Nelson is better then Tommy.

To me in high school is wasn't even close. Nelson was a better all around player. Tommy led a very good North team to a great season, but as a next level player some things didn't equate. He wasn't a true point. He didn't pass a whole lot, rarely led a transition opportunity where he didn't score. Also, his shot is slow. He is a fantastic shooter, it looks odd, but it's a great shot. The problem is, at the college level his release must be quicker. I think he's realized that now, and doesn't force it as much as I thought he would.

Nelson in HS was a complete player that made everyone around him better, heck he even got Kyle Nelson a DII scholorship. That kid isn't a scholorship player if not for height. He led transition opportunities and looked to the wing. He played terrific team and helpside D and was money down the strech when it was needed. He was a player that could've done what he wanted when he wanted but was a true team leader and floor general first and a scorer second.

I guess these are my opinions after watch both of them quite a bit during HS. Arguements could be that they played a different levels. I guess when I watched them though....I felt that Nelson was going to be very solid. Plus he's the son of a great coach.....he knows the game very well. My last example is of the Lion's game Nelson's senior year. He clearly showed he was the best player on the floor. Koenig was there too and it wasn't even close. If you had to start a team from those 24 kids, you would've had to start with Nelson every time.....again just my opinion.

  5. Men did look good tonite..Seemed to find some chemistry..Maybe just growing up a little before our eyes..Passed the BALL!...Well, Seemed to reconize Double Teams and Find the open Man..It was refreshing and Fun to watch them compete...Great Job!

I wasn't able to view the game. Is Gutter's ankle still bugging him? If not why the reduced minutes. It seems like he might be that horse in the post that this team might need.

    Only 7 TO's.........GREAT improvement

  6. Add Gilby Sanchez to the point guard list, local kid who played juco at whap science. Also at the time Northern made its run was a shooting guard from Bagley Minnesota, he was lights out!!!!

Where I know Gilby is a quality basketball player I don't think that he is a DII player. If you look at what he's done at MSU and what Lingren did.....no real comparison. However if Gilby is hot.....shut off the lights before he does.

  7. I realize Nelson was a very good player in high school. I would have liked to see him at UND. But it would seem that he simply wasn't recruited very hard, if at all, by UND, or for that matter anybody else in the NCC. To the best of my knowledge, it was a similar story with all the other ND kids in the 90's who flourished at Northern. Perhaps the Northern coaching staff simply has a better eye for talent than most coaches, I don't know. I guess my real question is whether Northern is actually winning recruiting battles with USD, UND, etc., or whether, as speculated above, that they simply have a better eye for talent and are winning with players who may have been overlooked by bigger schools?

I guess I would go with the "better eye for talent" observation along with possibly a proven ability to do more with less talent.

I guess you have to understand that Don Meyer is a SPECIAL coach. He is one of only a couple DII coaches that are known by every "big time" coach. Don Meyer's Coaching Acadamy hosts such people as Pat Summit, Coach K, John Wooden, Bill Self etc.... That may also be a recruiting tool, but simply the fact that he is recognized as one of the nations better coaches. That may sway your answer towards doing more with less talent or as I kind of mentioned earlier.....the right talent.

Meyer seems to be a system guy.find the right players for his system. Glas lately seems to be attempting to pick up whatever JUCO guy that he can find to fill a viod....but their is no real consistency. The only real consistent system players have been the "stout post" like Ryp. Just my observation.

I also just noticed on the NSU website that they have signed four players early and if you read about those four they are all winners. Back to Back football titles for two of them. State apperances in basketball. Two time state champ in Minn basketball. Maybe that is something...........knowing how to win is important....

  8. If my memory is correct Jeff was a McDonalds All-American. Every DI coach in the country knew who he was.

It all starts before that....Boeschee was invited to Nike All American Camp before his senior year. He made his name with Howard Pully's AAU team. At Nike Camp he dropped 40 in a big game and that is what turned Roy William's head enough to offer a scholorship. Williams then attended at least on game Jeff's senior year at Fargo North. He stopped for a bite at The Shack in north Fargo. He left an autographed picture. Basically based on AAU and Nike Camp performances he was selected to play in the McDonald's game......however that was after he had signed with KU.

    (That's the story I remember)

  9. I think it's interesting that Northern has only one transfer on the roster, and he barely plays. I have always been under the impression that Northern gets mostly high school recruits thought to be not quite good enough for the NCC schools to heavily recruit, e.g. Craig Nelson and Adam Grant. Is this still the case, or were some of their better players considered to be very good prospects coming out of high school? Anybody know?

Northern State is a place where you go if you love basketball. Don Meyer is an amazing coach that requires that you imerse yourself in the game. I don't think that the talent that NSU gets is less than NCC. I might have been that way before he got there but no more. It is also possible that Meyer will take those players that have what it takes mentally to play and make them better. I believe he is more of a system coach. He'll get what he want to fit the way he wants to coach.

