  1. The simplest way to save people isn't to worry about when the bye week is, but to make each week a virtual bye week.

    And how's that you say?

Roll up on opponents. Stick 21 on them in the first quarter. Have 28 point halftime lead. Then, in the second half, you can spot in a couple of 2s to get them some experience and playing time and keep some of the wear and run time off the 1s.

Dominant teams build leads and then build depth by getting 2s and 3s on the field.

Yes, playing in blowout games each week sounds good in theory, but not very realistic once you factor in opponent, injuries etc. We found that out this season. Some games, many games will be contested well into the second half. The biggest grind on players is not during the games, but during the weeks of camp and practice. Playing the actual game is the easy part. Any athlete will tell you that.

  2. There are 43 teams in the FCS who have a higher Sagarin rating than Wyoming. There are also only 7 FBS teams rated lower than Wyoming. Keep calling it a quality win all you want, but it wasn't. Wyoming is garbage and would not be a playoff team in the FCS. If you open your eyes and see it how it really is, UND had 1quality win in PSU. They were absolutely blown out by the two other playoff teams they faced, Montana and NDSU, and were beat by two other weak teams. Nothing about that screams playoff team to me.

The FCS playoffs have become too watered down when we have to debate whether a mediocre UND team was playoff worthy. They weren't, and neither was WIU and EIU.  The playoffs should maybe be 16 teams max.

UND dealt with key injuries early in the season (insert the cheap shot on Zach Arnell here thanks to the Bison) and had gotten things sorted out toward the latter part of the season with the return of Reyes, Georges and Studs. Its not how you start; its how you finish. This UND team had bounced back and was rolling in spite of blowout and tough 4th qtr losses earlier in the season. This team developed mental toughness and resolve that will continue into next year. The committee got it wrong  plain and simple.

  3. If you are talking about having bowl games for the teams that don't make the 24 team field, then I could get on board with this. And the FBS field of 4 will be expanded to 8 in the next five years. There will be too much controversy over teams getting left out that are just as good as the team being included. And there is way too much $$$$$ that can be made with an extra round of games.

I don't see the FCS getting rid of the current playoff system. But as a fan and casual supporter (I am not a donor or booster) of UND football, I am just saying it would be nice to see some type of system at the FCS level to extend the season and allow for the bowl game experience. I am sure the players, coaches and the families would enjoy it as would those that would benefit financially. Hotels, restaurants, etc. It wont' be a perfect system  because even then, some deserving teams will be left out. But, I think some of those teams that felt snubbed by the playoff committee would like a chance to play in a bowl game. It could also be another recruiting tool by adding bowl wins to a school's resume.

  4. Cripes, it took us literally decades to get rid of that horse*bleep* "bowl system" in FBS, and now you guys are trying to install it in FCS? ???

The playoff system needs a better selection process and a set of consistent criteria, but it is still way better than any of this boneheaded bowl BS.

Obviously we don't have the power to install anything. However, it would be nice to have some type of post season bowl system, without the politics and bull*^% that we saw and still see in the FBS.  I think the players would enjoy to traveling to Florida to play Jacksonville State this time of year at the NFL Jaguars stadium as would some northeast team traveling to Scottsdale to play NAU at Cardinals home stadium in Arizona to end the year.  The FBS has a "playoff system" to crown the BCS national champions but there are FBS schools that don't have a snowball's chance in hell of ever playing for the national title but there are still bowl games for them to participate in like the New Mexico Bowl, Armed Forces Bowl, and many others.

  5. I guess we need to keep in mind the old adage we all learned as kids...

"It's not whether you win or lose; it's the quality of your losses."

Based on the new precedent set by the "committee,"  Bubba should schedule Alabama, Ohio State, and Florida State every year. Get big checks  to build phase 2 and 3 of the HPC, get some new uniforms and get some quality losses in the process to give us a better shot at the playoffs.

  6. Not crazy, but I would personally rather see a setup where you could play a lower level FBS team, even if it was always a road game. Heck, even if we played a 4 or 5 win FBS team, the competition would likely be better than the Wyoming game.

This could help for development and recruiting. Won't happen, but it would be cool to see. As you mentioned, you could play out of conference teams, and with this setup you could play teams that you really never get a chance to see.

I'd rather see UND have a chance (given that they missed the playoffs) to play a team like Purdue (2-9), Kansas St (4-6), South Carolina (3-8), etc. The problem is, I'm not sure that some of those school would ever be interested in a FBS/FCS bowl game to end their season. But I do like the concept.

