  1. Everybody is running from the gophs - the women's BB team is down to 3 plus the towel gal as 5 underclass gals bolted as of yesterday. I wonder whats up at the Univeristy of Minnimystery. Have to blame it on the coaching staffs.

You actually care about women's bouncyball? I don't.

  2. To call two teams who worked really hard to get to where they are is not classy and it is not like Holy Cross got lucky with their goals. They worked hard to do what they did and it is classless to demean them for that.

HC did get a lucky bounce on that OT goal. Pass deflected off of Atherton's skate right back to him for a nice open shot. But HC played well enough to desired some good bounces that's for sure.

  3. Editor's note: Bold emphasis on "modest" is my own.

Cmon, let's be serious! Modest Gopher fans? I saw a friend of mine yesterday and discussed the game. Here are a few of the better 'excuses' given as to the HC loss (and I'm being totally serious):

    1. It wasn't fair that the #1 team in the country had to go play on the road in Grand Forks. The regional should have been at Mariucci.

    2. Holy Cross was clearly better than a 15 seed and the Gophers should have played Bemidji State instead.

    3. The ice was kept super-sloppy so as to slow down the speed skaters donning the 'M' jerseys.

The best part is #1. I also heard that reason given on Saturday morning by three Gopher fans checking out of their rooms in Grand Forks. Do some people have a clue as to how far in advance these regional sites are picked? Apparently not.

It is sad that some fans are clueless. Everyone has them. They are the same ones yelling like idiots as they are walking out of the building at the opposing fans after their team won. I never understand it.

HC played better and got a few good bounces. What else is there to discuss? I don't accept the lost very well, but can't make excuses why we lost. #3 above is just too funny.

  4. There is no question that in Minnesota UM football and basketball have a much larger following than hockey. The majority of schools in Minnesota do not even have a hockey team. While I really like hockey, I feel that the "hardcore" hocky fan lives in somewhat of a box and does not see the large picture. They live and die hockey. Just look at TV ratings and the fact that the UM did not even sell all of their tickets for the Frozen Four when they played out in Albany, NY.

Well, if you ask the UM students, hockey players are much more popular on campus.

  5. It's not exactly crazy how they want this team to be a winner, but, let's face it: The Gophers are going nowhere as long as they're playing in the Metrodome.

I second that. If the Gophers get a new outdoor stadium, football will take off. I'm surprised they are even an average team in the Metrodome.

  6. Staying at Holiday Inn on Burns Avenue(5 minutes away from the X). Where is everyone going on Friday morning before the game? I like McGoverns, but have become kind of fond of Alary's for some reason????(must be the free parking and free shuttle to the game, don't know what else it could be???)

Ah yes, Alary's. ;) Our hotel is a couple blocks away, so I'm sure we will spend some quality time there Thursday and Friday.

  7. DITTO. It's getting even more rediculous.POST #1

you expect it from trolls, but to be sucked in by them makes it just as stupid.

Me too. And I thought only the uscho.com message board had topics that wasted 10 minutes of my life to read. ;)

  8. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.......maybe LC was THAT Goofie fan ?!?!?!?!

    Don't be silly.

Goofy was my favorite cartoon character but I don't remember saying he is ranked higher than Daffy Duck.;)

  9. Great. And since the NHL draft is later this afternoon...oh, wait, nevermind. I give this as much weight as I give Gopher fans telling me that "we're still ranked higher than your team" as I was leaving Mariucci Arena.

That's one of the worst comebacks ever.

  10. I first posted this on the front page about a week ago, but it's to the point now that it works pretty well and has some interesting data behind it. We stats geeks often focus a lot on potential future rankings, but while developing this I've found that visualizing the historical trends also provides some interesting context to the current rankings.

    Rankings history charts

Select a team, teams to which to compare, and your favorite ranking to see your team's historical performance in that ranking this season. Hover over a data point to see the team's ranking and numerical rating as of that date and any games since the previous data point (past week).

Why would you want to see a chart of past rankings? You probably don't -- as I warned, for serious rankings geeks only... I spend enough time in my real job visualizing data that I actually think this is fun. Updates weekly before you get up on Monday.

Wow, I can really like this. I too work in visualizing data just like this. You stat geeks will know what Minitab software is, I'm sure.

  11. The alumni party was so-so. There were more Sioux fans at the bloomington location for the season opener than there was tonight at the Roseville location. And to make it worse we had to listen to the Fox feed and the bartenders were blowing air horns when the gophers scored. Sensers is out of their freakin mind to sign up a UND alumni party, and then NOT cater to them. Let's please give our business to someone who wants it in the future. Sensers is f---ing up.

