  1. Did I hear Berry blasting Brandt for "continue talking about us"?  Didn't seem light hearted, he seemed pissed.

Anyway, what was the difference tonight?  They came to play.  Less mistakes (still too many times when I was yelling at my TV, though).  More tenacity, more speed.

To wrap up - if you don't appreciate Brandt saying your team was lackadaisical, then don't play lackadaisical.

    Just one perspective…

    1) I’m frustrated, scratching my head at this season, and wondering where the blame should be. Like most.

    2) I’m disappointed we’re not winning more of the big recruiting battles. Like everyone. Add a Fantilli or a Cooley to this team and look out.

    3) This team loses games they should win and while they’ve looked bad at times and inconsistent, they’ve looked electric at times. Part of my frustration is I (and they) know they’re better than their record.

    4) Goaltending. If it was even average, this team would still be locked into the NCAAs and have a chance against anyone. They’d likely have confidence they can hold leads and not be holding the sticks so tight, playing to not lose instead of win. Has to be frustrating and demoralizing playing knowing your backbone is unlikely to bail you out when you need a big save.

    5) “Who’s better than Berry then, huh?” Lots of coaches based on what I prefer to see (elite recruiting, speed, exciting style). Refer to NHL, AHL, those picked for WJCs over him, and top NCAA coaches (I’d say Motzko, Carlisle, Pat…WMU’s(not going to try to spell from memory right now) etc). I’m sure Berry doesn’t think he’s the best at everything, but he does epitomize what UND coaching is about. Both good and bad. And with a proven track record of great regular seasons and disappointing exits. Are there better fits for what UND needs that they could feasibly land? I’m not sure, have to weigh the trade-offs. And I wouldn’t be at all surprised for Berry to have a great rebound season next year. He’s earned the right to prove this season and the early tourney exits are the anomaly’s in my book (and no doubt in the AD’s).

    6) There’s usually been something to elite forwards hesitating to come to UND because of their “hard skill” style vs speed/creativity. Personally, I think it sucks. I hope they can change it because the game has changed and those players are elite at the NCAA AND NHL levels these days. Our slower/systems/accountability style has merit but there’s a reason our elite players don’t win Hobey’s, many other teams let their players “cook” while UND values control and when we buzz we can look amazing but we’re otherwise playing at an average speed.

    7) Berry’s not going anywhere soon, not taking advice from any of us, cares more about this program than all of us, and has had an awful season, personally and professionally. Maybe we can give him a break? I still enjoyed last night’s win and who knows? I’m holding out a sliver of hope they can make things interesting here. Besides, a not-so-great team’s season ending might hurt less than the recent heartbreakers, right? Trying to stay optimistic about the future for my favorite team.

Hope everyone on here is doing well - times are tough and there’s more common ground then it may feel like. After all, we all love UND/SIOUX hockey right?

Very well said.  In game threads this year, I have been guilty of venting big time, but in other threads I at least try to keep a longer term, less emotional perspective.

This season has been a strange outlier for everyone involved, for sure.  Players, coaches, fans are all at a loss about how poorly they have performed versus expectations, given the number of draftees and general talent/advantages they have as a team.  I know these kind of seasons happen, but this is one of the most pronounced I've ever seen, and I'm not young to say the least!

I would expect that Berry has basically one more shot to right the ship, but honestly, another season like this one, and the numbers have to speak for themselves at some point.

Prior to the beginning of the season, I was so looking forward to this being a fun year of watching Sioux hockey. It was bolstered by the team’s pre-season ranking. Expecting a win in Vegas that didn’t happen was the beginning of a sour stomach for me. The season is in a tailspin with no end in sight. The first game I attended was in the barn in 1965. I have seen teams that were crappy, but I don’t remember a team that has regressed as much as this one. There’s talent in the team, which makes even harder to figure out why the train went off the rails so badly.

I couldn't have said it better.  Also started watching as a 4 year old in the old freezer barn.

I've never seen a season go south like this when expectations were so high, not just locally, but nationally.  Likely to finish with a losing record.  Dark days for the program.