I like the idea of playing mid major FBS or lower tier FBS. This way, the FCS can scrap the already dysfunctional and overly subjective playoff system. Now, many schools would complain about being left out of a bowl, similar to FBS, but bowl committees could select the top 32 schools to play in a post-season bowl, provided they win the pre-requisite number of games of course. I agree it won't happen but it would be good to see.

  7. Bowl talk...It would be nice if the FCS had a bowl system. They have ice cream bowls and I lost my dog bowls for FBS schools that win six games, why not have FCS bowls? There are a ton of companies that are raking in some serious cheese that could use a tax break for being the sponsor, while giving the chance for schools like UND to play one more game against a team from another conference. Stipulations: play another conference outside of your own, best 2 of 3 coin flip to decide the home site, and the game is played the Thanksgiving weekend. Who cares what the bowl is called because its all about the competition and a chance to say I played in a bowl game. Am I crazy for thinking this?

  8. Very much related to this, I'm concerned that UND's bye week got moved to the last week of the season for this exact reason.

Yes, I agree. The bye should come with about 3 games remaining at the earliest, but not later when you factor in a playoff run.  That being said, I hope the staff takes that into consideration in fall camp and during the season to help the guys save their bodies a bit, while still getting maximum preparation and effort. Its a tough balance. A lot of guys seem really thinned out physically at the end of the season. Good for some that stand to lose a few pounds to improve mobility, but bad for those that need to maintain a few pounds for the bumps and grinds that football places on your body, especially at the skill positions.

  9. I think it also depends on what the player is doing during that downtime.  I'm guessing Studsrud put in a lot of time watching film and getting better even if he wasn't taking snaps.

Hence the mental preparation (watching film) that I was referring to.  Also, by being a QB..I think it sets a good leadership tone for the locker room.

  10. I thought about this.  I also look at the QB at Montana (Gustofson).  We will see how the playoffs shake out for that team but they have been lights out since he got back.  With him I thought maybe the same thing where he was able to see how that offense should work from a different perspective.  Having said that, hoping they don't lay an egg against SDSU.

I think Montana will beat SDSU because its all about timing and momentum...beating MSU heading into the playoffs should give them a boost. I think Clive also benefited from being out by having fresh legs later in the season. But I am not hoping for more injuries next year! But, I think you and me both see how minor injuries can turn into a positive. That's a credit to the 'mental preparation, while out, and the coaches and teammates keeping them involved.

  11. I think it's pretty clear that the committee doesn't put any thought in quality of win or wins, if they had, UND would be in over E Illinois. This goes back to he old saying " doesn't matter what you know but who you know".  Well UND didn't know the right people, E illinois did.  The chair for the committee is from the OVC and so is E Illinois.  He wanted two teams to be represented in th playoffs and he got it.  If UND was the last team left out and E Illinois was the last team in, its then apples to apples with the two teams comparisons.  Well when comparing the two teams, it's quite obvious they took quality of losses as the reason for them to be playoff bound!?  Losses????  Quality losses made you move on ????  It's how you lose that determines a teams destiny????  After listening to him ( committee chair) yesterday dance around the questions, I have no doubt that his political tongue was able to sway the committee.  And yes I'm still mad, mad as hell!!!  UND deserved this and were left out.  We've waited almost 10 years for a postseason experience and were denied because?........ Well E Illinois knows how to lose better the UND????

I am really bothered by the snub. But I will take it a step further...beyond "who you, know," its also about who knows you.  If the people with position power don't know you or take the time to get to know your program in the case of UND, its easier for them to crap on you without feeling bad about it. I'm sure (I hope) someone in the room asked the question, "What about UND....?" But it seems like, no one in the room cared enough to say, objectively, You know, UND has put together a nice resume, and they deserve a shot and actually argued the point. Having an ISU rep on the committee probably is what sunk us because he was  probably like, we (ISU) sucked all year so what do I care if UND gets in. There was a built in "hater" in the house

  12. This really sucks. He was a great recruit and obviously a smart kid. Good luck to him. He would have been a good one.

Sorry to see him go. But, I hear he has a plan for his future away from football and he's not just leaving blindly with no plan B. I wish him the best. He's a very thoughtful young man with a good personality, which will serve him well moving forward.