On your other statement. Craig Nelson was the best basketball player in the State his senior year. If you watch area high school basketball......he brought the most complete game of any player around that year. During the Lion's game he was without a doubt the best player in the building. That included Koenig. Nelson won't wow you with scoring but he will run your offense, run the break and lead your defense. He just joins the list of point guards that Glas missed out on. (Thompson, Lingren)

  10. Mac....Maybe the best Young Coach in the Nation..Last year rated by USA Today..Top 5 up and Coming Coaches.....To prove this point don't look at his UND record..Look at his Wayne State Record..that program is almost impossible to win at...They hosted the Regional his final year there....

Just a thought.......possible will ruffle some feathers but I wanted to throw it out there.

If and/or when Glas is forced to or chooses to step down......is Ben Jacobson the guy to replace him? I believe he is still with Mac at UNI (which SI ranked the 17th best team in the nation). Is he the guy to bring the program back up to the standards that it once was?

Young, Local guy, alumnus, good experience as an assistant.

One knock is that it would be his first program.

    What do you think?

  11. Sioux win, but have to be about the most unimpressive 4-1 team in dII. I'm not seeing a whole lot of likely wins on the schedule barring a major turnaround.

The Men need Koenig and Lindahl back and in a hurry. They were very unimpressive tonight. I honestly don't know if this team would finish in the upper half of the NSIC with the lineup on the floor tonight. #10 needs to learn to dribble less and find his post more. Stop looking off the real scorers on the team and take the shots of the reversal. It seems to me that Glas is really struggling with his young team. That's something we can't forget! They are really young. However, Mary is not an impressive team either, and to barely eek out wins vs Mary, VCSU and UMC and lose to Mayville we may be in for a long year........if Tyler and Evan aren't back soon.

The Sioux shot about 47% from the field tonight and a respectable 78% from the line. That's not bad, but the lack of Defense especially when the offense was heating up was a major negative. Allow a team like Mary to shoot 47% and out rebound you is not good. Especially the 7 second chance O boards.

There is optimism though. A lineup of Harkins, Nobles, Jacobson, Lindahl and Koenig with Gutter off the bench. (or some other mix of those six) That's not a bad six for the NCC. They just need to develop depth and roles for those players. Maybe this time of struggle will be good for the young guys in the long run.

I have also been impressed with the overall disipline in T. Liekes' game. He was a gunner in high school, but has really began attempting to look for his teammates first and his shot second. Tonight I believe he was 2 for 2 I don't recall him forcing anything. He may turn out to be a decent point guard.

Oh and one more thing.....has anyone that was at the game seen uniforms that are any harder on the eyes than Mary's Blue, Orange, White and Black Trailblazer uniforms.........YUCK!

Also, where is Bledsoe been. Have I missed a reason that he's on the roster, not in the picture or on the bench for the last two games?

Well those are my ramblings after watching tonights game. Good Luck to the Sioux men, I hope they get healthy soon!

  12. I listened to part of the game, and both teams were struggling..neither team had scored in 4-5 minutes and it didn't sound like it was because of intense defense ??? When your own coach is stating that it is like pulling teeth and he saw on Monday that there was no "passion", wouldn't you try to fix that on Monday???? prior to the game on Tuesday??? Hopefully, things will improve, but from listening last night..I don't know that the Herald is that far out of line.

I was at the game and the headline fits the game to a 'T'. The team played horrible down the stretch. W/o Tyler and Lindal there isn't much to be "Thankful" for. Quick improvements are necessary.

  15. this topic is ridiculous. will an admin lock this thread down please? he is going to jinx us looking ahead that far. let's beat ferris first, then we can talk about Bubba's boys wanting to beat us IN DULUTH.

Agreed!!!! Cliche time.............ONE GAME AT A TIME... Maybe USD won't be as good then. Injuries, suspensions and overlooking teams can downgrade the importance of future "big" games.

  16. Well if that is the case GVSU has not that much more of a chance since they are barely beating GLIAC doormats and have not really played anyone yet.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Stand back.....................let's see the GLIAC boys go at it!!!!

  17. Latest Massey poll has us at #59 and not looking to good as far as our chances of winning. But we will give it a shot. You will have your hands full though with the top 3 teams in the GLIAC come playoffs.

It's still too early for those rankings matter. Once they play each other we can worry about these rankings. And formula matters little until it's near playoff time.

  18. I was just listening to WDAY radio here in Fargo and our favorite SU homer Steve Hallstrom was saying that UND wasn't any better than a top 30 team. I called and disagreed. I feel that the top of DII is as good as top 15-20 in IAA. NDSU's upset of Montana is an example. NDSU doing well last year with mostly a DII holdover team is an example. DIAA and DII are recruiting the same players. IAA isn't stealing kids from big time schools, they're competing with area schools in II or low I. I don't think the quality of players is covincingly different. I want to know what people think.

Obvious answers are depth of roster and depth of schedule? I think UND may be talented enough to win the Great West this year. I know they're coached well enough and disciplined well.

  19. What you all think of Chris Mussman? You think he has a future as a head coach anywhere? There was a offer for him to be a QB assistant to the offense coach in Edmonton, but he lost out to someone else.

I see him leaving this year to become a head coach at another d2 program.  He loves D2 Football, and I see him wanting to remain with the team long term so I see a school giving him a chance.

Anybody know how good of a coach he was before the Sioux, and if he was a top player in college?