It's about time Sensers did something right!!

  12. Hello, are we talking about the same school here?

When I was in college, my close friend went to Wisconsin and I went to Illinois. The years I had a car, I went up to the UMD-Badgers series. I sat right above the student section, and really, I've never seen so many people who know so little about hockey pretending that they know things about hockey. And they were TOTAL jerks to me, even last year when I was relatively quiet because we sucked and I didn't expect to win.

Who was it on this board who said they don't like Wisconsin hockey fans because they like anything related to Wisconsin, not because they are hockey fans? Because they were right.

Couldn't agree with you more. Last year I was in Madison for UM/UW series and was taunted, got food tossed at me. Glad I'm 6'3", cause that helped when I stood up to tell him to f-ing stop. I was also talking to a guy wearing a UW jersey at the bar and asked who his favorite player was. He said #10, but didn't know his name was Robbie Earl.......geez. :silly:

I might not like the Sioux, but at least you guys know your hockey. I had great chats at the final 5 with Sioux fans last year. Too bad half of my final 5 group is Badger fans. That doesn't work well.

  13. Marto just sounds like a great athlete to me. We need ot get him on that Gopher juice though... :silly:

I also expect that any defensive liabilities WILL be corrected at UND for Forney.

Heck, his defensive liabilities have already been fixed due to his verbal to UND. Draft position moved up too. :D

  14. Even more classic, Dagies, was the fact that two Gopher fans behind me who arrived at about 9:00 pm were busy watching the tape-delay version. Shortly after the Gophers went up 1-0, they realized that the team was actually losing 3-2 on the LIVE version.

Watching the Sioux at Joe Senser's: No Charge

Mac & Cheese for the lil Sioux fan and chicken fingers for dad: $15

Seeing two Gopher fans cheer when their team scores in what they think is a 1-0 game, then realize that their team is actually losing 3-2 with about 20 seconds left and that they've been watching the tape-delay version for about 10 minutes: PRICELESS

You pay too much atttention to Gopher fans. (both of you)

  15. Too funny. Somehow, I knew that a mild dig in the direction of his belittled rodents would flush TC transplant out from the cool dirt in which he lays underneath his plywood board somewhere in the fantasy world of Goofieville.

TC transplant is way too predictable in his way. A 39-18 advantage in shots, yes. Quality chances, hardly. The Gophers, being unwilling to crash hard to the nets, were getting most of their shots off from circle or above, with easy glove saves by the Big Red goalie. They were lucky to escape with that win. Of course, I am glad that they did, because then we all had a chance to watch their complete dismantling in Columbus two weeks later.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The only time Cornell looked like they belong, was the last 10 minutes of the game. On the other hand, the Gophers looked like they didn't belong against UND in the semis. Very tough to take as a UM rube. We have some size this year with Stoa and Wheeler up front, should be different. Hopefully, that helps come crunch time in the NCAAs. (assuming we make it)

  16. Students: Please make sure you have way better signs then the lame ones that UNH had.

    "Home of the Fighting Censored."

    "You can't sue."

    uh...what.

Wow, way to really stick it to us.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Oh, those were sad by the UNH fans. Got a good laugh from the wanted poster. ;)

UND is playing good right now. Will take 3-4 points from Denver this weekend.

  17. I think we tend to look through our "green" glasses and "maroon" glasses too much. I don't think UND or UM programs magically turn players good NHL players. Hey, we both get the best young talent coming in, so getting them to the next level isn't much to brag about. Coaching does play some part, but it is very little IMO.

  18. Interesting thread. I would say that Minny's biggest rival would be UW. But, losing to UND or UMD is just terrible too. UND and UMD get really fired up to smoke Minny. I bet if you asked UMD, SCSU, or MSU they would say their biggest hockey rival is the Gophers. Michigan is a rival in the NCAA tourny, like BU was in the 70s. This is what makes college hockey so much better then the NHL any day.

  19. First thank you to Senser's for having the games. I don't want to see a dumb post like this cost them any business so here is my response.

Lets set the record straight here... I was there, there were many TVs that had the Gophers on. If for no other reason because Sioux fans were also interested. It has been my experience that Senser's has always put on whatever game they can find on request... Yes, Senser's is primarily a Sioux Bar because we support our team better and show up. This crap about them not putting on a game is wrong.

We actually went to watch the good UND/UMD game too. As a college hockey fan, watching great games like this one is something we enjoy, no matter who is playing. We did check and ask the wait staff if other TVs had the UM/DU game on at the time. The TVs might have switched over to the UM/DU game after the UND/UMD game was over. We were long gone by then. Still, very poor after my group bought dinner and drinks during the UND/UMD game.