  13. In a strange way, maybe Studs getting injured may have helped him. It may have given him time to exhale, relax and see the game from a different perspective while watching from the sidelines in practice and in games. Sometimes, once a player sees the game from a different vantage point, things come into focus better, they relax, the game slows down and just go out and play. His play was definitely on point after he returned and that's not saying he played bad before the injury.  He just looked more confident in his decision making.

  14. Seriously? Are you crazy? SDSU wins they get a top 8 seed. They lose they go to Montana. Can you really be that dumb? And early you said we lost to avoid UND? Are you 12?  SDSU sat in an airport from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday. Arrived in Peoria close to 11 p.m. and on Saturday morning got on a bus at 8 a.m. only to sit behind an accident and not arrive in Wacomb till 1 p.m. SDSU wanted to delay the start to 4 p.m., WIU fought it and got their way; the game started at 2:45 pm. SDSU looked flat the entire game. We could not sustain any energy. It had nothing to do with UND or WIU. The winter storm absolutely slaughtered us and WIU refusing to hold off the start to a reasonable 4 pm. hurt, bad.

SDSU will beat UM, in Missoula. We don't really have a big problem curb stomping BSC schools (see SUU, MSU, UNA). Yes, we allowed UM to come back in our FIRST playoff game against UM in 2009. That was 2009, our first time in they playoffs against a very talented UM team. We are a very different program, so are they. Yes, WIU beating us was bigger than UND beating PSU. Remember, PSU also lost to that powerhouse UNC.

That said, UND should have been in prior to WIU or EIU. I don't really understand the WIU thing. They seemed to have foreknowledge that they were in. EIU got in because the chair of the committee is from Tennessee Tech, an OVC school. It is the same reason the MVFC were put into the same bracket. FCS is becoming D2. I mentioned it on AGS and I'll say it here, this is the beginning of the end of the Dakota schools being in FCS. It is the NCC and D2 all over again.

Curb stomp?  Really? Lose to a 5 win team and you think SDSU is capable of curb stomping Montana or any BSC team. UNC won 6 games this year, same as WIU.  So your argument about PSU losing to UNC is moot. FYI...UND got to bed at 2:30 am when they traveled to Weber State and lost by one.

  15. You say SDSU had everything to play for against WIU (top 8 seed and a bye) then they lose to WIU who had only won 5 games going into Saturday. Then you follow that up by saying they will in effect curb stomp a BSC team (Montana)? Sounds like you've been curb stomped one too many times with that logic. Now, SDSU may beat Montana, which I could care less if they do or not. But, you try to prop up beating SDSU as some great accomplishment by WIU, but then they are suppose to own Montana in the playoffs in Montana.

BTW...UND got to Ogden, Utah and to their hotel at around 2:00 am, and had a lead, which we blew in the 4th qtr, to Weber State.  We own that one. So don't come making travel excuses for why SDSU lost.

  16. For the last time, read the original post I responded to. You guys are ridiculous.

The original poster stated you guys have a case for being in over WIU because your win over PSU trumped WIU's win over SDSU, I disagreed and provided reasons.

I believe UND got screwed, I have made that clear from the outset. What I don't agree with is PSU is a better win than SDSU. That's it.

I will bet a paycheck that SDSU did not put forth full effort to win that game against WIU. But, I am curious how you come to the conclusion that beating a ranked team on the road, that ended up only losing two games all year (reminder:  1 of those loses came at the hands of UND) is not better than WIU beating NDSU, who was safely in the playoffs and nothing to lose in the last game of the regular season? Please explain what makes beating NDSU more valuable than beating PSU.

  17. So right now some NDSU posters over on AnygivenSaturday have a link up to this thread where their gloating over this.   Let's remember that when one of them tells you how you're not supporting the state when you're cheering for them to lose in two weeks.  Apparently these guys haven't figured out that just because their football team wins, it doesn't mean that they personally aren't classless pieces of trash.

Let them gloat. Most of the people online don't play on the team. If we handle business in the offseason as we should, and I expect we will, we'll get a shot to wipe smiles off many faces next year.

  18. Oh to think of what might have been had Studsrud not been injured against Idaho St., or Reyes been hobbled for several games, or heck if we wouldn't have lost a starting safety to a dirty hit early in the season. Gotta win games against the Idaho States and Webers but still a fine season that had us rolling at the end. Selection committee is bogus.

The hit on Brady was dirty too IMO. He was fully engaged with a defender trying to tackle him when #33 for UNC comes in for the below the knee hit. We got lucky it doesnt appear to be more serious than it was first thought.
